Wir heissen Sie zur 41. Ausgabe des Internationalen Jazzfestivals Bern herzlich willkommen.
Wir bedanken uns sehr für Ihre Treue und Ihren Enthusiasmus in Bezug auf unser Jazzfestival,
das seit mittlerweile 41 Jahren durchgeführt wird. Spezieller Dank gilt an dieser Stelle unseren
Sponsoren und Partnern, ohne deren wertvolle Unterstützung die Durchführung des Festivals nicht
möglich wäre.
Den Auftakt der diesjährigen Ausgabe bildet die «Opening Night» mit dem packenden Monty
Alexander Express sowie einem einzigartigen Konzert des Swiss Jazz Orchestras, das auf den Ausnahmesaxophonisten Joshua Redman trifft. Die «Opening Night» ist in vielerlei Hinsicht ein Tribut
an die Anfänge: die Hauptkonzerte der Festivals von 1976 bis 2002 fanden allesamt im Kursaal Bern
statt. Das Swiss Jazz Orchestra ist seit seiner Gründung erfreulicherweise ebenfalls zum vierten Mal
Gast am Internationalen Jazzfestival Bern.
Die 2015 erstmals eingeführten «Double Feature Weeks» fanden grossen Anklang beim Publikum
und werden deshalb um eine weitere Woche ergänzt. Wir freuen uns zudem sehr, dieses Jahr gleich
zwei aktuelle Grammy-Award-Gewinner bei uns zu Gast zu haben: Sowohl Jon Cleary als auch
Cécile McLorin-Salvant erhielten in diesem Februar die begehrte Trophäe.
Am 8. Mai lädt Catherine Russell im Hotel Schweizerhof erneut zu einem mitreissenden und swingenden Muttertagskonzert ein. Sie hat wiederum – exklusiv für dieses Konzert – ein einzigartiges
Projekt mit grossartigen Musikern zusammengestellt.
Der Abschlussevent am 21. Mai wird analog letztem Jahr auf dem ganzen Grundstück der Inneren
Enge stattfinden. Feiern Sie mit uns einen ganzen Tag lang mit vielen Konzerten, kulinarischen
Köstlichkeiten und weiteren Überraschungen. Die Details dazu werden Ende März bekannt gegeben.
Im beliebten Jazzzelt – der Eintritt ist nach wie vor gratis – finden erneut Konzerte von Jazzstudenten aus Bern und den USA statt. Die ersten zwei Wochen werden zum 13. Mal in Zusammenarbeit
mit der HKB präsentiert. Danach treten erstmals während einer Woche Jazzstudenten von der «Juilliard University New York» auf, gefolgt von 6 Wochen mit Studenten der «The New School for Jazz
and Contemporary Music in NYC». Zum Abschluss präsentieren wir erneut das Quartett «Bradford,
Thompson, Wishall, Silverstein», welches 2015 das Publikum des Jazzzelts zu begeistern vermochte.
Wir wünschen allen Konzertbesuchern mitreissende Stunden während der zehn Wochen,
in der Bern in ein Jazz- und Bluesmekka verwandelt wird.

Monty Alexander wurde 1944 in Kingston,
Jamaica geboren und gehört schon lange zu
den gesuchtesten Jazzpianisten überhaupt.
Ideenreichtum, rhythmische Kraft und Klangfeinheit zeichnen sein perlend swingendes
Klavierspiel aus, das Vitalität und Subtilität wie selbstverständlich vereinigt. Schon
Frank Sinatra meinte: «Dieser Bursche ist wie
Sprengstoff». Während seiner sich über 5 Jahrzehnte erstreckenden Karriere festigte Monty
sich seinen Ruf, in dem er die musikalischen
Identitäten von Amerikanischem Jazz, populären Songs und Musik seiner Heimat Jamaika
erforschte und kombinierte. Monty arbeitete
mit zahlreichen Musikern diverser musikalischer Genres zusammen. So assistierte er 1991
Natalie Cole bei ihrem Tribut-Album an ihren
Vater Nat «King» Cole (das Album «Unforgettable» gewann sieben Grammy-Awards),
spielte unter der Leitung von Bobby McFerrin
George Gershwin’s «Rhapsody in Blue» live
am Verbier-Festival in der Schweiz und spielte für die Filmmusik von Clint Eastwood’s
«Bird» (ein Film über das Leben der Jazzlegende Charlie Parker) die Klavier-Tonspur
ein. Monty Alexander spielte und/oder machte
Aufnahmen mit Künstlern aus verschiedenen
Ecken des musikalischen Spektrums, wie z.B.
mit Frank Sinatra, Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie,
Sonny Rollins, Clark Terry, Victor Gaskin, Milt
Jackson, Ernie Wilkins, Herb Ellis, Jeff Hamilton, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Barbara
Hendricks, Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare
und vielen anderen. Im August 2000 erhielt
Monty von der Jamaikanischen Regierung –
für ausserordentliche Verdienste als weltweiter
musikalischer Botschafter für Jamaika - den
Titel «Commander in the Order of Distinction». Im Jahr 2009 präsentierte Monty im «Jazz
at Lincoln Center» sein neues Projekt «Harlem-Kingston Express», in welchem er klassischen Jazz mit Rhythmen und musikalischen
Formen seiner Heimat Jamaika verschmilzt. In
dieser Formation spielte Monty am Jazzfestival Bern 2012. Monty Alexander unternimmt
weiterhin zahlreiche weltweite Tourneen – von
Jazz Clubs bis zu Konzerthallen – und ist an
Jazzfestivals in der Schweiz, Südafrika, Japan
und Australien zu finden. Bisher veröffentlichte Monty über 70 Alben als Bandleader.
Houston Person wurde am 10. November
1934 geboren und betätigt sich auch als Plattenproduzent. Obwohl er auch in den Hard
Bop und Swing Genres zuhause ist, ist Housten am bekanntesten für seine Soul Jazz-Aufnahmen. Unverkennbar sind auch sein frecher
und knackiger Klang sowie sein expressiver
Stil. 1982 erhielt Housten den Eubie Blake
Award. Er ist auf über 75 Veröffentlichungen
als Bandleader zu hören.
Herlin Riley wurde am 15. Februar 1957 in
New Orleans, Louisiana geboren. Von 1984
bis 1987 war Herlin ein Mitglied von Ahmad
Jamal’s Gruppe und danach machte er Aufnahmen mit Marcus Roberts, Dr. John, Harry
Connick Jr., George Benson, Benny Wallace,
Mark Whitfield und vielen anderen. Herlin
Riley ist einer dieser raren Meister des Jazz,
welche in der Tat alles «zum swingen» bringen
können!

Monty Alexander was born in 1944 in Kingston, Jamaica and is one of today’s most
sought-after pianists. He began playing the
piano at the age of four. Monty is such a virtuoso on his instrument that he can express
each of his improvisational ideas at any time.
Swinging style, combined with his vitality and
subtlety, is defined by his creativity, rhythmic
strength and clearly accentuated sounds. Even
Frank Sinatra commented “this guy is like dynamite”. In a career spanning five decades, he
has built a reputation exploring the worlds of
American jazz, popular song, and the music
of his native Jamaica, finding in each a sincere
spirit of musical expression. His musical collaborations span multiple genres and styles.
His projects have been as varied as assisting
Natalie Cole in her tribute album to her father, Nat “King” Cole in 1991 (that album,
“Unforgettable”, won seven Grammy awards),
performing George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in
Blue” under the direction of Bobby McFerrin
at the Verbier Festival in Switzerland, and
recording the piano track for the film score of
Clint Eastwood’s “Bird”, a movie about the life
of jazz titan Charlie Parker. Monty has performed and recorded with artists from every
corner of the musical universe: Frank Sinatra,
Ray Brown, Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins,
Clark Terry, Victor Gaskin, Milt Jackson, Ernie Wilkins, Herb Ellis, Jeff Hamilton, Quincy Jones, Ernest Ranglin, Barbara Hendricks,
Sly Dunbar, and Robbie Shakespeare, among
many others. In August 2000 Monty Alexander was awarded the title of Commander in

the Order of Distinction by the Jamaican government for outstanding services to Jamaica in
his capacity as worldwide music ambassador.
Alexander returned to Jazz at Lincoln Center
in 2009 with a new program, Harlem Kingston
Express in which he merged classic Jazz with
rhythms and vibrations of his native Jamaica.
With this group, Monty has played in Marians
during the International Jazzfestival 2012. Alexander maintains a rigorous touring schedule
worldwide, from jazz clubs to concert halls
and playing at Jazz Festivals from Switzerland
to South Africa, Japan and Australia. To date
Monty Alexander has recorded over 70 albums
as a leader.
Houston Person was born on November 10,
1934 and is also a record producer. Although he
has performed in the hard bop and swing genres, he is best known for his work in soul jazz.
Person is also known for his distinctive sassy
sound and his expressive style of playing. He
received the Eubie Blake Jazz Award in 1982.
Houston has released more than 75 albums as
a bandleader,
Herlin Riley was born February 15, 1957, in
New Orleans, Louisiana. Herlin was a member
of Ahmad Jamal’s group from 1984 through
1987. He has recorded with Marcus Roberts,
Dr. John, Harry Connick, Jr., George Benson,
Benny Wallace, Mark Whitifield, among others. Herlin Riley is one of those rare jazz masters, who’ll truly “swing anything”.

Joshua Redman ist einer der gefeiertsten und
charismatischsten Jazzmusiker, der in den
90er-Jahren aufgestiegen ist. Er begann mit
neun Jahren, Klarinette zu spielen, bevor er
sich ein Jahr später dem Instrument zuwandte, mit welchem er in erster Linie berühmt
werden sollte: dem Tenorsaxophon. Seine
erste CD «Joshua Redman» veröffentlichte
Joshua im Frühling 1993. Prompt erhielt er
dafür seine erste Grammy-Nomination. In
kurzer Zeit entwickelte sich Joshua zu einem
der standhaftesten, gefragtesten, talentiertesten und erfolgreichsten Bandleaders des Jazz.
Nebst seinen eigenen Projekten spielte und/
oder machte Joshua Aufnahmen mit Musikern
wie Ray Brown, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea,
Jack DeJohnette, Bill Frisell, Larry Goldings,
Charlie Haden, Herbie Hancock, Roy Hargrove, Roy Haynes, Milt Jackson, Elvin Jones,
Quincy Jones, B.B. King, Joe Lovano, Branford
Marsalis, Christian McBride, Brad Mehldau,
Pat Metheny, Marcus Miller, Nicholas Payton,
Dianne Reeves, The Rolling Stones, The Roots,
John Scofield, Clark Terry, Toots Thielemans,

und zahlreichen anderen. Joshua wurde bereits für 2 Grammys nominiert und taucht bei
Leserumfragen in Publikationen wie DownBeat, Jazz Times, The Village Voice oder dem
Rolling Stone immer wieder an der Spitze der
beliebtesten Musiker auf.
Das Swiss Jazz Orchestra (SJO) ist die meistbeschäftigte professionelle Big Band der
Schweiz. Die 2003 gestartete wöchentliche
Konzertserie wird in Bern weitergeführt. Daneben tritt das SJO mit Projekten verschiedenster Stilrichtungen auf, welche auf bisher 9 CDs
dokumentiert sind. Das SJO hat mit international gefeierten Künstlern wie Alex Sipiagin,
Chico Pinheiro, Torun Erisken, Claudio Roditi, Jerry Bergonzi, Phil Woods, Buddy DeFranco, Jim McNeely, Bob Mintzer, Bert Joris, George Gruntz, Paquito D’Rivera, Anat Cohen,

Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed
and charismatic jazz artists to have emerged
in the decade of the 1990s. He began playing
clarinet at age nine before switching to what
became his primary instrument, the tenor saxophone, one year later. Joshua issued his first,
self-titled album in the spring of 1993, which
subsequently earned Redman his first Grammy
nomination. He quickly established himself as
one of the music’s most consistent and successful bandleaders. In addition to his own projects, Joshua has recorded and performed with
musicians such as Ray Brown, Dave Brubeck,
Chick Corea, Jack DeJohnette, Bill Frisell,
Larry Goldings, Charlie Haden, Herbie Hancock,
Roy Hargrove, Roy Haynes, Milt Jackson, Elvin
Jones, Quincy Jones, B.B. King, Joe Lovano,
Branford Marsalis, Christian McBride, Brad
Mehldau, Pat Metheny, Marcus Miller, Nicholas
Payton, Dianne Reeves, The Rolling Stones,
The Roots, John Scofield, Clark Terry, Toots

Redman has been nominated for 2 Grammys
and has garnered top honors in critics and

The Swiss Jazz Orchestra is Switzerland’s most
busy professional big band, performing weekly
in Bern. Additionally, they perform and record
projects of varying stilistic content and have
so far released 9 CDs. The SJO has performed
with acclaimed musicians like Alex Sipiagin,
Chico Pinheiro, Torun Erisken, Claudio Roditi,

Shemekia Copeland ist eine Bluesartistin, die
in jeder Hinsicht ernst genommen werden
muss. Bereits in ihren 20ern eröffnete sie für
die Rolling Stones, war Headlinerin am Chicago Blues Festival und diversen weiteren Festivals weltweit, überzeugte Kritiker auf beiden
Seiten des Atlantik und teilte die Bühne mit
Musikern wie Buddy Guy, B.B. King, Taj Mahal
und John Mayer. Shemekia folgt der Tradition
Soul-durchtränkten Diven wie Ruth Brown,
Etta James und Koko Taylor und ist deshalb
klar eine Anwärterin auf den Titel «Queen Of
The Blues». Nach gewissen Massstäben hat sie
diesen sogar schon erreicht. Shemekia’s Hingabe – gekoppelt mit ihrer wuchtigen, feurigen Stimme – verleiht ihrer Musik eine zeitlose
Kraft und eine packende Intimität. Ihr Sound
kommt direkt aus ihrer Seele und wurde von
den Strassen, in denen sie aufgewachsen ist,
beeinflusst. Shemekia wurde 1979 in Harlem,
New York, geboren. Ihr Vater, die verstorbene
Texas Blues-Legende Johnny Clyde Copeland,
bemerkte das Talent seiner Tochter schon
früh. Er ermutigte sie stets dazu, zu Hause
zu singen und brachte sie als 8-jährige sogar
auf die Bühne des berühmten Cotton Clubs
in Harlem. Als 19-jährige machte Shemekia
mit ihrem 1998 veröffentlichten Debut-Album «Turn The Heat Up» den ersten Schritt
aus dem Schatten ihres Vaters – zur Begeisterung der Kritiker. Im folgenden Jahr hatte sie
einen Auftritt im Film «Three To Tango» und
ihr Song «I Always Get My Man» war im Film
«Broken Hearts Club» zu hören. Ihr zweites
Album «Wicked» wurde 2000 veröffentlicht
und brachte ihr drei «Handy Awards» und eine
Grammy-Nomination ein. Zwei Jahre später
produzierte die New Orleans R&B-Legende
Dr. John ihre dritte Veröffentlichung, «Talking
To Strangers». 2005 folgte die CD «The Soul
Truth», welche vom legendären Stax-Gitarristen Steve Cropper (welcher auch mitspielte)
produziert wurde und grosszügige Dosen von
Blues, Funk und Memphis-Soul beinhaltete.
Shemekia’s vorletzte Veröffentlichung «Never
Going Back» (2009) stellte ein neues Kapitel
in ihrer Geschichte dar und repräsentierte
eine Wegkreuzung ihrer artistischen Reise. Ihr
nächstes Album, “33 1/3” wurde von Oliver
Wood produziert und auf Telarc in 2012 veröffentlicht. Ob sie nun Blues Rock, Soul, gospelhaltigen R&B oder eine countrygetränkte
Ballade von sich gibt – eines wird schnell klar:
niemand sonst klingt wie Shemekia Copeland.
Ihre Stimme ist abwechselnd vereinnahmend,
bestimmt und antreibend. Shemekia hat ihre
eigene, offene Vision von kontemporärer Blues-, Roots- und Soulmusik und entwickelt sich

Shemekia Copeland is a force to be reckoned
with in the blues. While still in her 20s, she’s
opened for the Rolling Stones, headlined at the
Chicago Blues Festival and numerous festivals
around the world, scored critics choice awards
on both sides of the Atlantic and shared the
stage with such luminaries as Buddy Guy,
B.B. King, Taj Mahal and John Mayer. Heir
to the rich tradition of soul-drenched divas
like Ruth Brown, Etta James and Koko Taylor,
Copeland’s shot at the eventual title of Queen of
the Blues is pretty clear. By some standards, she
may already be there. Copeland’s passion for
singing, matched with her huge, blast-furnace
voice, gives her music a timeless power and
a heart-pounding urgency. Her music comes
from deep within her soul and from the streets
where she grew up. Born in Harlem, New York,
in 1979, Copeland actually came to her singing
career slowly. Her father, the late Texas blues
guitar legend, Johnny Clyde Copeland, recognized his daughter’s talent early on. He always encouraged her to sing at home and even
brought her on stage to sing at Harlem’s famed
Cotton Club when she was just eight. At only
19, Shemekia stepped out of her father’s shadow with her 1998 debut recording, “Turn the
Heat Up!”, and the critics raved. A year later,
she appeared in the Motion Picture “Three To
Tango”, while her song “I Always Get My Man”,
was featured in the film “Broken Hearts Club”.
Her second album, “Wicked”, released in 2000,
scored three Handy Awards and a Grammy
nomination. Two years later, New Orleans
R&B legend Dr. John stepped in to produce her
third recording, “Talking To Strangers” (2002).
Copeland released “The Soul Truth” in 2005.
The album was produced by legendary Stax
guitarist Steve Cropper (who also played on
the CD), and featured generous doses of blues,
funk and Memphis-flavored soul. Her 2009 release “Never Going Back” was a new chapter in
the Shemekia Copeland story and represented
a crossroads on her ongoing artistic journey.
The album “33 1/3” was produced by Oliver
Wood and released in 2012 on Telarc. Whether
she’s belting out a raucous blues-rocker, firing
up a blistering soul-shouter, bringing the spirit
to a gospel-fueled R&B rave-up or digging deep
down into a subtle, country-tinged ballad,
Shemekia Copeland sounds like no one else.
With a voice that is alternately sultry, assertive and roaring, Shemekia’s wide-open vision
of contemporary blues, roots and soul music
showcases the evolution of a passionate artist
with a modern musical and lyrical approach.

Jahren, Gitarre zu spielen. Durch harte Arbeit,
Ausdauer und Beharrlichkeit wurde Mr. Sipp
zu einer kraftvollen Delta Blues-Persönlichkeit, die seinesgleichen sucht! Sowohl seine
Veröffentlichungen wie auch seine Live-Konzerte glänzen durch Mr. Sipp’s Gesangsstil,
Songwriting-Talente, Musikalität und seine
aufgestellte Persönlichkeit! Mr. Sipp erhielt
zahlreiche Auszeichnungen. 2014 waren es die
«International Blues Challenge» der «Vicksburg Blues Society», der «Gibson Best Guitarist Award» und den «Jus’ Blues Bobby Rush
Entertainers Award». 2015 gewann er die
«JMA male artist of the year», «National artist of the year» und «Blues artist of the year»
Awards. Mr. Sipp hatte auch einen Auftritt im
2014 veröffentlichten James Brown-Film »Get
On Up». Mr. Sipp war während 22 Jahren als
Musiker und Produzent im Gospel-Musikbusiness tätig. Seit seinem wichtigen Gewinn
an der «International Blues Challenge» 2014
und der Veröffentlichung seiner Debut-CD
«It’s My Guitar» wurde er von Blues- und Mu-
sikliebhabern allgemein mit offenen Armen
empfangen. Auf seinem Debut-Album singt
Mr. Sipp nicht nur, sondern spielt sämtliche Instrumente selbst ein. Dies vereinfachte
natürlich die Musikerauflistung auf der CD
ungemein! Tatsächlich – als musikalische Talente verteilt wurden, befand sich Mr. Sipp
offensichtlich in der vordersten Reihe! Auch
auf seiner neuen CD «The Mississippi Blues
Child» – seiner ersten auf «Malaco Records»
– ist Mr. Sipp nebst seinem Gesang wiederum auf vielen Instrumenten zu hören. Auf
dieser Veröffentlichung sind nebst ihm selbst
jedoch weitere namhafte «Malaco Mississippi
Hitmen» zu hören. Mit der Ausnahme eines
Songs sind sämtliche Stücke darauf Eigenkompositionen von Mr. Sipp. Sein einzigartiger Stil ist es auch, was diese Veröffentlichung
von zahlreichen anderen Delta Blues-Aufnahmen unterscheidet. Mr. Sipp hat über 130
Aufnahmen «unter seinem Gürtel» und ist auf
über 50 Veröffentlichungen zu hören, wovon
einige für einen Grammy nominiert wurden.
Er ist häufig weltweit auf Tournee und wird in
dieser Konzertwoche auch in Bern seine mitreissende Musik live präsentieren!

Castro Coleman a.k.a Mr. Sipp, “The Mississippi Blues Child” was born August 25, 1976
in the small town of McComb, MS. He began playing the guitar at the tender age of 6.
Through hard work and perseverance, Mr. Sipp
has become a Delta Blues Force to be reckoned
with! Being recognized for his amazing vocals,
songwriting ability, musicianship, ability to
produce records and entertain fans with an
upbeat, outlandish show all make Mr. Sipp
“The Total Package.” Mr. Sipp is the “2014 International Blues Challenge” winner by way
of “The Vicksburg Blues Society” as well as the
“2014 Gibson Best Guitarist Award” winner
and “2014 Jus’ Blues Bobby Rush Entertainers Award” recipient. Mr. Sipp was also cast in

Barbara Morrison wurde in Ypsilanti, Michigan geboren und war schon als Zehnjährige im Detroiter Radio zu hören. 1973, im
Alter von 23 Jahren, zog sie nach Los Angeles.
In der Gegend in und um LA ist Barbara bekannt für ihre Duo- und Trio-Auftritte, während sie in dem Rest der USA, Westeuropa, im
Fernen Osten und in Australien als Jazz- und
Blueslegende gilt und ihr Publikum mit ihrer Band stets aufs neue begeistert. Durch die
Jahre spielte Barbara mit unzähligen Legenden der Jazz und Blues-Welt. Darunter finden
sich Musiker wie Gerald Wilson, Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Charles, James Moody, Ron Carter,
Etta James, Esther Phillips, David T. Walker,
Jimmy Smith, Johnny Otis, Dr. John, Kenny

Hendrix des Bandolims». Während der letzten
14 Jahre entwickelte Hamilton eine spezielle

Hamilton DeHolanda who sets world audiences ablaze, developing a career studded with
awards. The U.S. press soon dubbed him the
“Jimi Hendrix of the bandolim”. Over the past

Joey Alexander wurde 2003 in Denpasar auf
der Insel Bali geboren. Er traf mit sechs Jahren erstmals auf ein Piano und konnte sich die
Melodien von Jazz Standards – aus der Plattensammlung seines Vaters – merken und nur
nach Gehör nachspielen. Joey’s Vater – selbst
ein Amateurmusiker – förderte Joey’s Begabung für Swing und Improvisation, indem
er ihm klassische Jazz-Aufnahmen vorspielte und ihn zu Konzerten der bedeutensten
Musiker von Bali und Jakarta mitnahm. Von
diesem Zeitpunkt an blühten Joey’s musikalische Intuition und seine Liebe für Jazz auf.
Joey’s früheste musikalische Einflüsse waren
Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans
und John Coltrane. Eine spezielle Affinität
entwickelte Joey zu Trompetern wie Clifford
Brown, Lee Morgan, Miles Davis und Wynton Marsalis. Obwohl er nie formell geschult
wurde, entwickelte Joey eine präzise Technik
und machte sich dank seiner ernormen Musikalität innerhalb und ausserhalb der Indonesischen Jazz-Szene einen Namen. Mit 8 Jahren
wurde Joey von der UNESCO dazu eingeladen, ein Piano Solo-Konzert für Herbie Hancock während dessen Indonesien-Aufenthalts
zu spielen. Herbie’s Reaktion war äusserst enthusiastisch, was Joey enorm inspirierte. Mit 10
Jahren trat Joey an Jazzfestivals in Jakarta und
Kopenhagen auf. In Odessa, Ukraine gewann
er den «International Improvisation Contest» – und liess damit über 200 professionelle
Jazz-Musiker aus 17 Ländern leer ausgehen.
2014 trat Joey an hochangesehenen Galas in
New York City auf – für Jazz At Lincoln Center in der Rose Hall, für die Jazz Foundation
Of America im Apollo und am Arthur Ashe
Lerning Center in der Gotham Hall. Am
12. Mai 2015 veröffentlichte Joey Alexander
sein heiss erwartetes Debut-Album «My Favorite Things» auf dem Grammy-prämierten
Label Motema Music aus Harlem. Auf seinem
Debut spielt Joey Klassiker von Coltrane bis
Rodgers & Hammerstein mit grossem Feingefühl, Abenteuerlust und voll improvisatorischem Elan. «My Favorite Things» wurde vom
Grammygewinner Jason Olaine produziert.
Das Album wurde in diesem Jahr für einen
Grammy nominiert – in der Kategorie «Best
Jazz Instrumental Album». Seither spielte Joey
bereits an Orten wie dem Rochester Jazz Festival, dem Newport Jazz Festival, Jazz At Lincoln Center, an einer TED-Konferenz, Marciac
und im Marians Jazzroom. Für diesen jungen,
höchst talentierten, Künstler steht die Zukunft
weit offen.

Born on the island of Bali in the city of Denpasar
in 2003, Joey Alexander first encountered a piano at the age of six, and was immediately able
to pick out the melody of jazz standards from
his father’s record collection by ear. His father,
an amateur musician, nurtured Joey’s gift for
swing and improvisation by introducing him
to classic jazz recordings and taking him to jam
sessions with seasoned musicians in Bali and Jakarta. From there, his musical intuition flourished, as did his love of playing jazz. Learning
by listening, Joey’s early influences include
Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Bill Evans
and John Coltrane, and he has a special affinity
for trumpet players including Clifford Brown,
Lee Morgan, Miles Davis and Wynton Marsalis. Despite his lack of formal jazz training, Joey
developed an authoritative technique, and with
his depth of musicality he quickly rose in the Indonesian jazz scene and beyond. At age 8, UNESCO invited Joey to play solo piano in front of
jazz icon Herbie Hancock during his visit to Indonesia. Joey drew significant inspiration from
Herbie’s enthusiastic response to his playing.
At age 10, Joey was featured at jazz festivals in

from 17 countries. In 2014, Joey performed at
star-studded galas in New York City for Jazz at
Lincoln Center in Rose Hall, the Jazz Foundation of America at the Apollo and the Arthur
Ashe Learning Center at Gotham Hall. In
May 12, 2015, Joey Alexander released his highly anticipated debut album ‘My Favorite Things’
on the Grammy-winning Harlem-based label
Motema Music. On his debut recording, Alexander performs classic tunes from Coltrane to
Rodgers & Hammerstein with a deft touch, adventurous spirit and improvisatory verve. ‘My
Favorite Things’ was produced by Grammy-winning producer Jason Olaine and was nominated for a Grammy this year in the category „Best
Jazz Instrumental Album“. Joey has already
been invited to perform at venues including the
Rochester Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival,
Jazz at Lincoln Center and a TED conference.

Jon Cleary wuchs in einer musikalischen Familie auf. 1980 – nach seinem Schulabschluss –
machte sich Jon auf nach New Orleans. Schon
bald landete Jon einige Gigs als Sideman –
unter anderen mit New Orleans R&B-Legenden wie den Gitarristen Snooks Eaglin und
Earl «Trick Bag» King und den Sängern Johnny Adams oder Jessie Hill. 1989 nahm Jon sein
erstes von bisher acht Alben (inklusive der
neuen CD «GoGo Juice») auf. Seine sich stets
steigernde Virtuosität zeigte ein hohes Mass an
professioneller Vielseitigkeit auf. Dies führte
zu Aufnahmen und internationalen Tourneen
mit Bands diverser Stilrichtungen, wie z.B. mit
Taj Mahal, John Scofield, Dr. John und Bonnie Raitt. Als Songwriter schrieb Jon Songs
für und mit Bonnie Raitt und Taj Mahal. Das
Jahrzehnt, in welchem Jon mit Bonnie arbeitete, führte dazu, dass er von Bonnie als das
«neunte Weltwunder» bezeichnet wurde. Mit
der Veröffentlichung von «GoGo Juice» kehrt
der New Orleans Funk-Meister Jon Cleary
zu den energetischen, souligen und funkigen
Pop-Stücken zurück, für welche ihn Kritiker
seit seinem 1999er-Album «Moonburn» lieben. Nebst seinem unumstrittenen Songwriter-Talent fand Jon auch weltweite Anerken-
nung als äusserst talentierter Keyboarder und
Gitarrist sowie als enorm souliger Sänger. Die
35 Jahre, in denen Jon bereits intensiv in der
Musikszene von New Orleans tätig ist, brachten ihm grossen Respekt von R&B-Ikonen wie
Dr. John und Allen Toussaint ein. Allen Toussaint nahm sich sogar trotz seines überfüllten
Terminkalenders Zeit, die meisten Bläser-Arrangements für «GoGo Juice» zu schreiben.
Nebst dem «Toussaint-Touch» glänzt das
Album auch durch die Präsenz einiger TopSession-Musiker von New Orleans: Zu hören
sind der Keyboarder und Sänger Nigel Hall,
die Dirty Dozen Horns sowie Mitglieder von
Jon’s Band, The Absolute Monster Gentlemen.
Abgerundet wird das Werk vom Produzenten
und Grammy-Gewinner John Porter. Im Februar 2016 gewann «GoGo Juice» den Grammy
in der Kategorie «Best Regional Roots Music
Album». Obwohl Jon Cleary klar von klassischen New Orleans-Keyboardern wie Jelly
Roll Morton, Fats Domino, Art Neville oder
John Booker beeinflusst wurde, braucht er

Jon Cleary was raised in a musical family.
As soon as he was old enough to leave school
in 1980 Cleary took off for the Crescent City.
Soon Jon began to land sideman gigs with the
venerable likes of such New Orleans R&B legends (and his childhood heroes) as guitarists
Snooks Eaglin, and Earl “Trick Bag” King, and
singers Johnny Adams, and Jessie Hill. By 1989,
Cleary had recorded his first album of eight
including the new “GoGo Juice”. His increasingly high-profile performances revealed a level of proficient versatility that led to recording
sessions and international touring work – in
an appropriately wide stylistic range – in the
bands of Taj Mahal, John Scofield, Dr. John
and, most notably, Bonnie Raitt. As a songwriter, he has written and co-written songs
with and for Bonnie Raitt and Taj Mahal and
the decade that he spent working with Raitt
inspired her to unabashedly dub Cleary “the
ninth wonder of the world.” With the release
of “GoGo Juice”, New Orleans funk master Jon
Cleary returns to the hard driving, soulful, and
funky pop tunes that have brought him critical
acclaim since his 1999 album “Moonburn”. Beyond Cleary’s considerable skills as a tunesmith
he is equally renowned around the globe as an
accomplished keyboardist and guitarist, and a
deeply soulful vocalist. Cleary’s thirty-five years
of intensive hands-on work on the Crescent
City scene has made him a respected peer of
such New Orleans R&B icons as Dr. John and
Allen Toussaint. Toussaint, in fact, took time
from his busy schedule to write most of the horn
arrangements for “GoGo Juice”. In addition to
the Toussaint touch, “GoGo Juice” bursts, full
flavor, with expert accompaniment by some of
New Orleans’ top session men – including fellow keyboardist and vocalist Nigel Hall, and
the Dirty Dozen horns– along with members
of Cleary’s band, the Absolute Monster Gentlemen, and the veteran production skills of Grammy Award-winning producer John Porter. This
February, “GoGo Juice” won the 2016 Grammy
in the category “Best Regional Roots Music Album”. While thoroughly steeped in the classic
Crescent City keyboard canon– from Jelly Roll
Morton to Fats Domino to Art Neville, James
Booker, and beyond– Cleary uses that century’s
worth of pianistic brilliance as a point of departure to forge his own unique and eclectic style.

T. S. Monk – Schlagzeuger, Bandleader, Komponist und Sänger – interessierte sich schon
für das Schlagzeug, bevor er 10 Jahre alt wurde. Als er von seinem Lehrer Max Roach sein
erstes Drumkit erhielt, war das Schicksal von
T.S. besiegelt. Später trat der junge T.S. dem
Trio seines Vaters bei und tourte mit ihm bis
zu dessen Pensionierung im Jahr 1975. Darauf tauchte T.S. in jene Musik ein, die ihn und
seine Generation in ihren Bann zog: R&B. Ursprünglich spielte T.S. mit einer Band namens
Natural Essence, kurz danach gründete er mit
seiner Schwester Barbara seine eigene Gruppe.
Für sein Album «Monk On Monk» erhielt T.S.
den ersten «Recording of the Year»-Preis der
New York Jazz Awards sowie den «63rd annual
Album of the year Reader’s Choice»-Preis
des «Downbeat» Magazins. Auf «Monk On
Monk», ein «80th Anniversary Birthday Tribute to Thelonious Sphere Monk», sind über

und Publikum zugleich als echter musikalischer Nachkomme seines Vaters – sowohl als

Kurz nachdem T.S.’ Vater starb und ein enormes musikalisches Vermächtnis hinterliess,
erlag auch seine Schwester an Krebs. Um das
Vermächtnis seines Vaters zu honorieren und
musikalische Bildung zu fördern, konzentrierte sich T.S. auf die Gründung des «Thelonious
Monk Institute of Jazz». Als Vorsitzender setzte sich T. S. in erster Linie dafür ein, verschiedene Bildungsprogramme und Stipendien zu
initiieren, zu finanzieren und zu verankern.
1992 gründete T.S. sein Jazz Sextet und wurde sofort – sowohl für Aufnahmen wie auch
an Konzerten – mit Lob überhäuft. Zusammen mit dem Grammy Award-Gewinner Don
Sickler an der Trompete bildetet T.S. den musikalischen Kern des Sextetts. Ihr innovativer
und dynamischer Stil ist einzigartig und äusserst energiegeladen. T. S. Monk stellt sein Talent und seine Führungsqualitäten ununterbrochen unter Beweis – sei es bei Aufnahmen,

T.S. Monk - drummer, bandleader, composer,
and vocalist was drawn to the drums before the
age of ten. His destiny was sealed when Max
Roach, with whom he studied, gave him his
first drum set. Later, the young Monk joined
his father’s trio and toured with his dad until
the elder Monk’s retirement in 1975. T. S. then
launched into the music that had captivated
him and his generation, R&B. He first toured
with a group called Natural Essence and afterward, along with his sister Barbara, formed
his own band. T. S. received the New York Jazz
Awards First Annual “Recording of the Year”
award and Downbeat’s prestigious 63rd annual Album of the year Reader’s Choice Award
for “Monk On Monk”. “Monk on Monk” is the
“80th Anniversary Birthday Tribute to Thelonious Sphere Monk” featuring twenty guest
artists including Herbie Hancock, Wayne

T. S. Monk as his father’s true musical heir, as

father passed away leaving a rich and legendary legacy, tragically his sister died of cancer.
To honor his father’s legacy and support the
efforts of education, Thelonious turned his attention toward forming the “Thelonious Monk
Institute of Jazz”. As Chairman, Thelonious
has been at the forefront of helping to create
a number of programs that range from sponsoring music education for students in the
form of full scholarships to funding and supporting after-school athletic programs. In 1992,
Thelonious formed his jazz sextet and received
raves from the moment they hit the stage and
the studio. With Grammy Award winning producer Don Sickler on trumpet, the duo has
carved an innovative and dynamic approach
to crafting the T. S. Monk Sextet sound; this
band soars and sizzles. T. S. Monk continues to
display his leadership and artistry through his
recordings and live performances worldwide,
on television and in concert.

Marcus Roberts wuchs in Jacksonville, Florida auf. Der Gospelgesang seiner Mutter und
die Musik der benachbarten Kirche prägten
seinen Stil von Kindheit auf. Nachdem er als
Fünfjähriger das Augenlicht verlor, brachte er sich selbst das Klavierspiel bei. Darauf
studierte Marcus an der Florida State University klassisches Piano. Mit 21 Jahren trat
Marcus Wynton Marsalis’ Band bei und ging
mit ihm während 6 Jahren auf Tournee. Später verliess Marcus Marsalis, um mit seiner
eigenen Band Aufnahmen machen zu können. Die zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen
von Marcus wurden von allen Seiten gelobt
und beleuchten seine immense musikalische
Vielseitigkeit. Zu finden sind Solo-PianoProjekte, Duette, Trio-Arrangements von Jazz
Standards, Originalkompositionen und Big
Band-Projekte sowie Aufnahmen mit Symphonieorchestern. «New Orleans Meets Harlem, Volume 1»(2009) war die erste CD auf
Marcus’ eigenem Label, «J-Master Records».
Es folgten die Weihnachts-CD «Celebrating
Christmas», eine Nonet-Aufnahme einer
selbst verfassten Suite «Deep In The Shed: A
Blues Suite»(2012), und eine Zusammenarbeit des Marcus Roberts Trios mit Béla Fleck
namens «Across The Imaginary Divide». 2013
wurden drei von Kritikern gepriesene Alben
veröffentlicht: «From Rags To Rhythm», «Together Again: Live In Concert»und «Together
Again: In The Studio». 2014 schrieb und veröffentlichte Marcus eine weitere Suite namens
«Romance, Swing, And The Blues». Marcus ist
auch ein gestandener Komponist und erhielt
dafür zahlreiche Auszeichnungen. Kürzlich
wurde er vom Atlanta Symphony Orchestra
und dem Savannah Music Festival damit beauftragt, sein erstes Piano-Konzert zu komponieren: «Spirit Of The Blues: Piano Concerto in C-Minor». Das Konzert wurde mit
dem Atlanta Symphony Orchestra unter der
Leitung von Maestro Robert Spano in 2013
uraufgeführt. Seither spielte Marcus mit Symphonieorchestern weltweit. Marcus setzt sich
seit vielen Jahren auch für die Ausbildung und
Entwicklung junger Musiker ein. Im Mai 2014
wurden seine vielen Beisteuerungen durch die
«Juillard School»mit einem Ehrentitel «Doctor Of Music»honoriert: 2012 machte sich
Markus seine ganzen Erfahrungen zu nutze
und gründete eine komplett neue Band: «The
Modern Jazz Generation». Ihr Debutalbum
wurde im Oktober 2014 veröffentlicht. Eines
ist sicher: es vergeht kein Jahr, in dem Marcus
Roberts nicht auf neue, höchst kreative, Ideen
kommt.

Marcus Roberts grew up in Jacksonville, Florida where his mother’s gospel singing and the
music of the local church left a lasting impact
on his own musical style. After losing his sight
at age five, he began teaching himself to play piano. Roberts later went on to study classical piano at Florida State University. Roberts toured
with Wynton Marsalis starting at age 21 for six
years, when he left to tour and record with his
own band. Roberts’ critically-acclaimed legacy
of recorded music reflects his tremendous versatility as an artist; his recordings include solo
piano, duets, and trio arrangements of jazz
standards as well as original suites of music,
large ensemble works, and symphony orchestra
recordings. Roberts’ release of “New Orleans
Meets Harlem, Volume 1” in 2009 was the first
on his new label, J-Master Records. Since then,
he has released a very popular holiday recording, “Celebrating Christmas”, a nonet recording
of an original suite, “Deep in the Shed: A Blues
Suite” (2012), a collaborative CD of the Marcus
Roberts Trio with Béla Fleck called “Across the
Imaginary Divide”, and in 2013, three critically acclaimed CDs –“From Rags to Rhythm”,
“Together Again: Live in Concert”, and “To-
gether Again: In the Studio”. In 2014, Roberts
released another suite of all-original music,
called “Romance, Swing, and the Blues”. Roberts is an accomplished composer who has received numerous commissioning awards. Most
recently, he was commissioned by the Atlanta
Symphony Orchestra and the Savannah Music
Festival to write his first piano concerto –“Spirit of the Blues: Piano Concerto in C-Minor”.
The concerto was premiered with the Atlanta
Symphony Orchestra under the direction of
Maestro Robert Spano in 2013. Roberts has
since performed with orchestras all over the
world. Finally, Roberts has long been dedicated to the training and development of younger
musicians. In May 2014, Roberts many contributions to the field of music were acknowledged
through the awarding of an honorary Doctor of
Music degree from The Juilliard School. All of
this hard work and experience came together
in 2012 with the founding of a completely new
band – The Modern Jazz Generation, who released their first CD in October of 2014. With
each year that passes, you can count on Marcus Roberts tackling something new.

Herlin Riley wurde am 15. Februar 1957 in
New Orleans, Louisiana geboren und begann
mit 3 Jahren, Schlagzeug zu spielen. Von 1984
bis 1987 war Herlin ein Mitglied von Ahmad
Jamal’s Gruppe. Danach machte er Aufnahmen mit Marcus Roberts, Dr. John, Harry
Connick Jr., George Benson, Benny Wallace,
Mark Whitfield und vielen anderen. Im Frühling 1988 trat Herlin der Band von Wynton
Marsalis bei, mit welcher er bis zu deren Auflösung 1994 zahlreiche Tourneen und Aufnahmen machte. Er spielte auch im Lincoln
Center Jazz Orchestra während dessen erster
Amerika-Tournee («The Music of Duke Ellington») im Herbst 1992. Herlin ist bis heute
ein häufiger Solist bei «Jazz At Lincoln Center»
und veröffentlichte zwei Alben als Bandleader.
Herlin Riley ist einer dieser raren Meister des
Jazz, welche in der Tat alles «zum swingen»
bringen können!
Schon im zartesten Kindesalter war klar, dass
Jason Marsalis das Zeug zum Topmusiker hat.
Jason ist der Sohn des Pianisten und Musiklehrers Ellis Marsalis und seiner Frau Dolores
sowie der jüngste seiner Brüder Wynton, Branford und Delfeayo. Zusammen bilden die

te Jazz-Familie von New Orleans. 1995 übernahm Jason die Rolle des Schlagzeugers in
einer neuen Band, die vom Ex-Pianisten von
Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, gegründet
wurde. Jason ist für seine umwerfende Technik
bekannt und ist seit 2000 auch als Bandleader
und sogar Vibraphonist zu hören.
Shannon Powell ist ein äusserst gefragter
Drummer und Perkussionist, der durch seine
perfekte Technik und seinen einzigartigen Stil
internationale Begeisterung auslöst. Er wuchs
in New Orleans auf und spielt traditionellen
sowie auch modernen Jazz. Shannon spielte
und/oder machte Aufnahmen mit Ellis Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, Dr.
John, John Scofield, Diana Krall, Harry Connick Jr., Johnny Adams, Snooks Eaglin und
vielen anderen. Er ist Bandleader, gibt zahlreiche Kurse und leitet Workshops. Shannon
Powell spielt die solidesten, swingendsten und
kraftvollsten Rhythmen überhaupt.

Herlin Riley was born February 15, 1957, in
New Orleans, Louisiana. He began playing
the drums at age three. Herlin was a member
of Ahmad Jamal’s group from 1984 through
1987. He has recorded with Marcus Roberts,
Dr. John, Harry Connick, Jr., George Benson,
Benny Wallace, Mark Whitifield, among others. In the spring of 1988, he joined Wynton
Marsalis’ touring and recording group, which
he performed with through its disbanding in
late 1994. He also performed on the first Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra United States tour
in the fall of 1992, performing the music of
Duke Ellington. Herlin is a regularly featured
musician at Jazz at the Lincoln Center. He has
released two recordings as a leader. Herlin Riley is one of those rare jazz masters, who’ll truly “swing anything”.

has been a mainstay on the New Orleans scene
as a bandleader from the vibraphone chair as
well. His playing is unique; drawing from a
wide range of influences.
From a tender young age it was clear that Jason Marsalis had what it took to be great. Jason is the son of pianist and music educator
Ellis Marsalis and his wife Dolores, and the
youngest sibling of Wynton, Branford and Delfeayo. Together, the four brothers and their patriarch Ellis, comprise New Orleans venerable
first family of jazz. In 1995, Marsalis ascended
to the drum throne of a new group lead by vir-

vielen mehr! Rossano spielt in der Tradition

vocalist, who defies easy categorization. Her
father, the late Luis Russell, was named by
Louis Armstrong as his musical director and
Russell’s orchestra as his backing group. Catherine’s mother, Carline Ray, was an outstanding
bassist and vocalist and has performed with
Mary Lou Williams and Wynton Marsalis. Ms.
Russell has performed or recorded with artists
like Jackson Browne, Madonna, Al Green,

Ten der Radio Charts und beeindruckte die
nationalen Jazzmedien: JazzTimes, Downbeat,

veröffentlichten enthusiastische Kritiken. Der
«Philadelphia Inquirer» meinte: «Intuition

Obwohl der musikalische Stil dieses Quartetts seine Wurzeln im «Straight Ahead»-Jazz

Trios. Chris Brubeck fühlt sich in Jazz, Rock,
Klassik, Funk und Folk Music gleichermassen

The Brubeck Brothers Quartet is an exciting
jazz group featuring two members of one of
America’s most accomplished musical families: Brothers Dan Brubeck (drums) and Chris
Brubeck (bass & trombone) – sons of the extraordinary pianist Dave Brubeck. Guitarist Mike DeMicco, and pianist Chuck Lamb
complete this dynamic quartet. They have
performed at concert series, colleges, and jazz
festivals across North America and Europe
including the Newport, Detroit, Ravinia, Las
Vegas, Sedona, Spokane & Monterey Jazz
Festivals. These versatile musicians also collaborate with orchestras, and in 2006 ignited the Salt Lake City Jazz Festival by playing
with the Utah Symphony conducted by Keith
Lockhart. With Chris Brubeck’s compositions
as a vehicle, the BBQ has joined with chamber
groups to collaborate with musicians from the
St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Philadelphia

The group’s creativity, technique and improvisation can be heard in their uncompromising music, which reflects their dedication to
melody, rhythm, culture and the spontaneous
spirit of jazz. Dan Brubeck was featured on
nearly a dozen albums with his father, and
toured widely with the Dave Brubeck Quartet.
He’s toured internationally and recorded three
widely played albums with his electric jazz
group, „The Dolphins”, and co-led the Brubeck
LaVerne Trio with his brother Chris and pianist Andy LaVerne. Chris Brubeck is equally
at home playing jazz, rock, classical, funk and
folk music, displaying his multiple talents on
three instruments, Chris also is an award-winning composer. In addition to his instrumental

Javon Jackson war Mitglied der Jazz Messengers, tourte häufig und machte zahlreiche
Aufnahmen mit dem legendären Drummer.
Jackson war ein Member dieser Band bis zu
Art Blakeys verfrühtem Tod 1990. Seit dieser
Zeit spielte und machte Javon Aufnahmen mit
Jazz-Grössen wie Elvin Jones, Charlie Haden,
Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Cedar Walton,
Nat Adderley, Betty Carter, Bobby Hutcherson, Jon Faddis, Stanley Turrentine und
Les McCann.
Der gefragte Pianist George Cables wurde am
14. November 1944 geboren und spielte und/
oder machte Aufnahmen mit den grössten Jazzmusikern unserer Zeit, darunter Art Pepper,
Joe Henderson, Roy Haynes, Max Roach,
Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Freddie Hubbard,
Woody Shaw, Sarah Vaughn, Tony Williams,
Bobby Hutcherson und Dizzy Gillespie. Er ist
berühmt für sein einfühlsames Spiel und wurde so zu einem der beliebtesten Begleitmusiker überhaupt.
Randy Brecker hat während mehr als 30 Jahren den Sound von Jazz, R & B und Rock mitgeformt. Sein Trompeten- und Flügelhornspiel
ist auf hunderten von Alben von solch unterschiedlichen Musikern wie James Taylor, Bruce
Springsteen, Chaka Khan, George Benson,
Parliament-Funkadelics,
Frank
Sinatra,
Steely Dan, David Sanborn, Horace Silver,
Jaco Pastorius oder Frank Zappa zu hören.
Der legendäre Bassist und doppelte
Grammy-Gewinner Eddie Gomez war immer
innovativ und ist seit über vier Jahrzehnten
im Geschäft. Sein beeindruckendes Resumé
beinhaltet Konzerte und Aufnahmen mit JazzGiganten wie Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Bill
Evans, Gerry Mulligan und Benny Goodman.
Eddie’s unverkennbarer Sound und Stil kann

Jimmy Cobb wurde 1929 geboren. Er ist ein
superber, autodidaktischer Musiker, der allen
brillianten Bands von Miles Davis eine gehörige Portion Rückgrat am Schlagzeug vermittelte. Jimmy’s inspirierendes Spiel mit Miles,
John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley und Co.
dauerte von 1957 bis 1963. In diesen Jahren
spielte er auf dem Meisterwerk «Kind of Blue»
– der populärsten Jazz-Veröffentlichung aller
Zeiten – sowie auf «Sketches of Spain», «Someday My Prince will Come», «Live at Carnegie Hall», «Live at the Blackhawk», «Porgy and
Bess» und zahlreichen weiteren Meilensteinen
von Miles Davis.

Javon Jackson was a member of Art Blakey’s
Jazz Messengers and he toured extensively
and made many recordings with the legendary
drummer. Jackson remained a member with
Blakey until the drummer’s untimely death in
1990. Since that time, Javon has performed,
toured and recorded with various Jazz luminaries that include Elvin Jones, Charlie Haden,
Freddie Hubbard, Ron Carter, Cedar Walton,
Nat Adderley, Betty Carter, Bobby Hutcherson,
Jon Faddis, Stanley Turrentine and Les McCann.
Legendary bassist and two-time Grammy
Award winner Eddie Gomez has been on the
cutting edge of music for over four decades. His
impressive resumé includes performances with
jazz giants such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie,
Bill Evans, Gerry Mulligan and Benny Goodman. Eddie’s unique sound and style can be
heard on many Grammy winning records as
well as on hundreds of recordings spanning the
worlds of jazz, classical, Latin jazz, rhythm &
blues, popular and contemporary music.
Randy Brecker has been shaping the sound
of Jazz, R and B and Rock for more than three
decades. His trumpet and flugelhorn performances have graced hundreds of albums
by a wide range of artists from James Taylor,
Bruce Springsteen, Chaka Khan, George Benson
and Parliament-Funkadelics to Frank Sinatra,
Steely Dan, David Sanborn, Horace Silver,
Jaco Pastorius and Frank Zappa.
Jimmy Cobb, was born in 1929. A superb,
mostly self-taught musician, Jimmy is the elder statesman of all the incredible Miles Davis
bands. Jimmy’s inspirational work with Miles,
John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly and Co.
spanned 1957 until 1963, and included the
masterpiece “Kind of Blue”, the most popular jazz recording in history. He also played
on “Sketches of Spain”, “Someday My Prince
will Come”, “Live at Carnegie Hall”, “Live at
the Blackhawk”, “Porgy and Bess”, and many,
many other watermark Miles Davis recordings.
Born in New York City on November 14, 1944,
the sought-after pianist George Cables has
performed and recorded with some of the
greatest jazz musicians of our time, including:
Art Pepper, Joe Henderson, Roy Haynes, Max
Roach, Art Blakey, Sonny Rollins, Freddie
Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Sarah Vaughn, Tony
Williams, Bobby Hutcherson and Dizzy Gillespie. He is greatly in demand for his sensitive accompaniment and has a reputation as
everyone’s favorite sideman.

Cécile McLorin-Salvant, Tochter einer Französin und eines Haitianers, wuchs in Miami,
Florida auf. Mit 5 Jahren begann sie klassisches
Piano zu studieren und mit 8 Jahren sang sie
bereits in der Miami Choral Society. 2007 zog
Cécile nach Aix-en-Provence in Frankreich,
um Jura sowie klassischen und barocken
Gesang zu studieren. Dort erlernte sie Improvisation, vertiefte ihr Intrumental- und
Gesangsrepertoire ab 1910 und sang in ihrer
ersten Band. Nach einer Konzertreihe in Paris 2009 spielte sie ihr erstes Album «Cécile»
mit Jean-François Bonnel’s Paris Quintet ein.
Ein Jahr später gewann Cécile die «Thelonious Monk competition» in Washington, D.C.
Cécile singt häufig eher unbekannte und selten aufgenommene Jazz- und Blues-Kompositionen. Sie spezialisiert sich auf theatralische Interpretationen von Jazz-Standards
und komponiert Musik und Texte sowohl
in ihrer Muttersprache Französisch als auch
in Spanisch und Englisch. Sie spielt weltweit
in Clubs, Konzerthallen und auf Festivals
und wird dabei von Top-Musikern wie JeanFrançois Bonnel, Rodney Whitaker, Aaron
Diehl, Dan Nimmer, Sadao Watanabe, Jacky
Terrasson, Archie Shepp oder Jonathan Batiste
begleitet. Cécile veröffentlichte bislang drei
CDs: «Cécile and the Jean-François Bonnel
Paris Quintet», «Woman Child», auf welcher sie von Aaron Diehl, Rodney Whitaker,
Herlin Riley und James Chirillo begleitet wird
und ihr neustes Album, «For One To Love»
auf Mack Avenue Records. Letzteres gewann
in diesem Jahr einen Grammy Award in der
Kategorie «Best Vocal Jazz Album». Nach ihrem Erfolg an den Jazzfestivals Bern 2013 und
2015 kehrt Cécile für 6 – in der Schweiz exklusive – Konzerte im Marians Jazzroom zurück!

Cécile McLorin-Salvant was born and raised
in Miami, Florida of a French mother and a
Haitian father. She started classical piano studies at 5, and began singing in the Miami Choral
Society at 8. In 2007, Cécile moved to Aix-enProvence, France, to study law as well as classical and baroque voice. It was there, that she
started learning improvisation, instrumental
and vocal repertoire ranging from the 1910s
on, and sang with her first band. In 2009, after
a series of concerts in Paris, she recorded her
first album “Cécile”, with Jean-François Bonnel’s Paris Quintet. A year later, she won the
Thelonious Monk competition in Washington
D.C. Cécile performs unique interpretations of
unknown and scarcely recorded jazz and blues
compositions. She focuses on a theatrical portrayal of the jazz standard and composes music and lyrics which she also sings in French,
her native language as well as in Spanish. She
enjoys popularity in Europe and in the United
States, performing in clubs, concert halls, and
festivals accompanied by renowned musicians
like Jean-Francois Bonnel, Rodney Whitaker,
Aaron Diehl, Dan Nimmer, Sadao Watanabe,
Jacky Terrasson, Archie Shepp, and Jonathan
Batiste. Cécile released three CDs so far: “Cécile
and the Jean-François Bonnel Paris Quintet”,
“Woman Child” with Aaron Diehl, Rodney
Whitaker, Herlin Riley and James Chirillo and
her latest release “For One To Love” on Mack
Avenue Records. The latter has won a Grammy
Award in 2016 in the category “Best Vocal Jazz
Album”. After the enthusiastic response at the
Jazzfestivals 2013 and 2015, Cécile is back for
six concerts in Marians Jazzroom, exclusive in
Switzerland!
