T
hink back to your childhood.
Can you recall the many
moments where you changed
gear? You should ask yourself
which gear am I referring to;
gear you wear, gear in reference to
your home or the furniture within it, or
the gears you changed when riding
your first bike, your first motorbike
or when driving your very first car.
Can you imagine a life without that very
important gear change?
Let us focus on the gear change
throughout life and really it doesn’t
matter which transmission we want to
use. If automatic, manual or a DCT
(double clutch transmission), without
such change our life would pretty much
be at a standstill! Of course, gear
change can be automated, but there is
always a driver who decides when and
why a gear change should happen,
so you can control your life to the best
of your ability. Each decision we make
is based on information we compute
and consequently respond to with a
change in gear; we could even call it
direction – remember, there is a reverse
gear after all.
There is a lot in life we can influence,
particularly if we have the desire to
effect change. For me, one of the first
things to comprehend is that we manage
our own path in life. Our very own
change in gear and being responsible
for such change is vital to progress in
life. Blame is a pointless exercise and
will do little in moving things forward
if that is where one wants to go.
We here at Doncaster BMW
and Doncaster MINI Garage could
have stayed in the same gear, the
same showroom, the same service
facilities and the same MINI Garage.
We decided that staying in the same
gear was not just dull and boring for
us, but also for our clients. Further, we
needed to remain on similar gearing
as BMW itself. New products keep on
coming, BMW never stands still and
in fact BMW, like Doncaster BMW,
has a never-ending urge to develop
itself. BMW drivetrains are becoming
more powerful and requiring less fuel,
resulting in the ‘lowest CO2 emissions
of any modern car fleet’ (BMW Group
Press release April 6, 2011). Our
product is packed with technology,
with one of the latest features to come
online being the Eco-Pro function,
which intelligently ensures that your
BMW moves in the most efficient way.
BMW has even introduced its very own
fuel-saving game, awarding fuel efficient
driving with kilometre credits, creating
a new way of thinking. It is no longer
the speed at which we can travel from
A to B that is important; it is now how
efficiently we manage to drive from one
place to the other.
At Doncaster BMW and Doncaster
MINI Garage, we are nearly at our interim
finishing line. Another six months and we
will show Melbourne and our clients a
new dimension in premium automotive
retail. We have selected a new gear and
we will always be ready for a change
in gear. By the way, we are gearing up
for a new BMW franchise, ‘Motorrad’
(German for motorbike), and by the end
of 2011 we will showcase the very
latest BMW has to offer on two wheels.
Our mission is to provide our customers
with another dimension of gear change
– a very exhilarating one that’s for sure!
And wait, there is more to come!
The expansion of Bundoora will
commence in 2012. We will add an
additional static new car display, 100
car spaces and the very latest in BMW
body repair, in particular the ability
to work with new materials such as
aluminum and carbon products.
Try a gear change and get yourself
into a BMW, MINI, or even for
something different, put on a helmet
and take a BMW Motorrad for a ride!

Phil Horton
BMW Group Australia – Managing Director
How long have you been working
with BMW?
Since May 1995, commencing as
Marketing Director BMW GB Ltd.
What would you consider to be your
career highlights?
Having the opportunity with BMW to
work outside of the UK. Being granted
the opportunity to work in both South
Africa and Dubai was a real privilege.
I really enjoy the experience of different
cultures and working in different business
environments.
Who is your family?
My wife Nikki and daughter Francesca.
I had better not forget to mention our
dog, Daisy, and cat, Norman.
8
evolution excite your senses
What interests or hobbies do you have
outside of BMW?
I love spending time with my daughter
Francesca. Outside of my family, I would
rate motorcycling as my main escape
from work. I have also tried (and failed
at) golf several times.
What’s your impression of Australia
so far?
Its BIG! I enjoy the Australian way of life.
It may be a Melbourne thing, but I really
enjoy the informality and friendliness of
the people here. It seems to me that most
are very open-minded.
What do you see as your greatest
challenges in Australia?
It’s BIG! Getting around places to
see the dealers due to the logistics.
The marketplace: The car market at
the moment is volatile and the rest of
the retail market does not appear to
reflect the underlying strength of the
economy.
What is your favourite BMW model
and why?
My favorite BMW car would have to
be the E46 M3; Santorini Blue with
Mugello Red and Santorini Blue interior.
It was my first BMW when I joined
as Marketing Director with BMW, so
plenty of fond memories with that one.
If I was to pick a favorite motorcycle, it
would have to be the GS1200 (all of
them). Each generation just gets better
and better.

BMW i
Munich > Throughout the past two Evolution magazines we have been keeping you updated with BMW concepts and project i.
We are happy to inform that the BMW i3 Concept, previously known as the Megacity Vehicle, is the BMW Group’s first seriesproduced all-electric car focused squarely on the mobility challenges in urban areas and, as the first premium electric vehicle,
reinvents the hallmark BMW attributes for the future.
Doncaster BMW Top Tips
Then comes the BMW i8 Concept. Previously known as the Vision car, it is a sports car of the most contemporary variety –
forward-looking, intelligent and innovative. Its unique plug-in hybrid solution brings together a combustion engine and an electric
drive system to create an extraordinary driving experience complemented by extremely low fuel consumption and emissions.
To learn more about these two vehicles look at our Technology News page and read up on what exciting features you can expect
to see in the new BMW i range.
Doncaster, Victoria > If you leave your BMW
unlocked in the garage, it has the potential to drain
your battery. Ensure you always lock your BMW.
If you install your e-tag directly underneath the rain
sensor and high beam assist device, the high beam
assist will fail to work. Ensure you always position
your e-tag to the side – adjacent to and left of the
sensor behind the mirror is recommended.
Check your tyre pressures regularly – we recommend
checking every second time you fill your vehicle with
fuel. Also have a wheel alignment performed and
have it checked and reset every 10,000km. Doing
this will ensure you get the most out of your tyres.

Laser lights
Following the introduction of the full LED headlight, laser light is the next logical
step in the development of vehicle headlight technology for BMW. Laser lighting is
monochromatic, which means that the light waves all have the same length. And it is
also what is known as a ‘coherent’ light source, which means that its waves have a
constant phase difference. As a result, laser lighting can produce a near-parallel beam
with an intensity a thousand times greater than that of conventional LEDs. In vehicle
headlights, these characteristics can be used to implement entirely new functions. Also,
the high inherent efficiency of laser lighting means that laser headlights have less than
half the energy consumption of LED headlights. Simply put, laser headlights save fuel!

Starting in June 2011, the DriveNow joint venture between the
BMW Group and Sixt AG is offering a state-of-the-art mobility
service, initially in Munich, whose key features include highefficiency premium vehicles and an extensive range of services.
The special highlight of this service is that vehicles do not have to
be picked up from and returned to specific locations but can be
hired and left wherever the customer wishes. Customers can check
vehicle availability either on the internet, via a smartphone app or
simply when passing by on the street. Conventional car keys are
not required either, since the DriveNow vehicles can be unlocked
by means of a chip inserted in the driver’s licence and started using
a starter button. Following Munich, further major European cities
will get this service later in the year. In the long term, there are
plans to extend this car-sharing service to other continents as well.

DriveNow – the f irst
premium car-sharing service
In addition to the new driver assistance systems, the BMW i3 will have
application-based remote functions to allow the car to be accessed
using a smartphone. As well as familiar functions such as remote locking
and unlocking, CarFinder and Google Local Search, the driver can
also draw on new features designed specifically for electric vehicles,
such as remote-controlled thermal preconditioning of the battery pack
and vehicle interior. This intelligent thermal preconditioning system
allows the driver to bring both the battery pack and the vehicle interior
to the optimal operating temperature before the start of the journey.
There are two advantages to starting the journey with a preconditioned
vehicle. Firstly, ensuring that the battery pack is at its optimal operating
temperature right from the start maximises battery power and driving
range, and secondly the driver can enjoy pleasant temperatures in the
interior from the outset of the journey, both in summer and in winter!
BMW i3 – Traf f ic Jam Assistant
The Traffic Jam Assistant makes driving less stressful under monotonous road
conditions. By letting the vehicle ‘go with the flow’, it allows the driver to get
to their destination in a more relaxed state of mind. The Traffic Jam Assistant
maintains a specified following distance from the vehicle in front and in
particularly heavy traffic can autonomously control the speed of the vehicle
right down to a standstill, while providing active steering input.
This enables the vehicle to help the driver stay on course right up to a speed
of 40 km/h – provided you keep at least one hand on the steering wheel.

The world of BMW is on your doorstep in Doncaster.
omething big is coming to
Doncaster BMW. We are
venturing into a world first.
It is so new that not only has
it never been seen in Australia
before, it has never been seen before in
the whole world, not even in the BMW
heart land of Germany.
Now you’re probably asking yourself,
what could possibly be this big and has
managed to be kept a secret until now?
Well… you all know that we are under
a $12.5 million redevelopment and that
we will have one of the largest BMW
showrooms in the world. You have
all read the newspapers and seen our
state-of-the-art service facility. And you
all would have calculated that all of this
is going to happen in just a matter of
months. So now that I have your attention
and you are eagerly skimming your eyes
across the page to find out more, I can
now reveal the secret to you. Doncaster
BMW is branching out into motorbikes!
Yes – Doncaster BMW will become the
first Motorrad dealership with the all new
International BMW Corporate Identity
showroom fit out.
The trouble I had with composing
this article is that our showroom is SO
new; I couldn’t even find images to show
you what it will look like. The ones you
currently see are the closest I could find
to give you a sneak peek of the look and
feel of what you can expect.
The all new showroom will stock the
broadest selection of BMW bikes, the
complete range of BMW rider wear and
accessories, and staff whose objective
is to make riding your BMW more
pleasurable than ever. Chris Saunders,
an avid and experienced rider of most
disciplines, has returned to Doncaster
after selling and accessorising many
motorcycle brands such as Ducati,
Piaggio, KTM, Victory, Suzuki, Hyosung,
Triumph and Harley Davidson. With
many kilometres of road and dirt under
his wheels, advice on apparel and
accessories is guaranteed to be helpful
and informative.
So with the doors opening to Australia’s
newest Motorrad experience, come in

The
Holy
Grail
Not for the faint of heart, the BMW S 1000 RR is for
those seeking the ultimate thrills on two wheels.
J
eremy Clarkson of Top Gear
fame has brought into popular
vocabulary a single word, filled
with meaning and emotion.
A word delivered with such gusto
that it leaves no doubt to the users
intentions. That word is POWER! If used
to describe the awesome BMW S 1000
RR, it is best you underline it, place it in
italics, then highlight it and click bold.
The BMW S 1000 RR was launched
to a waiting public suspicious of whether
or not BMW could deliver a product
within a category dominated by the
Japanese. What a launch it was though!
This bike delivers more rear wheel power
and a faster top speed than even Suzuki’s
renowned Hayabusa, over 190BHP with
ram air, to be precise. It has claimed both
the British and European Super Stock titles
and is leading Australia’s own Superbike
championship. It has been real-world
tested in acceleration, achieving a 0 –
60mph time in 3.28 seconds and will
romp a standing quarter mile in 10.46
seconds.
Brawn
is
best
complemented
by brains, so BMW has given the
S 1000 RR Mensa internals. There are
four modes to select from: Rain, Sport,
Race and Slick, the last requiring an
under seat key to activate. Rain mode
is a fantastic option to get used to the
bike or if stepping up to a full power
superbike. It reduces horsepower and
throttle response, making it a great option
in inclement weather or for suburban
riding. Sport is where a lot of time will be
spent for most riders, as it builds speed
at a practical, predictable rate, until
curiosity, bravado or a higher skill level
than mine (not a big ask really) kicks in.
Then, get ready for reality to change. The
scenery gets blurred and you genuinely
have to tuck in under the screen as the
horizon passes overhead! Braking and
handling are race-winning sharp, with
Brembo four piston monobloc calipers
and 46mm front forks. The S 1000 RR
can be personalised with a great range
of accessories including exhaust options,
screens and performance enhancements.
If it has been a while since you last
laughed out loud in your helmet while
riding a bike, be it café, twisties or track,
the BMW S 1000 RR will remind you
of what a bike should deliver to its rider
every time you open the garage door.

The
Second
Com1ng
The all new BMW 1 Series Hatch – Evolution of the species.
A
t the spritely age of one
billion years old, the earths’
crust had only just cooled
to about the temperature of
your heated seats. At about
this time (give or take a few weeks)
and quite by chance, a concoction of
simple elements decided to become a
molecule. This molecule then grew slightly
more complex than anything that had
been seen on earth before*. The bigger
molecule was just enough to form a simple
singular cell and the cell was so pleased
with itself that it decided to go on and
make some more cells. Then some other
stuff happened and you were made.
It is extraordinarily unlikely that the
recipe of simple elements for life should
ever exist at all. It is even more unlikely
that they should come together in just the
right way and then find a thermal vent
at the bottom of the sea at just the right
temperature to allow them to flourish.
But after a very long time, they did.
After that, all it took was a few billion
accidental mutations and a few more
billion years and here we are surrounded
by all the happy accidents of evolution.
When BMW launched the 1 Series
back in 2004 it was a fair assumption
that, because it would wear the lowest
number yet given to a series, that it may
be a degree simpler than its stable mates.
This was not necessarily a bad thing as
it met the demand for a compact and
uncomplicated addition to the range.
The result was the E87 1 Series and
what owners got was a fun, conveniently
sized BMW that shared the same quality
and prestige of its bigger brothers and
sisters but with a more approachable
price tag. Yes, you would probably get
around more comfortably in a 7 series
and yes, you would probably complete
a lap of Phillip Island quicker in an M3,
but what was offered in the original 1
series was single-celled simplicity and it
worked beautifully.
Now let us go back to our tiny
amoeba at the bottom of the sea three
and a half billion years ago. Think of
it as the E87. Nothing quite like it
has come along before. Unique and
basic. Now imagine that single cell
spontaneously sprouted six pairs of eyes
and could speak Latvian. This would be
the amoebic equivalent of the new F20
1 series.
Aesthetically speaking, the new
One is recognisable as the successor
to the E87. It inherits the cheeky and
appealing layout of a practical hatch.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder
so I will not dwell on its appearance.
Have a look at these pictures and
decide for yourself. Technologically
though, they are as different as
Chocolate and Chernobylite.
The previous 1 series was available
with a range of normally aspirated
engines and a turbocharged diesel.
The F20 gets all its engines turbocharged
with something known as TwinPower.
With a twin scroll turbo, the 1.6 litre
petrol engines manage to squeeze more
bang out of every drop of fuel, so the
new 1 Series is more powerful and more
efficient and it does not have to resort
to dark magic to do it either. The 116i
produces 100 kilowatts and will get you
to 100kph in 8.5 seconds while the 118i
will do it in 7.4 with its 125 kilowatts.
This performance comes at the measly cost
of 5.7 and 5.9 L/100km respectively,
*There was nothing actually around to see it.
16
evolution excite your senses
evolution excite your senses
17
which leads me to think maybe there is
dark magic at work after all. All of this
efficient power can be delivered through
a new optional 8-speed automatic
gearbox. Yes, you read that correctly.
8 speeds is more than my first bike!
The list of standard features is
impressive. idrive (including a monitor),
Bluetooth and the Driving Experience
Control button are all part of the deal.
At the tickle of a switch, the entire
character of the 1 Series can be altered
from Sport through Comfort to ECO PRO.
Each setting allows the car to be enjoyed
in a different way. Sport allows a sharper
engine response, DSC behaviour and
Servotronic responses. Comfort sets
the car up to feel, well… comfortable
and ECO PRO monitors a series of
systems in the vehicle to maximise fuel
efficiency and reduce consumption.
In ECO PRO mode the heater/air
conditioning, heated mirrors, windows
and seats are continuously adapted to
reduce the load on the engine, thereby
decreasing fuel consumption. It will even
introduce Relaxed Driving, which gently
encourages the driver to drive efficiently.
Where fuel-saving systems of other
manufacturers have removed some of the
fun of driving, Relaxed Driving puts the
responsibility and choices on the driver,
rather than taking them away. This is a
good example of the complete package
that BMW EfficientDynamics delivers.
18
evolution excite your senses
So that’s how the 1 Series is going to
help you save the planet; but what about
the fun part?
Well I am pleased to say that while
the new 1 series is older and wiser it is
not any fatter. It is only 83mm longer and
no taller. This means it packs all the new
technology into the same manageable
package, which will be great news
for city dwellers and enthusiastic
drivers alike.
If you dive into a few options you can
have an F20 with rear view camera, park
assist, lane departure, Harman Kardon
stereo, Bi-Xenon headlamps, variable
sport steering, adaptive suspension and
something called the internet. To see
this level of equipment in a small car is
remarkable.
It would have been easy to brand
the 1 Series as the budget Beemer but
instead of allowing it to evolve at the
same rate as its competitors, BMW took
a proven recipe, flew it away in a space
ship for a while and returned with the
missing link.
If you are after a compact car that
surpasses traditional compact car
performance but with all prestige that
you expect from any BMW, then have
a closer look at the new F20 1 Series.
If evolution is all about the survival of
the fittest, this little BMW has won.

Anticipating
Perfection
The latest incarnation of BMW M Division’s iconic executive sedan is about
to arrive and emotions are already running high.
W
hen I first heard
that the all new
BMW M5 was
on its way, I nearly
passed out with
excitement. During the months since
the launch of the latest F10 5 Series, I
had been hoping and waiting for the
announcement with bated breath.
Then I learned it was going to be
turbo-charged and I would have happily
died on the spot and turned in my grave.
Many years ago BMW informed the
world that a turbo-charged BMW would
never wear an M-badge, and as I heard
this promise I probably nodded sagely in
agreement. A muffled exhaust note, turbolag, dubious reliability and a raft of other
undesirable characteristics that came with
the early technology of turbo-charging
had no place in an M-car and so for years
the cylinders of the coveted S engines
have been filled by the purest of forces
– gravity. But no more. Ever-tightening
CO2 emission regulations dictate that
the all new BMW M5 is not allowed to
breathe by itself anymore and now has
the motoring equivalent of an iron lung.
This has brought out the sceptic in me.
Flashback now to 1998 and as an
impressionable young apprentice I am
about to have my first M5 experience.
20
evolution excite your senses
A decidedly tatty E28 M5 (the one that
started it all) had been sorely neglected
and was crying out for some serious
attention but it did not matter. As I pulled
out onto the wiggly Wellington Bypass,
the way I thought about cars was about
to change forever. Ten minutes later
I was arriving back at the garage with a
smile of such epic permanence, the other
mechanics could not even slap it from my
face. I had caught the M-bug.
Some months later I was given the
opportunity to drive the successor to
the first M5 – the E34 M5. I remember
thinking that it seemed a bit fat, the larger
6 cylinder engine would not be as refined
as the previous S38 motor and all the
electric seats and gadgetry would add
weight and reduce manoeuvrability. And
do you know what? I was completely
wrong. It was faster, smoother, more
comfortable and huge fun. This all lead
to yet another ridiculous smile, which was
only wiped away when i learned that
the next generation M5 (the E39) would
have traction control and four obnoxious
tail pipes. I was confident that adding
electronic intervention to the M5 would
disconnect the driver from the road and
the new look exhaust would only appeal
to motorists who believe the things they see
in ‘The Fast and the Furious’. Guess what?
Wrong again. The four pipes were one
of a few styling changes that nicely hinted
at the hidden performance without being
too showy, and the DSC allowed the car
and the driver to work together. In fact, the
torque from the V8 was so monumental
that I am pretty certain I would have
ended up in the weeds without it.
Then the E60 M5 was announced and
I scoffed at the F1-inspired V10 engine.
It would surely sound weird and for once
I was right. It sounded beautifully and
sensationally weird. Like no other engine
I had ever heard before and, once
again, the M5 had won my heart.
Well I have not even set eyes on the new
F10 M5 in the metal yet. So I am sorry but
I cannot therefore tell you what the 560
horsepower 4.4 V8 twin-turbo sounds
like. I cannot tell you if it has the same
purposeful and intimidating presence
that all its older M-brothers have had.
I cannot tell you if the new 7-speed
double clutch gearbox and Active M
Differential are any fun. I cannot even tell
you if its fine grain Merino leather feels
like it used to hold a cow together.
I can tell you one thing without any
degree of uncertainty though. It will be
perfect. They always are.

Thursday September 29
10am: Massive production meeting
as we analyse all the rundowns for our
eight-and-a-half hour telecast on Saturday.
Scripts and instructions flying everywhere!
The Grand Final teams come in, so time
for more stats. Usual nightly news, then
attend a private welcoming party for
Socceroo Harry Kewell at a friend’s
house. Kids are also invited and my
soccer-loving son, Jack, is in heaven!
“I do not know if I

Chipped my tooth! 7.30am: Emergency
dental visit. Thank you to Frank at Westfield
Doncaster. Then into Channel 10 to
finalise Grand Final rundowns and scripts.
Watch a DVD of the Magpies versus Cats
in Round 24 to familiarise myself again
with the players. Present the news from our
special studio at the MCG and home by

Stephen Quartermain, one of Australia’s hardest working sports
commentators, shares his AFL Grand Final week with us.
A
s another season of AFL footy
comes to an end, so does
another busy period for me.
With so much going on, I ran
out of time in September to
test drive one of Ingo’s finest for Evolution,
which is always a highlight for me in my
role as ambassador for Doncaster BMW.
26

Instead, I thought I’d give you an insight
into my favourite week of the year – the
AFL Grand Final week.
As a TV host and commentator of
the biggest day on Australia’s sporting
calendar, here is a brief overview of
how my week panned out. From juggling
my various duties on Channel 10, my
MC roles, to attending the multitude of
functions, we are lucky enough to get
invited to in the ‘big week’. Hang on for
the ride!
Sunday September 25
The Grand Final teams are decided.
Frustratingly, no Hawthorn! Hurting badly
but no time to feel sorry for myself. Start
compiling statistics for the Collingwood
versus Geelong game. Make my way
into Channel 10 for my very last ‘One
Week at a Time’ show. The 90-minute
Grand Final edition flies by in no time.
Home in bed by 11.30pm.
Monday September 26
Midday: Arrive at Federation Square for
a fun hour helping to teach kids how to
commentate as part of the school holiday
activities in GF week. Then head straight
to Channel 10 for my nightly news duties.
Plenty of people willing to give me grief
about Hawthorn’s loss. Unfortunately, I
don’t really have a comeback line. Race
from news to Crown for the Brownlow
Medal. I get there late, just in time to
watch Dane Swan win and then head
home. In bed just after midnight.
Tuesday September 27
Back to Fed Square for GF week, then
again to Channel 10 for the news.
Continue to compile stats for the big day.
At 7pm, catch up with my brother (over
from Perth) for dinner. No functions – no
suits or black tie required.
Wednesday September 28
Production meetings, script writing then
present the news. Rush home, then back
into the city to Channel 10’s official
Grand Final week ‘Seriously’ party. Well
behaved, as I am too busy, unlike many
others that I cannot name. In bed at
midnight.
Saturday October 1
The big day! Leave for the MCG at 8am.
On air at 10am, which makes it a long
day. Lots of concentration required, but it
is also heaps of fun and since it is Channel
10’s final AFL telecast, I promised myself
to take it all in and enjoy it. And I do!
Game time quickly arrives after the horror
of Meatloaf and away I go, calling
the action with my co-commentators –
Anthony Hudson, Matthew Lloyd and
Luke Darcy. Awesome match for three
quarters before the Cats power away in
the last term. Wrap-up the telecast and
off air at 6.30pm. No time to reflect.
Race home and change, then straight
back into the city for our ‘Wrap party’.
Lots of reminiscing and a few drinks.
Decide to pull up stumps at 2am.
So that is a short narration of my
whirlwind 7 days of Grand Final week.
I do not know if I will ever see another
week like it. Time now for some normality
and a couple of long drives to the
wineries in the Yarra Valley, in my BMW
of course. Until next season, go Hawks!

W
hen Ingo Reisch,
Managing Director
of
Doncaster
BMW,
decided
to undertake a
multi-million dollar redevelopment of
the Doncaster dealership, he decided
to add in one extra special element: a
rooftop bee hive.
The bees will enjoy the local flora in
the Doncaster area and bother no-one.
They’ll happily make the honey that will
be collected by City Rooftop Honey
Company and put in stylish individual test
tube vials with a unique gift to be left for
everyone at Doncaster BMW to enjoy.
Those who know the true story of Ingo
Reisch’s background will see this move
as completing a full circle of success in
Australia since he arrived as a young
man from Germany. The original reason
Ingo made the big move to Australia
was, being an apiarist, Australia had a
shortage of beekeepers.
“I’m really excited about putting in a
bee hive on the roof of our exciting new
dealership. We will be helping the local
bee population, ensuring they play an
important role in pollinating flowering
plants and improving local ecosystems
and the end result will be some very
special honey to give away,’’ Ingo said.
Vanessa Kwiatkowski and Mat
Lumalasi, co-founders of the Melbourne
City Rooftop Honey Company, currently
have 30 sites where hives are operating
successfully across Melbourne, but this is
the company’s first car dealership and it
is very excited about the association with
Doncaster BMW.
Mat Lumalasi says each hive is so far
producing honey of a distinctive colour
and taste and he expects Doncaster
BMW to produce its own unique strain
of honey which will be interesting for
everyone to taste.
Mat comments “It’s amazing to become
involved with Ingo given his background
as a beekeeper and with Doncaster
BMW. Beekeeping is quite a European
thing and now Ingo is ensuring he gives
back to this dying craft and is helping it
live on. It’s just so wonderful.’’
Doncaster BMW is proud to be helping
raise awareness of the importance of
honey bees in the city. Not many people
know that one in three mouthfuls of food
we consume wouldn’t be possible with
the pollinating effect of bees entering our
food cycle. They are incredibly important
and we can’t wait to start!

Classic Moment
A busy General Manager during business hours and a car enthusiast in his spare time,
Doncaster BMW’s Patrick Fielding is the proud owner of an immaculate 1986 BMW 635CSi.
History of this vehicle
I knew the previous owner who was a
fellow student at Brisbane Boys Grammar.
I picked it up as a trade-in when he
upgraded to a new BMW in 2004.
Why do you drive a classic BMW?
I am very committed to BMW and have
enjoyed many different models over the
years, but I really appreciate the distinct
character of cars like the E24 635CSi.
I go through phases of driving and
enjoying it day-to-day, then finding that it is
not the mobile office like an F10 5 Series,
a current 3 Series or a MINI Cooper S
(I do a lot of work on the phone while
travelling to and from the dealership).
Favourite things about your car
I had the privilege of driving seven or eight
635CS’s as company cars in 1988 –1989
while I was with BMW Group Australia.
Although I have had access to many highend BMW vehicles since then, the 635CSi
remains a real favourite. I love the elegant
and classic lines – it’s both masculine and
sporty. It rides beautifully as well.
Not so favourite things
It’s not what you’d call economical by
today’s standards – 15L/100km is not
great fuel economy. Also, 155kW does
seem tame these days.
Favourite driving road
I don’t have one as I can enjoy the 6
anywhere. It’s all about grace and
balance rather than performance.
Is it for sale?
I never think in terms of updating the 6
Series. I’d be more interested in finding
another 2002tii (ideally a Baur Cabriolet)
to park beside it.

Classic Facts
• Released to the world in 1976 to
rave reviews, the E24 6 Series had an
indisputable connection to its pretty
1968 – 1975 CS Coupe predecessor.
• Australia received the 6 Series in
March 1977 as the 633CSi. Power
came via a fuel-injected 3.2 litre SOHC
in-line six-cylinder engine, producing
147kW and 290Nm respectively,
and paired to a three-speed automatic
gearbox.
30
evolution excite your senses
• Limited sales were recorded due
to the 633 CSi’s relatively high price
tag and, as a consequence, by
1980 BMW had temporarily ceased
importation.
• Six years later (May 1986) the E24
returned to Australia as the 635CSi.
Along with a significant facelift, a 3.4
litre SOHC 18-valve six-cylinder engine
was now fitted, providing 155kW of
power and 290Nm of torque. Optional
transmissions were now on offer such
as a four-speed automatic, five-speed
manual or five-speed manual plus
overdrive gearbox.
• Equipment levels were also more
generous including anti-lock brakes, a
limited-slip differential, air conditioning,
powered front seats, leather trim, front
fog lights, trip computer and alloy
wheels.
• September 1989 saw the last of the
BMW 635CSi models sold in Australia,
bringing the worldwide total of E24
6 Series Coupes being manufactured
between 1976 and 1989 to 86,219.
Heavy
Haulers
Craig Abbott, Program Designer for Heavy Haulers
Australia talks about the programs they have on offer.
I
t’s that time of year again when
everyone is in a frenzy to lose the
extra kilos that have slowly but steadily
crept on during the winter months.
We all know that exercise (along with
a healthy diet, of course) is the only way to
get back into shape. But the reality is that
most dread the thought of spending tedious
hours at the gym and getting nowhere.
That’s where our Haulers and Hitters
programs come into play.
Since 2007, our goal has been to
provide a group exercise program that is
both fun and safe, yet challenging enough
to deliver desired results fast and effectively.
The result thus far has been extremely
successful; our participants are burning fat
and keeping it off too!
Both programs have been designed to
be body friendly, therefore they appeal to
everyone ranging from those who are fit to
those who are not so fit, male or female,
young or old and even those who are just
out of rehab from injury. Typically conducted
under cover, we use an interval based
training system which enables participants
to go at their own pace and complete each
and every unique exercise by going as
far as they can, or as many times as they
can, within a set timeframe. After repeating
each session, the challenge is simply
to beat their personal effort every time.
This effective way of training has provided
outstanding results and studies have
confirmed that repetitive short, sharp, intense
bursts of exercise elicit greater training and
fat burning results.
With summer coming up, now is as good
a time as any to join us and start shedding
some unwanted body fat. Enjoy exercising
in a group training environment that has
a strong community spirit and where you
will achieve increased fitness levels and
ultimately gain the body shape you crave.
Book in today for a free trial session to
experience one of our great programs.
Get ready to get lean... get strong...
and get motivated!

Trevi Fountain
Colosseum
Life Is Beautiful...
Especially When In Rome
A
fter spending time in London
and Paris, Rome was my next
destination. Mesmerised by
its sheer beauty and history,
Rome truly was one of
the greatest highlights of my recent
European holiday.
Upon arriving, I instantly felt at home.
Coming from Paris, where the locals
definitely didn’t approve of my efforts to
converse in French, my ability to fluently
speak Italian immediately gave me a
sense of confidence. So, with only two
days to spare, I hit the ground running.
My first stop was Vatican City.
For centuries... Rome has been the home
40
evolution excite your senses
of the Roman Catholic Church and the
Pope. Each year thousands flock to Vatican
City to pay homage to Catholicism and to
experience the breathtaking surroundings,
including St. Peter’s Basilica and the world
famous Sistine Chapel. It is renowned for
its architecture and its decoration that
was frescoed throughout by Renaissance
artists including Michelangelo, Sandro
Botticelli, Pietro Perugino, Pinturicchio
and others. Needless to say, the artwork
was spectacular. Never before had I seen
ceilings that exude such splendor and
intricate detail. In particular ‘The Creation
of Adam’ by Michelangelo, a legendary
painting, absolutely captivated me.
After hours of wandering around St.
Peter’s Basilica, it was time to indulge in
some traditional Italian food. Our menu
included pizza, pasta and lots of wine!
Of course, no meal is ever complete
without dessert, so naturally we treated
ourselves to a tantalising assortment of
gelati. It was the ideal combination.
A siesta would have been great too but
there was no time to waste; our next stop
was the Colosseum.
We jumped onto the train and, five
minutes later, there in front of us standing
tall was the Colosseum, such an epic
sight. Located in the centre of the city, it
was the largest amphitheatre ever built in
the Roman Empire. It is considered one of
the greatest works of Roman architecture
and engineering.
As expected, the queue to enter
stretched for what seemed miles.
However, it moved in a surprisingly timely
fashion and before we knew it, we were
roaming the interior arena, taking happy
snaps at every opportunity.
Next on the itinerary was a visit to the
Spanish Steps. By this stage the sun was
starting to set and the sky was glowing
a vibrant pink with purple shades; it was
a perfect summer’s eve and the perfect
setting to see the Steps, which were
adorned with hundreds of admirers.
Just when we thought we could not
possibly have time to see anything else
in one day, we did the impossible.
Yes; we decided to have dinner by the
Trevi Fountain.
Unbelievably stunning, it stands at 26
metres high and 20 metres wide and is
classified as the largest Baroque fountain
in the city, not to mention the most famous
fountain in the world. Very impressive!
Being wined and dined whilst taking in
the magnificent views of the Trevi Fountain
was amazing, but all good things must
come to an end and we had to call it a
night. But not before I threw my two coins
into the fountain. The first to ensure a return
and the second simply to make a wish.
As a new day dawned, our last in Italy,
we already had an endless list of sites we
wanted to see and places we wanted
to explore. We quickly devoured our
much needed espresso and commenced
our adventure to Rome’s oldest market,
located at the Piazza di Campo de’ Fiori.
With an array of unique stalls ranging
from fresh produce to fashion, it was easy
to get carried away and buy everything
in sight. The atmosphere was electric
and walking through the open air market
amongst the hustle and bustle of the locals
was an experience within itself.
From Piazza di Campo de’ Fiori to
Via Veneto, the most chic and prominent
street in Rome, thanks to the glamour
of its cafes, restaurants and lavish
designer boutiques that were ever present
in Fellini’s ‘La Dolce Vita’, I found myself
in my element. What more could a girl
want?
La Bocca della Verità, otherwise known
as ‘the Mouth of Truth’, was our last stop.
Legend has it that if one told a lie with
one’s hand in the mouth of the sculpture, it
Spanish Steps
La Bocca Della Verita
would be bitten off. Like Audrey Hepburn
in the romantic comedy, ‘Roman Holiday’,
I too had to place my hand into the famed
mouth just to see what would happen.
Luckily for me nothing bad came of it, as
I still have my hand! So, lesson learnt...
it always pays to tell the truth.
Italy was a whirlwind of an experience,
one which I will cherish until the day
I return. Next time I will definitely stay
longer in an effort to discover the rest
of Rome’s many wonders but until then,
arriverderci!

The Road Less
Travelled
Ever wanted to head off the beaten track and get lost in a foreign country?
Doncaster BMW’s own Josie Camilleri travels to Italy to do just that and
discovers a piece of family history along the way.
A
s a first generation Australian,
my Italian roots have
never been far from home.
Homemade wine was the
norm and semi sun-dried
tomatoes were on the menu long before
they were fashionable.
So when we decided on a trip to
Europe, a special spot was instantly on
the itinerary – Serrata, Italy.
This little town in the province of Reggio
Calabria, affectionately referred to as the
toe in Italy’s boot, is the birthplace of both
my parents. With a population just shy
of 1,000 inhabitants, the number swells
during summer and we were set to find
out why.
Having bid farewell to the parents a
month earlier, it was our turn to enjoy la
dolce vita. Arriving at Rosarno train station
from Rome we were just a short, white
knuckle journey from our destination.
42
evolution excite your senses
Set amongst olive tree plantations, the
road into town is a sight to be seen and
with each turn you wind back the clock
of time. Cobbled streets meet perfectly
eroded buildings to produce an image of
quintessential Italian charm.
Here the news comes to you, literally.
Simply grab a chair and place it at
your door and wait for others to arrive.
Who needs the gossip magazines!
Forgotten to buy the essentials or fancy
a juicy slice of watermelon? Just keep
an ear out and soon enough the local
supplier will turn into your street ready
to help.
Day got away from you and you are
not sure of the time? No worries. The bell
tower at the centre of town will alert you
every 15 minutes (yes, every 15 minutes).
Food is an undisputed aspect of Italian
life and in Serrata there is plenty of it.
Multiple courses, all with fantastic flavour
Celebrating Festa with a statue of San Pantaleono
Serrata town
and amazing local produce, fill your
plate, (after plate after plate...). Sitting
down for dinner at 10pm is often the norm
and a big lunch is no reason to refuse
second helpings. In fact, I think the phrase
“kill you with kindness” may have
originated here.
Italian’s passions are not just confined
to food and historical monuments.
Their love for patron saints is perhaps less
known but is a tradition that is well and
truly alive. Every town and small village
has a patron saint who is honoured by
its people. We had timed our arrival
to coincide with that for Serrata –
San Pantaleone.
Recognised annually on July 27, the
real celebration, the festa, takes place on
the first Sunday in August. This is when this
sleepy village comes to life. Locals who
have moved away to the bigger cities
for work return and every main street is
decorated with thousands of fairy lights.
The more solemn aspect of the festa is a
procession celebrating renewed faith and
hope. A statue of the saint is held aloft
by the fittest in the community for more
than two hours as it circles the streets.
Before long, hundreds are in step behind
the local priests and the town Mayor, a
cousin no less!
Nightfall brings with it the more joyful
aspect of celebration: the fireworks.
Set aginat the picturesque backdrop of
the nearby mountains, it is easy to see
why my mother was eager to return for a
sight last experienced in her childhood.
Before we leave there is one final thing
we must see. After a short walk through
the streets, we arrive. Before me is not only
the house my dad once called home, but
the very spot he was born. Literally within
a stone’s throw is my mum’s former home.
These buildings are not glamorous in
the sense that they do not spend money
on their homes as you or I would (there is
not a plasma screen in sight) but people
here are very house proud and everyone
is eager to invite you into their home.
Here, life is to be enjoyed, not spent

This trip was a special time for my
parents as they not only got to return
home but also got to share it with their
daughters and first grandson, Cooper.
With his blonde hair and blue eyes (a
rarity in Southern Italy), he was “the
golden child” and they were more
than happy to present him to my many,
many cousins.
Travelling abroad is often seen as an
opportunity to learn about life in a foreign
land. For me, this trip taught me about
things a lot closer to home.

New York, Paris, L ondon... Hobart?
Experience Tasmania’s latest world-class attraction, MONA, and have
your senses teased in every possible way.
Y
ou would expect a provocative
museum in the hot spots of the
world such as New York, Paris,
London or Berlin. Out of all the
cities in the world, I bet when
I say Hobart, Tasmania, it probably
would never have crossed your mind.
Before you make your first steps into
MONA (which stands for ‘Museum
of Old and New Art’), you realise that
even the location is part of owner David
Walsh’s way to challenge your mind.
I have never left a museum wanting to go
back for more like I did here.
Clearly David, who just celebrated
his 50th birthday, loves two extremes
of art; the very ancient and the very
modern. Egyptian art appears to be
one of his passions and when you take
the Willy Wonka-styled round glass lift
into the basement (level 3, the lowest
level), you quickly recognise that even
the architecture of this impressive venue
44
evolution excite your senses
resembles elements of a pyramid. Upon
entering ‘The Void’, you immediately
notice art on one side and a vast, sheer
cut limestone wall on the other, one of
MONA’s most dramatic spaces, with
breathtaking dimensions. The architecture
here is just as important and significant
as the artwork displayed within it.
At MONA your senses are teased in
every possible way. Admire ancient art,
watch AV footage or take part in some
of the exhibitions, so much so that you
become the art. You can control a light
globe with your heart beat or try to
communicate with some hanging plants
which answer to your every touch,
producing a rather mystifying concert of
amazing sounds. One fascinating exhibit
included a giant vertical scanner which
allowed you to take a full-sized body
image of yourself and become a digital
participant and another exhibit where
you can then listen to the sounds of
strangers telling you the simple message
of “I love you”. All of this is a lot of fun,
but with some other rather challenging
adult displays, discretion is advised
when selecting what your children see.
From the very beginning you are
equipped with an iPhone-like device
which guides you through all the various
exhibits. MONA also encourages you
to voice your opinion on each display.
All you need to do is select either a ‘+’
for your approval or an ‘X’ for your
dislike! Each day the feedback is
analysed and, based on this, some
exhibits find the exit faster than others.
After two brilliant hours of amazement
and shock, my wife Shauna and
I took a break to refuel our bodies at
the Moorilla Wines and Moo Brew
Cellar Door, which is situated next door.
With our brains overloaded with thoughts
and images of what we had just seen
and having time to reflect on MONA
over lunch, we had an urge to go back
in for a second time. Once just was not
enough to satiate our curiosity.
A day was not sufficient and we had
decided to stay overnight in The Pavilions
(all of which are named after famous
architects and artists). Our Pavilion offered
outstanding views over the Derwent
River and was loaded with technology.
Naturally, all are fully stocked with Moo
Brew and Moorilla Wines.
Many people ask why MONA is
situated just outside Hobart. The logical
explanation is that the owner, David
Walsh, was born in Glenorchy and has
a patronage for Tasmania. He wants to
help put his state on the cultural map and
this place certainly goes a long way in
supporting his aim.
MONA is much more than just a museum
and you must experience Moorilla Wines,
Moo Brew, The Pavilions, The Source
fine dining restaurant and, of course, the
Moorilla Winery Entrance

cool Cellar Door Café. Don’t forget the

different options of how to get there; a
high-speed catamaran transfer directly
from Brooke Street Ferry Terminal; the hot
pink MONA ROMA bus; a 10 minute
taxi ride from the CBD; or there is plenty
of parking if you travel by car. It was
quite interesting that all staff seemed to
enjoy working at MONA, as did the
adjoining businesses. They all love the
eccentric museum as much as they do
the eccentric owner.
Tasmania made the perfect compact

Somehow just like MONA, the old and

modern design of the X6 and the old

such a beautiful spot and MONA has
added another missing link that will drive
domestic and global tourism to new

Many thanks to our friends at Hobart

In case David Walsh ever gets his

David is, “You would look much better

you can have a BMW?” The new

Olive oil
Sea-salt flakes

1 tbsp baby capers shallow

4 nasturtium leaves
4 nasturtium flowers
8 violet flowers
1 spring onion cut into 16mm x 5mm thick x 4cm
long batons (4 per serve)
4 petit radishes, stem on
Serves 4
Combine all ingredients and marinate overnight, turning occasionally.
The following day, remove the veal from the marinade and pat dry. Over a
moderate heat, place a heavy-based pot and add a little olive oil, season the
veal with a little salt and pepper and sear in the pot until lightly browned on
all sides; add the marinade and enough water to cover the veal. Simmer for
1 hour (the veal should be medium rare). Remove the pot from the heat and
allow to cool. Place the veal in the fridge until ready to serve. To serve, finely
slice the veal and dress with a little olive oil (4 pieces per serve)
Place the milk and gellan in a pot and bring to a simmer while whisking;
remove from the heat. Add mustard, garlic, capers, anchovy, gelatin and
lemon juice to the milk and puree in a blender. Warm the oil on the stove
o
top until approximately 35 , and then slowly add the oil to the milk mixture
while blending. Remove the mixture from the blender and fold the tinned tuna
through the mix and season with salt. Spread the mixture evenly into a deep
tray lined with non-stick spray roughly 1 ½cm thick. Allow the mixture to set
overnight. The following day turn out the set mixture and cut into 1 ½cm
thick x 1cm wide x 3cm long pieces and then crumb. Deep fry to order
until golden brown. If you have any mix left over, crumb it and fry to make
a great canapé.
Slice the tuna lengthways into 4 12cm x 5mm thick strips, each weighing
about 40g. Place a non-stick pan over a moderate heat and line with a thin
film of olive oil. Season the tuna with sea salt. Remove the pan from the heat
and sear the tuna on one side ONLY for 10 seconds, then remove from the
pan and place in the centre of the plate.
Place 4 slices of veal around the tuna. Deep-fry the tuna mayonnaise
croquettes and place 2 croquettes on 2 of the slices of veal. Place 1
nasturtium leaf, 1 nasturtium flower, 2 violet flowers, 4 pieces of spring onion,
1 petit radish and a few crisp capers on each serve of the veal dish. You can
substitute any of these vegetables with any spring greens that take your fancy.

The Wonderful

Doncaster MINI Garage is not so mini anymore.
O
ur love affair with MINI
started in 2002, when
Doncaster MINI Garage
opened its doors for the
first time. The highly
anticipated release of the Cooper and
Cooper S proved to be a major hit. Nine
years later and the brand is still going
strong as the MINI family continues to
grow steadily.
From humble beginnings with only
two models in its range, MINI now has
54 evolution excite your senses
54 evolution the anniversary edition
nine additional models. They include
the MINI Ray, the MINI Clubman and
the MINI Countryman. These days you
can also choose between the Cabrio
or the soon-to-be-released Coupé
and Roadster models. Oh, and you can
opt for petrol, diesel or turbo-charged
engines too. Each of them have their
own distinctive look whilst showing-off
different bells and whistles, however,
they share one thing in common... and
that is that they’re all super cool!
Their popularity has been so great
that we have had to take action
to accommodate this and have
therefore built a brand new showroom
especially for them.
Flooded by natural light, the interior
boasts funky style and arresting
design, whilst the facade is equally as
impressive, with a striking fibreglass
MINI replica that even lights up for
added rock-star appeal.
To celebrate Doncaster MINI Garage’s
shiny new home, we threw a Grand
Opening party in July. The day was
a success with kids indulging in fairy
floss, pop corn and slurpees, while
the big kids enjoyed listening to our
DJ’s awesome tunes and, of course,
admiring the impressive MINI range
we had on display.
To further complement the range
and our new showroom, we have
also created our very own dedicated
MINI sales team headed by Anthony
Roberts and our two MINI Product
Specialists, Yi Zhang and Reuben
Herries. Together they bring a wealth
of enthusiasm and knowledge to the
dealership, along with their sheer
passion for the brand; you can always
expect an unprecedented level of
customer service.
That goes for servicing your MINI
too. When you service your MINI
with us either at our Doncaster or
Bundoora locations, you can be
guaranteed your beloved is in good
hands as we only use the latest MINI
diagnostic equipment, factory-trained
technicians and Genuine MINI parts,
ensuring it returns to you both revived
and rejuvenated.
The future here at Doncaster MINI
Garage is looking very bright. Not
only is the range getting bigger and
better, so are we! Come in and check

family. Treat yourself by booking in

MINI’S FLYING
THE COUPé
Coupé cake is its practical nature.
Believe it or not (and please do),
although the MINI Coupé is a strict
two-seater, it still offers the same
amount of luggage compartment
space as the MINI Clubman (a massive
280L!). This is 120L increase larger than
the MINI Hatch. To make life a little
easier they have added a rear lid wall;
an opening through to the passenger
compartment from the luggage space
that is perfect for getting those longer
items into the car.
The first cars are being built now
ready for an early 2012 delivery,
so things are getting well and truly
exciting as the time draws near to
choose the specification and colours.
The Coupé offers some hot new
features like the new Twin Blade 17”
wheels, as well as new paint and
trim options. We are currently having
fun in our new showroom using the
MINI Configurator to build our dream
Coupés and we welcome you to come
in and do the same.
It’s sleek, fast and unmistakably
MINI. It’s the all new MINI Coupé.
Reuben Herries
What has more spunk, more speed and is even
more fun than a MINI? Introducing the all
new MINI Coupé.
E
ven though the brand
has expanded in size and
affordability, MINI is still
committed to having as
much fun as possible. Clear
evidence of this can be seen in an
exciting new model on MINI’s horizon
– the MINI Coupé. With cheeky styling,
a pop-up rear spoiler and contrasting
sports stripes, it’s enough to grab any
MINI fan’s attention (and knock on the
door of a few rivals!).
First unveiled as a concept at the
2009 Frankfurt Motor Show, the MINI
Coupé gained a lot of interest but, as
with many concepts, we were left
wondering if it would ever make it to
Australian roads. However, true to their
56 evolution excite your senses
56 evolution the anniversary edition
word, MINI has announced the release
of their first dedicated two-seat sports
car into the Australian market.
The Coupé offers a striking and fresh
new look to the MINI range. While it
retains all of the signature MINI traits,
it has a unique ‘helmet’ designed roof
and a sharply raked front windscreen.
This gives the Coupé a much more
aggressive and sporty look that is sure
to get heads turning.
A car that looks this good is in danger of
being labelled ‘all show and no go’. One
drive in the MINI will confirm otherwise.
Two models are on offer: Fast and
Faster! The Coupé will be launched in
Cooper S and JCW (John Cooper Works)
versions. The Cooper S will come with a
135kW 1.6 litre turbo-charged engine
diving through a six-speed manual or
semi-auto transmission. The optional
JCW ups the performance to 155kW of
smile inducing power. The stance of the
car is all business; having the wheels in
each corner and dropping the overall
height means the famous go-kart like
handling is further enhanced over
previous MINI models. Agility and fun
have been taken to a whole new level
with the MINI Coupé. Those who have
had the privilege of getting behind
the wheel tell of an amazing drive and
sensational performance.
Now, you may be thinking, that’s
great but what about the golf clubs?
Well the icing on the already tasty
MINI Roadster
I
f you are still reading, you clearly want more. Well so do we. And that is why MINI will be releasing the hot
new MINI Roadster! Based on its... not-so-identical twin brother, the Roadster is the cheeky new convertible
in MINI’s line-up. The Roadster will be an instant classic. Being released shortly after the Coupé arrives, the
Roadster is a car for those of us where having the top down is a way of life. Capturing the pure essence of a
British sports car, the Roadster is a gorgeous little two-seat convertible, engineered to eat up all the twisty bits
of road in style. With unmistakable MINI lines and a modern performance chassis and engine, the Roadster is set to
be the pinnacle of the convertible market.
I am already contemplating the Great Ocean Road and a MINI Roadster – working on the perfect line through
a corner and a perfect tan at the same time!

Find your perfect fit
The MINI Countryman D – fitting in with your lifestyle.
W
e are fully aware in
life when shopping
for clothing that a size
12 by one clothing
manufacturer
is
not equal to a size 12 by another.
Consequently, clothes must be tried
on in order to determine what fits
best. The same can be said for vehicles
we want to drive. One SUV by one
manufacturer will never be the same
size or fit that another will offer, and
therefore requires a test-drive to find
out which suits you. There is nothing
more frustrating when brands take on
the ‘one size fits all’ policy.
It would be reasonable to assume,
as many people do, that one vehicle
model suits only one kind of person or
demographic and the only thing you
can customise about your vehicle is
the colour. MINI understands that not
everyone wants the ‘one size fits all’
and believes that your vehicle should
be as individual as you are.
The new MINI Countryman marches
to the beat of its own drum and caters
to individual needs. Obvious options
for customisation are of course the
exterior and interior colours and
58 evolution excite your senses
58 evolution the anniversary edition
the choice of a centre rail or storage
console, but also the more unique
feature options such as racing stripes,
JCW body kit or coloured mirror caps.
The MINI Countryman also offers the
choice of 2WD or 4WD depending on
your requirements.
At launch the MINI Countryman was
only released with a 1.6-litre petrol
engine, however this has now been
followed by the diesel variant. The
MINI Cooper D Countryman produces
270Nm of torque but the most
impressive attribute the diesel has over
the petrol is the combined cycle fuel
consumption that is 4.4 litres/100km
and CO2 emissions that are just 115g/
km; the petrol is respectively 6.0
litres/100km and 140g/km.
Needless to say, purchasing a vehicle
is a big investment. As the famous
Australian mad hatter music guru
would say, ‘do yourself a favour’ and
visit the brand new MINI showroom
at Doncaster, get yourself into a MINI
Countryman D and see if this vehicle is
the perfect fit for you. We’re certain it
will be!

John Ilhan Tribute Lunch
The annual John Ilhan Tribute Lunch was held on
Friday August 12 at the Members’ Dining Room at

help raise funds for two great charities.

The lunch is held in honour of the late John Ilhan,
the founder of the Crazy John’s mobile phone empire, who tragically died
at the age of 42 in October 2007. This year’s key note speaker at the lunch
was AFL CEO Andrew Demetriou.
The charity lunch raises money for the Ilhan Food Allergy Foundation
(established by John Ilhan and his wife Patricia to invest funds in research to
find a cure for anaphylaxis) and the Rotary Club of Brighton.
The lunch is now in its fourth year and Doncaster BMW has been a proud
sponsor throughout its history. A special thanks to Christopher Hope from
Doncaster BMW who helped with the organisation behind the scenes.
Doncaster BMW even supplied a brand new MINI Cooper for auction
which was snapped up by an eager guest.
Patricia Ilhan from the Ilhan Food Allergy Foundation would like to thank Ingo
