Am 17. November 2012 informierte uns ein US-Schütze
über diesen Revolver. Zusammen mit Marshal #12243
(fortlaufende Seriennummer) hatte er ihn bereits 1993
erworben und fügte hinzu: “Der Vorbesitzer erwähnte
(1993), dass er ihn von einem kalifornischen Verkäufer
bekam.“
November 17, 2012 this specimen was brought to our
attention by an US shooter. He had liberated her already 1993 together with consecutively numbered Marshal #12243 and adds: “The fellow I got it from (1993)
claimed he got them both from a sales rep. here in the
States in the California area.”

eine Stelle über dem RNMA, also
fortlaufende Seriennummern, ebenfalls weißfertig mit kannelierter Trommel, ohne Laufbeschriftung und Lütticher Abnahmestempel auf der Trommel, komplett nummerngleich, auch

Lauf.“
“Er erwähnte wohl, dass sie auf Sonderbestellung geliefert wurden. Leider
verkaufte ich den Marshal.“
“Beide waren damals ungeschossen.
Meiner ist es noch heute. Das Timing ist perfekt, sehr
gut ausbalanciert. Den RNMA wollte ich immer einmal
schießen, aber irgendetwas hielt mich zurück. Ich dachte, dies ist eine besondere Waffe.“

this one (higher), in other words consecutive, and it was in the white also
with full fluted cylinder but no legend
on top of the barrel and no Liege proof
mark on the cylinder, all serial numbers matched, otherwise identical to
this one except the shorter barrel.”
“I think I remember him saying they
were special ordered. I am sorry I got
rid of the Marshal.”
“Both were unfired when I got them.
Mine is still unfired.”
“Timing on mine is perfect and balance is very good. I
have always been tempted to fire the RNMA but something has always held me back thinking it was special.”

Bis zum 16. November 2012 gingen wir davon aus,
dass 6. Variation RNMA’s und Marshals nur in Europa
zu kaufen waren. Hier ist ein Hinweis, dass sie gegen
Sonderbestellung in den USA verfügbar waren!
#12106 RNMA 1. Variation, 2. Subvariation:
Gunfire FROCS #76 stellte im Januar 2013 den Umbau
seines hübschen Centaure-Revolverkarabiners fertig.
Inspiriert wurde diese Arbeit durch Fotos auf einer französischen Schwarzpulver-Website. Dort wurde vor einigen Jahren ein ähnlicher Umbau vorgestellt.
Der Anschlagschaft stammt vermutlich ursprünglich von
einem Uberti-Revolverkarabiner. Gunfire fand ihn an
einem HS121 Texas Scout Peacemaker, Kaliber 9 mm
Knall.
Die Passung vom Anschlagschaft an den CentaureRahmen sieht gut aus, was leider nicht für die Passungen des Kopplungsstücks an das Holz des Anschlagschafts gilt. Lässt hier die Italienische Qualitätskontrolle
grüßen?

Until November 16, 2012 we were led to believe that 6
variation RNMAs and Marshals were available in Europe only. Here is an indication that they could be had
in the USA on special order!
#12106 RNMA 1st variation 2nd sub-variation: In
January 2013 Gunfire FROCS #76 completed the alteration into this sweet little Centaure revolving pistol carbine. He got inspired by the pictures of a similar job
found on a French black powder website a few years
back.
The shoulder stock was probably originally attached to
an Uberti revolving carbine pistol. Gunfire found it fixed
to a HS121 Texas Scout Peacemaker in 9 mm blank
cal.
The fit of the shoulder stock to the Centaure frame
looks quite OK which cannot be said, unfortunately,
about the fit of the yoke to the wood of the shoulder
stock. Is this what we call the Italian quality control?

Natürlich wurde die Auktion mit großem Interesse verfolgt. Über Texas kam der Centaure nach Deutschland.

Die Fakten lt. Händler-Interview:
 Angeboten wurden Waffe und Extra-Trommel für
den Erstbesitzer, der sie “vor Jahrzehnten“ erwarb.
Der Revolver erscheint ungeschossen aber heftig
bespielt. Die Bunthärtung von Rahmen und Hammer wurde weitestgehend abgeschliffen, der Holzgriff “bearbeitet“ und lackiert.
 Laufbeschriftung: “1960 NEW MODEL ARMY“
CENTENNIAL TRADE MARK
 Inspektorenzeichen *U auf Lauf, Rahmen und kannelierter Trommel. Die glatte Trommel ziert nur der
Lütticher Abnahmestempel.
 “382“ ist die Rückseite der kannelierten Trommel
gestempelt. Die glatte wurde zu einem späteren
Zeitpunkt ohne Nummern erworben und “6382“
nachgestempelt.
 Keine Einfräsung im Griffrücken für den Anschlagschaft, im Gegensatz zu den bisher bekannten
RNMA’s 4. Variation, die nur im Seriennummernbereich #11788 bis #12958 von 1971/72 bekannt sind.

1967 production. A rebated, plain extra cylinder was
also part of the package.
The facts from the interview with the dealer:
 Pistol and extra cylinder were offered on behalf of
the first owner. He had purchased them “decades
ago“. The revolver seems to be unfired but played
with a lot. The case colors of the frame and hammer were removed some. The wooden grip were
worked on and varnished.
 Barrel marking: “1960 NEW MODEL ARMY“ CENTENNIAL TRADE MARK
 Inspector marks *U on barrel lug, frame and fluted
cylinder. On the rebated plain cylinder is the Liége
proof mark only.
 “382“ was found stamped on the breech side of the
fluted cylinder. The plain one was purchased at a
later date without serial numbers. It was later
marked “6383“outside of the factory.
 No toe on the butt for the shoulder stock which is in

contrast to currently recorded 4 variation RNMAs.
The latter are only known in the serial number
range #11788 to #12958 from 1971/72.
 No serial number was found on the hammer. The
grip assembly was not removed by the dealer to
avoid marring of the screws.

Seriennummer, fehlende Einfräsung im Griffstück, Laufbeschriftung, Inspektorenzeichen etc. passen zum Herstellungszeitraum 1967.
Bisher unbekannt sind vor 1971 hergestellte brünierte
und buntgehärtete RNMA‘s mit kannelierter Trommel

Deshalb gingen wir bisher davon aus, dass es die
RNMA’s 4. Variation nur mit Einfräsung im Griffstück
What variant of a Centaure do we have here?
Serial number, the lack of the toe on the butt, barrel
marking, inspector marks etc. would confirm the manufacturing during 1967.
To this date no blued/case colored RNMAs with fluted
cylinders and without toe on the butt were known that
were actually made before1971.

Consequently we were led to believe that 4 variation
RNMAs were only made with toe on butt. But certainly

Subvariation bezeichnet.

am 15.05.2013 wurde dieser RNMA aus 1972er Fertigung aus den USA gemeldet.

in May 15, 2013 this RNMA of 1972 production was
reported from the USA.

Es handelt sich um das bisher einzige Exemplar dieser
seltenen Variante, das außerhalb Europas entdeckt
wurde. Nach dem HARLOS-Importeur-Stempel wurde
sie in Deutschland erworben aber später in die USA
verbracht. Der glückliche Käufer fand sie bei einem
Garagenverkauf.

As of today this is the only specimen of this rare variant
found outside of Europe. The HARLOS importer stamp
is evidence that she was purchased in Germany but
brought to the US afterwards at one point of her life.
The lucky buyer could liberate her at a garage sale.

Verdeckt auf dem Holz unter der Schaftkappe sind die
Seriennummer 882 ohne F und die Identifikationsnummer 22 geschrieben, dazu das Zeichen SILE des Italienischen Herstellers des Anschlagschafts blind eingeschlagen. 882 ist auch ins Kupplungsstück eingekratzt.
The serial number 882 without F-prefix and the assembly number 22 are hidden. They are penciled on the
wood under the butt plate, as is the stamp of Italian
stock maker SILE. 882 is scratched also into the inside

Er erwarb ihn 1974 bei einem Händler in Basel/Schweiz.
Dieser Marshal hat die üblichen Stempelungen und 7

# Gravierter RNMA #1299 1. Variation, 2. # Engraved RNMA #1299 1st variation 2nd
Subvariation: wurde von FROCS #101 SLTM1 aka sub-variation: was liberated by FROCS #101
Thumper, USA, Ende 2012 befreit. Zu dem Zeitpunkt
hatte ein Vorbesitzer bereits Brünierung und Bunthärtung entfernt. Dies inspirierte SLTM1, das gute Stück
von Charles L. Starks gravieren zu lassen.
Hier sind einige Kommentare von Starks:
“Beiliegend einige Fotos in hoher Auflösung von
Centaure #1299, den ich gerade graviere. Ich hoffe, die
Auflösung ist ausreichend oder mindestens bearbeitbar,
denn ein Fotograf bin ich nicht.“
“Wie gewünscht, ist hier eine kurze Beschreibung. Lassen Sie mich bitte wissen, wenn Sie weitere Informationen oder Fotos benötigen. Ich werde mich dann so
schnell wie möglich darum kümmern.“
“Per heute benötige ich sicher noch mindestens einen
weiteren Monat bis zur Fertigstellung. Dann sende ich
Fotos des zusammengebauten Centaure.“
Dies ist nun der Stand der Arbeit am 1. April 2013:
SLTM1 aka Thumper, USA towards the end of 2012. At
that time one previous owner had already removed
bluing and case colors. In return this inspired SLTM1 to
have the piece custom engraved by Charles L. Starks.
Below are some comments of Starks:
“I have enclosed some high photos of Centaure #1299
of which I am currently engraving. I hope the quality is
of proper resolution and at least workable quality, a
photographer I am not.”
“The following is a short write up, as requested. If any
additional information or photos are felt to be needed
please let me know and I’ll do my best to comply as
quickly as possible.”
Currently I don’t expect to have the project completed
for at least another month, at which time I will send you
photos of the reassembled Centaure.”
Here is what we have on April 1, 2013:
”Im Dezember 2012 wurde ich gebeten, Centaure
#1299 zu gravieren. Der Besitzer wünschte sich etwas
anderes als die normalen Colt-Gravuren, die man heute
so oft sieht …”
“Das war eine mächtige Herausforderung für mich,
denn ich graviere erst seit wenigen Jahren.“
“Nach anfänglichem Zögern machte ich mich trotzdem
an diese Aufgabe, begann die Projektplanung und gravierte den ersten Teil im Februar d. J.
“Die Arbeit ist noch lange nicht abgeschlossen. Am
Ende sollen auch Trommel, Ladepresse und Hammer
graviert sein.“
“Grundidee meiner Gravur ist der rosa Trompetenwein,
hier reliefartig und mit punziertem Hintergrund.“
“Außerdem entschloss ich mich, das Muster nicht spiegelbildlich anzulegen. Oder andersherum, was Sie auf
der rechten Seite sehen, ist nicht identisch mit dem,
was Sie links sehen.“
“Somit mag das Muster auf der einen Seite eine blühende Blume zeigen, auf der anderen jedoch die gleiche Blume von unten.“
“Damit hoffe ich ein einzigartiges, aber auch angenehm
anzuschauendes Design zu realisieren, das gleichzeitig
nicht überdominant erscheint.“
“Einige Gedanken zum Centaure, für diejenigen, die ein
ähnliches Projekt übernehmen möchten. Bisher bin ich
sehr beeindruckt“
“Solange das Werkzeug sehr scharf gehalten wird, lässt

also carry engraving.”
“The base for my design is the trumpet vine which in
this case I have backed with relief and beaded backgrounds.”
“I also have chosen not to reverse image the design. In
other words what you see on the right hand side is not
what you see on the left.”
“The result is that what the pattern may show a flower
in bloom on one side, on the opposing side that same
flower is shown from the underside.”
“Thus my hope is that I have achieved a design that is
both unique and pleasing to the eye, yet not over bearing.”
“Some thoughts on the Centaure itself, for those who
may be interested in taking on such a project. To date I
have been very impressed.”
“The steel cuts well as long as ones tooling is very

hat’s Spaß gemacht, diesen Centaure zu bearbeiten.“
“Ich hoffe deshalb, dass er Euch so gefällt, wie er mir.“

begin to plow or cut poorly, with the Centaure, you get
no such advance warning. It will simply snap the cutting
edge or blow out the beadier leaving you to completely
re-work the geometry of the graver or rebuild and face
the beadier.”
Thus I have found a need to double my normal sharpening practices.”
“Overall, while trying at times, I have greatly enjoyed
the opportunity to work on this Centaure.”
“I sincerely hope you all enjoy it as much as I have.”
Am 21. April 2013 war’s geschafft! Die pure Eleganz –

ist abgeschlossen und das Ergebnis ist … bildet Euch
selbst eine Meinung!“
“Vergesst das Handtuch nicht, damit Ihr Euren Sabber
von der Tastatur wischen könnt! Ich fühle mich geehrt,
solch ein Schmuckstück besitzen zu dürfen. Es belegt
einmal wieder (gegenüber meiner Frau) mein reines
Karma, m muss wohl mit Mutter Teresa verwandt sein!“
“Ernsthaft, die Bilder werden dieser Handwerksarbeit
nicht gerecht und “Es leuchtet wirklich“ wie Charlton
Heston im Film THE MOUNTAIN MEN sagte!“

a FAUL nipple wrench, powder flask and sterling silver
cap box (Dixon), and a Euroarms bullet mold.
Die Gravur wurde im Stil der Coltgravuren des 19.
Jahrhunderts ausgeführt, s. Wolfskopf auf dem Hammer, sieht insgesamt ähnlich aus wie die Werksgravuren im de Luxe-Stil.
The engraving’s style is similar to 19 century Colt’s
engravings, note the head of a wolf on the hammer. It
appears to be very close to the de Luxe factory engraved Centaures.

The Liège acceptance marks are in line with the 1970
production of this Centaure.
Barrel with 8 rifling grooves, the last 3 digits of the serial

Through this data we wish to present proofs that even
today our venerable Belgian Colts stand up to their task,

“Erfolgreich” bedeutet den Wettkampf als einer der
Erstplatzierten bzw. mit einem Clean-Match (ohne Fehlschuss) zu beenden. Durch die FROCS Hall of Fame
sollen diese platzierten FROCS innerhalb der Schützengemeinde bekannt gemacht werden.
Diese Datenerfassung war schwieriger als erwartet, fast
so schwierig wie die Centaure-Erforschung selbst.
Wir mussten zur Kenntnis nehmen, dass offenrahmige
Perkussionsrevolver wie unsere Centaure im statischen
Schießen nicht mehr den Status von Wettkampfwaffen
haben. Beim Westernschießen andererseits werden
Perkussionsrevolver incl. 1860er Repliken zwar regelmäßig, aber in relativ geringer Zahl eingesetzt. Viele
deutsche Schützen betrachten sie jedoch als “Einsteigerwaffen“, da für Perkussionsrevolver waffenrechtliche
Genehmigungen leichter als für Patronenwaffen zu
erlangen sind. Es scheint, dass nur eine kleine Gruppe
von Hardcore-Westernschützen ihren Vorderladerrevolvern längerfristig treu bleibt.
Trotzdem siegten während der letzten Jahre eine Reihe
von FROCS in unterschiedlichen Klassen beim
CAS/BDS Cowboy Action Shooting/Westernschießen
wie auch in statischen Disziplinen. Aber nur wenige
setzten dabei ihre Centaure ein. Beispielhaft dafür sind
die Sieger der 9. offenen Hessischen Landesmeisterschaft 2013:

# 1880 NC FROCS 125 Big Peter (mit Uberti SAA’s)
Wie auch immer, Paden und ich fanden, es sei an der
Zeit, ab 2013 für die erfolgreichsten FROCS & Centaure-Schützen zwei Auszeichnungen zu stiften.
Eine soll der
 nachhaltig erfolgreichste Ein- und Aufsteiger
erhalten, die andere das
 Lebenswerk des vielseitigsten und beständigsten Leistungsschützen auszeichnen.
Um die hohe Leistungsbereitschaft der weltweiten
Centaure-Schützen zu erhalten, behalten wir uns das
Recht vor, diese Auswahlkriterien flexibel anzuwenden.
Deshalb bitten wir alle FROCS auf diesem Globus
herzlich, ihre Schießergebnisse mit Centaure bei offiziellen Wettkämpfen einzureichen. Die “frühen” aus dem
letzten Jahrtausend wie auch die aktuellen! Damit wollen wir die gefühlte Konkurrenzfähigkeit unserer belgischen Lieblingsrevolver mit harten Fakten belegen!
FROCS Hall of Fame 2013 Shooting Star- Award:
Erst Anfang 2011 legte ein deutscher Jung-Cowboy
den vorgeschriebenen SuRT ab, nach vorsichtigen
Gehversuchen im Westernschießen mit ItaloPerkussionsrevolverrepliken und einer unauffälligen,
fehlgeleiteten IPSC- Karriere.
Er trainierte hart, konnte sich bei der Hessischen LM
2011 platzieren. Vom erfahrenen, verständnisvollen wie
strengen Lehr- und Jedi-Meister FROCS #30 Lederstrumpf sensibel gecoacht, ging es ab 2012 Schlag auf
Schlag. Uns‘ FROCS #99 Magic Joe zeigte, was Talent, Fleiß, Ehrgeiz und das richtige Schießwerkzeug
möglich machen:

that they still out-perform modern made pistols from
Italian, Spanish or Italo-US makers - if the pard or
pardette behind the gun is doing his or her job.
“Succeeding” means to be ranked among the top shooters and/or shooting a clean match (no misses) in a given
competition shoot. The objective is to bring these top
ranked FROCS to the attention of the shooting community by installing our FROCS Hall of Fame.
This data collection turned out to be almost as difficult as
the Centaure research project itself.
One of the stumbling blocks we discovered was that
open top type C&B revolvers like our Centaures do not
seem to be considered a state of the art “race gun” any
more when it comes to stationary type competitions. In
cowboy action shoots on the other hand C&B revolvers
incl. 1860 pattern repros are regularly found but in small
numbers. Many German shooters, however, consider
them as “entry guns” because a subject gun license is
be relatively easy obtained compared to one for cartridge guns. It appears that over a longer period of time
only a small group of hardcore cowboy & cowgirl shooters is sticking to their cab & ballers in the game.
Still a number of FROCS showed outstanding performance during the last couple of years in all sorts of classes of CAS/BDS Cowboy Action Shooting/Westernschießen, or stationary shooting disciplines but a few
only competed with their Centaures. This is exemplified

Be that as it may Paden and I felt that the time is right to
issue two types of awards for the most successful
FROCS & Centaure shooters, beginning 2013.
One will be used to honor the
 beginner achieving sustained success, the
shooting star, the other to memorialize the
 lifetime achievements of the most versatile and
consistent top-performer.
To maintain the high level of enthusiasm among the
global community of Centaure shooters we reserve the
rights to apply these definitions in a flexible way.
Hence we cordially invite all FROCS around the globe to
report their shooting results with Centaures at official
matches. “Historical ones” from the last century are as
appreciated as current ones!
This will help us to substantiate the felt competitiveness
of our favorite Belgian pistols with hard facts!
FROCS Hall of Fame 2013 Shooting Star Award: Only
early 2011 a young German buckaroo passed the mandatory SuRT (safety and rules test) after some deliberate
cowboy action shooting with Italo percussion revolver
replicas and an uneventful but misled career in in IPSC.
He trained hard and could manage his first placement in
2011 at the Hesse State Championship.
Thanks to the sympathetic but demanding coaching of
experienced teacher and yedi master FROCS #30 Lederstrumpf our FROCS #99 Magic Joe did not miss a
beat from 2012. He proved what will be accomplished if
you mate talent, diligence and ambition with the right
shooting tools:

Aus deutscher Sicht ist das eine erfreuliche Entwicklung. Allerdings ist mir kein Land bekannt, vielleicht mit
Ausnahme Großbritanniens, das seinen Bürgern solch
einen Aufwand fürs Sammeln und Besitzen von Perkussionsrevolvern und Conversions auferlegt!

From a German perspective this is a pleasing development. However, I am not aware of any other country
imposing on their citizens such time and effort to collect
and own percussion revolvers and conversions, possibly with the exception Great Britain!
