Hatlapa SAFEMATIC according to the classification societies 1. According to SOLAS (Safety of life at sea) and the rules from the classification societies every ship has to be equipped with a main- and auxiliary steering gear. An auxiliary st/gear is not required: I. Where the main st/gear comprises two or more identical power units and II. a single failure in the main st/gear piping system or in one of the power units the defect can be isolated so that the capability can be maintained or speedily regained. All Hatlapa steering gears (Poseidon, Neptune, Triton) have got two or more identical power units and the piping and power units can be isolated. 2. The steering gear must have the capability: I. To move the rudder from 35° on one side to 35° on the other side with the deepest seagoing draught and running ahead with max. service speed. II. To move the rudder from 35° on either side to 30° on the other side in not more than 28 s. a. At passenger vessels with one pump unit. b. At cargo vessels with two/ all power units. 3. Additional requirements I. Every tanker, chemical tanker or gas carrier of 10.000 gt (gross tonnage) and upwards and in every other ship of 70.000 gt (e.g. Bulker, Passenger vessels, etc. ) and upwards, the main steering gear shall comprise two or more identical power units acc. to item 2. II. Every tanker, chemical tanker or gas carrier of 10.000 gt (gross tonnage) and upwards shall comply the following: a. The main steering gear is to be arranged that in the event of loss of the steering gear capability due to a single failure in any part of the power actuating systems (excluding the tiller or components serving the same purpose) the steering capability is to be regained in less than 45 s. b. Two separate and independent power units, c. Loss of hydraulic fluid from one system is to be capable of being detected and the defective system automatically isolated, so that the other system remain fully operational. 1/2 Uetersener Maschinenfabrik GmbH & Co. Every tanker, chemical tanker or gas carrier of 10.000 gt (gross tonnage) and upwards Tankers, chemical tankers or gas carrier of 10.000 gt but less than 100.000 gt a. The main steering gear is to be arranged that in the event of loss of the steering gear capability due to a single failure in any part of the power actuating systems (excluding the tiller or components serving the same purpose) the steering capability is to be regained in less than 45 s and b. Where the steering gear is existing only from a single rudder actuator, special consideration is given to a stress analysis of the pressure retaining parts. This is the housing at a rotary vane steering gear. All classification societies are using higher safety factor for the material, so that the working pressure must be reduced. This article is a summary from the rules of different classification societies and SOLAS about the additional requirements for tanker, chemical tanker or gas carrier.
