Englisch Cranberries CRANBERRY FACTS Cranberries are one of North America‘s three native fruits (concord grapes and blueberries are the others). Almost 1,000 years ago wild cranberries were very important for the Native Americans. They ate the fresh wild cranberries or dried them for later use. The cranberries were an essential part of their diet. For example they created „pemmican“, a kind of cereal bar, and took it with them on long trips. Special fruit needs special cultivation… Today cranberries are grown in huge wetlands. Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon and Washington are the five states across the northern part of the United States which are the largest producers of cranberries. These regions offer the special conditions that cranberries require, including sandy soil, plenty of fresh water and a growing season from May to October. Cranberries grow in beds which are in general known as „bogs“ or „marshes“. Cranberry vines will bear fruit indefinitely with proper care. Some cranberry bogs have vines that are over 100 years old. …and a very special harvest The cranberry harvest begins in mid-September and extends for a few weeks. For more than 100 years, the fruit was picked by hand and the whole town turned out for the harvest. They used wooden hand rakes to comb the cranberries from the vines. Today there are two methods, wet and dry, to harvest the cranberries. Wet harvested berries are generally processed, while dry harvested berries are most often sold as fresh fruit. Sweet juice and delicious food Fresh cranberries are often served as compote or jelly called cranberry sauce. The sauce is traditionally served with roast turkey at Thanksgiving. PRAXIS-TIPP The Native Americans used cranberry juice for coloring rugs and blankets and also for medicine. The early settlers gave the cranberry its modern name. To them, the pink cranberry blossoms resembled the heads of cranes; therefore the word „crane berry“, later contracted to „cranberry“. In 1816 the first commercial cranberry beds were planted in Dennis, Massachusetts. Wet: Most cranberries are harvested using the wet method. Growers flood their marshes with water then use harvesting machines that loosen the cranberries from the vines. Because of small air pockets in their center, the cranberries float on the water‘s surface and growers collect the berries. Harvest Cranberry - a native fruit Cranberry Facts -1- Dry: A small amount of cranberries are dry harvested. This process uses mechanical pickers that „comb“ the berries and conveyor belts carry them to attached bags. These bags are emptied into bins and delivered to fresh fruit stations where the berries go through a bounce test: The good berries will bounce the others won‘t. Dry harvested berries are sold as fresh fruit. The berry is also used in baking like muffins, scones and cakes. But the cranberry is normally too sour to be eaten on its own. A major use of cranberries is to make cranberry juice. The juice is usually sweetened or mixed with other fruit juice.
