“Blue Elephant” cleans up
Three times within just a few weeks Schmitz Cargobull has achieved top positions in
renowned business and industry awards: “Best Brand 2012”, second place in “The Best
Factory 2012” and finalist in the “Supply Chain Management Award 2012.” “Our teams
never take their foot off the pedal,” says Chairman of the Board Ulrich Schümer, who is
delighted at the latest successes.

attached in a visible location on the vehicle.

the Transport of
Pharmaceutical Products
Few industries require higher safety standards for the
transport of raw materials or finished products than the
pharmaceutical industry. For this reason Germany’s independent consulting and service firm Pharmaserv has certified the temperature-controlled S.KO COOL semi-trailer
container produced by Schmitz Cargobull for hygienesensitive work.

customer that the trailer offers
high product quality and transport
safety. The first customer for the
trailer is the transport company
SWIFT Logistics from Langenfeld
in Germany, which also provided
assistance and support during the
two-week certification process.

Pharmaserv and the Cargobull trailer telematics system “TrailerConnect®” installed by SWIFT-Logistik
in the trailer. This made it possible
to permanently check, protocol
and review the data from the test
phase, such as the cooling temperature, as well as the technical data
for the cooling equipment.
The certification process was carried out at the Schmitz Cargobull
production factory for semi-trailer
containers in Vreden. In 14 days
the S.KO COOL trailer belonging
to SWIFT-Logistik, equipped with
TrailerConnect®, was tested under
the harshest conditions. The trailer,
cooling unit and ancillary equipment
were exposed to temperatures between -25 and +35°C in the company’s own cooling tunnel. For the
continuous monitoring and control
of the cooling data, Pharmaserv
placed a total of 24 data loggers in
various locations within the trailer.
In addition, permanent external
monitoring was carried out via the
TrailerConnect®portal. The result:

box vehicles had landed in second place just behind BMW in the

2012”. And in April the Cargobull
Altenberge plant made it to the
final round of the Supply Chain
Management Awards 2012. “The
diversity of the awards shows
that we set benchmarks in various fields,” said Ulrich Schümer,
praising the company’s employees.
The Chairman of the Board
considers ETM Publishing’s Image Award a particularly out-
standing success. “This Brand
Award is very important to us,”
says Ulrich Schümer. “Because
the assessment stems directly
from our customers – i.e. from
fleet managers, drivers and hauliers in the field.” With the award,
the “Blue Elephant” of Schmitz
Cargobull now ranks for the third
time in the same group as the serial winners, Mercedes-Benz and
MAN.
For the 16th time in succession, the readers of three ETM
trade journals voted on the best
commercial vehicles in 22 categories, with winners determined
in partnership with German safety
specialist DEKRA. Readers submit their verdict on the brands and
products which have impressed
them. The results therefore provide a practical insight into the

Altenberge plant
in the final round
With its holistic, integrated Supply
Chain Management concept, Schmitz Cargobull AG’s plant
in Altenberge reached the final round of the Supply Chain
Management Award 2012. This is presented by PwC’s PRTM
Management Consulting in cooperation with the trade magazine LOGISTIK HEUTE, the House of Logistics and Mobility
(HOLM) and the Supply Chain Management Institute (SMI).
Innovative value-added chains are essential for global commercial enterprises. This was
the seventh time that the Supply
Chain Management Award for
outstanding solutions for industrial value-added chains was presented.
The Schmitz Cargobull plant in Vreden came second
in the ranking for “The Best Factory 2012,” just behind
BMW. The performance comparison of manufacturing
facilities is held every year by the “WirtschaftsWoche” magazine, as
well as representatives of the renowned business schools WHU (Germany), Insead (France), IESE (Spain), Judge (UK) and RSM Erasmus
(Netherlands). Amongst other things, the jury praised the continuing optimisation of the cycle times. Further criteria were the business model,
strategy implementation, value-added chain, product and process development, service and customer integration, as well as general continuous improvement.

of the Blue Elephant
Medical care is an important issue. Here, road transport plays an important role. Through
its reliability and creativity, Eurotranspharma from France has become the leading transport company in this special market, which is characterised by strict requirements, in

urotranspharma was established on March 1, 2011 after
the takeover of the firm Translab
founded by Jean-Paul Baudry (from
the transport division of CSP) and
Laboratoire Marc Laine. With its
three distribution centres, 12 regional agencies and other planned
openings, as well as 130 customers from the laboratory field and 3
million deliveries per year in France,
Eurotranspharma has today become a preferred partner in this
industry sector. With its specialised distribution network for the
non-refrigerated and temperaturecontrolled transport of sensitive
products, the company serves the
needs of hospitals, pharmaceutical
wholesalers, pharmacies and other
stakeholders in healthcare – comprehensively, competently and with
competitive prices. Like all major
European countries, France has an
efficient transport system which is
committed to the European rules
of good distribution practices for
pharmaceutical products, compliance with which is expected from
the entire branch of industry.
This has also induced Eurotranspharma to agree on industrial collaboration with the German
transport company Trans-O-Flex
Thermomed. As a result, the pharmaceutical industry in both countries has a common provider at its
disposal which they can entrust
with their products for temperaturecontrolled transport at +2° to +8°C
in 6 European countries. “Temperature-controlled transport has become the standard in France for the
temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products, and the pharmaceutical manufacturers are increasingly
demanding European-wide solutions,” explains Stéphane Baudry,
President of Eurotranspharma,
whose European network today has
5 distribution centres and 48 regional agencies in Belgium, Germany,
France, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Austria. Thanks to this
new organisation it has been possible to acquire 20 new customers
within a very short time. The fleet,
which consists of 730 vehicles from
heavy-duty trucks to small vans, is
monitored by satellite during the delivery journeys, not only for position
determination, but also to monitor
the temperatures. Customers
can also access information on
the goods in real time via the Internet.

performance and cost efficiency. Hauliers can benefit from a payload increase of
up to 1,240 kg with the X-LIGHT curtainsider semi-trailer – whether the S.CS MEGA
X-LIGHT for volume transport with an interior height of up to 3,000 mm, or the S.CS

DIN EN 12642 (CODE XL). All vehicles can also be optionally ordered

main advantage of the design is the

version, the S.CS COIL X-LIGHT,
which is the youngest member of
the X-LIGHT family, fulfils high payload requirements. These include,
for example, a 45-tonne gross vehicle weight for the transport of indivisible loads. The COIL X-LIGHT can

“Breakdown Cover” meets rising demand for
fixed-price breakdown services
As with the big names in the market such as ADAC or service 24, the demand for fixedprice offers for roadside assistance is also increasing at Schmitz Cargobull. “It is almost
impossible for anyone to accurately budget for breakdown costs,” explains Graduate
Engineer Peter-Hendrik Kes, Managing Director of Cargobull Parts & Services, “which is
why it is important for us to provide the customer with a certain degree of security with
our “Breakdown Cover” and allow them to budget for the risks in their daily business”.

(CPS) GmbH has been offering
its European-wide breakdown protection package known as “Breakdown Cover” since 2010. Last year
alone, the number of contracts with
the defined performance and cost
package doubled.
In general, customers with a full
service agreement from Schmitz
Cargobull receive free of charge the
breakdown assistance for issues
caused by wear and tear, as part of
the Cargobull Euroservice.
For all customers without the repair and maintenance agreement,
CPS offers the separate Europewide “Breakdown Cover” breakdown service. The basic package
comprises arranging roadside assistance and a payment guarantee for Cargobull Euroservice, as
well as all labour and travel costs.

trucks with trailers and load-through
facility, as well as 500 semi-trailer

use. For the chassis and the bodies we only use products made by
premium suppliers. “All vehicles are
equipped with FRC box bodies and
we place special emphasis on a sophisticated vertical and horizontal
load securing system that avoids
costly breakages and has given us
a very good reputation for controls.
“We also equip all vehicles with rear
view cameras as standard, as well
as a third, high-position brake light
in order to improve safety,” says
Strehl in defining the corporate philosophy.

units. “With Cargobull we have had
a relationship based on partnership
for more than 20 years – you could

all the good sales team, which is

fulfils the requirements with their
solution-oriented activities.
In many cases the vehicles and
bodies are so-called multi-compartment vehicles with multi-tempera-
ture units and at least two evaporators. Variable partition wall systems
allow the cargo space to be divided
in accordance with requirements.
As usual in temperature-controlled
transport, Ludwig Meyer GmbH &

Francisco Guerrero lives according to his motto: progress
and modernisation. Because he always wants to offer his
customers the best service, he has completely modernised
his workshop business Talleres Guerrero in the Spanish
town of Azuqueca de Henares (Guadalajara) and can now
call himself the incumbent “Cargobull Service Partner of the
Year” in Spain.

he financial crisis began in
2008 in the USA and led to
a global economic downturn.
Despite the signs of recovery in
the years 2010 and 2011, the financial crisis has developed into
a combined bank and sovereign
debt crisis, particularly in Europe,
the effects of which still dominate
the daily news agenda. Consumer confidence in the economy is
low, so that the propensity of customers to invest and consume is
also low. This has consequences
for transport volumes – from production to the sales channels.
Transport companies in many European countries are confronted
with declining demand for transport and logistics services.
Reduced credit lines
uerrero has invested heavily
in the construction of a much
larger workshop facility. Furthermore, he has modernised all of his
machines and tools and created
optimum training facilities for the
education and training of his staff in
his new rooms. Guerrero currently
employs 20 people. The businessman states that their commitment
and responsibility are the real driving forces behind the fact that the
company is running and expanding
so successfully.
“We want to continue to grow
and the best reward for our efforts
is the satisfaction of our customers and suppliers, but also the
employees,” explains Francisco
Guerrero. “Our ultimate goal is
the provision of high-quality support and reliability to our customers. We have gained a major leap
of faith through the individual and
customer-oriented processing of
each individual order. Moreover,
we have learned to treat new customers with the same attention
and the same level of commitment
as our existing customer base.”
Guerrero’s overriding principle is
the fastest possible acceptance
and execution of orders. “Which is
made much easier for us through
our extensive stocks, the good
education of our employees and
the experience at our disposal,” he
says.
The Talleres Guerrero family
business was founded in 1983 by
its owner Francisco Guerrero, after
he had acquired 15 years of professional experience in the industry.
“The beginning was hard,”
recalls the Senior Partner. “But
thanks to our outstanding performance we have finally made a
name for ourselves. Meanwhile,
the next generation has already
begun working for the company,
which has enlarged its scope of
services through the application of
new ideas. “We went for continu-
ous development and innovation,
as well as service quality, ethics
and morality in our business dealings. Regrettably, the latter are
not so easy to find in this day and
age,” Guerrero adds.
The scope of services comprises repair, maintenance, a spare
parts service and trade-in of used
vehicles. The workshop carries out
all repairs to trailers and semi-trailers. These include axle and chassis repairs, the repair and maintenance of all components and

Service Quality in Focus
Shipping company TSA (Transports Saint Arnould) could simply have remained an autonomous brewery in the north of France. But not with André Pecqueur, a dynamic individual, who
recently received the Entrepreneur Award 2011 for the Northern Region for his work as the
Chairman of the Brasserie de Saint-Omer. Until 1999 TSA’s most important task was to deliver
the products which were made in the breweries of André Pecqueur. But it quickly became
more attractive for the boss to work increasingly as a transport and logistics service provider.
F
or example, one of the business strategies was to offer
storage capacities for the evergrowing customer base, so that
TSA created over 60,000 m² of
warehouse space. With the opening of a branch in the north of
the UK in 2001 the movement
of goods across the Channel increased to such an extent that it
now represents 70% of the company’s transport services. In 2010
the business was expanded to the
Benelux countries and the vehicle
fleet further enlarged. Today the
company operates within a radius
of 700 kilometres around its historic headquarters in Saint-Omer
(France).
The fleet has also grown from
year to year and today comprises
220 tractors and 330 curtainsiders
with theft-proof tarpaulins. Today
TSA employs approximately 350
people, including a large proportion of UK drivers. It’s a European

ven today, a beautifully restored Mercedes-Benz with
rounded bonnet adorns the vehicle fleet of the logistics service
provider in the Slovenian town of
Nazarje. The vehicle stems from
the early days of the company
when Franc Pfeifer started his
haulage business. Conveniently
located in the geographical triangle between Klagenfurt, Ljubljana
and Maribor, the location offered
good conditions for growth.
Pfeifer operates 55 of his own
vehicles, employs a staff of over
80 and has his own car wash, his
own filling station and a workshop
- and now even his own solar
power plant. Pfeifer began with international transport in the 1990s,
and since 2000 the company has
been offering its customers a wide
range of warehousing services
with its own storage space totalling 10,000 square metres. The
turnover last year amounted to
over nine million euros, and the
figure is increasing.

amskip is one of the leading pan-European logistics
service providers and uses every
imaginable version of multimodal
transport in its work. A new field
of operation for the subsidiary
Samskip Van Dieren is rail transport via the intermodal hub “duisport”. After an investment of more
than €20 million, the new terminal
in Duisburg has some 120,000
square metres at its disposal in
the final expansion phase, seven
train-length tracks and two gantry
cranes.
“Samskip has decided to invest in Duisburg and set up business there. Our commitment to
the terminal in Hohenbudberg is
an integral part of our strategy
of developing a pan-European
multimodal network of water, rail,
inland waterways and roads,” explains Jens Holger Nielsen, CEO
at Samskip Multimodal Container
Logistics. “With this we are ensuring that in the operational field
we have control and flexibility and
that in this way our pan-European
multimodal network can continue
to grow.”
Even before the commitment to
Duisburg, Samskip was one of the
largest container transport companies in Europe. The company
operates multimodal container
logistics and container services in
Europe - as far away as Iceland
and the Faroe Islands, as well as
worldwide shipments to 24 countries across the globe. One of the
specialities is global refrigerated
container transport. The network

every year. At the same time, the
trade in clothes means logistics
tasks are also required: clothes
are imported or exported and have
to be distributed and transported
within the country to distribution
centres or department stores. Modern logistics for global transport
not only bridge distances, but also

The basis of this vehicle is the
MEGA version of the S.PL flatbed
trailer. The painted steel box body
provides a clear internal height of
2,970 millimetres (with a rear passthrough height of 2,950 mm). Even
with the optional double-decker
loading equipment the clear loading width is still 2,480 millimetres.

in the international distribution of sensitive items for the
pharmaceutical industry, is using bodies made by Schmitz
Cargobull for the first time.

In 2011 his own transport company, ViciTrans, was founded.
From the very beginning it was
found that the mass transport of
frozen fish products over long distances required a sophisticated
transport system with the possibility of making precise adjustments
and automatically constant and
optimised temperature and humidity during transport. In 2012
the management of the Vičiūnai
Group decided to purchase five
S.KO COOL refrigerated semitrailers with a gross vehicle weight
of up to 40 tonnes from Schmitz
Cargobull.
The numerous advantages
and the good experience with the
new refrigerated vehicles from
Schmitz Cargobull have now led
to the Vičiūnai Group considering the purchase of an additional
30 semi-trailers with the blue elephant. Mildaras Masilenis, Head
of the Eastern Markets Transport
Department, explains why the

consumption and recyclability
increasingly important. In the development of the new S.KO COOL
the main focus was therefore to
minimise downtimes due to repairs and save fuel through better
aerodynamics and improved insulation. As a result it was possible

the handling.

The “Vičiūnai” group of companies, founded in 1991, is one of the largest producers
of surimi products. The group supplies its products under the trademark “Vici” to over
47 countries.

The refrigerated and frozen products are manufactured in their own
factories. These are located in
Plungė, Lithuania, and in Tallinn,

more than 120,000 tonnes of food
products every year. Of these,
over 80 per cent are exported.
Punctual delivery of the fresh
raw materials and finished products to the numerous customers in
Europe is known to work only with

highly professional transport system. Therefore, the Vičiūnai group
of companies founded a specialist
transport firm ViciTrans – a logistics company which has its own
vehicle fleet with more than 50
tractors. This company provides
the transport for the goods manufactured by the companies within
the group to their destinations and

vehicles,” explains the fleet manager, Mss. Vandevordt. “The body
is a 7.2 metre-long M.KO with 18
europallet spaces, Dhollandia tail
lift and ThermoKing refrigeration
unit. For reliable cargo protection
the body has integrated lashing
rails.”
The first vehicle of its type with
the blue elephant is soon to be
followed by another one, which
Schmitz Cargobull Belgium will
supply to ISI. “Originally we had
two domestic body manufacturers in the vehicle fleet, amongst
others,” the fleet manager explains. “The M.KO made by
Schmitz Cargobull is an attempt
on our part to use a body for
longer than the life of a vehicle.
I know from experience that the
M.KOs are very robust. Therefore
it should be no problem to remount the box body on the chassis of the next truck. I also appreciate the fact that the body has
a standard aluminium floor which
is easy to clean. That is exactly
what we need for our transport
purposes.”

range of services as varied as its
vehicle fleet: around 50 vehicles –
from small vans, through 7.5-tonners to the mega trailer, everything
is represented. For a special logistics service, company owner Klaus
Fischer even goes up into the air.
The resourceful pilot operates not
only his road transport company,
but also the airline Planestar Aircharter.
The company, which is conveniently located on the A96 motorway,
has a broad line-up: national and
international refrigerated logistics,
full and part loads, as well as transport and supply logistics for the automotive industry. All vehicles are
GPS-monitored. The latest acquisitions in the Eurotrans vehicle fleet
are ten S.CS curtainsider semitrailers with a new quick release
tarpaulin known as “Speed Curtain”, which company boss Klaus
Fischer ordered after an extensive
test phase at Schmitz Cargobull.
Fischer uses the new semi-trailers
for a major customer in the automotive industry. “Through the enormous time savings when opening
and closing the curtain, as well as
the way in which it makes our drivers’ work easier, I consider this to
be a customer-oriented, stable and
innovative investment in the future,” says the Eurotrans boss.
In total, Eurotrans has 30 trailers in operation for a large supplier,
with which it handles the entire factory logistics. The exact loading
times of the vehicles are calculated
by a GPS arrival system. In order to
be able to meet the tight time windows at the loading and unloading stations, accurately calculated
opening times for the tarpaulins are
required. “By using the S.CS with
its Speed Curtain we save around
two to three hours a day compared
to semi-trailers with conventional
sliding tarpaulins!” Klaus Fischer
has calculated. Before deciding in
favour of the Speed Curtain body
system he also looked at other
quick-release tarpaulin options on
the market. “In my opinion most of
them have a problem with securing the cargo, and the handling of
the tarpaulins is associated with a
greater effort for the driver – particularly at low temperatures. The
roller system, which is more complex than the standard sliding
tarpaulin, is not considered a disadvantage by Fisher: “If they are
properly cared for and maintained,
they work perfectly.” Additional
time savings are provided by the
standard Code XL certificate. “As
our loads are usually a positive fit,
we don’t need any additional safety
measures.”

ith the S.CS Speed Curtain,
Schmitz Cargobull reflects
the spirit of the age with the need
for fast loading times, because in
times of tight loading windows and
just-in-time delivery, every minute
counts. On the one hand the travel
times have to be complied with exactly although the traffic situations
cannot be planned for, while on the
other hand hauliers want to load
their cargoes as quickly as possible and get the vehicle out of the
yard. Although only central stanchions and plug-in slats have been
required up to now, with the Speed
Curtain the micro-stanchions integrated into the tarpaulin fulfil the
body strength requirements of industry regulation DIN EN 12642
Code XL, so that with form-fitting
loads no additional load-securing
measures are required.
At the events all over Germany,
well-known personalities from professional circles acted as moderators for the three subject areas. Impressive films and facts underlined
the moderated items. Not only with
respect to the “35-second speed”,
but also the securing of loads
and accident prevention, visitors
learned how they can make transport more efficient and safer in the
future. In particular, the safe driving shots with an abrupt change
of direction – where the vehicle is
only kept on the road by supporting
wheels – and the interior pictures
with extreme cargo movements,
fascinated the experts. Further cinematic impressions from the com-
pany’s own test centre with its road
simulator underlined the quality and
safety of the vehicle.
In addition to this comprehensive product information, the fastest Speed Curtain masters were
also determined at these events.
“The events and the competition
were a great success. The response
by the participating customers and
drivers was very positive,” explains
Gerd Rohrsen, Head of Corporate
Communications at Schmitz Cargobull. “The fact that the semi-trailer
can be opened and closed much
faster had already been tested by
us in advance. However, opening
times of less than 10 seconds – the
fastest time being 9.81 seconds –
exceeded our expectations.”
