Coming into June, there are some great events on the calendar. The New England Classic Trail Rider, hosted by the Merrimack Valley Trail Riders, is NETRA's
best-a ended event, usually drawing 500+ riders over two days. Fun trails
and dirt roads, great sponsored lunches, a new bike giveaway, and a unique
camping venue at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway provide a unique experience for any off-road enthusiast - and it all benefits a great charity the
Cys c Fibrosis Founda on. A er some unfortunate hijinks last year let's all be
on our best behavior around the Speedway, don't be "that guy" who loses
our track privileges. Other events in June include the King Philip Trail Riders'
Pee Wee/Junior Enduro/Enduro weekend and Hard Knox's Pee Wee event.
A er a month layoff the NETRA Hare Scrambles series will be back in ac on
at the Berkshire Trail Riders' Satan's Kingdom race, which will also feature a
Pee Wee, Junior Enduro, and Vintage race the same weekend. A great slate of
events this month, so adjust those chains, install some new rubber, and hit it!
See you on the trails!
President’s Message
A er a short delay from our winter hangover, the
New England riding season is in full swing. All of the
various public riding areas are open, and NETRA
offers at least one riding and/or racing opportunity
virtually every weekend. The temps have been
good and not much rain so the early season riding
has been pre y epic. The championship races are
already hea ng up, and we've had some great recrea onal rides at Thomaston Dam, Freetown, and Rhode Island. I would be
remiss to not men on that the inaugural season of our Vintage Series
launched in conjunc on with the Nutmeg Scramblers hare scramble, and 28
crusty veterans showed up with machines from various eras to do ba le on
Trail Boss Mike Hery's vintage-friendly course. Much fun was had and a solid
turnout for the first race.
BIG BIKE / ADVENTURE RIDING
BY J. BRAUN
Weekend Warriors
You've worked hard all week and you're ready to hit
the trails. It's warm, sunny, and you're feeling good.
Maybe it's your first me this year or maybe you haven't been out for a few weeks, but now is the me and
this is the place.
Let's go over the checklist one more me: Bike, Body
and Mind
Bike – I'll assume you checked your oil, re pressure,
and chain slack. Do you have a tool kit? Have you
looked at it recently? Does it have a spark plug
wrench? Tie wraps? Tire irons? Spare tube? Buddy tow
strap?
You're going into the woods and AAA is not going to
come get you. A er the first 1/4 mile your buddies are
not going to want to push your dead bike no ma er
how much of their favorite refreshment you promise
them.
One of the most overlooked tools is a spark plug
wrench. Why? If you fall over in a puddle and the engine sucks water, the engine will not get past TDC because water doesn't compress like air does. You have
to remove the spark plug to relieve the pressure. Trying to force it can bend the connec ng rod. Big bucks!
Remove the plug and the air filter, spin the engine a
few mes, dry the plug, wring out the air filter (those
blue nitrile gloves are a big help here), and you can
usually restart the engine. Don't forget to change the
oil as soon as you get home!
A front inner tube will work in the back long enough to
get you out of the woods. Flat res are rare but one is
enough to ruin your day if you don't have another
tube and re irons. If you have tubeless res make
sure you have a plug kit.
Tie wraps (or zip es, etc) will fix a mul tude of problems. They are indispensable a er some part goes flying or a panel cracks. Electronics stores have the best
ones including heavy duty versions that are 1/2” wide
and 18” and 24” long. You can always hook a couple
together to make a longer one.
When all else fails, a buddy tow strap is worth its
weight in gold. Tie it to the lead bike but only wrap it
around the handle bars on the towed bike and hold it
with your clutch hand. You want to be able to let go

you lose your balance.
get be er. Or split up into fast and slow groups. Don't
ride over your head.
Body – Whatever you do all week, it probably isn't riding in  Be ready to bail out early! Some mes it's just not your

make sure that you enjoy it fully.
Google “dirt bike exercises” and you will get sever suggesons such as: h p://www.dirt-bike- ps-and-pics.com/
motocross-fitness.html
Strength alone is not enough for a long ride. It has to be
matched with endurance. Go for a walk a couple of nights
a week. Do it at a brisk pace, not a casual stroll, if you want
the best results. For maximum effec veness get out your
bicycle and go for a ride. This is a two-fer; you increase
your strength and endurance, and you work on your balance and stability. Look for a Rails-To-Trails route near you
for a walk or ride away from motor vehicle traffic.
Lastly, check the snacks and eat healthy. Skip the cheeseburger and fries and try a salad with fish or chicken once or
twice a week. Out on the trail granola or energy bars will
keep you going. Make sure you drink plenty of water!! Dehydra on is a major problem when it's hot and you're
swea ng.
MIND – All the cycle magazines show macho riders doing
wheelies or railing through turns at maximum velocity on
their dirt bikes. Which can be a ton of fun if you have the
skills, are in perfect shape, and get paid to do it.
If you're reading this column you are more likely to want to
have a pleasant ride with moderate challenges that leave
you with a smile at the end of the day. So check your ego
at the trail head and take it easy.
 Be ready to take a break when you get red. Fa gue
drains your strength and ability to hold a line. Pull over,
drink some water, and maybe eat some trail mix or a
granola bar.
 Check out a difficult part before you charge through it.
Ge ng off the bike and walking through the line you
intend to take will insure that it's the best path and
you see what you're dealing with. O en you'll see that
another line is be er and easier.
 Skip the “Double Dare” mentality with friends. Work
together to make sure that everyone has fun. If one
rider is holding you back, work with them to help them

New
Championship Series
The NETRA Competition Committee has voted in favor of a Championship Vintage
Hare Scrambles series for 2015! A Vintage Competition subcommittee, comprised of
five long-time NETRA members and vintage fanatics, has been created to define the
classes and rules for this exciting new series.
This series is going to give New England and New York a 12 round vintage series built
by people that eat, sleep, live and breath vintage off-road! All vintage races will be
held on Saturdays as a stand-alone event or in conjunction with NETRA Pee Wee or
Junior Enduro rounds. This is going to be an incredibly fun “grass roots” series that
the Northeast has really needed for a long time.
Get those vintage steeds ready!

ABOUT CYSTIC FIBROSIS (CF)
By participating in the Classic, you're creating a brighter future for thousands of children and
adults living with this complex disease. CF is a genetic disease that affects the digestive and
respiratory systems. There is no cure. The necessary funds to battle this devastating disease are
raised through special events like the Classic. With your help over the past 34 years, the Classic
has raised $2,154,000 for the CF Foundation and has made a lasting impact in the quest for a
cure and given the children and adults with CF the quality of life and future they deserve.
Important note on attendance for people with CF and their families:
The health and well-being of people with cystic fibrosis is our top priority. Medical evidence shows that certain bacteria can
be passed between individuals who have CF and can lead to worse symptoms and speed decline in lung function.
To limit the serious risk of cross-infection between people with CF, at any outdoor event,
people with CF should maintain a distance of at least 6 feet from each other.
