Lage /Location
Boston (Fläche: 232 Quadratkilometer) liegt im Nordosten
der USA an der Massachusetts
Bay, deren Zergliederung
die Anlage natürlicher Häfen
ermöglichte. Die Flüsse Mystic
River, Neponset River und
Charles River durchschneiden
bzw. begrenzen die Stadt.

of some 232 square kilometres, is
located in the north-east of the
USA. It stands on Massachusetts
Bay, which provided a natural
harbour for the original settlement. Three rivers – the Mystic,
the Neponset and the Charles –
flow into the Bay at this point.

In a nutshell
Boston zählt rund 650 000 Einwohner und ist für amerikanische Verhältnisse schon fast kleinstädtisch. Die Metropolregion Greater Boston, zu der Gemeinden wie Cambridge, Brookline, Quincy und Somerville gehören, hat
rund 4,4 Millionen Einwohner. Die Stadt kann man

Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) betrieben. Bis vor
wenigen Jahren wurde die Innenstadt Bostons von Autobahnen durchschnitten. Mit dem Big Dig, einem der aufwendigsten Tiefbauprojekte der Welt, wurden 2007 die
Stadtautobahnen in Tunnel unter die Erde verlegt. Damit
hat sich nicht nur das Stadtbild verschönert, sondern
auch Viertel, die vorher vom Zentrum abgeschnitten
­waren, wurden dadurch in die Stadt integriert. Seit ein
paar Jahren knistert es in Vierteln wie South End und Fort
Point geradezu vor Energie. Überall spriessen neue Geschäfte, Lokale und Ateliers aus dem Boden.
The city of Boston has a population of around 650,000 – almost town size by American standards. The Greater Boston
area, which includes the neighbouring municipalities of
Cambridge, Brookline, Quincy and Somerville, has around
4.4 million inhabitants. Most of Boston can be easily explored
on foot. Taxis are also reasonably priced. The public transport
is operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA). Up until a few years ago, the centre of Boston was
criss-crossed by freeways. But the Big Dig – one of the world’s
biggest-ever tunnelling projects – saw these roads rerouted
underground. The project, which was completed in 2007, has
not only greatly improved the city’s looks; it has also reintegrated neighbourhoods that had previously been cut off from
the downtown area. Districts like South End and Fort Point
have been bursting with energy for some years now, with new
shops, restaurants and studios opening all over.

there with ingredients such
as thyme or truffles to give a new
dimension to his dishes. The end
result is staggeringly good.
