An international bibliography of computerassisted language learning: sixth instalment

This is the sixth attempt since 1988 to serve the ed tech community by making
public a collection of 682 bibliographic entries. Together with its predecessors** this
international and multilingual bibliography now boasts a total of 5301 items.
Without exaggeration, it can be said that this constitutes a fairly comprehensive
overview of developments during the last 25 years. Most of the entries in this instalment stem from post-2001 journal articles and books, but I managed to do a bit
of retrospective documentation in March 2004 on the occasion of a visit to the CILT
(Centre for Information on Language Teaching and Research) library in London.
CILT is the European foreign-language teacher’s mecca, strongly to be recommended. Thanks are due to the staff of CILT who have helped to make this
compilation as complete as possible.
Due to my retirement from Bayreuth University in 2002 and subsequent move
from Upper Franconia to the Rhineland, the 61 journals which form the backbone

of this international CALL bibliography had to be inspected at different locations.
Apart from CILT in London, the university libraries at Bayreuth and Bonn must be
mentioned as well as the seminar and institution libraries in Bonn. To complement
the mopping-up operation at CILT, I sent e-mails to colleagues who I knew to be in
the CALL business and asked them to contribute offprints and/or pre-publication
papers. A number of them went out of their way to help, and I should like to record
here my gratitude to them, too.***
As in previous instalments, the most important bits of information are not contained in the alphabetically sorted first part. It is the index and its 717 different
descriptor terms which are the user’s open sesame to the profession’s collective
wisdom. You combine a number of descriptor terms and home in onto the subject
areas you are interested in. Admittedly, this procedure is a bit cumbersome, if done
manually, but it is hoped that the 5000+ entries of this bibliography will soon be
made available to the public as a searchable database. Users are advised that (application) software and programme titles as well as the names of organizations and
institutes are printed in capital letters to ease information intake.
I shall take the blame for any mistakes that may have remained despite the fact
that my wife Heidrun and I meticulously frisked the manuscript on more than one
occasion. The fame goes to Heidrun, who encouraged and supported me over the
years at all stages of the compilation of this international computer-assisted language
learning bibliography. She typed my handwritten notes and processed the manuscript until it came out as neat as one could possibly hope for, and she finally
transformed the manuscript into a database. Thank you, Muse.
