Network News
The following items were discussed at the latest
neighbourhood management board (NMB) meetings.
Consultations were started at the carnival and to date
over 200 questionnaires have been completed. Most
respondents have agreed with the current priorities.
Most concern has been raised around a small group of
adolescents who are engaging in ASB in Bendbow Rise,
others have highlighted a request for benefits advice.
Positive feedback has been received from the general
public, stall holders and Fullhurst Community College.
This year saw a fantastic 3,000 people visit Braunstone
Carnival. The total cost to host the carnival was just over
£5,000, however 3 grants were received from the City
Council Events Team, Ward Councillors and the
Residents’ Network, each donated £1,000, therefore
the cost to the Foundation was just £2,000.
Eileen updated the board - The ResNet received a
certificate of thanks for the ‘Make Mollie Move’ event.
The carnival shuttle bus received positive feedback from
the people who made use of the service, however, better
advertising of the bus route with a time-table have been
recommended for the shuttle bus next year.
Planning permission is expected to take six months to
complete and local people will be invited to attend a
review of the plans in the near future.
There is £12,000 of funds left for the remainder of the
year and the NMB members were asked to advise
groups who are in need to apply as soon as possible.
b-connected is co-ordinating a benefits advice steering
group. The group meet monthly in order to bring
together a number of relevant local service providers to
offer benefit information and signposting in a coordinated way. This will likely be in the form of a leaflet.
b-connected is hosting an afternoon tea event at The
Winstanley Centre on September 13th. The theme will
be around health and well being for older adults.
Hockley Farm Patient participation Group (PPG) is
holding an open fun day on October 5th around the
theme of Respiratory Awareness.
he Residents’ Network have been really busy
of late, helping b-connected host this years’
summer events ‘Braunstone on the Beach’ parts
one and two.
The Residents’ Network donated £150 to support
the volunteers in delivering an event as part of their
Community Volunteering Qualification Courses,
levels 1 and 2. Both events were highly successful,
with over 200 people at each with great feedback
from those that came. Lucy said, ‘My 7-year old has
had so much fun that he doesn’t want to go home.
Excellent staff and organisation - 10/10’.
Eileen, of the Resnet told us, ‘We in the Resnet are
always keen to support these events, its great to see
how much the kids get out of it and the parents too!’
When asked what’s next, the Resnet said, ‘We’re
putting on a 1940’s night with the theme of VE Day.
Half the proceeds will go towards ‘Help for Heroes`
and a local campaign we are supporting called
‘Charlie says (please help me walk)’. This will be on
the 29th of November, to be held at the West End
Working Men’s Club, Braunstone Avenue. Come
along, have fun, meet the Resnet, make new friends
and support your community!’
The Resnet would like to put out a call to the
community, we are looking for volunteers to join the
committee, help out at events and to keep
Braunstone moving forward. If you are interested
call on the number above or email [email protected].
T
ike Keen was handpicked for the job of
managing
the
Braunstone
Adventure
playground and has done so with passion and
commitment for over 30 years. His vision and hard
work built the playground up to where it is today and
he is sadly missed by all at the Adventure
playground. All at b-inspired, b-connected and the
Braunstone Residents’ Network offer their sincere
condolences to Mike’s family and friends at this sad
time.

Winstanleys come home
raunstone History Group are to hold several more
open days at The Braunstone Park Stable Block
and Walled Garden Museum over the next
couple of months. We at the Alert caught up with Helen
Catterwell, the group's chair, to find out more about the
theme and what items will be put on display.
Helen
said,
'The
exhibition is going to be
about
where
the
Winstanleys came from
and where they lived
once they were in
Braunstone.'
She explained to us that
the Braunstone History Group , over the last few months,
has seen their collection of Winstanley memorabilia
increase dramatically, all thanks to Andy Poore, the son
of the late Rosemary Winstanley. The books, photo
albums and letters he has kindly given have enabled the
History Group to trace the Winstanley family tree back
to the 1700's. Helen told us, 'He feels the items belong
in Braunstone. I believe that would have been
Rosemary’s wish'.
The History Group will be exhibiting the items from this
collection on the following Tuesday mornings between
10 am - 12 pm: September 24th, October 29th, and
November 26th. So come on down, view this fantastic
Winstanley collection and learn more about
Braunstone's exciting history over a cuppa, with local
historians.
B
A Winstanley who’s dunnit ?
e met with local
historian Michael
Robinson, a
member of the Braunstone
History Group. He is writing
a Biographical hypothesis
surrounding the mysterious
death of the Lord of the Manor - James Beaumount
Winstanley. Michael has spent the last year
researching his idea and has finally taken pen to
paper. Michael says, ‘This is not a boring history book,
but reads like an Agatha Christie novel, with lots of
twist and turns, clues that will leave the reader in no
doubt when they reach the end’. The title of the book
couldn't be more fitting: ‘A Victorian mystery solved?
Or a mystery of contradictions’. The Alert team would
like to wish Michael all the best with his book.
W
ate Hunter, the Practice Manager from Hockley
Farm Medical Practice has given the Alert a few
important pieces of information.
Kate told us, ‘We will be starting our flu vaccination
clinics in October and will start booking patients in
from September. If you are over 65, are pregnant or
have an underlying health condition such as diabetes,
asthma or COPD, please get in touch with us from mid
September onwards to book you an appointment’.
Another piece of good news from Kate was about the
new GPs starting with the practice in August. Kate said,
‘We are delighted that we have four new doctors, they
are: Dr A Milne, Dr F Fatima, Dr N Fernando, and Dr
F Anjum’. Kate added, ‘We will have a further two
starting in October: Dr S Butt and Dr R Knox’.

ver the years Braunstone Hall has
gained a reputation to be known for
being haunted by members of the
Winstanley family and others. There have been
several investigations by mediums and tour
groups, trying to capture glimpses of an
apparition. There have been many recorded
sightings in and around the hall and grounds.
Sightings such as a white lady, a coach being
pulled by black
horses, several
beloved pets
and ex-workers.
O
After speaking
to several
residents that
have ventured
past the hall, we have been told of a young girl
called Mary Ellen who sits on the branches of
the 70ft cedar tree crying. A council worker at
the stables reports hearing loads of banging
and doors slamming yet he’s the only one
there. One resident spoke of how her relative’s
friend, being possessed by the dog “no no” she
said that she got down on her hands and knees
and started barking.
The 4c’s Cafe are getting into

Autumn
ur attention has been caught by Tina &

start October 1st 2013.
There will be 3 different age groups: from 3 - 5
years, 6 - 8 years and 9-11 years. There will be
a prize for the winner of each group, to be
chosen by the new headmaster Mr Allcock.

or Mary for your
entry form. The cafe

4.30pm Monday to
Friday (term time

O
Braunstone Foodshare dates
An ex pupil of Braunstone Hall Junior School
said that a ghost would play practical jokes on
students by opening cupboards, pulling girl’s
ponytails and pinching the back of necks. There
were also areas in the school that pupils and
staff dared not go into, the music room and the
back of the stairs near the cellar.
On the 5th of July we went on our very own
ghost hunt to see if we could spot any of these
apparitions. Although none of us saw anything,
one of us had a strong feeling of being sick
and when looking at the photo evidence there
was an image captured on two different
cameras in that same spot… To be continued.

Foodshare
would like to say
a huge thank you
to ASDA and its
customers, who
kindly donated
over one weekend
£400 worth of food to the Braunstone Foodshare
scheme. Tracey Spears of b-connected said, ‘We were
over whelmed by the amount of food we collected.
One lady gave us four bags full of food and lots of
people gave us a carrier bag full. Thank you so much
to every one who supported the Braunstone Foodshare
at the weekend’.
The Foodshare scheme in Braunstone has been
running for over a year and a half. It first started at St
Peter’s Church and has grown to include two more
venues, the BRITE Centre and the United Reform
Church. There is a need for more volunteers to take
on tasks like transporting the food and helping to get
venues set up on the day of operation.
If you would like to become one of the Braunstone
Foodshare team contact Tracey on

B
&T Performing Arts is well-known locally for their
successful dance and theatre classes, but we’ve
been hearing about Armchair Aerobics for the
older members of the community and wanted to find
out more. So we went in search of Ruth, her daughter
Beth and grand-daughter Georgina who run the
classes down at the Winstanley Centre.
Ruth tells us that it’s
not just about the
exercise. She feels
that getting people
together is just as
important, ‘People
arrive about 12
noon, have a cup of
tea and a chat.
Aerobics usually takes place between 1 and 1.30 then
they have a chat and finish about 2’.
We met some stalwarts of the class; Mick and Sherry
Braimbridge have both been coming for 7 months.
They joined the class together hoping to improve their
health, fitness and to lose a bit of weight, but they have
found that they have gained in other ways! They really
enjoy the social side of coming to the centre and say
it’s great fun!
So if you are an older adult looking for a fun, but
gentle, way to exercise and meet people please come
and join them at the Winstanley Centre, off Blackmore
Drive, every Thursday from 12 noon to 2 pm. For a
taster, Ruth will be running an Armchair Aerobics
session for us at our ‘Make-Do & Mend’ Event on
September 13th between 1.30 – 4.30 pm, also at the
Winstanley Centre.

K
ocal firm Samworth Brothers, based at the Meridian Business Park,
kindly supported a b-connected scheme this summer through their
Bradgate Bakery by providing sandwiches, crisps and drinks.
The weekly pack-up scheme was delivered to kids at three venues in the
area - The BRITE centre, Sure Start and the Adventure Playground.
Additional lunch-box items were donated by the Braunstone Residents’
Network. b-inspired’s Chief Officer Angie Wright, along with
b-connected’s Neighbourhood Support Worker Tracey Spears, went
along to collect the sandwiches and to hand over a ‘Thank-You’ card from all the staff and children involved.
Angie Wright told us, ‘It has been a really heart warming gesture by this big, but local, company who could
see the need and really stepped in to help. It has been so successful and much appreciated and we hope to
continue this important relationship in the future’.

Stoptober Event 2013
Can you stop for 28 days?
My name is Syd Mathias and I’m
a stop smoking advisor with the
Leicestershire Partnership NHS
Trust.
I hold a clinic at the BRITE Centre on
Tuesdays, some of you may know me
from there, and I have been in the Alert
a few times. This is an update about an
exciting event to be
held during October
and
it's
called
Stoptober, where
we ask smokers to give
Stop Smoking a go
for 28 days. You will
get lots of help,
support and, if needed,
medications to do this.
At the end of the 28 days you choose if
you wish to remain a non smoker or
return to smoking. Last year the
Stoptober event in England
generated over 250,000 registrations
to stop smoking for 28 days.
Syd Mathias, STOP!
I started smoking 30 years ago, I first tried
to give up smoking last year and I managed
to stop for 4 and a half months, but due to
personal circumstances I started smoking again.
A friend told me about the
Stop Smoking program
run by Syd at the BRITE
Centre, and I decide to go
along
and
make
an
appointment. Thanks to
Syd’s support and advice I
managed to give up
smoking on March 13th (No
Smoking Day) and I have
not looked back since. I
now feel great, and positive
that I have finally given up. I feel so much
better, I have a lot more energy and have
managed to save £630 since giving up smoking.
I would recommend that anyone who wants to
stop smoking sees Syd at the BRITE Centre
and takes part in the Stop Smoking
campaign
Marion
If you want to use STOP! then
see Syd at the BRITE Centre
Wednesdays 10 am - 5 pm
or call 0116 295 4141
I’m 52 years old and I
smoked for 34 years, I
used to smoke 60
cigarettes a day. I wanted
to stop to improve my
cycling and
thanks to
Syd’s
help
I
have
managed to stop.
I first met Syd through my
job at the BRITE Centre, I
spoke to him about how I
was
trying
to
stop
smoking.
Syd suggested using Nicorette lozenges as a
method to quit smoking, and within 3 months
I had managed to stop.
The advice and support that I received from Syd
through the Stop Smoking programme
has been amazing and I will never smoke
again.

As we’re all feeling the crunch and having to tighten our belts, we at the Alert felt that we
could all do with some money-saving ideas for you to have some fun with.
Macaroni Cheese
8 oz macaroni
¼ cup of low fat margarine
¼ cup of flour
¼ teaspoon of salt & pepper
2 cups of milk
2 cups of cheddar cheese, grated
Cook the macaroni per the instructions on the pack. In a
medium saucepan, melt the margarine over a low heat, stir
in the flour, salt & pepper, slowly add the milk. Continue to
stir until the mixture starts to bubble and then stir in the
cheese. Drain the macaroni, and add to the cheese sauce.
Serve hot with some nice crusty bread.
When I’m cleaning
windows
When cleaning your windows, instead of
using an expensive brand of window cleaner,
why not use vinegar and newspaper as a
cheaper alternative?
Just dilute some vinegar with water in a bowl
and, using a cloth, apply the liquid to your
windows as you would do normally. Wipe
away any residue with old newspaper. You
will certainty notice the difference it makes to
your windows!

Dear Alert Readers,
The best part of living in Braunstone is.... when
we have holidays from school, and there is
nothing to do, b-connected and the Braunstone
Residents’ Network will put on events such as the
Easter event and the Braunstone at the Beach
events. During the Easter holidays an event was
held at Summer’s Cafe, there were lots of craft
activities including Easter bonnet making, a lucky
dip, an Easter egg hunt and a colouring
competition. We all had lots of fun and it was a
great day, just like the more recent event
Braunstone on the Beach. There was a slush
machine, candy floss machine and popcorn
along with money off tokens which came in very
handy! There was a sand pit and water play,
bouncy castle and a craft table where we made
grass skirts and coloured in pictures. I personally
think that all the staff and volunteers who put on
these events are very kind and caring and put in
a lot of effort to ensure that local residents have a
great time. I hope that they continue holding
amazing events.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!
Dear Alert,
Stephanie Pryor would like to
announce that she is engaged
to be married to Michael
Fletcher of Loughborough on
April 26th 2014 at St Peter’s
Church, Woodshawe Rise.
On Thursday 25th July a team of volunteers and
staff from b-connected put on a summer community
event, ‘Braunstone on the Beach’, this was hosted,
enthusiastically, by the Summers Café at the Cort
Crescent Community centre. We would like to thank
Braunstone Residents’ Network and the Local
Housing Office who provided the funding to enable
us to buy the `beach’ and put on other seasidethemed activities. The weather was kind to us and
for a few hours there was a seaside resort on Cort
Crescent!
We’d also like to say `thank you’ to everyone who
attended on the day, building sand castles, making
grass skirts, eating candy floss and generally
creating that real beach feel in Braunstone.
