Introduction
Based in the picturesque Cotswold town of Tetbury, Gloucestershire (100 miles West
of London), Modern World Studios offers everything you will need from a high-end
residential recording studio at an affordable rate. Designed by world leader White
Mark Ltd our 3000 sq ft warehouse offers the first commercially available SSL
Duality desk to be installed in the UK, Exigy stereo and 5.1 monitoring, two live
rooms, extensive outboard and plug-in range, huge microphone and instrument
collection, dvd projector and screen, editing suite and well equipped client lounge.
Whatever your genre: classical to rock, voice-over to dance, single track to album,
demo to full 5.1 movie post-production, our zero compromise approach has resulted
in a studio that quite simply needs to be experienced to be believed. Our facility is
large enough to cater for a small orchestra and can sleep up to 14.

Main Live Room
Fully air-conditioned 460 sq ft (43 sq mts) of open plan recording space. Natural
daylight is provided by windows and overhead skylights, whilst mood lighting is also
available. The room’s large size, oak flooring, oak diffusers (16 in total), fabric walls
and 4m ceiling height ensure accurate recordings for everything from vocals, strings
to live band recordings. Acoustic screens provide separation for live recordings. We
have provided a full 8 channel Aviom mixing system for perfect headphone balance
whilst recording. Loudspeaker foldback is via Quested S8’s. Additionally, there is a
viewing gallery from the client lounge.
Drum Room:
For a livelier sound, we also have our Drum Room, a fully air-conditioned 320 sq ft
(25.5 sq mts) recording space for the BIG drum sound. Diffusion is provided using 8
ASC Tube Traps. A full 8 channel Aviom mixing system is provided for perfect
headphone balance whilst recording, and additional video signal to control room for
complete communication.

Control Room
Fully air-conditioned control room (19 sq mts) houses the first SSL Duality console
installed in a UK commercial studio including the SSL Bantam patchbay option. The
Duality combines the sonic edge of analogue audio with immediate visual feedback
and total DAW control including 5.1 surround mixing and Total Recall.
Additionally, there is a large collection of outboard including Audient Sumo, Bricasti,
Chandler, Cranesong, Empirical Labs, Neve, Purple Audio, RND Portico, Thermionic
Culture Vulture, TRP, Universal Audio (see ‘Equipment list’ below.)
The main stereo and 5.1 surround monitoring is provided by Exigy, custom built by
Matt Dobson (Grand Central, Shoe Factory and Kore.)
A choice of nearfields includes AE 22's, Quested S7's and Yamaha NS10S
Additionally, there is a projector, White Mark acoustic screen and dvd player.

The client lounge is located on the second floor and provides a comfortable naturally
lit environment in which to relax, ensuring that whatever the duration of your project
you will have everything you need to kick back and take it easy.

Equipment
The SSL Duality
Duality is a large format music console like no other. It is a console that carries the
DNA of the SSL E, G & K Series that through the decades have defined and redefined
what a music console should be. Duality takes the evolution into its next great leap
forward by splicing the Digital Audio Workstation control and integration concepts of
the AWS 900+ and all of the visual feedback advantages of the TFT displays from
our C Series digital consoles into our analogue DNA.
Duality is the best of everything, an incredible powerhouse of possibilities. It
combines the sonic edge of analogue audio with ‘at a glance’ visual feedback and
total DAW control right from the heart of the console… yet all that power is
comfortable, familiar and inspiring to use.

SSL Duality: Features
* Dual Mic Pre’s – In addition to the pristine, ultra clean sound of the XL 9000 K
SuperAnalogue™ Mic pre, each channel features a VHD™ mic pre. The unique
‘Variable Harmonic Drive’ circuitry introduces controlled distortion of either second
or third harmonic, providing variable valve-type warmth or transistor-type distortion
on every channel. SSL’s renowned SuperAnalogue circuit design uses revolutionary
DC coupled, capacitor free circuitry to provide the holy grail of ultra-wide and flat
frequency response, extremely low distortion and an exceptionally low noise floor.
This bus and channel signal processing technology is coupled with the VHD
(Variable Harmonic Drive) circuitry to add colour to this wonderful ‘straight wire’
performance and warm up digital signals, bringing the soul of early analogue
recordings to 21st century production technology.
* ‘Split Signal Flow Architecture’ – A new approach to signal flow that
supercedes the in-line concept and enables channel processing resources to be placed
in the input or monitor path. This means any desired combination of analogue channel
processing can be used in conjunction with the DAW record path, whilst monitoring
the rest of the signal path through the console remains extremely simple. Central soft
switch assignment of channel processing (EQ/dynamics) is available on one, many or
all channels, recallable via ‘Instant Reset’. Use of central click-free electronic soft
switching delivers improved operational flexibility and significantly reduces longterm maintenance.
* Comprehensive Surround – Duality features the most comprehensive and
powerful 5.1 panning ever offered as standard on an analogue console. Every channel
includes dedicated controls for LR/LCR, divergence, front/rear position & LFE level.
Duality features four 5.1 stem busses in addition to the main 5.1 bus, a facility that
usually requires heavy modification to accomplish in an analogue console. Duality
also features a versatile 5.1 master bus compressor with a selection of average or peak
channel sensing side-chain control.

* Workstation Control – A high-resolution, digitally controlled gain element in
each channel allows the motorized faders to be switched to control any DAW that
supports the HUI or Mackie Control protocols, while retaining the analogue signal
path. Duality features largeformat, high-quality, high-resolution faders that bring true
precision to DAW control. The faders and their associated Channel Rotary Encoders
provide direct control of DAW plug-ins, faders, pans, sends, input and output routing.
* Constant Visual Feedback – Large TFT displays across all channels and centre
section deliver unprecedented visual feedback on input source, signal level, output
routing, DAW status, processing order, channel routing and split channel architecture.
A new Eyeconix feature offers the ability to use icons and images as track markers for
simple, at a glance identification of track source. Display of Total Recall™ settings
on large TFT displays across the meter bridge for all channels and center section
enables several operators to work simultaneously to recall analogue settings in a
fraction of the time previously required.
* Session Management – Studio browser session management software provides
one-stop external archiving and retrieval of automation and Total Recall data. Here,
users can also load custom images into the Eyeconix library.
* Green - Power consumption has been reduced by 50%, so the power supplies can
be built into the console, eliminating the need for a separate air conditioned machine
room, cutting the bottom line and helping protect our environment.

Where necessary we have marked some gear with an *, we would ask that permission
be sought before use of these items, as some are owned by individual engineers.
Our Yamaha piano is freely available for use. We pass the cost of tuning this on to clients.
Our local piano tuner John Bolton (Tel. 07791045081) has a standard rate of £45.00.
Any modifications to studio equipment must be done with permission and at clients expense.
This includes new strings, drumskins etc.

ACCOMMODATION
Clients can stay in our highly appointed Studio Flat located adjacent to the studio.
The Studio Flat is £15 (ex vat) per person per night.
The Flat has 3 double bedrooms that can sleep up to 6 people, a dormitory which
sleeps 4 people and a single bedroom. Additionally, there are two sofa beds located in
the lounge. The Flat has a highly appointed lounge including surround sound cinema,
plasma tv, sky and dvd player. Additionally, the flat is heated and has a kitchen
(including washing machine, microwave, fridge etc), dining table for 8, and
bathroom. The facility is located 100 mts from the Studio.
Alternatively, there is a huge choice of places to stay in the local area. We are happy
to help make arrangements for any visit and have several deals in place with fantastic
Tetbury B&Bs and hotels.

Modern World Studios Restaurant
Modern World Studios clients have a choice regarding catering:
i) Our Restaurant. Modern World serves an optional fully prepared three meal
catering service for a fee of £25.00 (ex vat) per person. Food is served at our clients’
convenience, and consists of:
Breakfast: Croissants, Orange Juice and Coffee
Lunch: Pasta or Jacket Potato with a choice of filling
Dinner: Plat du jour with a choice of dishes.
One of the following dishes will be served for dinner:
Shepherds Pie with Petit Pois
Steak and Kidney Pie with Mixed Vegetables
Meat Lasagne with Petit Pois
Vegetables Lasagne with Petit Pois
Thai Green Curry and Basmati Rice
Chilli con carne and basmati rice
Fish Pie served with Petit Pois
ii) Self Catering: Clients are welcome to self cater. Tetbury has a number of shops
including a local Tescos and take-aways if clients would prefer to care for themselves.
