16 years after the foundation - back then known under the name of Lycaon – the debut album of the Finnish folk
metal trio Wolfhorde is finally released. However, they have not been completely inactive in this period of time: 3
demos and 2 EPs and singles have already seen the light of the world and now it is time to listen to the album at last.
Let's see whether it was worth waiting for.
Already the intro "Vegvísir" with its dominant flutes and percussion shows that we are not offered a cliché-ridden
tootling here. In fact, here one gets the full broadside of melodic metal in combination with perfectly used,
traditional instruments.
On the whole album there is not even one song which cannot score with a catchy melody, nice instrumental
highlights (for example, the trump in "Death Long-Due") or other peculiarities.
Especially the title track "The Gates of North" is to be praised. This 9-minute epos is a worthy conclusion for this
album beginning with quiet ambient parts and a rather melancholic feeling at first but it increases in the further
course, brings various tempo changes along and simply evaporates too quickly.
Conclusion:
Now I still have not complained once in the whole review because I think it's hard to find negative points here. Only
the always equal kind of singing could change in future releases. Wolfhorde are a very good alternative to the more
popular representatives of the genre in general. Only one request of the band: Don't take so much time for the next
album again.
