Giving Thanks - Foundation for Community Care
Giving Thanks
What does it mean to give your time? What does it mean to give your talent? What does it mean
to give your treasures?
In July of 2010, the Foundation for Community Care’s Board of Directors met and made the decision to raise $1.4 million dollars for Phase II of Sidney Health Center’s Cancer Care Center. The
excitement and energy in the room was overwhelming as we realized the difference a state of the
art Cancer Center would make in our community and to those we loved. There were twenty of us
sitting around the table that day… board members, staff, and employees of Sidney Health Center;
we each left the meeting with the thoughts of every person we know that has ever been touched by
cancer on our mind.
A year and a half later the hard work, dedication and generosity of our community has made that
goal a reality. I want to take this time to send out a special thank you to every donor, business,
volunteer and supporter who helped make this dream for our community a reality. The amazing,
heartwarming stories I have heard from cancer survivors and their families these past 18 plus
months is nothing short of remarkable.
Winston Churchill sums it up the best, “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by
what we give.”
THANK YOU!!!

Summer 2012
Sidney Health Center Cancer Care Phase II Becomes Reality
Thanks to the many people who donated to the Foundation’s
Cancer Care Campaign, Jacoby Pawlowski Trexler
Architects construction division broke ground on Phase II of
Sidney Health Center’s Cancer Care Center. Construction
crews started moving ground on May 21 to prepare the area
for the outside entrance.
According to a 2011 assessment, Phase II of the Cancer
Center was a high priority for cancer survivors. In fact, the
majority of focus group members wrote down Phase II as the
number one action step for Sidney Health Center to become
a cancer center of excellence. Many focus group members
raved about the care they had received through the chemotherapy department despite the location, referring to the designated space in the ER area.
Phase II involves renovating Suite 103 in the clinic and building a private entrance to the Cancer Care Center. Upon
completion of the project, all outpatient cancer care services
will be centralized, enhancing and streamlining patient care
for those going through treatment. The renovation includes
adding four chemotherapy and IV therapy infusion rooms
with a centralized nursing station as well as providing designated clinic space for the medical oncologist.
A large anonymous donation to the Foundation made it possible for Sidney Health Center to start the bidding process
for Phase II and begin construction this spring. Fundraising
efforts continue to help reach the $1.4 million goal.
Collaborative events included the Cancer Auction Regional
Event with the Good Cents Store and the Cancer Coalition’s
Annual “Best Kept Secret” Bra Auction. Together, the events
brought in nearly $80,000 and continued the awareness and
importance of completing Phase II for area chemotherapy
patients.
“To have construction started is very exciting,” stated Judy
Carda, RN, Cancer Care Manager. “We can hardly wait to
see this project to completion. Our patients will see the benefits first hand from improved privacy to personalized care.”
In January 2011, Sidney Health Center opened Phase I of
the newly constructed Cancer Care suite and expanded its
outpatient cancer services to include radiation therapy. The
first of its kind in Montana, Sidney Health Center installed a
TomoTherapy Hi-Art radiation treatment system, which is one
of the most advanced cancer treatment systems in the area.
In fact, the next closest unit is located in Rapid City, South
Dakota.
With the estimated completion of Phase II set for mid-fall, all
outpatient cancer care services will be located in one-centralized location with its own private entrance. Rick Haraldson,
Sidney Health Center CEO stated, “We have some of the
best resources available to treat cancer locally and thanks
to the Foundation’s generous donors, we are meeting one
of the priorities identified by area cancer patients. Now that’s
community support at its finest!”

Montana Tax Credit
How to take advantage of the Montana Tax Credit
Reprinted in part from http://www.rocky.edu
An incredible tax incentive is
available for Montana taxpayers
through 2013 for gifts eventually benefiting permanent
endowments of the Foundation
for Community Care and it is
simple and easy to capture.
Mrs. Ruth Iversen and her latehusband, Iver, farmed in the
Sidney area for many years.
Ruth held many jobs outside of
her primary homemaker position
throughout the years. She was
an English Teacher at Sidney
Public Schools, Dean of Women at a college, and even a
basketball coach! She and her husband raised four children
and today Ruth enjoys her numerous grandchildren. She is a
firm supporter of her local community. This is what Ruth has to
say about the Tax Credit benefit she has received by creating
Charitable Gift Annuities with the local healthcare foundation:
“Being a donor under the Montana Tax Credit for Endowed
Giving law is pure joy for someone who loves a bargain! It
means an immediate reduction in the state income tax, it
means the gift will be used locally to provide improved services, and the state will get additional tax revenue. It is a winning
situation for everyone! It is exciting to give a gift, which not
only means a substantial reduction in our income tax, but also
benefits our community. We can view with pride the improvements brought about by banding together and working to
make our community a healthier and happier place to live.”
The credit is realized by individuals making “qualified” planned
gifts to permanent endowments of Montana tax exempt
nonprofit charitable organizations such as the Foundation for
Community Care. The credit for individuals is 40 percent of
the allowed charitable deduction permitted on federal income
tax returns in the year of gift and in an amount not to exceed
the taxpayer’s Montana income tax due in the year of the gift.
Tax credits that cannot be used cannot be carried forward,
but ordinary charitable deductions producing those unused
credits can be carried forward for future use. This can represent a substantial income tax saving on both state and federal
income tax returns for taxpayers who itemize their deductions.
The savings are greatest for those who itemize their deductions and pay taxes in higher brackets. The maximum allowed
state tax credit is the lesser of $10,000 per taxpayer or the
amount of Montana income tax liability in the year of gift. A
husband and wife can each claim that maximum credit. Many
taxpayers make gifts of such size that their entire state income
tax liability for the year may be paid by the tax credit rather
than by check or accumulated estimated tax payments.
If the gift is made by transferring appreciated securities held
for more than one year by the donor the capital gains tax on
the appreciation can be avoided as well on both the state and
federal tax returns! This can save an additional 15 percent of
the gain on the federal tax and at present 6.8 percent of the
state tax on long term capital gains, totaling nearly 22 percent
of the profit. That is hard won money.
It is not hard to see why taxpayers have been using this tax
saving incentive to make gifts to local tax exempt organizations like the Foundation for Community Care in increasing
amounts since the legislation was adopted in 1997.
Call 406-488-2273 and talk to the Foundation for Community
Care’s experienced staff. There is no cost or obligation and all
conversations are confidential.
Local Families and the Foundation
Benefit from Montana Tax Credit
The Milne Family
“Our family realizes the critical importance of having quality
health care available in a rural community. We understand this
comes at a cost, however. We choose to support the future of
health care in our local area and the Montana Tax Credit for
Endowed Giving is an added bonus toward ensuring we and
other community members ‘step up the plate’ by giving charitable donations. The ability to reap some immediate tax benefits
through the Montana Tax Credit, while at the same time supporting the endowment fund of the Foundation for Community Care
to provide for the future health of our area, is a win-win situation.
As parents to a child who has asthma, we understand first-hand
the benefits of having an emergency room minutes, not hours,
away when your son is gasping for air in the middle of the night.
In a nutshell, the quality of life we enjoy in Eastern Montana is
enhanced by quality health care and the ability to provide quality
health care is enhanced by the Montana Tax Credit for Endowed
Giving helping us to build the Foundation for Community Care’s
Endowment Fund.” – Brian Milne
The Goss Family
““We had planned to give a gift when we sold our property,
because our family has benefitted from the excellent healthcare
provided in Sidney for many years. We didn’t realize that the
actual ‘cost’ of a gift of property (vs. selling it and giving a gift of
the cash proceeds) could be so minimal.” -- Bob Goss

Volunteerism
Sidney Health Center Employee
Pledge Campaign raises $54,000
By Libby Berndt, Foundation Board Director
Opportunities come along in a person’s life every
so often. Sometimes we grab a hold of them and
other times we ignore them. But I guess it matters what you consider an opportunity. Some may
disagree but when I hear the word opportunity,
the next word that comes to mind is volunteerism.
The two go hand in hand.
Volunteering is doing something charitable or
helpful without expecting anything in return, and
that is true. But the difference of expecting something and receiving something is what makes
being a volunteer so amazing.
As a board member of the Foundation for
Community Care, it has given me opportunities
I never would have had - being able to bring a
state-of-the-art cancer center to Sidney; provid-
ing thousands of dollars for health care needs
through our endowment program; and most
importantly making a difference in our communities to keep quality health care services available.
Richland County is known for its volunteering
spirit through its many service organizations,
boards, churches, and more. It’s time for each
of us to lead by example, get involved and keep
Richland County the community we love.
Hard work can lead a person down unexpected
paths and opportunities you never knew existed.
It can happen to anyone, just remember to
volunteer.

Over the next 10 years, Montanans will transfer billions of dollars to the next generation. It’s estimated that by 2020,
$12 billion will pass from one generation to the next. The question is whether any of that wealth will stay behind in the

The 7th Annual (Best Kept Secret) Bra Auction
By Troy Barnett, Richland County Cancer Coalition Program Coordinator
I have cancer; I understand some of what happens when a
person is diagnosed with cancer, I get that. What I didn’t get
until Friday, April 27th was the Bra Auction.
When I started at the Richland County Health Department
and was told part of my job would involve assembling the
Cancer Coalition for a decision on how to proceed in regards
to the annual Bra Auction, I did not understand the importance of the event, I didn’t get it. The Bra Auction is a traditional event in Sidney, however, we had lost our venue, the
Triangle, and we had also lost time and some key experienced leaders. I started in December and while I have business knowledge being new to Sidney, I didn’t have the essential who’s who familiarity. At the start of the New Year the
Cancer Coalition assembled, I told everyone up front about
my cancer and my limitations without hesitation, the Coalition
agreed to have the Bra Auction. In that meeting were women
of talent, courage and resolve. I knew that this event, transcended the Coalition, but was it that big of a deal?
In a word, yes, much like being diagnosed with and fighting cancer is a big deal. I finally understand, minutely, more
about the fortitude and determination I see in the eyes of the
women that lend their strength to the Cancer Coalition. The
Bra Auction might not be in the comfort zone of all of the
Coalition members, but battling cancer is expensive and I
have not met a victim of the Big C who would say any part of
it is in their comfort zone. The Cancer Coalition members
know this; some of them have personal battle stories, it fuels
our collective courage for the combat. As a Coalition we will
go to where people assemble, and we will fight the good fight
with dignity and finesse, think the swashbuckler, Errol Flynn,
in drag. Hence, the Bra Auction, fighting on our terms the
weapon of choice, female undergarments; flirty, fun, tough,
fearsome, sarcastic, in memory of the valiant fallen and those
who claimed victory… brassieres, it is a part of what the
Cancer Coalition does, and does well.
The Cancer Coalition’s, 7th Annual Bra Auction raised over
$65,000.00 for Phase II of the Sidney Cancer Center. The
2012 Foundation for Community Care
Scholars Announced
The Foundation for Community Care is
pleased to announce the recipients of
the 2012 Healthcare Scholarships. The
scholarship program was established to
provide Richland County and rural Eastern
Montana with a continuing source of highly
qualified healthcare personnel.
The Richland County Cancer Coalition donated $65,407 to Phase II of
the Sidney Health Center Cancer Care Campaign. Pictured left to right

official Coalition goal is to back the practical statewide agenda in reducing the burden of cancer by supporting access to
quality care. The money raised does that in the most sterile
sense but those that joined the event that Friday understand
at the heart of the words is the action of lifting another’s burden.
En guard cancer!

Foundation for Community Care
awards $229,543.74 in grants
In 1983, the Foundation for Community Care was organized
to prepare for the future of healthcare in Richland county
and surrounding areas. An endowment fund was established, and each year, some of the earnings from the endowment fund are distributed for local healthcare needs.
In 2011, the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department purchased
rescue/extrication equipment made possible by the endowment fund of the Foundation for Community Care. The
purchase of the equipment allows the Fire Department to
reduce the time it takes to free patients in need. This additional equipment allows for more than one tool to be used
at a time greatly improving the chances of a patient’s full
recovery. Larry Christensen, Chief, Sidney Fire Department
states, “Thanks to the generosity of the Foundation for
Community Care, Richland County and it’s visitors are all
safer.
The Foundation Endowment Grants are awarded with the
intent of enhancing the medical and healthcare services in
our region. The funds will purchase new medical equipment, provide educational materials and support efforts to
improve overall community wellness. Area projects funded

2012 Walking to Wellness
Fitness goals often are a part of each person’s New Year
Resolutions. Though January has come and gone, it is not
too late to set a personal fitness goal this year.
September 22nd, 2012 marks the fourth year for Richland
County’s Walking to Wellness event. Walking to Wellness is
a low key event designed to encourage the novice or casual
athlete to train for a challenging but attainable fitness goal—
walking or running a half marathon or an alternate shorter
distance such as a 5K or 10K. Any long term goal must
have a systematic approach for achievement.
The Foundation for Community Care sponsors this annual
event to promote healthy living and a wholesome lifestyle.
The building blocks for preparing for a ½ marathon is exercise, good nutrition and the right equipment. To get started,
it is advised to build a baseline activity level of walking 7 to 8
miles weekly. The objective of marathon training is to condition your body and mind to run/walk the long road. The only
equipment needed is a good pair of running shoes; but, it
also helps to have a walking buddy.
Update Childbirth education materials: $1,000.00
Pyxsis Automated Medication Dispenser, Pharmacy:
$119,570.00
For more information on this year’s event, call or stop by the
Foundation for Community Care at 406-488-1173, 221 2nd
Street NW, Sidney, MT.
For a full description of the grants awarded, please visit our
website www.foundationforcommunitycare.org.
While walking or running the half marathon is the end goal,
the real health benefit will come from the time (and miles!)
that you put into training. Get your shoes on and “Walk to
Wellness!”

Sidney Health Center Emergency Department
“The bladder scanner is available for use 24/7/365 in Sidney
Health Center’s Emergency Department. This instrument
assists in providing timely care for patients who may have
urinary retention. Because it is non-invasive, it helps prevent
urinary tract infections that can occur with utilizing catheters to
measure urinary retention. Up to 5,500 individuals will benefit
from this new equipment from the Foundation for Community
Care.”
~ Nancy Dynneson, RN, Clinical Services Administrator
The Matthew House:
“The Matthew House Shelter relies on donations from the
community to help keep its doors open to families in crisis.
The Foundation for Community Care’s grant has helped
Matthew House to provide a more safe and secure place for
those in need. Thank you for your caring donation!”
