PilotsEYE.tv zeigt in Folge 14 „Lady’s trip to the closed
strip“ eine komplette Cargo-Tour, erstmals im Cockpit
einer Lufthansa McDonnell Douglas MD-11.
München, 24. März 2014. Sie wird gerne als „Lady der Lüfte“
bezeichnet. Die MD-11 ist schön, schnell und manchmal auch ein
wenig launisch. Zehn Tage begleitete PilotsEYE einen kompletten
Umlauf einer Cargo Mission von Europa über Afrika bis nach
Südamerika zu dem legendären Flughafen inmitten der höchsten
Hauptstadt der Welt: „Quito in Ecuador". Claus Richter, Chefpilot:
„So etwas werden Sie als normaler Passagier niemals erleben“.
Der fliegende Wintergarten
Ein Rundumblick soweit das Auge reicht. Die für die heutige zivile
Luftfahrt unüblich großen Cockpitscheiben, haben der MD-11 den
liebevollen Beinamen fliegender Wintergarten eingebracht. Das
letzte Exemplar, das 2004 an Lufthansa (D-ALCN) ausgeliefert
wurde, war eines von insgesamt nur 200 hergestellten Exemplaren.

Quito Central Airport - gefährlich und geschlossen
Quito Central Mariscal Sucre (UIO/SEQU) ist nicht nur aufgrund
seiner extremen Seehöhe von fast 3000m einer der schwierigsten
Flughäfen der Welt. Eingerahmt von hohen Bergen liegt er inmitten
eines Häusermeers, das bis wenige Meter an die Bahn heran reicht.
Die Runway ist für ihre Sturmböen berüchtigt und so gekrümmt,
dass man ihr Ende während der Landung nicht sehen kann. Die
extreme Höhe und damit geringere Luftdichte erfordert höhere
Geschwindigkeiten und erschwert gleichzeitig das Manövrieren
durch verringerte Leistung der Motoren. PilotsEYE.tv erklärt die
Besonderheiten und zeigt einen der letzten gefilmten An- und
Abflüge am mittlerweile für immer geschlossenen Airport.
ABNORMAL ist hier nur die Checkliste
„Eine Liste, die ich im Flug nur ungern zu Hand nehme“ sind die
letzten Worte des Kapitäns, nachdem er einen fiktiven Vogelschlag
mittels des Handbuchs für Notfälle und abnormale Situationen
abgearbeitet hat. Schritt für Schritt erklärt er jedes Kommando
und die gleichzeitig nötigen Maßnahmen im Cockpit.
Amazonas – Bilder die bleiben
Im Anflug auf Manaus, die Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates Amazonas,
staunen selbst die Piloten über die gute Sicht auf den sauberen Rio
Negro, der an dieser Stelle in den wasserreichsten Fluss der Welt,
dem braunen Amazonas mündet. Die Abflugroute führt direkt über
das Weltkulturerbe, den Anavilhanas-Archipel, einer beeindruckenden Ansammlung von 400, von Urwald überwucherten Inseln.
Bilder die sich genauso festsetzen, wie die fast quadratisch
anmutenden riesigen Abholzungen des Regenwaldes davor.
EPGS Error - Kleiner Fehler schnelle Reparatur
Die Türen sind bereits zu, das Pushback-Fahrzeug setzt sich
langsam in Bewegung, als die Meldung „EPGS fault“ (Electrical
Power Generator Systems) den Startvorgang abbricht. Kann der
Fehler zeitgerecht behoben werden? Die Antwort vom Boden
macht Mut, als der Kapitän nach einem Techniker ruft und vom
Boden hört: „Ich bin Ihr Techniker. Wie kann ich Ihnen helfen“.
Ruhetag - Zeig mir, wo die Rosen sind
Der 4800 Meter hohe Pichincha, auch Hausberg von Quito
genannt, ist das erste Ziel während der zweitägigen Tourpause von
Kapitän Wolfgang und Copilotin Anne-Katrin. Gemeinsam zeigen
sie uns die schönsten Ausblicke auf die Stadt, den echten Äquator
und laden uns auf einen Kurzbesuch in die „Basílica del Voto
Nacional“, inmitten der Altstadt ein. Beim Besuch von Sisapamba,
einer der größten Rosenfarmen etwas außerhalb, leuchten die
Augen von Anne besonders, als Rodrigo der Besitzer eine kleine
Einführung in die Rosenzucht gibt und die feinen Unterschiede
erklärt. Beeindruckende 90.000 Rosen verlassen diese Blumenfarm
täglich, um in die ganze Welt geflogen zu werden.
Was hat die MD-11, was andere nicht haben?
Die meisten Piloten lieben „ihre Lady“ mehr oder weniger - aber
alle respektieren sie für ihre Schnelligkeit, Wendigkeit und
Beschleunigung. Gleich zwei Kapitäne erklären in diesem Film die
Besonderheiten der Dame der Lüfte – gereiht nach den Bereichen:
Cockpit, Outside-check (im Bonus 1), mechanische Besonderheiten

CAC,
dem
Center
Accessoire
Compartement, das sich hier in der Mitte des Rumpfes – und nicht

Cockpitkarriere - Und eines Tages sitze ich links
Die Frage nach dem sichersten Weg, um Pilot zu werden, lässt sich
nicht mit einem Satz beantworten. Anne-Katrin Kramm, die die
gesamte Tour als Senior First Officer begleitet, erzählt z.B. von
ihrem Schlüsselerlebnis mit ihrer Oma Käthe, die so gern mal
fliegen wollte und damit ihre Enkelin auf den Geschmack brachte.
Auf Reiseflughöhe schildert die Pilotin, wie sich Berufs- und Privatleben – sie ist Mutter von zwei Töchtern – problemlos vereinbaren
lassen und wie man eine Karriere im Cockpit planen kann.
Vogelschlag in São Paulo
Es ist die Nähe zu einer Mülldeponie, die den Flughafen von Dakar
(Senegal) so anfällig für Vogelschlag macht. Als die Crew die
Maschine auf ihrem nächsten Stopp in São Paulo übernimmt,
entdeckt der Ground Techniker die Reste eines Vogels am rechten
Triebwerk. Wird dies zu Verzögerungen führen? Wie verfährt die
Bodencrew mit diesem Hindernis?
Schau mal, wer da spricht - Die Stimme der MD-11
Forsch, bestimmend und durchdringend, so ließe sich die Stimme
der automatischen Ansage in der MD-11 beschreiben. Das ist jene
Stimme, die z.B. die letzten Meter über Grund vor dem Aufsetzen

For the first time, PilotsEYE was given the opportunity to cover an
entire cargo mission from Europe to Africa continuing all the way to
South America. Furthest destination: one of the world’s most
spectacular and dangerous airports, situated in the very center of the
highest located capital of the world, „Quito in Ecuador". Claus
Richter, Chief Pilot: „An adventure, regular passengers won’t be able
to witness, ever”.
The flying winter garden
A cockpit which offers one of the most impressive panoramic views.
The MD-11 with its oversized cockpit windows is often called the
“Flying Conservatory”. The last aircraft, which was sold to Lufthansa
in 2004 (D-ALCN) is one of only 200 airframes ever produced.

Quito Central Airport – Too dangerous to be left open
Not only because of its altitude of almost 3000m, Quito Central
Mariscal Sucre (UIO/SEQU) is considered to be one of the world’s
most dangerous airports. Embedded in stunning mountain scenery,
the airport is surrounded by a dense accumulation of residential
homes, located only a few meters from the runway. This runway is
highly respected due to extreme wind gusts and its inclination. Pilots
are not able to overlook the end of the runway whilst rolling.
Technically, high elevations and reduced air densities require on
general higher speeds. This makes every maneuver even more difficult
during landing because of the reduced engine power. PilotsEYE.tv
explains the special features and shows one of the very last
approaches at Quito Central Airport, which has meanwhile closed for
good.

„I really hate using this checklist during a flight“ are the Captain’s last
words, before he takes out the handbook for emergencies and
abnormal situations and follows a simulated bird strike. Step by step
he explains every command and the associated actions to be
executed on the flight deck.
The Amazonas – Unforgettable impressions
Approaching Manaus, the capital city of the state of Amazonas, the
pilots are surprised by the unusual good visibility on the Rio Negro
River and its confluence with the world’s largest river, the muddy
brown Amazon. The departure route leads our crew past the
Anavilhanas-Archipelago, a UNESCO world heritage with a fascinating
landscape shaped by 400 elongated islands within the largest fresh
water archipelago of the world. Unforgettable beautiful impressions!
Unfortunately, other haunting marks like the sight of huge manmade
cut downs causing fatal rainforest damages will also stay in our
memory forever.
EPGS Error – Minor malfunction, rapid repair
The doors are already closed and the pushback tug slowly starts its
duty as an „EPGS fault“ (Electrical Power Generator Systems) error
message suddenly stops the process of start-up. Will the error be
resolved in time? Big relief on board as the Captain calls for a
technician and the ground-handler replies: “I’m your technician, how
can I help you today?”
Day Off - Take me to the rose garden
Pichincha, Quito’s very own volcano, is about 4800 meters high and
the first destination for Captain Wolfgang and Co-Pilot Anne-Katrin
during their two day break. They show us the best lookout points,
the original equatorial line and invite us to a short stop at the
„Basílica del Voto Nacional“, located in the old part of the town.
During the visit of Sisapamba, one of the largest rose farms in the
area, Anne’s eyes light up as the Mg. Dir. Rodrigo explains the art of
growing roses and the differences between the differing varieties. A
breathtaking amount of 90.000 roses leave this farm on a daily basis,
to be delivered to all the loving in the world by cargo airplane.
What is so special about the MD-11?
Only some are in love with “their flying lady”, but all pilots have the
essential respect when it comes to speed, maneuverability and
acceleration. Both Captains explain the specifications of their Lady of
the Skies. They illuminate details about the Cockpit as well as
important mechanical features during an Outside-check in Bonus part
I. Captain Wolfgang Raebiger opens the small door and invites us to
the CAC (Center Accessory Compartement) which in this aircraft is
specially located in the lower mid fuselage while normally being
placed below the flight deck.
Cockpit Careers – One day the left seat will be mine!
There is no simple answer to the question of how to become a
professional pilot. Anne-Katrin Kramm, Senior First Officer during
the entire trip, remembers the key moment which set off her career,
triggered by her grandmother Käthe. At cruising altitude Anne-Katrin
– being herself a mother to two children – explains the secrets of a
perfect balance between aviation and family life and how to set up a
plan for a successful cockpit career.
Problems with bird strikes in São Paulo
The striking distance to a landfill site makes the airport of Dakar
(Senegal) prone to bird strike events. During preflight inspection in
São Paulo, the technician discovers bird remains on the right engine
nacelle from the take-off in Dakar. Is this going to cause delays? How
is the ground crew going to deal with this issue?
Look who’s talking - The MD-11’s voice
Some would describe the MD-11’s “automated aural warning system”
as brisk, commanding or even penetrant. It announces e.g. the last
meters above ground before touchdown. Pilots respectfully call her
“Bitching Betty”, but who is the person behind the automatic voice?
PilotsEYE located the former employee of McDonnell Douglas and
shows the woman behind the voice.

During the trip, two different captains are responsible for the MD11’s left seat due to the rotation’s length of time. Chief Pilot Claus
Richter is on duty from Frankfurt to Dakar and São Paulo. The
Director of Flight Operations Wolfgang Raebiger is on duty for the
rest of the tour. You can gain a very personal insight into the pilot’s

Aéroport Central de Quito - dangereux et clos
Quito centrale Mariscal Sucre (UIO / SEQU) n'est pas seulement
un des aéroports les plus difficiles au monde en raison de son
altitude extrême de près de 3000m. Encadré par de hautes
montagnes, il est entouré d’une mer de maisons, qui s'étend
jusqu'à seulement quelques mètres de la piste. Piste tristement
célèbre pour ses rafales et incurvée de sorte que vous ne pouvez
pas en voir l’extrémité lors de l'atterrissage. L’altitude extrême et
la faible densité de l’air nécessite des vitesses d’approche plus
élevées et des manœuvres complexes avec une puissance des
moteurs réduite. PilotsEYE.tv nous en explique les particularités et
montre quelques unes des dernières arrivées et des derniers
décollages sur cet aéroport maintenant fermé pour toujours.
ANORMAL n’est ici qu’une liste de vérifications

mots du commandant de bord après nous avoir expliqué la
procédure en cas de collision avec des oiseaux et passé en revue la
liste de vérifications spéciale pour ce cas. Étape par étape, il
explique chaque action et en même temps les procédures
nécessaires dans le cockpit.
Amazon – Des images qui restent
À l’approche de Manaus, la capitale de l’état brésilien d’Amazonas,
les pilotes se laisse surprendre par la vue claire du Río Negro, qui
se jette alors dans les eaux brunes de l’Amazon, le plus grand
fleuve du monde. L'itinéraire de départ mène directement à
travers le site du patrimoine mondial, l'archipel d’Anavilhanas, une
impressionnante collection de 400 îles ornées d’une canopée
tropicale dense. Des images qui restent en mémoire, autant que la

Erreur EPGS – Petite erreur rapide réparation
Les portes sont déjà fermées, le véhicule de repoussage commence
sa manœuvre lorsque le message „EPGS fault“ (Système générateur
de puissance électrique) apparait et le processus de démarrage
d’arrête. L’erreur peut-elle être corrigée rapidement? La réponse à
la question du commandant de bord donne de l’espoir lorsqu’il
appelle le sol demandant à parler à un technicien et entend „Je suis
technicien. Comment puis-je vous aider“.
Jour de repos – Montres moi où sont les roses
Les 4800 mètres d’altitude du Pichincha, connu comme la
montagne de Quito, sont la première étape des deux jours de
pause du commandant de bord Wolfgang et de sa copilote AnneKatrin. Ensemble ils nous montrent les meilleurs points de vue de
la ville, le vrai Équateur et nous invitent à une bref visite dans la
vieille ville de la „Basilica del Voto Nacional“. La visite non loin de
là à Sisapamba, l’une des plus grandes exploitations de roses,
éblouie les yeux de Anne surtout lorsque Rodrigo, le propriétaire,
en fait la présentation et montre les différences subtiles entre les
roses. Impressionnant de voir que 90.000 roses quittent la
plantation chaque jour et sont envoyées par avions dans les monde
entier.
Qu’est-ce que le MD-11 a, que d’autres n’ont pas ?
La plupart des pilotes aiment plus où moins „leur Lady“ – mais
tous
ont
du
respect
pour
sa
vitesse,
son
agilité
et
ses
accélérations. Les deux commandants de bord expliquent dans ce
film les particularités de cette dame du ciel – classées suivant les
domaines : poste de pilotage, contrôles visuels extérieurs (dans le
bonus 1), caractéristiques mécaniques et une invitation dans le
CAC, le compartiment des équipements électroniques situé non
pas sous le poste de pilotage mais au milieu de l’appareil.
Carrière dans le cockpit – Et un jour je serais assise à
gauche.
La réponse à la question sur la meilleur façon de devenir pilote ne
peux pas être répondue en une phrase. Anne-Katrin Kramm, qui
accompagne toute la tournée en tant que copilote nous dit, par
exemple, que le moment clef pour elle a été avec grand-mère
Käthe, qui voulait un baptême de l’air depuis longtemps et donner
le goût du vol à sa petite-fille. À l’altitude de croisière, la pilote
explique comment vie privée et vie professionnelle – elle est mère
de deux filles – peuvent être conciliées facilement et comment on
peut bâtir un plan de carrière dans un cockpit.
Collision avec des oiseaux à San Paulo
C’est la proximité avec une réserve naturelle qui rend l’aéroport
de Dakar (Sénégal) propice aux collisions avec des oiseaux.
Lorsque l’équipage arrive à sa prochaine étape à San Paulo,
l’équipe des techniciens découvrent les restes d’un oiseau dans le
moteur droit. Est-ce que cela aura pour conséquence un retard ?
Que fera l’équipe au sol de cet obstacle ?
Regarde qui parle – La voix du MD-11
Énergique, déterminée et pénétrante, ainsi s’impose la voix des
annonces automatique du MD-11. C’est la voix par exemple qui
annonces les derniers mètres au dessus du sol avant le touché. À
quoi ressemble la vraie „Bitching Betty“, respectée de nombreux
