Preface of the Editor
As already noted in the preface to the first edition, the electronic text-edition of the
works of Augustine, put together at the data processing center of Würzburg’s JuliusMaximilians-University in 1983, elicited an unexpectedly large and positive response
amongst scholars. Its index, which could be opened up at any time, was able to
retrieve all the occurrences of a given word in the Augustinian oeuvre both reliably
and quickly. Scholars throughout the world – theologians and philosophers, philologists and historians, sociologists and jurists, even politicians in high public office
−began requesting specialist information. The astounding number of inquiries has
proven the great significance Augustine and his oeuvre play in the cultural history and
heritage of the West. This wide resonance has given the opportunity for the perfection
of the Augustinian electronic text and for its publication on CD-ROM.
The Corpus Augustinianum Gissense (CAG 1), published in 1996, consisted of a
rough-lemmatised text and a database of primary and secondary sources for the complete works of this Church Father, which had been derived from the key-word index
of the Augustinus-Lexikon and included with the help of the computer.
The present edition of the CAG, based on the 1st edition from 1996, has been
enhanced with new retrieval software developed at the Competence Centre for Electronic Text Publishing at Trier University. The electronic text has been improved in
every respect under the supervision of Würzburg’s Centre for Augustinian Studies
(ZAF).
Naturally, these improvements have caused expenses and could only partly be covered by the proceeds of the sales of the CAG 1. Again we had to rely on contributions and donations. Our foremost thanks, therefore, go to the German Province of
the Augustine Order which put both its abundant library, focused on Augustine’s
works, and its well-equipped offices at our disposal. Furthermore, we would like to
thank the Secretary of the German Bishops’ Conference, the Financial Directors of
the dioceses of Munich, Bamberg, and Mainz, in particular the Financial Director of
the diocese of Würzburg, Dr. Dr. h.c. Adolf Bauer, and, last but not least, the Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Augustinus Forschung e.V. (Association of patronage for
the Augustinian studies).
The editor would like to thank his research assistants, Hans-Joachim Lange, Christof Müller and Alexander Eisgrub, as well as the collaborators from the aforementioned competence center, Hans-Werner Bartz, Thomas Burch, Johannes Fournier
and Patrick Heck. It relies largely upon their efforts that the CAG 2 will be received
well again.

1. The Corpus Augustinianum Gissense (CAG)
The CAG contains the literary oeuvre – consisting in its present state of more than
5 million words – of Augustine of Hippo (354–430), probably the most important
theologian of the West, as the reception of his works throughout history testifies. The
base texts in the digitised corpus have been assembled from the best available printed
editions – critical ones where possible. Occasional misprints and mistakes in these
editions have, for the most part, been corrected.
Additionally, the CAG has been prepared linguistically in a number of ways. The
stock of texts is rough-lemmatised, i.e. every word form occurring in a text is categorized under its grammatical base form and will be found by a search request for this
form. Furthermore, all quotations given by Augustine within his own works are
designated as such, and their sources are duly recorded.
Also included in the CAG is a database of more than 27,000 entries, consisting of
secondary sources dedicated to Augustine’s life and works, and enriched with extensive bibliographical information and numerous bits of additional information, e.g. on
different writings of Augustine.
This comprehensive compilation of primary and secondary sources renders the
CAG the best research tool available for studies on Augustine.
1.1. History of the CAG
In the early eighties, during the preparation of the Augustinus-Lexikon (= AL; supported by a grant from the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), the editor-in-chief,
Cornelius Petrus Mayer OSA, began making plans for a digitisation of the complete
Augustinian oeuvre. Consequently, between 1981 and 1983, the whole range of Augustinian texts was prepared for an electronic version with the assistance of the computer centre and much work done by student- and research assistants at Gießen
University, where the editor had a chair in Systematic Theology at that time. In the
following years, further refinement and systematic preparation of the electronic Corpus remained an immense task which was again carried out at Gießen University –
hence the denotation Corpus Augustinianum Gissense.
1.1.1. Structure of data and administration
The great value and user-friendliness of the CAG depend largely upon the completeness and the accuracy of the texts included. For this reason, design, administration, updating, and correction of the corpus remain crucial and on-going tasks comprising a lasting duty for the CAG-project.
The 1983 edition of the CAG consisted of texts of varying quality, and, therefore,
texts of lesser quality have been subsequently replaced by refined critical editions as
they have appeared. Naturally, the approximately 30 letters, newly discovered by
Johannes Divjak, and the 30 Augustinian sermons, discovered by François Dolbeau,
have also been incorporated.
5
The arrangement of the Augustinian texts in the corpus follows their chronological
order, as far as a reconstruction of sequence is possible. By this, the CAG allows an
insight into the development and transformation of Augustinian concepts and themes.
The microstructure of the texts follows the book-, (chapter-) and paragraph-divisions
of the printed editions and also provides their page and line numbering to ensure easy
cross-reference between the two versions.
1.1.2. Markup of quotations
The numerous quotations, which Augustine has included into his works, were marked up, in the earlier electronic edition, according to a nine-level scheme which informed, whether the quotation had been derived from a biblical or a non-biblical
source, an earlier writing by Augustine, or a combination of these sources. In 1993
and 1994, however, all passages marked as quotations in the printed editions were
reviewed and provided with much more detailed references. Now it is easy to recognize whether a phrase denoted as a quotation has been taken from, for example, the
Epistle to the Romans or from a work by Cicero. This category of information enables
conclusions to be drawn about the development and background of Augustinian
writing, and it may also give valuable suggestions as to its interpretation.
1.1.3. Lemmatisation
Lemmatisation is a linguistic procedure which assigns an actual word form appearing
in a text to its grammatical base word form. In the case of the CAG, this base form is
the nominative singular for nouns and the 1st person singular indicative present active
for verbs. This lemmatisation is especially valuable for Latin texts with their richness
of grammatical forms. Hence, it had been recommended for the Gießen Augustine
corpus by prominent scholars, in order to permit deepened insights into Augustine’s
language, and to offer thoroughly simplified access to the complete stock of certain
morphologically rich terms. This preparation of the texts was begun in 1987. In order
to facilitate quick implementation, certain limitations, such as the exclusion of high
frequency vocabulary, were accepted. As a result, the type of lemmatisation employed
in the CAG can be called rough-lemmatisation.
This rough-lemmatisation has been carried out using specially developed EDP-routines. Approximately 75 per cent of the texts were thus marked up automatically,
leaving a quarter for manual work by qualified philologists. Manual intervention was
always necessary when homographs (word forms with the same orthography but
different meanings) or heterographs (one notion with differing orthographies) appeared in the text. Although being expensive and time-consuming, this lemmatisation
procedure makes it possible to retrieve every word form of a given notion – and only
these desired word forms – with one single search request. For scholarly work on
Augustine’s primary texts, the usefulness of this can hardly be overestimated.
6
1.1.4. Inclusion of a bibliography of secondary sources
The church father’s immense importance is confirmed by an estimated 50,000 secondary sources on the life and works of Augustine, to which hundreds of titles are
added year by year. Again, during the preparation of the Augustinus-Lexikon, the idea
of incorporating a bibliography of secondary sources, in order to make this even for
specialists almost unmanageable mass of publications accessible, came about.
That part of the project was also set in motion at Gießen University in 1983. So far,
bibliographical details of more than 27,000 secondary sources have been incorporated
into the database using seven categories to denote <author>, <title>, <genre>, <bibliography> (e.g. publication place and date, series titles), <source of information>,
<remarks> (Edition, Rezeption, Rezension) and finally <references>. The latter category serves as a catalogue for key-words and gives an outline of the contents of each
secondary source taking these key-words from the extensive headword- and subentry-list of the Augustinus-Lexikon. The user thereby has quick access to his field of
interest by searching the database for matching key-words.
This database of Augustinian secondary sources is now a tool highly in demand for
scholars specializing on Augustine. The database, originally set up by student assistants, has been completed and continuously kept up-to-date, and it is also constantly
corrected and refined by collaborators who are familiar with Augustine’s way of
thinking. Due, however, to the enormous amount of data, it cannot be presumed to be
without error. Therefore, we kindly request users of the CAG to inform the editors of
any faults which they may find.
1.2. The CAG on CD-ROM
In the mid-nineties, the editor decided to publish the CAG on CD-ROM in order to
make the contents of the CAG, which have been outlined above, accessible to a broad
public. In 1996, the first edition of the CAG on CD-ROM was published by the
renowned publishing house Schwabe & Co. AG, Basle. The product soon gained an
excellent reputation, and numerous reviews in German as well as in English, French
and Spanish journals have lavished praise on the CAG. The reviews generally agreed
that the CAG had set new standards, not only in the field of Augustinian studies, but
also, more generally, in the field of electronic publication of texts in the humanities.
Recent innovations in computing, however, made a new edition of the CAG on
CD-ROM both desirable and necessary. The second edition, with multi-lingual retrieval software and a graphical user interface newly developed by the Competence
Centre for Electronic Text Publishing at Trier University, leaves hardly anything to be
desired in this respect. Additionally, since the first CD-ROM edition was published,
much of the content of the CAG has been enhanced, updated and corrected: newly
published critical editions with philologically refined texts (e.g. De docrina christiana
and De Genesi aduersus Manicheos), and editions increasing the stock of the Augustinian repertoire (e.g. two more Sermones Dolbeau) have subsequently been included
into the CAG. Letters to Augustine have also been included and some of his works
7
have been provided with important additional information (e.g. the Enarrationes in
Psalmos). Finally, the bibliography of secondary sources has been enlarged by the
addition of some older, but, for the most part, new and current publications. All
detected errors were naturally also corrected.
The editor and his assistants from Würzburg’s Centre for Augustinian Studies are
convinced that the excellent reputation of the first edition will not only be maintained, but also enhanced, by the CAG 2 with its updates, improvements, and amplifications in contents and technology.
2. The CAG 2 on CD-ROM – Contents, design and application
2.1. Installation and technical requirements
Technical requirements: The CD-ROM runs on IBM-compatible personal computers
with the following technical specifications:
Processor
Memory
Operating systems
Disc space required
Graphics
Pentium III or higher
32 MB or higher
Win 95/98/2000/NT/XP
10 MB minimal installation; full installation approx. 600 MB,
full installation recommended
SVGA, min. 1024x768, 1152x864 recommended
Installation under Windows: After the insertion of the CD-ROM the installation
procedure will start automatically and an assistant will guide you through the set-up
process. If the installation process does not start automatically, you can also start it
with a double click on the file setup.exe in the root directory of the CD-ROM.
You can choose between a minimal installation which will install only the application (requires 10 MB on the hard disc) or the complete installation which will install
the database along with the application on your hard disc (requires approximately
600 MB on the hard disc, recommended). When you choose the minimal installation,
the CD-ROM will have to be in the disc-drive in order to work with the CAG 2,
which is not necessary when you choose the complete installation.
The installation assistant will guide you through the installation process. At the
appropriate steps of the procedure you can decide, whether you want the installation
with or without the data package, and you can determine the installation directory on
the hard disc in case you don’t want to install to the default directory. During the
installation, a font-file will be added to the Windows font directory to facilitate the
depiction of the Greek alphabet.
To remove the CAG 2 application from your computer you can use the menu item
Uninstall in the Windows start menu under CAG 2.
8
2.2. Starting and closing the application
Starting the application: After the start of the graphical user interface a splash screen
containing information about the CD-ROM appears (fig. 1). A click into the splash
screen closes it. The functions contained in the drop-down menus in the menu bar
(CAG, Edit, Text, Options, Print, Display, Query, Help) will be discussed in the
following chapters when appropriate.
Fig. 1: Welcome screen
After the program has started, an empty text window is visible on the left side, and
the navigation window – the control center of the application – on the right side
(fig. 2). The index cards on the upper edge of the navigation window give access to the
works of Augustine (Work List), to the data base search tools in Augustine’s works
(Text Database), to the tool for navigation through the search results (Search Result),
to the access tools for the bibliographic database (Bibliographic Database), to the
search tools for the various indexes, and to the bookmarks and personal remarks
(Bookmarks). These functions will also be described thoroughly in the following
chapters.
Closing the application: There are three ways to close the CAG 2: First, in the
main menu under CAG with the menu command Exit; second, with the door-button in the menu bar; third, with the right handed button in the top-bar of the
application window. The application can be minimized by using the minimise-button in the top-bar.
9
2.3. Navigation through the texts
Navigation and text selection in the list of works: After the start of the application,
the list of works mode will be active in the navigation window. In the list field, all
works of Augustine are listed alphabetically. After the abbreviations of the works in
bold letters, which correspond to the abbreviations used in the Augustinus Lexikon
(AL), the full titles are given. Behind these, the sigla and the exact references of the
editions used for the CAG 2 are given. The work list also includes Augustine’s works
which are mentioned in passages of other works but haven’t survived. These appear in
grey lettering and are labelled deperditus.
Fig. 2: List of works in navigation window
The scroll bar on the right margin of the navigation window can be used to navigate
through the Work List (see fig. 2): Top-level entries to the Epistulae and the Sermones
are displayed in a shortened form: The grey down-arrow will open up the subordinate
levels to these entries, subordinate levels can be hidden by a click on the up-arrow. A
mouse click on the buttons with the single arrow in the scroll bar moves the list one
line up or down.
Display of texts in the text window: Moving the cursor over an entry in the Work
List will change the colour of that entry in order to mark its selection. A click on this
10
entry opens the text in the text window to the left (see fig. 3 and 4). In the top bar of
the text window, information for the opened text from the list of works is now
visible: the sigla from the Augustinus-Lexikon, the full title, edition and reference. The
first page of the chosen text is depicted in the main box of the text window. A page
reference to the print edition is given in the box Page/Column on the right bottom
margin of this window.
Fig. 3: Additional information for the Enarrationes in Psalmos
Besides the bibliographical information, additional information is included for the
Enarrationes in Psalmos and the Epistulae: The Enarrationes are provided with sideinformation concerning category, localization, date, information about the sources of
the data, and additional or differing items of information. For the Epistulae information about sender, addressee and date is available.
In the text window, this additional information can be accessed by clicking the blue
info-button on the right margin of the window (fig. 3), which will only be visible
when this type of side-information is available. After a click on the info-button, the
information will be displayed in a separate pop-up window Additional Information.
The parts of the text highlighted in blue colour refer to tables. These tables can be
accessed by a click on the highlighted text. A click on the arrow-button on the upper
left margin of the window takes back to the former state of the window Additional
Information.
11
Navigation and search in the text window: The texts are given page after page in the
text window. The arrow-buttons on the right bottom margin of the text window can be
used for navigation through the depicted text; the button to the right will move the text
one page forward, the button to the left will move the text one page back, accordingly.
It its also possible to type a figure into the Page/Column-box at the right bottom
margin of the text window to jump directly to a certain page; a hit of the return-key
will open the desired page. The Search-box at the left bottom margin of the text window can be used to search for a certain character string in the page currently opened in
the text window. The letters typed into this Search-box are treated like a fuzzy search
request, i.e., a search query for stultit finds the word forms stultitiae, stultitiam, stultitia,
given that these word forms appear in the page depicted in the text window. Again, a
push of the return-button dispatches the search query and the page is searched from top
to bottom. Every push of the return-button leads to the next matching word form
which has been found; pressing both the shift- and return-keys searches the page from
bottom to top.
Options: Certain textual passages as Bible Quotes, Quotes of Other Source or Self
Quotes can be highlighted using the menu item Options (see 2.5.1.4.).
Fig. 4: Selection of texts in the navigation window
Additional text windows: It is possible to open up a number of texts in various text
windows simultaneously to enable for parallel readings, comparisons etc. A new text
window can be opened by using the book-button in the main menu bar (see fig. 1), or
with the command New Textwindow, which can be found under the menu item Text
12
in the main menu. Any text chosen from the Work List window will now be opened in
the new text window.
Position and size of text windows: Each text window can be moved on the screen
by placing the cursor on the window bar and holding the left mouse-button. To
change the window size, the cursor has to be moved to a corner of the window until a
different cursor-icon appears; by pushing and holding the left mouse-button, the size
of the window can now be altered.
Change between opened text windows: Active text windows have an openedbook-icon in the left upper corner of the window (fig. 5); correspondingly, inactive
windows have a closed-book-icon. A click on the menu bar activates an inactive text
window. Changing between text windows is also possible by using the menu item
Text in the main menu bar. All actions like opening a text from the Work List, copying
a search result or a frequency analysis etc. will be carried out in the active text
window.
Fig. 5: Active and inactive text windows
Inactive text windows which are temporarily not required can be minimized by a
click on the minus-button in the window bar. They remain visible in the left bottom
margin of the graphical user interface and can be re-activated by a click on the minimized bar in the bottom margin or by using the menu item Text in the main menu.
13
Quick view: In order to open up a certain work of Augustine quickly, it is possible
to type the abbreviation as used in the Augustinus Lexikon into the Text (ALAbbr.)-box at the bottom of the navigation window. When doing this, punctuation
and spacing may be neglected: you can type an. et. or, an et or, anetor or an.et.or –
these requests will all lead to the text De anima et eius origine libri quattuor. Again,
you have to use the return-key to open the text in a text window. Additionally in the
Location-box there can be typed in a certain location (e.g. book, chapter, paragraph)
according to the rules of the AL to jump straight to a certain passage.
For the Epistulae and the Sermones it is required to give the number of the Epistula
or the Sermo in the box Text (AL-Abbr.). This number has also to be typed in into the
Location-box and here a paragraph number can be added (see fig. 6).
Fig. 6: Quick view of ep. 3,2
2.4. Search queries
In the Text Database, search queries can be carried out as full-text search, or as
categorized search (2.4.1.–2.4.3.). Searching is also possible in the Indexes (2.4.5.);
finally Augustinian primary and secondary sources can be searched for in the Bibliographic Database (2.4.4.).
2.4.1. Searching the text database
Design of window: The window Text Database consists of two parts (fig. 7): In the
upper half, search queries can be drawn up, in the lower half there is a tool to restrict
queries to certain texts. The selection of texts can be carried out in an alphabetical list
(Alphabetical Text Selection) or by category (Categorized Text Selection). At the lower
edge of the window there are three buttons: The first one is used to start search
queries (this is also possible by pressing the return-key), the second and third button
are used to select or de-select all texts. The button Search Help will open up a window
which gives instructions for using the retrieval tools (see also 2.4.2. and 2.4.3.).
Alphabetical and categorized text selection: Texts for a search query can be preselected in the list windows Alphabetical Text Selection and Categorized Text Selection. Red hooks in front of the listed texts indicate that these texts will be incorporated into a search query. Hooks can be added and removed by a mouse click on the
checkboxes. Texts without hooks will be excluded from the query. By using the
buttons in the bottom of the window, Select All and Deselect All, all texts of a list can
be selected or de-selected. The button Deselect All is appropriate, e.g., when only a
few texts shall be incorporated into a query. The list under Categorized Text Selection
(see fig. 8) enables for a thematic selection of texts. Here, all texts belonging to a
certain category like the sermons, the moral-theological writings, or the lectures etc.
can be selected for a query. A click on one of the plus-signs will open up the lists with
14
Fig. 7: Fulltext search in text database
the categorized single texts. These can also be selected and de-selected here. When
only a number of texts of a category, e.g. in the dogmatic writings, have been chosen,
a grey hook in the box before the main entry Dogmatic Writings will indicate this.
When a main entry like Dogmatic Writings is chosen, a red hook in front of this main
entry and in front of every text listed under this category will indicate this.
Synchronization of display: One or more texts selected in the Alphabetical Text
Selection-box will also be marked accordingly in the Categorized Text Selection- box.
The marking of the selected texts will always be synchronized while you change
between these two boxes.
Search queries in categories: It is possible to carry out a full-text search in one, or a
number of chosen texts, or in the whole corpus. It is also possible to restrict the
search query to certain passages of a text, e.g. biblical quotations (category 1), or
self-quotations by Augustine (category 4). It is also possible to search those parts of
text, which do not belong to any of the sub-categories 1–9 under Normal Text.
AND as default value for complex search queries: To carry out a search query,
character strings can be typed into one or more of the search-boxes in the Text
Database window. When more than one box is used for a query, these are combined
by AND, by default: A query for sapientia in biblical quotations and for caelum in
self-quotations by Augustine yields every text passage which contains sapientia within
15
Fig. 8: Categorized text selection
a biblical quotation and caelum in a self-quotation by Augustine. More options for
complex queries see 2.4.2. and 2.4.3.
Fig. 9: Search results
Search results: A search query for sacramentum in the category Fulltext in all the texts
of the corpus will yield a result as shown in fig. 9: The elements found will be listed
chronologically (see 1.1.1.) and they will be ordered according to the sigla of the texts
and the references. The index card Search Result in the top of the window is active
now. The character strings found in the text passages are highlighted (fig. 9). A maximum of ten items is given in this window; search results that contain more than ten
16
items can be viewed – pagewise – by using the arrow-buttons in the title bar. By a
click on an item of the hit list, the corresponding page of the text can be opened in the
text window. Hereby, the larger context of a passage can be viewed. The search string
will also be highlighted in the text window. When there is more than one search string
on one page, the first one found will be highlighted.
Display of search results: The presentation of the items in the Search Result can be
altered by using the menu item Display in the main menu. By default, the items are
displayed in a KWIC-index format (KWIC = Key Word In Context) giving one line
of text. This can be altered in order to have one line after the text line with the search
string (KWIC 2 Lines), one line before and one after (KWIC 3 Lines), or one line
before and two lines after the one with the search string (KWIC 4 Lines).
Fig. 10: Export of search results for printout
Printout of search results: In order to permit efficient usage of long hit lists, these can
be printed out. Therefore, the hit list has to be copied into a text window by a click on
the copy-icon on the upper right corner of the Search Result list (see fig. 10). Text
portions visible in a text window can be printed out by using the menu item Print –
Current Document (see 2.5.1.5.) or saved as a text file (see 2.5.1.3.).
Save search results: Efficient work with the CAG-CD is also supported by the
possibility to save search results in both the Text Database and the Bibliographic
Database; this allows for reviews and repetition of search queries. A detailed description of this feature is given in 2.5.1.7.
2.4.2. Search queries with wildcards and lemmatized search
Wildcard searches and lemmatized searches can be employed to generalize or specify
search queries in order to have a higher or lesser number of hits in the hit list.
Search queries with wildcards: The standard wildcard asterisc (*) can be used to
modify character strings for a search query in the CAG-databases. A query for cael*
in the box Normal Text will open another window where the query has to be specified. In this window (Limit Search, see fig. 11), all word forms with the character
string cael (e.g.: caelebs, caeles, caelestes, caelestia, caeli, caelo etc.) will be listed in
alphabetical order.
Restrict searches: The red hooks in the boxes to the left side of the word forms in the
window Limit Search indicate, that these will be incorporated into the query. The
number of word forms which were found is given in brackets after the word forms.
With the buttons at the bottom of the window (Start Query, Select All, Deselect All,
Cancel) the search operation can be started or cancelled, and the word forms can be
17
Fig. 11: Window Limit Search
selected or de-selected. Single word forms can be selected or de-selected by clicking the
checkboxes with the red hooks. After the search has been started from this window, the
results will be listed in the Search Result, and can be viewed and used as described in
2.4.1. The search for homographs (see 1.1.3.) is similar: For the search string legis in
Fig. 12: Combined lemmatized search query with wildcard
the interim results, the lemmatised forms legis (=> Lemma lego/3) and legis (=> Lemma lex/legis) will be given in order to distinguish between verb and noun.
18
Lemmatized search: A lemmatized search query can be carried out by using the
index of lemmata (see 2.4.5.) or by typing the grammatical base word form (see 1.1.3.)
combined with the lemma-operator (l: or L:) into one of the boxes in the Text Database search window. Lemmatized search for l:imperfectio or L: imperfectio will find
all passages containing an inflected word form of this base form. A mouse-click on
any item of the hitlist will open the text page with the passage in an active text
window.
It is also possible to combine lemmatized search with wildcard search (fig. 12). The
character string l:remi* in the field Fulltext will find all related word forms, as the
window Limited Search shows: all word forms belonging to the base forms remigro,
reminiscor, remissa, remissibilis, remissio, remissor or remitto have been found.
2.4.3. Boolean search and wildcards
The asterisk is only one of the wildcards that can be used for searching the text
database and the bibliographical database (see 2.4.4.).
Wildcards and fuzzy search: The wildcard ? (question mark) resembles exactly one
character; the search string qu?dam will lead to the word forms quadam, quidam and
quodam in the intermediate results. By using cornered brackets, more than one character can be defined for a certain position in the search string. A query for the search
string expert[eo] will list all appearances of the word forms experte as well as experto.
Boolean search: Search strings can also contain the Boolean operators AND, OR
and NOT. These have to be typed (in capitals) in between two search strings: caelum
OR terra, caelum AND terra, caelum NOT terra. In the first example (OR), all
passages containing at least one of the two search strings, i.e. caelum or terra are
found; the second example (AND) will find all text passages containing both the
search strings, i.e. caelum and terra. The third example, caelum NOT terra, will lead
to all the text passages which contain the word caelum, but not the word terra. When
both search strings are typed into one search-box without using an operator, the
default value is AND, i.e. caelum terra will be processed like caelum AND terra.
Phrase search and proximity search: In addition to the possibilities for searching
shown above, it is also possible to search phrases containing more than one word, or
words which stand close to each other in a pattern. By typing a phrase consisting of
more than one word with quotation marks − e.g. “ex quo fecit” − all the text passages
will be found which contain exactly this phrase. Angled brackets can be applied for
proximity search. In combination with digits, these angled brackets determine the
distance (in words) between two search strings: The query initium <2 < fine will find
all the text passages in which both search strings, initium and fine, are divided by no
more than two words, like in the phrase initium sine fine.
Instead of angled brackets (< <) the equals sign (=) can also be used for proximity
search. In this case, only the phrases will be found which contain the search
strings/words in the given order. This makes it possible e.g. to find biblical quotations
19
Fig. 13: Lemmatized search with AND-conjunction
without using the index. The search for Rm =1= 8,24 will find all the tags which have
been inserted into the text in the form [Rm 8,24]. This type of proximity search also
makes it possible to find certain word forms in biblical quotations: A search string
l:spes =15= Ps will cover all the passages which contain the word spes not more than
15 words before the tag form [Ps. ... consequently it is very probable that the found
word form belongs to a quotation of a psalm.
Combined search queries: Search queries with wildcards and Boolean operators can
be combined with lemmatized searches (fig. 13) and the search for certain wordforms.
A lemmatized search for L:initium AND L:schisma will find all the text passages
containing word forms (also inflected forms) of both initium and schisma. A search
for L:caelum AND caeli will find all the pages which contain any inflected word form
of caelum and the word form caeli. − Please note: When more than one search-box is
used for a query, the different boxes used in this query will be connected by the
Boolean operator AND when searching the text database (cf. 2.4.1.). Separate searchboxes used will also be connected by the operator AND (cf. 2.4.4.) when searching
the bibliographic database.
20
2.4.4 The bibliographic database
This database which contains a total of more than 27,000 bibliographical items concerning the life and works of Augustine can be opened (see also 1.1.4.) by clicking the
index card Bibliographic Database in the navigation window.
Search-boxes: The window is divided into three sections. In the upper section there
are search-boxes for the categories Author, Title, Annotations, Bibliography, and References (fig. 14).
Fig. 14: Search query in the bibliographical database
Author: Here, first and last names of authors can be searched. For searching, the order
of first and last names is not of importance; it is also not necessary to pay attention to
diacritics (accents etc.) and for capitalization. Searches for Jean Chéné, Chene Jean or
chene jean will all lead to the same result. By using the context menu of the searchbox Author, an author name can also be chosen from a list. The menu item Paste from
Wordlist from this context menu will open the window Wordlist. You have to type at
least one letter into the search-box on top of the window. Below this, all names
beginning with this letter or these letters will be listed alphabetically. You can transfer
any name from this list to the search-box by a double click.
Title: Full titles or title keywords can be given here. Order, capitalization and
diacritics are treated as in the Author search-box. Title keywords can also be chosen
from a list analogous to the author names.
21
Annotations: Here the classifications Edition, Review or Rezeption can be chosen to
restrict searches to one of these categories.
Bibliography: Here, bibliographic information such as titles of journals, anthologies,
yearbooks or titles of series, places and years of publication can be given to restrict
search queries.
References: Refers to the category of Latin headwords. A list of headwords is available in the appendix to the manual (App. IV). Please note the convention to type u for v
in headwords, e.g. prouidentia, not providentia – when typing manually. Headwords
can also be chosen from a list like in the Author search-box.
Queries: You have to type a search string into one of the search-boxes and activate
the search procedure by pressing the return-key or clicking the Start Query-button in
order to start a search query in the bibliographical database. The result list will be
displayed in short form in the middle section of the window under Result. A mouse
click on an item in the result list will open the complete bibliographical entry in the
display section in the lower part of the window (Literature).
Boolean search and wildcards: As has been described (see 2.4.3.), Boolean operators
and wildcards can also be employed for searching the bibliographical database. A
query Kunz* in the search-box Author will show all the entries by the authors Kunz,
Claudia; Kunze, Michael and Kunzelmann, Adalbero. The search query M[ea][iy]er in
the Author search-box will find all the entries by authors with the surnames Maier,
Mayer, Meier and Meyer. More than one search string in one search-box will be
connected with an AND-conjunction, by default.
The elements of the query in the different search-boxes will also be connected with
the Boolean operator AND when search strings in different search-boxes are combined for a complex query. A query in the search-box Author: O’Donnell (Please
type: Odonnell or odonnell) combined with a search string Confessiones in the searchbox Title will only find entries which have the author O’Donnell and the element
Confessiones in the title.
Printout of search results: Results of search queries in the bibliographical database
can also be transferred to an active text window. The procedure is similiar to the
printout of search results in the text database (see 2.4.1. under Printout of search results). By a click on the copy-icon to the left or to the right, the short entry form or the
long entry form of the bibliographical item can be selected for export to the text
window.
2.4.5. Search queries in the indexes
There are three indexes available for index search: A Lemmata Index, an Index of
Greek Words, and an Index of Quotations. The Index of Quotations contains the Bible
Quotations from the OT and the NT, Other Sources (non-biblical antique writers)
and the Self Quotations.
Index of lemmata: The lemmata are listed alphabetically. Each letter of the alphabet
can be opened by clicking the index cards on the left margin (fig. 15). The scrollbar on
22
Fig. 15: Search in lemmata index
the right margin can be used for navigation through the alphabetical portions. By
right-clicking a certain lemma, the search category can be chosen from the contextmenu (which appears after the right-click). A right click on e.g. ciuitas opens the
context menu, and from this, the category Query as: Bible Quote (category 1), for
example, can be selected. A left-click on this category will open the Text Database
window, and the search string ciuitas will automatically be pasted into the search-box
belonging to the appropriate category. The search query will be started by the Start
Query button.
The Copy-function in the context menu can also be applied to paste a lemma into a
search-box in the Text Database window. After opening the Text Database window,
another right-click on a search-box will open a context menu containing the items
Cut, Copy, Paste and Show Word-Frequency. Paste can be used to place the lemma
(which has been copied from the lemmata list) into the selected search-box in the Text
Database window.
A click on a lemma will transfer this lemma automatically to the search-box Fulltext
of the text database.
Frequency analysis: The last item in the context menu described above, Show WordFrequency, will open another window (fig. 16) which displays the statistics for the
word frequency of the chosen word.
At the beginning of the list, statistical data concerning the whole corpus is given; the
figures for the single works are given below in the chronological order of works (see
1.1.1.). In the columns, the number of words of each work, the absolute frequency of
the requested lemma, the relative frequency in comparison to the whole corpus, the
23
Fig. 16: Display of word frequency
expected frequency concerning the size of the work, and a value giving the relation
between expected and actual frequency of a lemma within a work are listed. A frequency analysis of the lemma gratia shows, that the topic “grace” has not much
importance in the early philosophical writings, but it has much more impact in the
anti-pelagian writings gest. Pel. or gr. et pecc. or.
By a double click on any result, the requested lemma can be transferred to the
search-box Fulltext. The choice of works will be restricted to the concerned work,
automatically. The search query can be started as described before. The contents of
the frequency analysis window can be transferred to an active text window by using
the copy-icon in the left lower corner. This enables for printout and review of the
word frequency lists.
Index of Greek words: The functions of the Greek index are similar to those of the
lemmata index (see above). When pasted into search-boxes in the text database window, words chosen from the Greek index will be displayed in a transcription using
Latin letters, although.
Index of biblical quotations OT/NT: A double click on the index card Bible Quotations/OT or Bible Quotations/NT will open a list of all the books of the Bible from
the OT or the NT; another mouse click on a plus-sign in front of an item will open a
tree listing all the quotations Augustine took from this book (fig. 17). The frequency
of how often Augustine has used this quote in his writings is given in round brackets.
By a double click on a biblical quote, all matching quotations will be displayed in
the bottom section of the window. In the bottom section, a click on a quote opens the
corresponding page of the text in an active text window and the context of the quotation can be viewed.
24
Fig. 17: Search in index of biblical quotations from the NT
Index of other quotations: By a double click on the index card Other Sources, a list of
all authors quoted by Augustine can be opened. Accordingly, to any author of the list,
all quotations found in Augustine’s works can be listed. The frequency of how often
Augustine has used this quotation in his writings is again given in round brackets. The
display and the transfer to text windows are analogous to the biblical quotations (see
above).
The category Others at the end of the list sums up all the quotations which cannot
be related to single authors and quotations of authors not incorporated into the list.
Index of self quotations: The index of self quotations contains all quotations by
Augustine himself which he has used. The functions of this index are analogous to the
index of biblical quotations and of other quotations.
2.5. More functions
2.5.1. Pull-down menus
Pull-down menus can be opened by a mouse click. Menu items can be activated by
highlighting and clicking them or by using the return-key. The pull-down menus can
25
also be opened by using the Alt-key in combination with the highlighted letter in the
menus. Navigation through the menus is also possible by using the cursor-keys.
2.5.1.1. CAG
The menu item About CAG ... opens a splash screen giving the title and the contributors and editors of the CAG 2. List of Works as PDF-File opens a pdf-file containing a list of all works by Augustine in alphabetical order with abbreviation, title,
edition and explanatory notes. The Acrobat-Reader has to be installed to view this
list. Exit quits the application.
2.5.1.2. Edit
Cut cuts marked passages from text windows containing texts of own composition;
Copy copies marked text passages, Paste pastes copied or cut text passages to the
actual cursor position in a text window.
2.5.1.3. Text
New Textwindow opens an additional new text window. With the item Save as you
can save the contents of the active text window as a text file (*.txt). You can choose
the directory and you have to give a file name. Open opens a saved text file in an
active text window. 1 text/ 2 text etc. gives a list of all opened texts and enables for
quick switching between opened texts.
2.5.1.4. Options
By Mark (Quotes) you can highlight quotations of nine different categories (see text
database 2.4.1.) in the Augustinian works. All categories chosen for highlighting will
be marked by an asterisk. A mouse click on any category activates or de-activates it.
Mark All activates the highlighting of all categories of quotations. Mark None deactivates the highlighting of every category of quotation – the whole text is in black
letters. The colours used for this highlighting are the same as in the text database (see
2.4.1.). Select Language: The last item under the pull-down menu Options can be used
to change the language version of the application. A German, an English, a French
and a Spanish version are available. Note: The application has to be restarted to
activate the chosen language.
2.5.1.5. Print
The menu item Print contains the commands: Select Printer, Setup Page, and Current
Document. With Select Printer, a printer installed on the system can be chosen, with
Setup Page, the settings for the paper format can be modified; the command Current
26
Document will send the document visible in the active text window to the printer
immediately.
In printouts quotations are marked by double quotation marks, search strings are
bracketed by asteriscs (e.g. *sacramentum*).
2.5.1.6. Display
KWIC 1–4 Lines can alter the size of context given along with the search result items:
The presentation of the items in the search results can be altered by using the menu
item Display in the main menu. By default, the items are displayed in a KWIC-index
format giving one line of text. This can be altered in order to have one line after the
text line containing the search string (KWIC 2 Lines), one line before and one after
(KWIC 3 Lines), or one line before and two lines after the one containing the search
string (KWIC 4 Lines). To alter the size of the search result items, the search query
has to be carried out anew.
2.5.1.7. Query
Search queries carried out in the text database and the bibliographical database can be
saved, edited, modified and carried out again. A mouse-click on the menu item Query
will open a menu containing the following commands: Save Current Text Query,
Save Current Bibliographic Query, Stored Queries ..., Last Queries.
Save Current Text/Bibliographic Query: A current query can be saved by using the
command Save Current ... Query under the Query-menu item. In a pop-up window
(fig. 18) a name for the query can be given, the query will be stored by clicking the
OK-button.
Fig. 18: Storage of a search query
Queries can also be added to the storage list by using the buttons Add Current Text
Query and Add Current Bibliographic Query in the window Stored Queries (fig. 19).
27
These buttons open the pop-up window (fig. 18), where a name can be assigned to the
stored query.
Fig. 19: Editing stored queries
Stored Queries: The menu item Stored Queries opens a window containing a list of all
stored queries in the left half. In the column Type, the type of the stored query is
indicated: Text designates queries in the text-database, Bib designates queries in the
bibliographical database.
To open a stored query, the name of the desired query has to be highlighted by a
mouse click, first. The button Load Selected Query will open the query in the text
database window or the bibliographic database window, depending on the type of it.
Then, the query can be modified, carried out again etc. Saved queries can be deleted
by highlighting them in the list-box of the window Stored Queries and by clicking the
button Delete Selected Query.
Last Queries shows the last five queries that have been carried out. A mouse click
will load the selected query into the text-/bibliographic database automatically.
2.5.1.8. Help
User Manual (PDF-File) will open the user’s manual of the CAG 2. The manual will
be opened in the Acrobat reader.
2.5.2. Menu-buttons
When pointing on the buttons in the main menu of the CAG 2 with the cursor, a
small popup window will explain the function of the buttons.

and find it again at any time (fig. 20). When the cursor is placed inside an active text
window, a right-click will open the context-menu-button Create Bookmark. A leftclick on this button will set a bookmark exactly in the line where the cursor has been
positioned at that moment. A book-icon will appear near the text passage to indicate
the bookmark.
Fig. 20: Create bookmark
All bookmarks will be available until they are deleted by the user. This is possible in
the bookmark list under the index card Bookmarks in the navigation window
(fig. 21). The AL-abbreviation of the work and the page and line references are given
Fig. 21: List of bookmarks
for the items in the bookmark list. The text passage can be opened in an active text
window by a double-click on the item in the bookmark list. It is also possible to go
to a highlighted bookmark with the Go To-button at the bottom of the window
(fig. 21). A right click on an item in the bookmark list opens a context menu containing the commands: Go to Bookmark, Delete Bookmark and Edit Bookmark.
29
By using the command Edit Bookmark, personal notes can be added to a chosen
bookmark. These can be typed into the window Bookmark, which will pop up after
using the command Edit Bookmark (fig. 22). After a click into the white space inside
this window, personal notes to the chosen bookmark can be typed. The button Save
Changes at the bottom of the window has to be clicked in order to save these
changes. Editing of a bookmark can be finished by clicking the Close-button.

[1] Based on K.H. Chelius’ ‹List of Augustine’s Works›: AL 1 (1986–1994)
XXVI-XLII, to which readers are referred for the abbreviations and full titles.
The selected editions form the basis of the AL, the CAG 2 (CD-ROM) (cf. ib.,
Manual, App. V) and the CAG (augm.) in its present form (2002), as they are
currently regarded as the definitive critical editions. (Cf. also E. Dekkers/Ae.
Gaar, Clauis patrum latinorum, Steenbrugis 31995, 97–134 (–153); H.J. Frede,
Kirchenschriftsteller. Verzeichnis und Sigel, Freiburg 41995, 198–259
(–304).1049; id. (†), Kirchenschriftsteller ... Aktualisierungsheft 1999/Compléments 1999 par R. Gryson, Freiburg 1999, 45–49 (–52) and (D. Krömer/C.G.
van Leijenhorst), Thesaurus linguae latinae. Index librorum, scriptorum, inscriptionum, ex quibus exempla afferuntur, Lipsiae 21990, 20–28 (–32).) Certain
texts not by Augustine but by his adversaries are included with Augustine’s
writings where they are important, along with their form of citation (e.g.
reference to an adversary: Fausti uerba = Faust. A. c. Faust.). In most cases the
notes contain ‹Corrigenda› and ‹Errata› referring to the editions mentioned
which have already been taken into account and corrected in the CAG (and
also printer’s errors over and above these), other editions and critical articles
which can be compared with them, or also details of sources of non-Augustinian texts or other references. The symbols [a] – [d] refer to the citation of
the works in question used in the AL (cf. ib. 2,IX). To avoid constant repetition, the texts entirely in brackets, which are ones recently discovered in
more extended manuscript form, do not appear in the CAG. This applies to
several s(ermones), as well as to ep. 250A = ep. 1*,5 (cf. [194]). The abbreviations are those of the AL (2, XXXVII-LII), plus the following:

Mayence, édités et commentés par F. Dolbeau, Paris 1996) (without s.
Dolbeau 28–30, which do not come from Mainz) (cf. id., Augustin
d’Hippone, Vingt-six sermons ... Supplément bibliographique 1996–2000,
Paris 2001). Cf. also id., «Seminator uerborum». Réflexions d’un éditeur
de sermons d ’Augustin: AugPréd 95–111. S. 44, 333, 340, 364, 365, 366,
368, 371, 372, 382, 383, 384, 385, 387, 388, 391, 394 and the first paragraph of s. 370 have been excluded as inauthentic (according to Verbraken), as has s. Caillau 2,60 (= s. 236A) where the extent to which it is
Augustinian is uncertain and the text extremely corrupt (Frede
235.281.287; ThesAug A(1),XIX.XXIX). To avoid constant repetition,
the texts entirely in brackets, which are ones recently discovered in
more extended manuscript form, do not appear in the CAG. This has
happened particularly as a result of s(ermones) Dolbeau, apart from others (e.g., fragments are of course affected: thus s. Dolbeau 9,2 (= s. 28A)
includes s. Fransen 1 (= s. frg. Verbr. 4) (= s. 28A); s. Dolbeau
26,30–35.60.15.44 – 45.53.21.49–50.53.49 (= s. 198 augm.) contains s. frg.
Verbr. 15–20.21–23 (= s. 197,1–6; 198A,1–3)).
