Teachers Do
BAD Things
•  A teacher makes over 300 decisions every day at school alone. These are usually decisions made quickly and on the spot. •  What happens when we make a bad decision?.... Dr. Lisa D. Waller
These types of relationships are an epidemic in American Schools T. Abbott Former Chief of Staff, USDOE Sexual Offenses Hundreds of teachers each year are discovered having inappropriate relationships with their students (what about the teachers that are never caught?) Oral Sex in a Wal-‐Mart Parking Lot Amanda Kay Miller, a classroom helper at North Harford High School in rural Maryland, has been charged with sexual abuse of a minor for allegedly having sex and oral sex with a 15-‐year-‐old student in a Wal-‐Mart parking lot. The student told investigators that he and Miller, 35, have been sexually involved since December 2012, reports the Daily Mail. There was the requisite exchange of nude photos. Miller would also sometimes buy the teen cigarettes and give him rides home. 1 7/8/14 Cheerleading Coach and Basketball Player Shelbyville, Indiana high school cheerleading coach Megan Crafton cut a plea deal after admitting that she performed oral sex on a 17-‐year-‐old male high school basketball player in her car in a grocery store parking lot.. She will serve 12 months of probation and complete 25 hours of community service, the New York Daily News reports. Under the Teacher’s Desk Former teacher’s aide Chrystina Delrosario has been sentenced to three years of probation and ordered to register as a sex offender, reports KGTV. She pleaded guilty to charges stemming from sexual encounters with a 15-‐year-‐old male student at a San Diego-‐area school for juveniles who have committed crimes. On one occasion, Delrosario and the student had sex under her classroom desk while another male student helpfully served as a lookout, adds Patch.com. Stalking Librarian Last spring, a 16-‐year-‐old student at New Rochelle High School in New York felt so harassed by a school librarian’s sexual advances that he helped police set up a sting operation to bust her. Documents freshly obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show the librarian, Marisa Anton, was thoroughly obsessed with the student, reports the Daily Mail. Among the scintillating details: Anton, 33, sent him breast photos and once showed up at his house , pushed him on to his bed and tried to pull down his pants as she asked, “Is this what you want?” Student Teacher Show and Tell Under a plea agreement, former student teacher Jenna Anne Schultz has been sentenced to 30 days in jail for sending a nude photo of herself to a 17-‐year-‐old male student, reports the Pioneer Press. Schultz, 27, later claimed that she had no recollection of sending the photo, and must have intoxicated. She must also complete treatment and two years of probation before she can hold another teaching job. Ms. Guided Back in 2008, former South Buffalo Charter School teacher Cara L. Dickey (34-‐year-‐old mother of three) was convicted of having sex with a 14-‐year-‐old male student and trying to coax him into a suicide pact by drinking a lethal cocktail of rum, Tylenol and Nyquil. Dickey recently became a fugitive when she removed an ankle-‐monitoring bracelet she was required to wear during her parole. She then _led to Chicago with the girlfriend she met in prison, explains The Buffalo News. Dickey was rearrested without incident by federal marshals. After-‐Prom Party Tenth-‐grade English teacher Nikki Scherwitz allegedly turned up at a Brazosport High School (Texas) after-‐prom party and then left with a 16-‐year-‐old student. An investigation followed, reports Houston’s KTRK-‐TV. Scherwitz eventually confessed to maintaining a weeks-‐long sexual relationship with the student. Like so many of these trysts, this one started with text messaging. The 25-‐year-‐old teacher has since quit her job. She faces a handful of charges including child sexual assault. 2 7/8/14 He Said, She Said Jennifer Vigil, a married science teacher Pojoaque Valley High School in Santa Fe, New Mexico, allegedly raped a student this spring. There are two sides to the story, the Daily Mail reports. The student says that Vigil, 31, locked her classroom door and said, “You’re not leaving until I get something from you.” The teen claims he permitted the teacher to perform oral sex on him so he could leave. Vigil says there was consensual sex, instigated by the student. Whatever the case, she now faces charges under a state law prohibiting sex between students and school employees. Doesn’t ADD Up Alicia Gray, 28, allegedly had a sexual relationship with a 14-‐year-‐old student at MGM High School in Mobile Alabama, reports GA Daily News. The married math teacher turned herself in after a warrant was issued for her arrest. She was accompanied by her husband and her attorney. She is currently on administrative leave. Sexting Nude Photos More SEXTING Erin Nicole Thorne, 28, is yet another English teacher who allegedly sent graphic text messages and the obligatory nude photos of herself to an underage male student. The twist here, reports the Daily Mail, is that Thorne and the senior respectfully waited until he turned 18 before they allegedly did the deed. Nevertheless, of_icials at Broadneck High School in Anne Arundel County, Maryland have placed the teacher on leave. She also faces criminal charges related to the display of obscene matter to a minor and, apparently, child pornography. Cara Alexander, an English teacher at Woodside High School in Newport News, Virginia , faces a handful of charges for an alleged tryst with a 17-‐year-‐old male student. Allegations include the requisite sexting as well as nude photos on the student’s phone. Alexander, 27, is a ninth-‐grade teacher, notes New York Daily News, and had once been the student’s teacher. He attends a different school now. Middle School Teacher Police arrested Jessica M. Boyers, a 24-‐year-‐old teacher at Highland Middle School in Louisville, Kentucky, for alleged sexual abuse. Little is available in the way of details, according to local FOX af_iliate WDRB. The bare facts are that the alleged victim is a juvenile and that nothing occurred on school grounds. Boyers has been removed from the classroom pending the results of a criminal investigation. Object Rape Former Riverton High School math teacher Courtney Louise Jarrell, 22, faces one count of sex abuse and another count of object rape after an encounter with a 17-‐year-‐old female student. The incident allegedly occurred at Jarrell’s house. The Utah teacher has submitted her resignation, reports local CBS af_iliate KUTV. School district of_icials have also forbidden her from campus. If convicted, Jarrell’s prison sentence could range from _ive years to life. 3 7/8/14 Double Dating Disaster Donna Newton-‐McNally, 41, and Melanie Akerberg, 33 are two high school teachers at Sachem High School North on Long Island accused of sexual relationships with male students. The students allegedly involved are seniors, the New York Post reports. Both are also popular athletes with girlfriends. Apparently, one of the student’s girlfriends found damning texts and alerted the principal. Both teachers have been removed from their respective classrooms since the allegations surfaced. Both teachers are also married. One of the husbands allegedly confronted one of the students. Dirty Dancing Texas high school dance teacher Amanda Feenstra is accused of carrying on a sexual relationship with a 17-‐year-‐old female student. Trysts occurred at Feenstra’s Houston-‐area home, in her Humble High School of_ice and at sporting events. Feenstra, 31, is married. According to the New York Daily News, the student told police that she and the teacher “had sex so many times she cannot remember.” Blackmailed at Break-‐up Kahtanna Culp, formerly a teacher at Northbrook High School in Houston, Texas has been charged with having a longstanding sexual relationship with a male student (now graduated). According to the Houston Chronicle, Culp, 29, says the student blackmailed her for money when she tried to end the relationship. The student says Culp threw several parties at her house where pot and alcohol were offered. “I didn’t do it…I am a Racist” Esther Irene Stokes, a 61-‐year-‐old Texas school teacher who has been accused of molesting a 7-‐
year-‐old girl, says it’s impossible because she “doesn’t like black students because she was prejudiced.” The student alleges that Stokes touched her “private part” on the outside of her clothes, the Houston Chronicle reports. Despite failing a polygraph, Stokes has responded to the charges by saying she is too racist to want to touch a black student, sexually or otherwise. Police detective J. Blanchard said, “[Stokes] doesn’t like to even touch the black children on their hand, she shies away when they try to hug her — she admitted to being prejudiced.” Lights, Camera, Action Married Minnesota teacher’s aide Terina Ann Parr allegedly paid a 17-‐year-‐old male student $120 to delete a cellphone video of him feeling her breasts, according to the New York Daily News. The teen says he made the video “so that he would have proof.” Parr, 44, argues that she is actually a victim of sexual harassment in this case. “We believe once the evidence comes out in this case, it will turn out Mrs. Parr was the victim of sexual misconduct,” said her attorney. Dirty Teacher Livingston High School (California) agriculture teacher Melody Carter-‐McCabe, 28, will serve _ive months in prison for a torrid love affair with a student. The yearlong entanglement between married teacher and 15-‐year-‐old student allegedly featured adult toys and explicit cellphone photos, reports the New York Daily News. 4 7/8/14 Facebook Propositions Greenback, Tennessee high school teacher Angela Gay Masingo, 39, has been charged with using Facebook messages to attempt (apparently unsuccessfully) to convince a teenage boy to have sex with her. The Daily Mail reports that the teen’s parents caught on when they discovered the suggestive missives saved for posterity on the social networking site. Special Privileges Debra Beasley LaFave was a 23-‐year-‐old teacher at Angelo L. Greco Middle School in Temple Terrace, Florida when she was arrested for having multiple sex encounters with a fourteen-‐year-‐
old student throughout various locations in the school, including performing oral sex on the male student in her classroom and having intercourse with him in a portable classroom located on the school campus. Although facing much more serious charges initially, Debra Beasley LaFave plead guilty to less serious offenses in light of the victim’s mother learning the trial would be broadcast on Court TV. Debra Beasley LaFave served no jail time for the crimes in question, and as part of her sentence, LaFave registered as a sex offender, served three years in house arrest, and must serve seven years on probation. SC High School Teacher Ellen Niemiec, 29, Lake Moultrie, is accused of sexual battery for allegedly having sex with three of her students on the same day. Multiple Mistakes Sandra Beth Geisel,42-‐year old teacher, employed at Christian Brothers Academy in Albany, New York. She was noted for having sexual relations with at least three (3) students, although Geisel claims that the later two (2) students were involved with her sexually against her will due to their attempts to blackmail the woman. In the end, testimony and evidence against Geisel was overwhelming, including claims she was intoxicated while on the job, actually getting arrested for DUI while awaiting trial, and allegedly providing minors alcohol. Sandra Beth Geisel was sentenced to six months incarceration in exchange for pleading guilty. She served two months of her sentence before being released in December of 2005. Teacher – Inmate – Wife -‐ Mother Mary Kay Fualaau, formerly known as Mary Kay Letourneau, was convicted as a child rapist and imprisoned from 1997 to 2004 for having sexual intercourse with her 13-‐year-‐old student, Vili Fualaau. When class began, Smith asked the 13 year old birthday boy to sit in a seat at the front of the classroom. The teacher gave the boy a full contact 3 ½ minute lap dance where the boy slapped the teacher’s behind. Afterwards, the teacher hugged that boy and said “I love you baby.” The video was taped by classmates. She is facing criminal charges. Alleged Molestation of 10 yr old student A married mother of three, Lisa Davis, tutored the student afterschool and spent time with him at the movies. Alleged that she fondled his genitals and he fondled her breasts. Faces a maximum life sentence if convicted. Common Themes What are the common themes? Mistakes? Flora Whittemore Faking a Bomb Threat to Get a Day Off Other Bad Decisions Jennifer Gomes, an elementary-‐school gym teacher in Denver, allegedly left a note outside the Catholic school where she worked, which read "there is a bomb inside." The 42-‐year-‐old was arrested two days later, and allegedly told police that she left the note because she didn't want to go to work that day. Gomes was suspended from the school, and was sentenced to four years of mental health probation and 180 days of home detention. Sending Poo Home in a Child’s Backpack Peeing in front of your students Kindergarten teacher, Susan Graham sent a 5-‐year-‐old student home with a bag of feces nestled in his backpack, along with the note, "This little turd was on the cloor of my room." The boy's parents contacted the West Valley, Washington school district and the boy was moved to another school to carry out the school year. "I'm still kind of in shock over this, because why would somebody do this?" asked the boy's father. "It's disgusting.” The district sent the 58-‐year-‐old teacher a warning letter, which said that similar behavior in the future would result in disciplinary action, possibly termination. Substitute teacher, Coleman Eaton Jr. was in charge of a fourth grade class. According to the Riverdale, Georgia police, the 60-‐year-‐old walked to the back of the classroom, told the kids "not to turn around," and then urinated in the trashcan. A few of the kids did turn around. Eaton later claimed that he was simply pouring apple juice into the trashcan. But the police obtained the evidence. He was arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated child molestation. Paying for Grades Taunting a Disabled Child Jeff Spires, a teacher at a high school in Charlotte County, Florida, would up a student's grade if they paper-‐clipped cash ($15 to $70) to the back of their papers or tests. When the school found out, it suspended him without pay. Spires resigned by the end of the month. When investigators asked him why he did it, he replied: "That's what I don't know -‐-‐ why. Maybe I see the kids are as desperate as I am." Wendy Portillo, a kindergarten teacher in Port St. Lucie, Florida, allegedly had every member of her class say what they didn't like about their 5-‐year-‐old special needs classmate. She then had them vote as to whether the boy should stay in the class. 14 voted him out; two voted that he should stay. The teacher then asked the boy, who was being tested for autism, what he should do next. "I guess I'll go sit with the principal," he reportedly said. Portillo then allegedly said that the principal didn't want him around either. The case did not meet the criteria for emotional child abuse, according to the state's attorney's ofcice, so no criminal charges were ciled. But Portillo was suspended from teaching for one year without pay and her tenure was revoked. In an appeal, Portillo won back her tenure. 7 7/8/14 Lesson in Chemistry at a Strip Club Prince Albert “Bonding” 0  A 57 year old male drama teacher in South Africa took Indiana chemistry teacher celebrated a student’s birthday by taking several students to a local strip club.
