CERT Basic Training Unit 1: Disaster Preparedness 1-3 CERT History ● Idea of CERT – Mexico City Earthquake of 1985 ● Implemented by LAFD in 1985 ● FEMA adopted/expanded into National Program ● All 50 States, 3 Territories and numerous foreign countries have adopted CERT. CERT Basic Training Unit 1: Disaster Preparedness 1-4 Walnut Creek CERT History ● CERT program implemented in Walnut Creek in 2006 ● CERT areas of responsibility established in 2007 and Area Coordinators appointed ● CERT Area “Cache” program proposed and adopted in 2008 ● CERT volunteer training assumed by Walnut Creek volunteers in 1/2009 ● 1,450 CERT volunteers trained to date in 2014 ● Eight caches ICS teams established to date in 2014. In your neighborhood there is a large swimming pool complex with lots of people swimming, sunning, at the snack bar and in the locker rooms. An 8.0 earthquake hits. Team Exercise ● Team 1: List everything that you see and/or hear. ● Team 2: List everything you wish you had with you to respond. ● Team 3: List everything that could have been done in advance to prevent some of the damages and injuries. ● Team 4: List everything that needs to happen in order to resume a normal life.
