Pigments, pigment preparations and dyes from Clariant
Clariant supplies pigments and dyes. These ranges, supplemented
by pigment preparations, special formulations and special grades,
contain a wide variety of products for the paint and surface coatings
industry as well as for other special fields.
On the following pages we give a general overview of our colorants,
indicating their possible uses in the main fields of application. Only
the standard ranges of the pigments and dyes have been included
here.
It is not appropriate to treat the other special grades, preparations
and special dyes in the same way because they appear in the brochure as separate ranges with details of their special fields of application.
The symbols mean:
■ = highly recommended
● = recommended
❍ = limited suitability
We would however point out that these recommendations are
simply a general guide that is intended to make it easier to select
suitable products from our range of colorants.
Frequently required physical data of the pigments and additional
technical details about the aqueous pigment preparations, such as
pigment and solids content as well as type and amount of solvent,
are given in the brochure so as to reduce the need for inquiries.
Notes on diarylide pigments
It has been known for some considerable time that thermal
clearages may occur diarylide pigments when they are processed
in polymers at temperatures above 200 °C.
The following pigments supplied by Clariant are diarylide pigments:
Pigment Yellow 12
Pigment Yellow 13
Pigment Yellow 14
Pigment Yellow 16
Pigment Yellow 17
Pigment Yellow 81
Pigment Yellow 83
Pigment Orange 13
Pigment Orange 34
All commercial products recommended for the paint industry that
are based on the above diarylide pigments can be found in this
brochure.
These products can form traces of aromatic amines at processing
temperatures above 200 °C in the presence of polymers (see safety
data sheets; further information is also given in ETAD INFORMATION
NOTICE No. 2 »Thermal Decomposition of Diarylide Pigments« –
September 1990).
Details of coloristic and fastness properties can be taken from the
literature quoted and the following pattern cards:

The Hansa Yellow pigments are noted for very good light fastness.
Use of the Hansa Red grades should be restricted to full-shade
colorations. The Hansa pigments do not have adequate fastness to
overpainting. They are standard pigments for air-drying paints.

Numerical code and special grades
2.1
Numerical code for alteration of standards and special grades
In the course of improving or further developing existing pigments/
pigment preparations for special fields of application or special
processing methods there is a need for modified grades or special
grades, which are identified by adding a two-digit number to the
pigment name. Each further modification to one and the same pigment is identified by the next consecutive number.
2.2
We use the following system:
01 - 19
Alteration of standards and improvements to individual
pigments (e.g. higher tinctorial strength, change in
shade etc.).
30 - 39
Alteration of standards or improvements to pigment
preparations with their own range name.
40 - 49
Easily dispersible pigments primarily for air-drying
paints.
70 - 79
Highly opaque pigments with very good flow properties.
TS range
Pigments with closer tolerances, especially for use in tinting
systems.

The Sandosperse A pastes are solvent-containing pigment preparations based on a carrier resin (aldehyde resin) that was developed
specially for industrial paint applications. The carrier resin is a stateof-the-art product, thus ensuring an optimum pigment content
whilst retaining the good rheological properties.
Name
Sandosperse A can be added in the usual amounts to virtually all
types of industrial paint, even to such demanding systems as
oil-free polyester or epoxy resin paints. The Colour Index data
relate to the basic pigments. The data given in the table may vary
slightly because these pigment preparations are standardized in
respect to tinctorial strength.

Savisol® liquid dyes
Savisol liquid dyes are highly concentrated and stable solutions of
selected Savinyl powder dyes based on a polar organic solvent
system. A supply form is therefore offered, which is both convenient
to use and cost effective. Although Savisol liquid dyes are primarily
recommended for solvent systems, they can be used with particular
care in some lower VOC applications by diluting with de-ionised
water or water/alcohol mixtures. The concentration of the Savisol
liquid dyes is indicated within the description of the displayed
panels.

Overview arranged by Colour Index data (generic name)
5.1
Pigments/pigment preparations
The following overview lists our pigments, pigment preparations
and dyes already published in the Colour Index, arranged by their
generic name.
If only the generic name but not the C.I. No. is given, the product
was published without details of its constitution.
We would point out that identical generic names simply indicate
identical chemical composition. The application properties of
colorants are however influenced to a greater or lesser extent
not only by their chemical composition but also by numerous other
factors such as particle size distribution, crystallinity, surface
treatment, impurities etc. For this reason products having identical
compositions and identical generic names may differ completely
in their application properties.

ihren anwendungstechnischen Eigenschaften voneinander abweichen.
