In a nutshell
Lissabon wurde von den Phöniziern um 1000 v. Chr. gegründet und ist die älteste Stadt in Westeuropa, älter als
Rom und Paris. Lissabon ist Portugals Hauptstadt und die
grösste Stadt des Landes mit dem wichtigsten Hafen. Mit
mehreren Universitäten, Theatern und Museen gilt sie
als politisches, wirtschaftliches und kulturelles Zentrum
Portugals. Die Alfama zu Füssen des Castelo de São Jorge
ist der älteste Stadtteil. Auf dem Hügel gegenüber liegt
die Altstadt Bairro Alto, die als das Ausgehviertel gilt. Die
Baixa wurde nach dem grossen Erdbeben von 1755 neu
errichtet und bildet zusammen mit dem angrenzenden
Chiado das geschäftliche Zentrum der Stadt.
Es gibt viele Taxis, sie haben Zähler und sind günstig.
Alternativen: die moderne Metro mit vier Linien und die

Lisbon was founded by the Phoenicians around 1000 BC and
is the oldest city in western Europe, predating both Rome
and Paris. Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and the country’s
largest city with its most important port. It is the political,
economic and cultural centre of Portugal and has several
universities, theatres and museums. Alfama, at the foot of
Castelo de São Jorge, is the oldest part of the city. On the hill
opposite lies the Bairro Alto Old-Town area, which is the
city’s main entertainment quarter. Baixa was rebuilt following the great earthquake of 1755 and is today the city’s business district along with neighbouring Chiado.
There are plenty of taxis, which have meters and are reasonably priced. Alternatives are the modern metro system
with its four lines and the old-fashioned trams.

daytime temperatures usually
drop no lower than 11 °C.

Admittedly, this pleasant
restaurant in the Bairro Alto is
small, cramped, noisy and always packed to bursting. The
simple dishes it serves, however,
are delicious: bean soup, grilled
sea bass and roast lamb, followed by a crème caramel and a
bill that won’t put a dent in the
wallet. Tourists dine here in the
early evening, but after nine
o’clock a queue of locals forms
outside waiting for tables.

Monastery of the
Hieronymites and Tower
of Belém in Lisbon
