1 A Guide to the Papers of Rudolf Carnap December 20, 1977 Research supported by NSF Grant no. SOC74-21083 NEH Grant No. RC-27666-77-866 2 Contents The Rudolf Carnap Collection The Preliminary File Folder List……….………….……………………………..3 Acknowledgements…..………………………………………………………… 3 Brief Bibliography….……………………………………………………………4 Box Lists………………..………………………………………………………..5 A Name List to the Rudolf Carnap Collection………………….………………………71 A 72 N 114 B 74 O 117 C 80 P 118 D 83 Q 121 E 85 R 122 F 86 S 126 G 90 T 134 H 93 U 136 I 98 V 137 J 99 W 138 K 100 X L 105 Y 141 M 108 Z 142 3 The Preliminary File Folder List The preliminary list which preserves insofar as possible Carnap‘s own filing system (and occasionally lack thereof) as to the order, content, and titles of the file folders. It should be remembered, however, that nearly four years elapsed between Carnap‘s death and the time that the Collection was acquired by the University of Pittsburgh and the manuscripts were moved and to a certain extent used during that time. Thus the degree to which the listed order represents Carnap‘s intended order, while high, is probably not exact. Even so, the information which can be gleaned from its present order is of some significance and has therefore been preserved here, whatever the final arrangement of the manuscripts will be. The numbers provisionally assigned to the various folders preserve this order in the following way. The first three digits indicate from which box the folder comes, and the next two digits indicate which folder within that box is being described. Individual manuscript items are also assigned numbers within the folders, but that information is not reproduced here. Thus a folder labeled 027-11 would be the eleventh folder in box 27. The summary page indicates in a general way the contents of the various boxes. This information was supplied by the catalogers. It should be taken only as a guide, because individual folders often contain a wide variety of materials. These general characterizations have been repeated for the reader‘s convenience at the top of the box lists themselves. Acknowledgements This Preliminary File Folder List was prepared with the generous support of the National Science Foundation (Grant No. SOC74-21083) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (Grant No. RC-27666-77-866). Without their support organizing the Carnap Collection for scholarly use would have been impossible. The editor would also like to thank his assistants on the project: Ms. Eva Savol, Mr. Karl Müller, and Mr. Richard Nollan. The advice and assistance of the Department of Special Collections, especially of its coordinator Mr. Charles Aston, and of the Carnap Collection Committee was also greatly appreciated. 4 BRIEF BIBLIOGRAPHY 1922 1926 1928 1929 1934 1936 1939 1942 1943 1947 1950 1952 1954 1964 1966 1971 Der Raum Physikalische Begriffsbildung Der logische Aufbau der Welt Abriss der Logistik Logische Syntax der Sprache ―Testability and Meaning‖ Foundations of Logic and Mathematics Introduction to Semantics The Formalization of Logic Meaning and Necessity ―Empiricism, Semantics, and Ontology‖; Logical Foundation of Probability Continuum of Inductive Methods ―The Methodological Character of Theoretical Concepts‖ The Philosophy of Rudolf Carnap (ed. The old pp.37-8, which have been part of the RC inventory until today, contained a list of 51 files folders, which were presented as the contents of box 109. The old pp.37-8 were incorrect in several respects. The order of the existing folders in box 109 do seem to correspond to some of those described on the old pp37-8, there is nothing in box 109 which seems to correspond to some other folders listed on the old pp.37-8. The old pp.37-8 were probably provisional inventory pages written before the final arrangement of box 109 was determined and were subsequently left uncorrected by mistake. Assuming that at some time all the folders named on the old pp.37-8 existed, it is unknown what happened to the ―missing‖ folders. However, it appears that none of the ―missing‖folders contained material of great value. They all pertain to sections of RC‘s replies to authors for the Schilpp vol., namely, items that can be found elsewhere in the RC Collection. The microfilmed copy of box 109 does not include a copy of the old pp.37-8, which are replaced by a coy of a different versions of p.37 only. That version contains ony the first 42 folders listed on the old pp.37-8 and is therefore also an incorrect description of box 109. 57 Box 110 Correspondence, notes, lectures Folder 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 Content Politische Rundbriefe Correspondence with publishers and philosophers Proof sheets, early articles and notes (sh.h.) Savage, Carl Gustav Hempel, Dick Jeffrey, Abner Shimony, Sidney Morgenbesser, David Kaplan, and others during the mid 1960‘s 71 The Name List to the Rudolf Carnap Collection The aim of this Name List is to make the Rudolf Carnap Collection more accessible to scholars. To do this we have compiled this list of names from Carnap‘s correspondence, notes he made on people or their works, clippings which Carnap saved from magazines and newspapers, and so on. The list is limited to the names of people, i.e., philosophers, publishers, friends, students, and others, showing Carnap‘s wideranging interest and popularity. There will be other more specialized indices created in the future. The names are arranged alphabeticaly and under each name there are two columns of numbers. For example Akiba, Ben 4 079-35 The number on the right indicates the location of the items in the Collection, i.e., box 79, file folder 35. The number on the left indicates the number of items in the file folder. The Name List gives the user a broad icture of the many people Carnap knew or with whom he corresponded from all over the world and throughout his life. This project was completed through the generous support of the National Ednowmen for the Humanities as part of the larger effort to organize the literacy estate of Dr. Carnap. For additional access to the collection the reader is referred to the Preliminary File Folder Inventory of the Manuscript Holding of the Rundolf Carnap Collection edited by Professor Richard Creath. 72 Aaron, Benjamin 021-71 Albritton, Rogers (cont.) 1 090-73 Abbanano, Nicola Alexander, Gavin 5 1 027-01 027-01 Abel, Elie Allen, R.B. 1 094-15 1 085-31 Abell, Georga 1 091-12 2 Alpert, Harry 094-09 Achinstein, Peter 3 091-08 6 084-02 Alsop, Joseph 3 090-75 1 094-09 Ackerman, Alston, William P. 1 2 081-23 090-69 Adams, Ernest Altman, Julius 1 2 084-03 027-22 Addams, Jane Altman, Zelena G. 4 2 090-14 027-22 Agassi, Joseph Altrichter, Fernc 2 2 088-02 027-22 Aqvist, Lennart Ambrose, Warren 1 5 095-30 090-47 Adukiewicz, K.
