Decide which of the statements is correct. Put a tick ( ) next to the correct statement on your answer sheet. There is only one correct statement for each number. Why do an increasing number of teens – girls and, believe it or not, also boys – risk their health to go under the knife? “It was my dream come true,” says Jodie, 19, a cook from Brighton, England. Jodie wanted a flat stomach like her idol Anastasia so badly that she happily agreed to be a guinea pig for a cosmetic surgery clinic. She underwent 27 injections of a drug called Lipostabil, which is believed to ‘eat away’ fat. Afterwards, Jodie was left swollen and bruised. But has the pain made Jodie afraid of surgery? No: “I am so happy with the result,” she says, and she adds that pain is the price she pays for beauty. “I had my eyebrows tattooed three months ago. It cost £300 (€420) and was agonising.” But it doesn’t stop there. Jodie has more on her surgery shopping list. Jodie’s case may be extreme, but she isn’t alone. In a new survey of British teenage girls, 42 per cent have considered plastic surgery. A number of these girls, whose average age is 14, have even started saving money for surgery. In the U.S., 326,233 cosmetic operations were performed on teens in 2004, nearly 900 operations a day! HEARTLESS MEDIA Some people say that magazines are the reason why more and more teenagers have plastic surgery. Chantelle Horton, who used to work as an editor for Bliss magazine, agrees that all the perfect-looking celebrities make young girls feel self-conscious about their own normal “lumpy bumpy” bodies. The problem is that not all of these celebrities really have perfect bodies. It is well known that magazines often ‘air brush’ photos of the rich and famous to make them seem absolutely perfect to their readers. More than half of the British girls who were interviewed by Bliss were worried they would never look like their female role models. But how could they? And TV programmes such as I Want a Famous Face and Plastic Surgery Live only make things worse. Ron Rohrich, president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, criticises that these shows make insecure teens believe that they can have the perfect body through surgery. PEER POWER The media has also influenced the picture some boys have of their ideal girl. “Girls feel pressure from boys who expect their girlfriends to resemble the perfect celebrity-body model,” says Chantelle Horton. Jodie also claims that boys have made fun of her body, which made her very insecure. She sees surgery as a way to help her feel better about herself. Dr Rohrich warns, “To believe that surgery can change who you are only leads to disappointment.” NOT JUST FOR GIRLS How long will it be before teenage boys start to see cosmetic surgery as a way to feel better about themselves, just like Jodie does? A survey of 2000 teenage boys by Sneak magazine shows that they worry about their bodies as much as teenage girls do and wish they had David Beckham’s six-pack or Brad Pitt’s smile. Just 13 per cent are happy with their bodies, while 26 per cent say that they would think about cosmetic surgery. The survey shows that young boys are worried about impressing girls. It also shows that those boys who feel good about their bodies feel good about themselves. Around 84 per cent believe that a better body would make their life better. They say that pressure from girls (42 per cent), celebrity pictures (28 per cent) and comments from other boys (24 per cent) have made them lose their self-confidence. The survey also says that more and more boys are buying beauty products because they are taking more interest in their looks. Pat Spungin, the founder of www.raisingkids.co.uk, a website for parents, says that in the past boys did not worry so much about their looks. But because of football stars such as David Beckham, things have changed. In the past he would have been loved for his talent. Now it is not enough just to be an excellent footballer. You have to be an excellent and good-looking footballer. __________________________________________________________________________________ Seite 6 von 16 Mittlerer Schulabschluss 2006, schriftliche Prüfung Englisch Aufgaben 16 To lose fat Jodie A B C D went to 27 different doctors. tried the drug Lipostabil. paid £300. both B+C 17 Jodie says that she A B C D wants to have her eyebrows tattooed next. did not feel any pain after the cosmetic surgery. does not want to have any more cosmetic surgery. likes the result of the cosmetic surgery. 18 Statistics show that A B D 42 per cent of British girls are thinking of having plastic surgery. in 2004 there were nearly 900 operations on American teenagers every day. a lot of the British teenage girls are saving money to pay for cosmetic surgery. all of them (A+B+C) A B C D magazines show teenage girls with imperfect bodies. magazines show famous people with perfect bodies. both A+B TV shows criticise teens with imperfect bodies.
