Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren
Mesdames, Messieurs,
Manchmal werden wir Zeugen von Ereignissen, die den Lauf der Geschichte verändern,
deren Dimension wir jedoch erst in der Zukunft erkennen können. Die Aufstände in der
arabischen Welt gehören zu diesen historischen Wendepunkten.
Der Umbruch in der arabischen Welt verändert das Weltgeschehen. Mit viel Mut lehnen sich junge Menschen, Frauen, Intellektuelle und die Zivilgesellschaft gegen Diktaturen
auf und fordern Menschenwürde, Freiheit und
Zukunftsperspektiven. Allzu lang hat die Staatengemeinschaft die Logik der Stabilität durch
die Diktaturen der Region akzeptiert und das
Leid und die rechtmässigen Forderungen der
Bevölkerungen ignoriert.
Aufgrund dieser Umbrüche können wir
Lehren ziehen, die Debatte über Rechtsstaatlichkeit, Demokratie, arabische und islamische
Welt neu lancieren, gemeinsam neue Partnerschaften bilden und im Interesse aller in dieser
Weltregion zu mehr Wohlstand beitragen. Wir
können aber auch viel teilen: Werte, Schicksale und gemeinsame Interessen.
Wir haben junge Menschen sowie verschiedene Persönlichkeiten aus der arabischen Welt
und aus Europa eingeladen, um über die anstehenden Herausforderungen zu diskutieren.
Es würde mich freuen, Sie am 18. Oktober im
Stade de Suisse in Bern begrüssen zu dürfen.
Il nous arrive d’être témoins d’événements qui
modifient le cours de l’histoire, mais dont seul
l’avenir nous permettra d’appréhender toute
l’ampleur. Les soulèvements dans le monde
arabe en sont une illustration.
En changeant, le monde arabe est en train
de changer le monde. Avec un courage impressionnant, les jeunes, les femmes, les intellectuels, la société civile se soulèvent face aux
dictatures et exigent dignité, liberté et perspectives d’avenir. Trop longtemps, le monde
a accepté que la stabilité de la région repose
sur des dictatures, en ignorant largement les
souffrances et les demandes légitimes des
populations.
Nous avons beaucoup à apprendre des
bouleversements en cours. Tirer les leçons
du passé, fonder de nouveaux rapports entre
Etat de droit, démocratie, monde arabe et islam, construire ensemble un nouveau partenariat, faire prospérer la région dans l’intérêt
de tous. Nous avons aussi beaucoup à partager et à promouvoir : des valeurs, des destins,
des intérêts communs.
Aussi avons-nous invité des jeunes, des
­personnalités, des acteurs de la région et de
l’Europe pour débattre de ces enjeux majeurs.
Ce serait un plaisir pour moi de vous accueillir au Stade de Suisse à Berne le 18 octobre prochain.

Dear Madam, Dear Sir,
A volte siamo testimoni di eventi che modificano il corso della storia, ma di cui riconosciamo la portata solo più tardi. Le rivolte nel
mondo arabo fanno parte di queste svolte
storiche.
Cambiando sé stesso, il mondo arabo sta
cambiando il resto del mondo. Con un coraggio impressionante, i giovani, le donne, gli intellettuali, la società civile si sollevano contro
le dittature ed esigono dignità, libertà e prospettive per il futuro. Il mondo ha accettato
troppo a lungo la logica della stabilità della regione per mezzo di dittature, ignorando ampiamente le sofferenze e le richieste legittime
delle popolazioni.
Abbiamo molto da comparare dai capovolgimenti in corso. Trarre lezioni dal passato, creare nuovi rapporti tra Stato di diritto,
­democrazia, mondo arabo e islam, costruire
insieme un nuovo partenariato e far prosperare la regione nell’interesse di tutti. Abbiamo
anche molto da condividere e promuovere:
­valori, destini, interessi comuni.
Sono stati invitati giovani, personalità, attori
della regione e dell’Europa per discutere di
queste sfide importanti.
Mi farebbe piacere accogliervi il 18 ottobre
allo Stade de Suisse a Berna.
There are times when we witness events that
change the course of history but whose importance will only emerge in the future. The
uprisings that have recently occurred in the
Arab world belong in this category of historic
­t urning points.
The changes in the Arab world are changing the rest of the world too. With impressive
courage, young people, women, intellectuals
and civil society are rising up against dictatorships and demanding dignity, freedom and
prospects for the future. For too long the world
has accepted a rule by which stability in the
­region is ensured by dictatorships and it has
ignored the sufferings and the legitimate aspirations of the people in these countries.
We can learn a great deal from the upheavals that are now occurring. We can draw
­lessons from past mistakes, establishing new
relationships between the rule of law, the Arab
world and Islam. We can create a new partnership together and help to bring prosperity to
the region in the interest of everyone. There
are also many things that we can share: values, destinies, common interests.
We have incited young people, prominent
people, actors from the region and from Europe to debate these major issues.
I would be delighted to welcome you in the
Stade de Suisse on 18 October.

Six young actors
Acclaimed Egyptian writer and psychiatrist,
author of more than forty books which have
been translated in over thirty languages.
Dr. El Saadawi has been a pioneering activist for human dignity and women’s rights in
Egypt and beyond. Her books, among them
“Women and Sex” (1969), have been repeatedly banned. She has been Director General
for Health Education in the Egyptian Ministry
of Health (1966–1972), Secretary General of
the Egyptian Medical Association (1968–1972),
founder and president of the Arab Women’s
Solidarity Association (since 1982), and has
been awarded honorary distinctions from numerous European and American universities. Famously, she has written her memoirs in
prison, on a roll of toilet paper with an eyebrow
pencil smuggled in by a young woman in the
prostitutes’ ward. Her novels and her books on
the situation of women have had a deep effect
on successive generations of young women
and men over the last five decades.
It is young women and men, who are the core
actors behind the uprisings in the Arab world.
What do they hope to obtain? Why have they
mobilized? What are their plans, their demands? How do they organize themselves?
Six young people from Bahrain, Egypt, Libya,
Syria, Tunisia, and Yemen will speak about
their hopes, fears, and dreams.
In parallel to the Conference of 18 October,
they will be meeting with youth associations
from political parties, high school students, and
members of human rights organizations in Bern
on 17 October, and in Geneva on 19 October
2011.
A public information meeting will be held with
the 6 young activists on Wednesday, 19 October at 8.00 pm, in Maison des Associations, Rue des Savoises 15 (salle Mahatma
Gandhi), Geneva.
