-Alhamdulillah, with Allah's blessing, the month of Ramadan is on us. IFP will follow the Chicago Halaal Committee to determine the start of Ramadan and Eid.
-As in the past, IFP will be organizing Iftar for the Muslim community of Greater Peoria Area this
year also, Inshallah, on Saturdays and Sundays. The signup sheets for community Iftar
and arrangements for the Hafiz are up on the bulletin board in Masjid-As-Salaam. Alhamdulillah,
slots have filled out fairly quickly and only one date was available at the time of the print of this
newsletter. Hosts are requested to bring Zabiha meat only. The Masjid will provide paper products Inshallah.
-Please note that there will not be a Monthly potluck in August and September due to Ramadan
and Eid activities.
-Our second ‘Heart walk’ is on Saturday, Sept. 5th at 8:00am at the Shoppes at Grand Prairie.
This walk is to promote physical activity and heart-healthy living. This year, more than one million walkers will participate in more than 450 events scheduled around the country, raising funds
to save lives from this country's No. 1 and No. 3 killers...heart disease and stroke. All donations

Last Month’s Highlight
It was that time of the year again: for a summer volleyball event! On Aug 15th &
16th, a community tournament was organized by Brs. Parvez Shaik, Rianto Rahman
and Faisal Hasan at Masjid-As-Salaam. Five Teams, led by the following team
captains, participated in this tournament:
Team 1 Mohammed Daoud
Team 2 Mustafiz urRahman
Team 3 Rianto Rahman
Team 4 Sami Al-Sayed
Team 5 Tariq Ali
The competition was very intense, spirited, and a lot of fun. Team 2 and Team 5
reached the finals, but unfortunately due to rain, the finals were postponed for a
week and the final results will be published in the next edition of the newsletter.
Sunday School “Principal’s Corner”
Assalamalaykum!
Well, Sunday school has officially started and it's great to see everyone back for another
great year! Our staff and teachers are all ready to go, and all parents, teachers and students have completed their orientations!
More Pics From The
Summer Camp!
I am very excited about the school's Ramadan project this year, which is collecting
canned food for the local Peoria Food Bank. However, we want the ENTIRE COMMUNITY to participate in this project, so please donate as many items as you can during
the next four weeks, and let's see how much food our masjid can collect!
Our theme of the month for Sept. is "Face Painting Day" so make sure your children attend every Sunday to catch this special event. We have lots of important dates during
the month of Sept. as well: Please note:
Sunday, Sept. 6th: School closed for Labor Weekend
Sunday, Sept. 13th from 12:30-1:00pm: Teacher's Meeting in cafeteria
Sunday, Sept. 20th: School closed for Eid-ul-Fitr
Sunday, Sept. 27: Eid Pizza Party! Please do not send lunch with your child.
Looking forward to a great year with a great staff!

Fanoos (Lantern) is just pure fun for the kids, nothing more. Of all the Islamic countries, Fanoos is most
common in Egypt, as part of the culture, a tradition that goes back all the way to the reign of the Fatimid
Caliphate. The night before Ramadan, the Caliph would go outside to look for the moon signaling the beginning of the month of Ramadan. The children of the town would go out
with the Caliph and light the way for him. Each child would carry a
Fanoos and sing songs to welcome in the new month of Ramadan.
Fanoos is traditionally made of tin and colored glass, with a candle inside. Some modern ones are battery operated, but do not have the
same charm.
Kids who grew up in the past century, before electricity were available,
loved Fanoos as it was a way to have their own light and not just any
light a colorful light . It was perfect light in the dark of the night. It
is lighted with candles. Going out of their homes after they break their
fast (if they fast) at sunset, the streets would be dark (no electricity)
and the only light is coming from their Fanoos. They get together and
sing songs (singing "wahawy ya wahawy") and play kid games, or may
visit an elder who tell them a story.
Fanoos comes in different sizes and colors and even different shapes. Some manufacturers even made it in
modern shapes, e.g. car, rocket, airplane ...etc. in addition to some old fashioned shapes of minaret, tree,
crescent...etc.
The painting by the Egyptian artist Ali Dessouqi’s, bright and deceptively simple pantheon, shows kids playing
with the Fanoos.

Ramadan Lantern (Fanoos)
Use white construction paper or use different color construction papers.
Use a stencil or trace for them the shape of the lantern.
They can then color it with red, yellow, blue, green, purple, gold, or silver
crayons, pencils, or markers. Every section of the Fanoos should have a
different bright color. Otherwise, make all the sections of the Fanoos from
different color construction paper and glue them together on a cardboard
backing so they could hang them on a string.
If you prefer you can trace for them the three D model and let them color it.
stand--alone Fanoos. You may
Fold one half on the other to complete the circle and transform it into a stand
