STATEMENTS Mircea Bobina, director In my movies I am not trying to teach people what is good or bad, or which choices to make in their life. More than once the complexity of life demonstrated to me that I was wrong in my visions and interpretation of reality. My goal is to emphasize the problem, to make people think about it and to help them find their own solution. Andrej, an Afghanistan War veteran and the protagonist of my story, is a character full of ambiguous qualities and shortcomings. He steals, helps, loves and kills. His war experiences have changed Andrej’s life like they have changed the lives of all veterans around us. Through Andrej’s story I want to make people understand the dramatic personal consequences of an absurd war. Andrej is a man whose actions should be understood, if not necessarily forgiven. His dreams, goals and desires should not be confronted with society’s indifference. I want to make this movie because Andrej was my neighbour and a good family friend. When I was 13, I was at home alone and somebody knocked hard on our door. I was scared and I didn’t open. It was Andrej, he thought his wife didn’t want to let him in and he crashed the door. He saw me scared and ran away. I have never seen him since but now I meet him again in my script. As a director I work very closely with each member of my team. I perseveringly ask them for their opinions concerning everything we encounter on our way. In my opinion, the team makes the movie. I am only showing them the way, giving them the opportunity to do what they can do best. But everybody has to be obsessed with something, has to be able to connect to some aspect of the story in a special, maybe personal way, in order to increase the desire to realize the film. I have worked on two co-productions so far and I was amazed how productive it was. The unique personal experiences, creative perspectives and professional skills that international team members contributed to the projects helped to create movies that would never have been shot this way otherwise. If I have the choice I will always make my movies co-productions. Ion is an experienced screenwriter who sees things differently than me. This gives me the possibility to see the mistakes I made in the process of writing. When we began to work on the script he became very good friends with our characters and it was hard to convince him to take a break. I am also very happy to work with my cinematographer, because I trust her, and I like her visual sensitivity. She can express emotions through little details that most other cinematographers don’t pay attention to, she shares my desire to experiment, and what is most important, she is never indifferent but always has a strong opinion. I chose Stefan as my editor once again because of his great enthusiasm for discovering new ways of editing and composing shots, and for his original ideas that help me resolve editing problems which are the results of mistakes we made on set. We have put together a great team, connected through friendship and mutual respect for each other’s work, and collectively obsessed with the same goal – to shoot In the Sidecar. Ion Bordian, scriptwriter To be honest, I prefer the Hollywood style of screenwriting, but Mircea’s idea got me very interested. That’s because Moldova and Moldavians have always been presented in cinema as happy Soviet people, as gypsies or as stupid. Mircea’s idea wants to show Moldova in a different way. It sets a personal drama, the consequences of the main character’s traumatic war experience and his struggle to be with his family (a struggle for normality), against the historical backdrop of great political changes: the end of the USSR, and the beginning of another struggle for normality for all its ex-member countries. I strongly believe that with the help of a German co-production we will finish the project successfully. Annegret Sachse, cinematographer I am a cinematographer with a strong background in the arts and a vivid interest in experimental filmmaking. I enjoy shooting with intelligent, straightforward people who have original ideas, a good sense of humor, and the determination to work hard. I work with Mircea because he is a director who fulfills all the above. Moreover, he fully understands the importance of camera language when translating a script into a film. He highly appreciates the cinematographer’s skill and sensitivity, which makes it a great pleasure to work with him. Since we met we have developed a close professional relationship and have discussed many of his script ideas. In June 2013 we successfully shot our first short in Chisinau – De-a Baba Oarba, currently in postproduction. I have seen Mircea’s script In the Sidecar evolve over time and I am excited to work on the visual concept for a story in which some things are not what they seem. I will be able to rely on a dear and professional crew that has already worked with each other on several other projects. Stefan Nistor, editor In the Sidecar is exactly the type of story I would like to work on as an editor. The protagonist’s actions, his spontaneity and manifestation of the Afghanistan Syndrome give a lot of space for creative editing. I like the way the director feels the story and how he chooses to communicate it. We worked together on several projects and I like that Mircea is not afraid of experimenting during the editing process. We always find ways to emphasize details that shape the dramaturgy, and always manage to find solutions for mistakes that have been made on the set. Here in Moldova the rhythm and mood of In he Sidecar are familiar to us, we “know” and understand the protagonist, because almost everyone has relatives, friends or comrades who fought in Afghanistan. We call them – Afganet, which means “a little bit crazy”. I compare editing with music, I play on the keyboard, and all I still need is the material to make it sound in an Afganet manner. FAQ Where did the director and the cinematographer first meet? Mircea and Annegret met for the first time during the 2011 edition of Film Art Interaction Workshop in Serbia. They have since developed a close professional relationship and shot their first fiction short together in June 2013 – the low-budget VHS production De-a Baba Oarba. HFF Konrad Wolf agreed to let Annegret shoot her B.A. project with an external director, and the team, which was formed already for Sidecar’s Robert Bosch Co-Production Prize application in 2012, now gets the chance to finally shoot this film. Why is UNATC co-producing the short film? UNATC is supporting us with equipment which is not available in Moldova and would be expensive to transport to Chisinau from Germany. The cinematographer’s connection to Romania dates back to 2010, when she participated in the Aristoteles Documentary Workshop in Vama/Suceava. There she met the current UNATC Film Faculty Dean, Sorin Botoseneanu, and the Romanian cinematographer Carmen Tofeni, who has since become a very close colleague, and will once more be her first assistant camera on Sidecar. How is AMTAP involved in this co-production? The Moldovan Academy for Music, Theatre and Fine Arts AMTAP is not a co-producer but an official supporter of the Sidecar short film project, just like the City of Chisinau. Mircea is currently enrolled in the AMTAP Master degree Directing Animation, but will shoot Sidecar as an external project. CURRICULUM VITAE Mircea Bobîn!
