was proud to present a Youth of the Year finalist from the same
Boys & Girls Club he was a member of as a teen. During the
week, Eady also had personal visits with Senator Mark Pryor
and Senator Blanche Lincoln.
Alyse Eady was named the 2006 Jeffrey Boys & Girls
Club Youth of the Year in March. She won the state contest
in April and the Southwest regional contest in July. The 5

College Scholarship
Established at Club
Golf Charity Support - Rheem Classic director, Lisa Baker (middle),
makes a presentation of $16,666 to Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club
representatives, Jason Morland (left) and Jerry Glidewell.
RHEEM CLASSIC PRESENTS
FSBGC WITH GENEROUS GIFT
Twenty-three local charities were awarded checks from
the Rheem Classic Golf Tournament during a ceremony held
August 25. Included in the presentation held at Hardscrabble
Country Club, was Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club, who
received a check for $16,666 from the annual event. This
is the 9th consecutive year that the Fort Smith Boys & Girls
Club has been awarded funding from the annual professional
Golf tournament.
According to Rheem Classic director Lisa Baker, a record
$200,000 was distributed among the charities this year. The
Nationwide PGA. This is double the amount of charitable
dollars given compared to when the tour first started in Fort
Smith. The tour event is looking for a title sponsor for the
2007. Rheem has been the title sponsor for past 4 years.
The winner of the 2006 tour event was PGA pro Darron
Stiles, who defeated Michael Putnam in a playoff round. The
two had a tie score of 267 after four complete rounds of play.
Stiles took home the winning purse of $90,000, while Putnam
received $54,000. Former Razorback golfer Deane Pappas
finished third.
Several FSBGC volunteers and staff were involved with
working at this yearʼs Rheem Golf Classic. The tournament is
considered by many as the “minor Leagues of the PGA” where
young professionals gain experience in order to advance to the
major tour level.
Former Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club member
Wade Walker has announced the formation of
the new “Walker-Liggett” College Scholarship
at the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club. Walker, a
successful architect in Kansas City, established
the annual gift in memory of his long-time family
friend Jack Liggett.
Jack Liggett died on June 6, 2006. Travis
and Charlie Liggett are the grandsons of Mr.
Liggett. Travis and Charlie coach the Coca-cola
American Legion team during the summer at
the Boys & Girls Club. Wade Walker was an
outstanding volunteer baseball coach at the Club
when he was a teen.
Wade Pressley and J.P. Sonnier were selected
to receive the Walker-Liggett Scholarship for the
2006-2007 school year. Pressley attends Arkansas
Tech and Sonnier is a transfer student from Pratt
College to UA Fort Smith.
Providing College Scholarships to Club
members has been an important part of the Fort
Smith Boys & Girls Club programming for the
past 21 years. In 1985, FSBGC board member Jim
Alexander and his wife June, created the program.
Since that time, 409 awards have been granted.
189 individual club members have received
scholarships from the program.
Applicants for the FSBGC College
Scholarship program must have participated
at the Club as a member or volunteer for a
minimum of two years. Academic excellence,
Boys & Girls Club participation and need
are key ingredients that committee judges
consider when making scholarship selections.
The FSBGC Scholarship committee conducts
interviews with all new applicants.
Scholarship applications become available
in January each year. Deadline for submission is
April 30. For more information concerning the
Scholarship program, contact 479-782-7093.

FSBGC Partners with FS Public
Schools for Kids Day Training
More than 900 sixth grade students in the
Fort Smith Public Schools will participate in
“Kids Leadership Days” held at the Evans Boys
& Girls Club unit. The program is directed by
George Lieux.
The Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club serves as
a Partner in Education with the Fort Smith Public
Schools. The school system utilizes the Evans
facility to provide a Kidʼs Leadership Day, an
activity-based, hands-on planned day that assists
students in making positive and responsible
decisions. The activities are designed to foster
the ability to resist peer pressure associated with
alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse, as well as
violence and bullying.
A diverse set of strategies are used throughout
the day to promote a protective and positive
climate of respect for self, others, and the
environment. Developing friendship skills is
stressed and encouraged.
High School Students serve as group leaders
in cooperation with teachers, counselors,
parents, and mentors. Schools participating in
the event include: Orr, Sutton, Carnall, Woods,
Euper Lane, Sunnymede, Morrison, Fairview,
Beard, Cook, Cavanaugh, Bonneville, Barling,
Howard, Spradling, Tilles, Trusty, Ballman and
Albert Pike.
Taylor Quintin Honored at
National BGCA Event
As winner of the national 2006 Boys & Girls
Clubs of America Photography contest, GoldtrapGardner member Taylor Quintin, age 13, received
an all-expense paid trip to Universal Studios in
Florida. Quintin was accompanied by FSBGC
staff member Elizabeth Easter. The trip was held
July 20-22 in Orlando. Taylor was presented with
a special award for her photo entitled “Watering in
the Pool.”
The Boys & Girls Clubs of America
Photography contest is sponsored by Circuit City.
Local Club photos are judged and then forwarded
to the Southwest Regional exhibit. Selected
regional photos are then forwarded to the national
competition. For more information concerning
the Fort Smith Boys and Girls Club photography
program, contact Elizabeth Easter at 452-5779.

FORT SMITH AREA
UNITED WAY ANNUAL
DRIVE UNDERWAY
With a goal of $2.5 million, Fort Smith Area United Way
volunteers are working to raise funds for 32 deserving agencies.
Several Boys & Girls Club organizations benefit from the local
United Way each year, including: Fort Smith, Pairs, Van Buren,
Sallisaw and Greenwood. The United Way also provides funding
for Girls Inc. Ozark Area Youth Organizations, Suburban
League, Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts.
Nearly 30% of annual operating revenue of the Fort Smith
Boys & Girls Club comes from the United Way fund-raising
campaign. The pacesetter campaign raised $1.1 million in
August to get this years fund-raiser started. The campaign
chairman for the United Way is FSBGC volunteer Sam T.
Sicard, who has been a long-time basketball coach and Lean On
Me mentor at the Club.
Local youth organizations like the Boys & Girls Cllub
could not effectively operate without the continued success of
the United Way. For more information about the United Way

WEBSTER ENJOYS
SPECIAL RAZORBACK
EXPERIENCE
With support from the Fort Smith Quarterback
Club and the Brandon Burlsworth Foundation, 25 Fort
Smith Boys & Girls Club members along with 5 adult
chaperones were treated to a college football game on
September 23 in Fayetteville.
For Adam Webster, a 32 year volunteer football
coach for the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club, the game
was more than special. Not only was Webster able to
take his McDonald's midget team to the game, he was
able to visit with one of his former players, Razorback
Offensive Coordinator Gus Malzhan.
Malzhan is the offensive coordinator for the
Razorbacks and played football at the Evans Boys &
Girls Club for coach Webster and long time FSBGC
volunteer Hop Bray. Three current Razorback players
are former FSBGC members, including deep snapper
Brett Goode, offensive lineman Chase Pressley and
kicker Jeremy Davis.
Razorback coach, Gus Malzhan, was the guest
speaker at the annual FSBGC Awards Banquet in
March 2006. Malzhan paid tribute to Webster, who was
inducted into the FSBGC Hall of Fame in 2002.
Arkansas defeated Alabama in the contest 2423 with Jeremy Davis kicking the extra-point to
win the game.
GENTRY NAMED FAN
FAVORITE AT SPOKANE
Former Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club baseball star
Craig Gentry has been named the "Fan favorite" for the
Spokane Indians minor league baseball team. Spokane
is a farm league from the Texas Rangers.
Gentry, who led Spokane in hitting with a .281
batting average, is a former college player for UA Fort
Smith and the Arkansas Razorbacks. Gentry played
American Legion baseball for Fort Smith Kerwins. His
coach for Kerwins was Chuck Holcombe, who is being
inducted into the FSBGC Hall of Fame in November
Gentry was an outstanding basketball player
at the Goldtrap-Gardner Boys & Girls Club unit
as a youngster.
Webb Energy cheerleaders get the crowd "in the spirit" during a football
game at Hunts Park. There are close to 200 cheerleaders participating in
the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club program this fall.
"Future Stars" - first and second graders enjoy playing in the Rinky
Dink football league at Hunts Park. There are more than 650 players
participating in Boys & Girls Club tackle football (grades 1-6).
"Kick it" - soccer action at Goldtrap-Gardner Boys & Girls Club includes
four different leagues (boys and girls in grades 1-9).
