Die afrikanischen Wurzeln des Roots Reggae sind das Thema dieser Zusammenstellung, von und mit Tarrus
Riley, Dennis Brown, Morgan Heritage, Beres Hammond, Tony Rebel, Luciano, Buju Banton, u.v.a. Für die
nach Jamaika verschleppten und versklavten Afrikaner waren die Trommeln die wichtigste Verbindung zum
Mutterkontinent, auch noch als Anfang der 1930er Jahre die Rastafari-Bewegung entstand. Aus den beiden
afrikanischen Trommelstilen Kumina und Burru entstand das einzigartige Nyahbingi-Drumming, das durch
Count Ossie & die Folkes Brothers 1961 (und später durch Shaggy mit 'Oh Carolina' weltweit) bekannt
wurde. Die politischen Veränderungen der 60er Jahre gingen auch an Jamaika nicht spurlos vorüber und
immer mehr Reggae-Künstler begannen sich mit Afrika zu identifizieren und den schwarzen Kontinent in
ihren Texten zu besingen.
