NEWELL PRIZE A $100 cash award for the best student essay on a topic in children's folklore will be awarded. The paper must have been written by an undergraduate or graduate student within the 1985-I986 academic year. Papers published by students within the same time frame are also eligible.Students may submit their own papers; instructors are asked to encourage students with eligiblepapers to enter the competition. Papers must be typed, double-spaced, on white bond paper. On the first page include the author's name, academic address, home address, and telephone number. The winner willreceivea $100award at the annual meetingof the American Folklore Society in Baltimore, Maryland in October, 1986.The winningpaper does not haveto be read at the meeting but entrants are encouraged to submit abstracts of their papers to the AFS Program Committee. If the winningpaper is read at the meeting it will be identified as the winner of the Newell Prize. Deadline for submissions is July I, 1986. The Children's Popular Culture Caucus of PCA will organize a series of sessions at that event. Presentations are welcomed on various aspects of children's popular culture: toys, games, television, movies, comics, radio, clothing, folklore, languages, and literature. Papers on Maurice Sendak, psychocultural criticism of children's literature, and the role of the adult in children's culture are especially sought for this meeting. PCA encourages interdisciplinary approaches and the use of visual media in its presentation, which should be 15to 20 minutes long. Deadline for paper or 200-word abstract is September I, 1986.
