For specific features of individual pieces of equipment, please refer to the individual manual located within this book. T he Audio system here in the garage is made up of several components. Many of these components have an individual manual contained in this book. This section is just a highlight for the entire system. Components The main components consist of The Garage Amplifier, The exterior Amplifier, The CD Changer, The Open Reel Tape deck, The Garage Speakers and the Outdoor Speakers. All components with the exception of the speakers are housed in the cabinet in the South East corner of the garage. The Power Supply for all of these components is located on the back of the cabinet. This Power Strip is a surge suppressor & multi outlet strip with safety caps over the outlets. The operations of the Amplifier components are covered under their own manual produced by the manufacturer. The two components are: 1) Onkyo Receiver/amp which controls the exterior sound 2) Harman Kardon Receiver/amp, which controls the interior (garage) sound. By having two separate units, this enables the ability to have two different sources playing in two different locations, i.e. cd on one & tuner on the other. 3 G A R A G E A U D I O S Y S T E M Individual Components The individual components to this system from the top down are: Teac A-2300 SD Reel to Reel tape deck This tape deck, manufactured in the mid 70’s was fully refurbished prior to purchase. It includes Dolby NR technology, 3 ¾ & 7 ½ ips play & record, VU meters, separate level controls for mic and source input as well as output levels. CD Player Area This section originally had a Sony Multi disc DC Player incorporated in this unit. After this unit failed, it was removed and the out puts are being used for either an MP3 Player, or a computer terminal. This gives us more flexibility in audio choices. Harman Kardon AVR 40 This unit has the capability of Dolby Pro Logic Sound. It is used for recording to the Teac deck as well as monitoring your recording. This unit services the Garage only, and when powered up, will also supply power to the light bar above the tape deck. For full operation and features, please refer to the individual manual located further in this book. Onkyo TX-SV525 This unit has the same features as the Harman Kardon listed above, however you cannot record to the Teac deck from here. When powered up it will be the only item powered. For full operation and features, please refer to the individual manual located further in this book. 4 G A R A G E A U D I O S Y S T E M Speakers The speaker system consists of two separate pairs, interior and exterior. For the purpose of this manual, we will start with the interior. The interior speakers are comprised of the actual speaker elements, crossover network and case. The cases and speakers were made by Marantz in the early 1980’s. As time had taken it’s toll on the actual speaker elements, the cases were salvaged and the units were rebuilt. This was a full rebuild in 1990, consisting of a Realistic subwoofer, midrange, piezo tweeter, crossover network and terminal posts. The front grille was also changed and the only thing that bears the Marantz name is the plate on the back. These speakers are rated at 100 w each, with a peak of 150. The use of this configuration allows the listener to enjoy the highs, lows and everything in between with some overlap between the individual components. The exterior speakers are rock landscape speakers made by Bahama Sounds Patio Tunes. These were purchased from eBay in 2007 and installed in July of 07. The cables consist of 14 awg and exit the SE corner of the garage and are buried to each speaker. The wattage is rated at 100W RMS. These speakers are located by the fence to the left of the pool and near the SW corner of the yard and the other is located near the SW corner of the garage. Both face toward the pool & porch area. These units are waterproof and should require little to no maintenance. On 10 July 2012, the Speakers made by Bahama Tunes failed and new ones were purchased. The new ones were purchased from OSD (Outdoor Speaker Warehouse). Model # RS790. One of the key features is the multiple source feature. The multiple source feature allows you to listen to different sources in separate locations. Simply select the amp, (or main unit) for the location you wish, then select the source and desired volume level. Tape Deck R ecording is accomplished via the garage amp only. This allows you to monitor & record while listening to the tuner outside. If you wish to monitor your recording outside as well, you can do this, however you will not be able to record with the outside unit. To record any source to the Teac deck, simply load the tape and cue it up, next select your source, cd or tuner, and the press tape 1 on the garage amp. This will enable you to monitor what you are recording. On the Teac deck, be sure you are in record mode with the individual switches and then press the record and play button to start the recording. Note: By pressing the pause button you will stop the movement of the tape, pressing the play button will resume movement. To monitor exactly as your tape will sound place the monitor switches to the tape position. You will need to do this with both the L and R channels. When these switches are placed in the source position you will hear only what the source sounds like and not an accurate representation of the tape. The individual manual, will give more you information. When recording, you will want the needles on the VU Meters to peak just into the red zone at about 0. If they peak too far below, this is known as under recording. If they are constantly in the red zone, this is known as over recording. If over recording occurs, the result is likely to be distorted sound on playback. Listen to your monitors to know where it its best set. 7 G A R A G E P A U D I O S Y S T E M lay back is similar to record. Simply load the tape press “Tape 1” on the amp you wish to use, and press play. Be sure that the source switches on the deck are in the tape position; otherwise you will hear the source sound to the deck. For more information on play back and record, consult the individual Teac manual located further along in this book. Note: Use caution when handling and using audiotape, if the temperature is below 60 degrees F, the tape will be brittle and likely to break. Also, try not to touch the inside surface on the recorded tape as this may cause unwanted sound changes in the future. When playing back, you can adjust the Output control on the Tape deck to increase or decrease the volume level going into either amp unit. In addition, if there is a great deal of hiss heard, simply turn on the Dolby NR control, you will see the LED near the switch glow, and notice a reduction in the hiss. Use caution, as this will also reduce the highs heard from the speakers. CD Changer Input T he CD Changer input is designed to handle audio signals from any MP3 or pc output. The CD changer was removed from the unit in order to facilitate more options for audio input. Harmen Karden Receiver/Amp The Harmen Karden receiver amp is used for the garage speakers only. The power/standby button is located on the left side of the unit. This control will be illuminated by an orange light if the unit is in standby mode, or a green light if the unit is on. Simply press this button to power the unit up. Select the source you wish to listen to. Your options are the tuner functions (AM/FM), CD Changer & Tape Deck. To listen to the tape deck, simply press Tape 1 and make sure the source button on the tape deck are set to tape, as noted earlier. For more information on this unit see the individual manual in Section 3. When you power up this unit, a light bar above the tape deck will also illuminate. This is the only time the light bar will be on. 8 G A R A G E A U D I O S Y S T E M Note When you initially press the tape 1 button, it will display tape one in the window. In a few second, it will return to the original source and a red display indicating M will be illuminated. In the event you power down the amp, you will need to re select tape 1 again. Onkyo Receiver/Amp The Onkyo amp functions in a similar to the Harmen Karden, only it is used for the outside section near the pool. The power switch is located on the left side of the unit, near a small amber LED. The source buttons are located on the lower half of the unit and are similar to the Harmen Karden. The only difference is, when you press Tape 1 for the tape deck, the display will read “Tape 1” and stay that way. Keep in mind, that you are not able to record from this amp. Conclusion This is just a brief tutorial and overview. All individual components have many features, which are not described, in here. Located toward the back of this manual, are research and tips for better audio enjoyment. In addition, you will also find the “pin out” table for the individual connections. This is a good point of reference, should this need to be disassembled, then reassembled at a later point. Enjoy 9 Notes: 10 - THE Page 2 - . . .... .....
