John Todd, a fiddler, of Newport Pagnell, "who used at trysts and
fairs to driddle," was charged by Elizabeth Robinson, servant at the
Black Horse, with robbing the till of that establishment. It appears
that while the girl was gone down in the cellar to draw some beer
for the prisoner, the latter stepped round and took the money;
nobody else was in the house. Four sixpences and a shilling were
found on the prisoner, corresponding exactly with the money from
the till. Prisoner asserted his innocence, but he was committed for
trial.
JOHN TODD was charged with stealing 3s the property of Thomas
Smith...Charles Smith searched the prisoner, and found four
sixpences, one shilling, and two pennyworth of half
pence...Prisoner said he had earned the money fiddling. Mr.
Rogers, of the Grafton Arms, knew the prisoner for three years at
Stony Stratford, and gave him a good character. Guilty, with a
recommendation to mercy. One Month's Hard Labour.
John Todd, a tramp, was charged with indecently assaulting Mrs.
Lord, Globe Inn. Pleaded guilty. Fourteen days.

Edward Butler and Richard Butler, both of Bampton, were charged
by Jesse Warner, of the same place, a labourer in the employ of
the Surveyors of the Turnpike Road there, with rescuing, on the
21st ult., a horse belonging to the first-named defendant, which
had been lawfully seized by Warner, it being found lying and
straying on the said road. The defendants were convicted and
ordered to be imprisoned for ten days, but as Mr. Bullen, on behalf
of the Trustees of the Turnpike Road, said he would not then press
for a warrant of commitment, it was not issued, and consequently
the defendants were discharged.
Jesse Warner, the complainant in the above case, was charged
by Edward Butler, one of the defendants in the same case, with
assaulting him. The assault was alleged to have taken place at the
time that the horse was released. Mr. Bullen appeared for the
defendant, who was fined, including costs, 29s. 6d.

John Clack and Edward Butler, of Bampton, confectioners, Matilda
Mullett, of London, wax-work exhibitor, Rd. Jones, of Chester, and
William Wilson, of Canterbury, rifle shooting gallery owners, were
charged with obstructing the thoroughfare at Buckland, by placing
stalls, shows, &c., thereon. - The defendants attended the village
feast, and were informed by the police not to remain after Monday;
they, however, remained until Tuesday. - Fined £1 each, including
costs, except Mrs. Mullett, the summonses against her being
withdrawn.
The morris dancers were busily engaged from house to house in
their accustomed fashion, with leg bells, handkerchiefs, &c.
...the morris dancers busily tripped the "light fantastic toe" to the
sound of fiddle and tambourine.
Edwin Butler, proprietor of a dancing booth, was summoned by
George Palmer, district road Surveyor, charged with doing 1s.
damage to the High-street, Shipston. It appeared from the
evidence that the defendant visited Shipston fair, and made holes
in the street for the purposes of erecting a dancing booth. He
denied having done any damage, and called as a witness Fred.
Cooper, toll collector at the fair, who considered that the street was
not damaged, as the defendant left it in as good a state as he
found it. The Bench fined him 12s., including costs. Defendant said
that he would seek redress in the County Court.
This annual event came off on Sunday and Monday last. The
visitors, owing, no doubt, to the unfavourable state of the weather,
were not so numerous on Sunday as is generally the case. On
Monday the fair was well patronized, some of the vendors seeming
to do a roaring trade. There was a shooting saloon (Forrests'), a
travelling bazaar, some toy stalls, cake stalls, and a dancing booth
(Butler's), &c., &c. The feast has passed off quietly with the
exception of a few cases of inebriety.
Edward Butler, dealer, of Bampton, was summoned for pitching a
dancing booth on the highway at Cassington, on the 4th inst., and
was fined 9s. 6d. and 10s. costs; paid.
The first of the Witney hiring fairs was held on Thursday last, when
there was a large attendance of farmers and farm servants...There
was the usual collection of stalls, swings, and roundabouts, the
latter including Wilson's "galloping horses," and visitors who were
fond of a step had the opportunity given them in the well-known
Butler's dancing booth, and also at the Plough Inn, where dancing
was indulged in till closing time.

WEST CANNOCK COAL COMPANY v. BUTLER. - This was an
interpleader case, the plaintiffs having issued an execution against
Edward Bond [sic - Butler], of Bampton, but the claimant in this
case stated that the goods belonged to him and not his father. Mr.
T.W. Mallam appeared for the plaintiffs, and Mr. Rigden for the
claimant. - Richard Butler stated that he lived with his father,
Edward Butler, and that the goods sold under the execution

belonged to him, and not his father. Two horses were sold which
belonged to him and other things. He claimed 5l. and 3l. for delay
of horses, and 2l. for goods sold, which he had to buy again at a
disadvantage. - In cross-examination defendant said he lived with
his father, and did hauling for him, for which he was not paid. He
did not buy the things mentioned for his father ; they belonged to
him. - Walter Midwinter deposed to the claimant buying a horse
from him, for which he received the money. Verdict for claimant,
without costs.

Edm. Warman, of Brize-Norton, was charged with causing a
nuisance and obstruction at Steeple Aston, by erecting a large
booth by the side of the highway. It appeared that defendant is in
the habit of attending fairs and feasts, and amongst others Steeple
Aston feast, and erecting a large booth, in which dancing and
music are indulged in, and which, when lighted up, is dangerous,
and a great annoyance to any one travelling by. - Defendant said
he thought he had taken care to set it sufficiently away from the
road, that it was the only means he had of obtaining a living, and
hoped the Bench would be merciful. - Fine 5s., costs 8s.

Edmund Warman, of Fritwell, was charged by Serjeant Wharton,
with having, on the 15th inst., allowed two horses to stray on the
highway leading from Fritwell to Somerton; he was convicted and
fined 5s., with costs 10s., and police 4s. ; paid.
Edmund Warman, of Fritwell, was summoned by P.S. John
Wharton, charged with allowing two horses to stray on the highway
leading from Fritwell to Somerton, on the 15th of August, without a
keeper.
P.S. Wharton deposed - On Thursday, the 15th of August, I saw
two horses belonging to the defendant straying on the highway at
Fritwell, and I went and told Warman where I had found the horses.
I have cautioned him before.
By the Bench - The road at that particular spot is pretty wide, and
there is grass growing on each side of the road. Mr. Watson's
house is about half-a-mile from where the horses were. No one
was with the horses. Defendant's van was about twenty yards from
the horses, and there were two boys in the van. The van was in Mr.
Whatson's field. Warman was inside it.
The defendant said that it was raining very hard almost all day on
Thursday, and that the boys would have been with the horses had
it not been for the very wet weather.
The police sergeant stated that he had on a previous occasion
seen the horses on the road, and then the boys were at a distance
of 100 yards from them. The horses had halters about their necks.
When I went to defendant's van and told him his horses were on
the road, he told one of his boys to go and fetch them in. It rained
very heavily at times on Thursday. The horses were grazing on the
side of the road. The width of the grass on the side of the road is
about four or five yards, or it might be more. It was in Fritwell
parish, between Fritwell and Somerton.
In defence, Warman said that, although a hedge separated the
spot where the horses were feeding and where his van was, he
could hear them grazing. Mr. Watson had, on many previous
occasions, given him leave to graze his horses there. Mr. Watson
had been there about three hours before the police sergeant came
to him, and he had given him permission to graze his horses on the
road.
After some deliberation the magistrates informed Warman that it
had been clearly proved the horses were straying without a keeper.
He had been convicted in that court of two former offences of the
same description. If the rain came on so that the boys were unable
to remain out of doors he ought to have taken his horses in. He
would be fined 5s, costs 10s, and police 4s, or in default 14 days in
prison.
The money was paid.
Edmund Warman, of Fritwell, was charged with having allowed his
horse to stray on the highway leading to Somerton, in the parish of
Ardley, on the 5th inst. ; fined 5s. and 11s. 6d. costs.
Edmund Warman, of Fritwell, was charged with allowing a horse to
stray on the highway in the parish of Ardley on the 5th of February.
P.C. Wharton found the horse straying on the road from Ardley to
Somerton, a lad who should have been in charge of the animal
being some fifty yards up another road. He had cautioned the
defendant several times; had pounded the animal on four
occasions when he had found it on the turnpike road, and had
summoned the owner on a previous occasion.
Fine 5s, costs 7s 6d, and police 4s, or fourteen days'
imprisonment. The cash was paid.
Edward Warman, of Fritwell, was charged by P.C. John Wharton
with having on the 3rd of March last allowed a horse to stray on the
highway in the parish of Ardley, leading to the village of Somerton.
Fined 5s. and costs 15s.
Edward Warman, of Fritwell, dancing booth proprietor, was
summoned for allowing his horse to stray on the highway at Ardley,
on the 3rd of March.- Warman did not appear and P.S. Wharton
proved the service of the summons. He then deposed to seeing the
horse in the charge of a boy in the parish of Ardley on the day in
question, and told the boy to keep by it. Later in the day he saw the
horse straying and the boy fifty yards away. The prosecution had
been delayed as he had not been able to serve the summons. There were three convictions for similar offences against the
accused, who was now convicted in fine and costs 18s, or fourteen
days' imprisonment.
Edward Warman, of Fritwell, was charged with having allowed his
horse to stray on the highway between Fritwell and Middleton, on
the 17th of May. This is the fifth similar offence for which defendant
has been convicted ; he was fined 5s. and 15s. costs.
Edward Warman, dancing booth proprietor, Fritwell, was
summoned for allowing a horse to stray on the public highway, at
Somerton, on the 17th May. Defendant did not put in an
appearance. The service of the summons was proved, and the
case was heard in his absence. Mr. Godwin of Troy Farm, proved
the offence. This was it appeared Warman's fifth offence. He was
fined to the full extent the law allowed 5s. costs 11s, police 4s, or
fourteen days' imprisonment. Superintendent Moulden said all they
could do when they found on the turnpike-road [sic], would be to
impound the horse, which they had done times out of number.
Edmund Warman, of Fritwell, dealer, who has frequently been
before the Bench on a similar charge, was summoned for having
allowed his horse to stray on the highway leading from Fritwell to
Middleton Stoney. - Fined, costs included, £1 8s. 6d., or a distress
warrant to issue.
Edward Warman, dancing booth proprietor, Fritwell, who was
summoned before the bench on the 27th ult., but who then, as
now, did not put in an appearance, was summoned for allowing a
horse to stray on the public highway, on the 16th of June, in the
parish of Ardley...When summoned before the Bench it appears to
be a standing rule of Warman's not to appear, and when served
with a copy of the amount he has to pay, he pays it, and so stops
anything further being done in the matter. The law does not allow
the magistrates to fine more than 5s for these offences, and they

On Tuesday was laid to rest an old and respected inhabitant, Mr.
John Barrett, sen., who died on Friday last at the age of 81. he was
a noted village musician and bell-ringer, and had been a member

Thomas Taylor, a labourer, of Ilmington, surrendered himself into
the custody of Superintendent Thompson, on a charge of having
on the 30th day of August last, at the parish of Halford, violently
assaulted two men named James Arthur and William Hall. Supt.
Thompson asked for the prisoner to be remanded until the next
Petty Sessions to enable him to communicate with complainants
who lived at a distance, (the prisoner has absconded since August
last). Remanded till the next Petty Sessions.

About six o'clock the Ilmington morris dancers arrived on the fete
ground according to appointment and made a "great hit" by going
through the following dances in a very stylish and unique manner "Cuckoo's nest," "Constant Billy," "Abraham Brown," "Maid of the
Mill," "Old woman," "Shepherd's Hay," "Six and Clasp," "Saturday
night," "Cross legged capered out," "Black Joke," "The
Warwickshire lads," and the "Ilmington High Jinks." The trainer was
Joseph Johnson; captain, Michael Johnson; fife and tabor, James
Arthur; fool, T. Boker. The Ilmington Morris Dancers are a very
clever and proficient troupe of performers, and their entertainment
gave great satisfaction.

At July 29th our Annual Sunday School Treat took place. In former
years, the expenses were wholly defrayed by the Rector, but this
year, in deference to the wishes of certain members of the
congregation they were borne by the Rector and Parishioners. The
presence of the little children of the workhouse Union formed a
new feature in the proceedings and they thoroughly appreciated
the kindness. The children first sat round for a substantial tea in the
Rectory grounds. Sturch and son meanwhile discoursing merrily on
the violin.
This place celebrated the Jubilee on June 21st. The proceedings
were opened by service at the parish church, a procession to which
was formed, headed by Sturch's string band.

Bladon, OXF
James Bennett, sawyer, Eynsham, on bail, was charged with being
concerned with two others in feloniously beating Joseph Keys, of
that place, and robbing him of a violin and violin bow in a certain
highway in the parish of Bladon on the 6th of April. After hearing
the evidence of the prosecutor, and also of P.C. Henry Shattock,
and Abram Buckland, the prisoner made a somewhat long
statement in his defence, and the Bench, after a short consultation,
decided to dismiss the case, at the same time cautioning the
prisoner as to his future conduct.
