Project: Online Communication Analysis - Methods for Multimodal, Networked Communication.
The project aims at developing new methods and tools for computer-supported digital text and
video analysis.
Collaborator in a study of the SpeechLab Group at the University of Toronto, Department of
Computer Science (Computational Linguistics), with Professor Gerald Penn. The study was
conducted in the field of Human-Computer-Interaction, and consisted of roughly 100
experiments with human subjects, analyzing the quality of automatically generated speech
transcripts and summaries. The results of the study were used for a workshop at the John
Hopkins University’s renowned summer school at the Center for Speech and Language
Processing (Complementary Evaluation Measures for Speech Transcription, 2012), and have
already resulted in joint submissions for conference presentations.
Working Group Chair and member of the Steering Group in the COST Action IS0906
“Transforming Audiences, Transforming Societies”. The Action is funded by the European
Commission and includes more than 240 partners from 29 countries. The Action deals with
cutting edge research regarding theories and methods in media reception and audience studies.
Social Sciences Research Coordinator in a Network of Excellence of the European
Commission (6th Framework Program). The project OPAALS (Open Philosophies of Associative
Autopoietic digitaL ecosystemS) was formed around multi-disciplinary research into Digital
Ecosystems. OPAALS aimed to develop an integrated theoretical foundation for Digital
Ecosystems research spanning three widely different disciplinary domains: social science,
computer science, and natural science.
Member of the Strategic Advisory Board in the Integrated Project Digital Business
Ecosystems (6th Framework Program) from 2005 to 2007.
