Task: First read the text about Georgina’s job as a sculptor at Madame Tussauds. Then read the sentence beginnings (1 - 7) and tick the correct ending (a - d). Only one answer is correct. There is an example (0) at the beginning. Quelle Foto: http://commons.wikimedia.org; Halfalah So you think you want my job? Name: Georgina Power Age: 29 From: South London Job: Madame Tussauds Sculptor A typical day I leave for the studio around 8am. Once I’m there, my first job is always making tea and toast before I start sculpting! I joined Merlin Magic Making (the company that supplies all Madame Tussauds waxworks) six years ago after doing a BA1 in technical arts. I landed a junior role and worked my way up. The process of making a wax figure is incredibly complex. Celebrities constantly change their style, but we work to a brief2 about which look we’re recreating. Sometimes I have to work from video footage but generally I get to meet the celebrity. I’ve met all sorts, from Lewis Hamilton to Helen Mirren and Snoop Dogg! When we made One Direction, I sculpted Louis [Tomlinson], which was amazing. I was given two sittings – the first was just me, the photographer and Louis, and the second was with the band. During a sculpt, the celebrity poses on a turntable that rotates 16 times, so we can see them from all angles. We aim to get 250 measurements and photos, and take hair samples with us to ensure every single detail is spot on. Actors and singers usually find it easiest to hold an expression – although Tom Daley did an amazing headstand! Each figure has a head sculptor and a body sculptor, and I work mainly on heads. When the hair and colouring begin, that’s when the model starts to come alive – it’s magical – although each hair has to be painstakingly inserted one by one (including eyebrows and eyelashes). It takes me about five weeks just to mould one head and each figure costs £150,000, so we have to take care moving them. Finally our design team sets up the area the public see when they visit – music and lighting to bring the figures to life. On a good day, I’ll finish at about 6pm and go for drinks with friends, but if I’m ꞌin the zoneꞌ, I find it hard to leave! The good The response when people see their figure – or when fans meet their “idols”. It’s so rewarding. The bad It can be tiring. And as a perfectionist I’m never satisfied, which can be frustrating. 8 Still interested? Qualifications You don’t need a specific degree or qualification to be a sculptor – a job like this is more about talent and creativity. Salary Salaries in this industry tend to be top secret, but if you’re thinking of a career in sculpting, visit Merlincareers.com for more information. Key skills I’d say be passionate, pay attention to detail and stay calm. It’s only clay – don’t let it worry you!
