The combination of wineries and appealing countryside, marked by castles,
Venetian villas and medieval towns and villages, makes the Grave zone a
favorite destination for wine-tourists, who want to explore new territories
but also wish to discover the culture and the typical traditions of our area.
This map is offered as an instrument capable of assuring awareness of the
estates and their wines as well as the innumerable riches that this territory
possesses. Our wish is that the reader will find useful information that will
increase knowledge of the value of the production of the Grave.
Willkommen im Land der DOC-Weine „Friuli Grave“, einer glücklichen Insel
im Herzen des Friaul, mit ihrem Reichtum an Traditionen, Farben und
Aromen.
Die Harmonie von Weingütern und faszinierender Landschaft, geprägt von
Schlössern, venezianischen Villen und mittelalterlichen Dörfern macht die
„Grave“ zu einem bevorzugten Ziel des Önotourismus, dessen Anhänger
neue Gebiete kennen lernen und die Kultur und typischen Traditionen der
Dörfer entdecken wollen.
Dieser Plan soll helfen, die Weingüter und Weine sowie die unzähligen
Reichtümer dieses Gebietes bekannt zu machen. Unser Wunsch und Ziel ist
es, dass der Leser angeregt wird, tiefer in die Region „Grave“ einzudringen
und ihre Erzeugnisse zu finden und zu genießen.
Le “Grave” si estendono su una superficie di circa 7.000 ettari a
cavallo del fiume Tagliamento, tra le province di Pordenone e Udine.
Con circa 350.000 hl la DOC “Friuli Grave” si pone al primo posto tra
le Denominazioni regionali con oltre il 50% della produzione.
L’alta pianura friulana, a ridosso dell’arco prealpino, è caratterizzata
da un paesaggio naturale di spiccata originalità: i “Magredi” o
“Grave”. Si tratta di un’ampia zona formata dalle alluvioni dei fiumi
Meduna, Cellina e Tagliamento che, nel corso dei millenni, hanno
depositato enormi quantitativi di materiale calcareo-dolomitico
strappati alla montagna dalla violenza delle acque e trascinati a valle
lungo il loro alveo.
L’intera pianura è formata da terreno di origine alluvionale,
grossolano nella parte settentrionale della DOC, più minuto man
mano che i fiumi proseguono il loro corso. Le montagne, oltre ad aver
dato origine al terreno delle “Grave”, lo riparano dai venti freddi
provenienti da nord. Questo fatto, insieme all’effetto benefico del
mare Adriatico, ha concorso alla creazione di un clima
particolarmente adatto alla coltivazione delle vite. Vi è però un’altra
ragione che rende le “Grave” adatte ad una produzione di qualità: il
terreno, caratterizzato da una ampia superficie sassosa, esalta
l’escursione termica tra il giorno e la notte favorendo così uve con
una spiccata dotazione di aromi e vini profumati ed eleganti.
Nelle “Grave”, come in tutta la viticoltura friulana, il vino porta il
nome del vitigno dal quale ha origine. I vini delle varietà a bacca
bianca si presentano freschi, fruttati ed eleganti; i rossi armonici e
profumati da giovani, pieni e strutturati se invecchiati.
The Grave covers an area of about 7,000 hectares (17,290 acres) extending
on either side of the Tagliamento river in the provinces of Pordenone and
Udine in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia. With a production of about
350,000 hectoliters, the Friuli Grave DOC zone occupies first place among
the regional DOCs with more than 50% of the output.
The soil of the high Friuli plain, sheltered by the arc of the Alpine foothills,
is characterized by a natural landscape of pronounced originality: the
Magredi or Grave (gravelly soil). It is an extensive zone formed by alluvial
matter washed down from the Alps by the rivers Meduna, Cellina and
Tagliamento. In the course of the millennia, they have dropped enormous
quantities of calcareous-dolomitic material gouged out of the mountains by
the violence of the water and washed along the course of their riverbeds.
The entire plain is formed by terrain of alluvial origin. It is coarse in the
northernmost segment of the DOC zone and becomes ever finer as the rivers
continue along their course virtually to the coast. In addition to having
served as the source of the Grave terrain, the mountains protect the valley
from icy winds blowing down from the heights to the north. This aspect,
along with the mitigating influence of the Adriatic Sea, has created a
climate that is particularly adapted to the cultivation of vines. However,
there is another reason why the Grave is adapted to quality production. The
terrain, characterized to a large extent by stony material, has a double
effect favorable to the vines. During the day, the stones reflect the sun’s
rays, which are necessary for the ripening of the grapes. At night, they
release the heat accumulated during the day. That influence is important
above all at the end of summer, because it permits extension of the harvest
season and, therefore, adds to the certainty of obtaining grapes that are
more sugary and with greater content of aromas and flavors. It was not by
chance that long ago the growers covered the soils of their vineyards with
stones, thereby reproducing the environmental characteristics of the Grave.
In the Grave, as in the whole of Friuli’s viticultural sector, wines bear the
names of the varieties from which they are made. Wines made from white
varieties are fresh, fruity and elegant and they do not tire the palate with
scents and aromas that are excessively pronounced. The reds are
harmonious, full-bodied and odorous when young and full and structured if
aged.
The Consorzio per la Tutela dei Vini DOC Friuli Grave (Consortium for the
Oversight of the Friuli Grave DOC Wines), founded in 1972, has as its
objective the promotion of awareness of the territory as well as the
valorization of its wines. The successes of recent years were the result of
various factors: the functionality of new installations, modern techniques
of cultivation, the selection of varieties best adapted to the environment
and above all the farsightedness of the producers. Having correctly
interpreted the spirit of the appellation, they opted principally for quality
and valorized their production, thereby contributing to the spread of the
wines’ outstanding reputation.

ALLA SCOPERTA DELLA DOC FRIULI GRAVE: STORIA, TERRITORIO E VINI
Il Consorzio per la Tutela dei Vini a DOC “Friuli Grave”, costituito nel
1972, ha tra i principali obiettivi la promozione e la conoscenza del
territorio, nonché la valorizzazione dei propri vini. I riconoscimenti
ottenuti negli ultimi anni sono il risultato di diversi fattori: la
razionalità dei nuovi impianti, le moderne tecniche colturali, la
selezione dei vitigni più adatti all’ambiente di coltivazione e
soprattutto la lungimiranza dei produttori. Essi, interpretando
correttamente lo spirito della Denominazione, hanno scelto
principalmente la qualità, valorizzando così la loro produzione e
contribuendo a diffonderne il buon nome.

Die „Grave“ erstrecken sich über eine Fläche von circa 7.000 Hektar entlang
des Flusses Tagliamento über die Provinzen Pordenone und Udine in Friaul.
Mit einer Produktionsmenge von circa 350.000 hl liegt die DOC-Region
„Friuli Grave“ an erster Stelle unter den Qualitätsweinbaugebieten des Friaul
und kommt auf einen Anteil von über 50% der gesamten Weinmenge.
Die Friauler Hochebene liegt hinter dem Voralpenbogen und lässt sich
darstellen als eine Naturlandschaft von seltener Ursprünglichkeit: „Magredi“
oder „Grave“. Es handelt sich um ein weites Land das gestaltet wurde durch
die Anschwemmungen der Flüsse Meduna, Cellina und Tagliamento. Im Lauf
der Jahrtausende haben sie durch die Kraft ihrer Wässer riesige Mengen an
kalkreichem Material aus den Dolomiten gerissen und in die Täler entlang
ihrer Flussbetten hinunter getragen.
Die gesamte Ebene ist ein aus diesen Sedimenten gebildetes Schwemmland
und zwar grobsteinig im nördlichen Teil des DOC-Gebietes und feinkörniger
je weiter die Flüsse ihrem Weg folgen bis in die unmittelbare Nähe zur
Küste. Die Berge haben aber nicht nur den Boden der „Grave“ geprägt, sie
schützen es auch vor den kalten Winden aus dem Norden. Dieser Umstand
bewirkt zusammen mit dem günstigen Einfluss der nahen Adria ein für den
Weinbau ganz besonders günstiges Klima. Es gibt jedoch noch einen
weiteren Grund, weshalb die Region „Grave“ für die Erzeugung hoher
Qualitäten prädestiniert ist: der von zahlreichen Steinen überzogene Boden
übt in zweifacher Hinsicht einen positiven Effekt auf die Reben aus:
Während des Tages reflektiert er die Sonnenstrahlen, die für das Ausreifen
der Trauben wichtig sind, um dann während der Nachtstunden die Wärme
wieder zu reflektieren, die er in den heißesten Stunden des Tages
gespeichert hat. Dieser Einfluss ist speziell in den Spätsommertagen von
Bedeutung da er es erlaubt, den Lesezeitpunkt hinauszuschieben und
Trauben von höherer Zuckerkonzentration und größerem Aromareichtum zu
gewinnen. Es ist kein Zufall, dass die Weinbauern früherer Zeiten bestrebt
waren, die Böden ihrer Weingärten mit Steinen zu bedecken um so die
typischen Gegebenheiten der „Grave“ nachzuahmen.
In den „Grave“ trägt der Wein, so wie im gesamten Friaul, den Namen der
Rebsorte aus der er gewonnen wurde. Die Weissweine präsentieren sich
typischerweise frisch, fruchtig und elegant. Sie ermüden nicht die
Geschmacksnerven durch übertrieben Aromen. Die Rotweine zeigen sich
harmonisch, von gutem Körper, würzig als Jungweine und strukturierter,
tiefgründiger als gereifte Weine.
Das 1972 gegründete Consorzio per la Tutela dei Vini a DOC „Friuli Grave“
(Genossenschaft zum Schutz des DOC „Friuli Grave“) hat die Aufgabe, die
Region, die Bekanntheit und die Wertschätzung ihrer Weine zu fördern. Die
Erfolge der letzten Jahre sind das Ergebnis mehrerer Faktoren:
systematische Anlage neuer Weingärten nach aktuellen Erkenntnissen,
moderne Reberziehungsformen, Selektion geeigneter Sorten in Bezug auf
unser Klima und den Boden und vor allem die Aufgeschlossenheit der
Produzenten. Entsprechend dem Grundgedanken des DOC-Disziplinars haben
sie sich der Qualitätsproduktion verpflichtet und damit ihre Erzeugnisse
aufgewertet und den guten Ruf ihrer Region gefestigt.
