District 1 Report
District 1 fiddlers participated in two county events
this fall. The first was the parade at the Palermo
Community Festival. Fiddlers entertained
spectators from a special trailer pulled by a pick up
truck in the parade. They then performed at the
Salmon Festival in Oroville. It is always nice to
play there in the park, with an excellent sound
system provided by the event organizers. Fiddlers
also play for the residents of Country Crest
retirement living once a month in Oroville. That is
always a favorite event.
Workshops continue on the first and third Mondays
of each month at the Bolt Museum in Oroville,
1650 Broderick St. Activities begin at 7 p.m. Our
monthly fiddle jams are held the fourth Sunday of
the month at the Feather River Senior Center, 1335
Myers St., Oroville, 2-5 pm. Join us in a circle jam,
and try your hand at performing for the crowd later
in the afternoon. Most people bring a snack to
share. Coffee and tea are provided for a small
donation. Newcomers are always welcome, so
come on down and jam with us.
District 2 Report
Membership in District ll has nearly doubled
this year with a host of new members forming
their own sub-chapter in Tuolumne County.
Dave Rainwater, recently called up to rejoin the
New Christy Minstrels after a ten year hiatus,
has been the sparkplug. Jamie Coffey is the subchapter's secretary.
District ll lost one of its most active members
recently with the death of Horace T. Riddle.
Tom was known statewide
backing up a multitude of contestants over the
years. He was a CSOTFA Life Member. Tom
will be missed greatly and our sympathies go
out to Rosemary.
Monthly jam have continued at Sonora, Fresno,
Madera Ranchos and Armona.
District 3 Report
The 39th Annual “Fiddlin' Down the Tracks”
that was held at Country Oaks Bap st Church this year
was a HUGE success. This is our second year that we
were welcomed with open arms from Country Oaks
Bap st Church since moving from the West Park
Gymnasium on “D” Street. This move has been an
acous cally and comfort improvement (for those who
remember the echo and folding chairs). Fiddlers from
Tehachapi, Bakersfield, Fresno, Hanford, Encinitas, and
Moorpark came to play and entertain the audience.
Ka e Jones of Tehachapi was presented on
Saturday with the Howdy Forrester Scholarship Award
and a check for $500 for college. Congratula ons,
Ka e!
The divisions that competed on Friday night
were the Senior, Senior-Senior, and Adult Band
Scramble. Gayel Pitchford of Tehachapi was the top
winner for the Senior Division (Ages 50-69) and Willie
Randal of El Cajon won the Senior-Senior Division (Ages
70+). Willie was also awarded the “Oldest Fiddler”
medal at the young age of 85. The Adult Band Scramble
winning band was compiled of Joe Hunsinger, Chuck
Murtomaki, Anne e Scherr, and Wayne Agnew.
Saturday's compe on started early with the
Tehachapi Strings Orchestra providing the opening
ceremony. The first divisions to play were the Small Fry
(Ages 8 and under), Junior-Junior (Ages 9-12), and
Junior (Ages 13-17). There was s ff compe on and
great music played. The winner from each of the
divisions were Daniel Cro y (Small Fry), Nathan Cro y
(Junior-Junior), and Shira Ellisman (Junior). Daniel
Cro y of Fresno was awarded the “Youngest Fiddler” at
the age of 6 years old!
The Saturday a ernoon compe tors kept the
audiences toes a-tappin' with more music and
entertainment. The Adult division was won by Cristelle
Ellison-Gillis (Bakersfield) and the Open division was
won by Stacey Snodgrass (Hanford). Stacey Snodgrasss
of Hanford and Hughie Smith of Bakerfield walked away
with the win by almost 30 points.
The Junior Novelty division are those
instruments that aren't a fiddle, banjo, guitar, or
mandolin. Joey Wallek of Tehachapi won this division
playing the piano. Piper Meisler of Tehachapi played
the cello and placed first in the Cello/Bass division. The
new “Jim Smith” Junior Picking division was won by B.J.
Zheng of Tehachapi on his mandolin. The Open Picking
division was taken by Jack Pierce of Bakersfield on his
banjo.
The first place winners of each of the fiddling
divisions then compete against each other for the tle
of Grand Champion. Shira Ellisman of Encinitas fiddled
her way to win this top spot. Shira was then cer fied by
the California State Old-Time Fiddlers Associa on,
District 3, to compete in the Na onal Fiddle Contest
that is held is Weiser, Idaho.
Our judges this year were Arthur Kee from
Brentwood, Anita Marley of Pa erson, and Bill
Whi ield also from Pa erson, California. A huge thanks
goes out to them to travel from all over California to
Tehachapi and support this event.

District 6 Report
The California State Old Time Fiddlers
Association, District 6 has continued with their
busy schedule through September and October.
With Summer beginning wind down and Fall in
the air we have concluded the year with several
outdoor events in addition to our usual first
Sunday of the month event at the St. James
Lutheran Church and the fourth Sunday of each
month at the Millville Grange in Palo Cedro,
where we feature a free concert by a local band
and Open Mic for local musicians to share their
talents.
We have several of our members that have
performed at the local Farmers Market, Sponsored
by the Shasta Growers Association, in Redding on
the first three Saturdays of each month. One of the
highlights of September was seeing the Old
Kennett String Band, made up of our President,
Timothy Garrison, Publicity Chair, George
Fredson, and members Amy Vogt and Carolyn
Faubel, perform on stage at the McCloud
Mountain Bluegrass Festival along with the
Central Valley Boys and Paige Anderson and the
Fearless Kin on Saturday, September 11th, then
again at the the Honey Bee Festival, in Palo Cedro,
the next day, Sunday September the 12th.
Our members also provided music for the Grand
Opening of the Lassen Landing Shopping Center
near Shingletown, the Arts in the Park Festival in
conjunction with the Ducky Derby festivities, in
Redding, the Manton Apple Festival, the Heritage
Days Festival at the Burney Falls State Park, and
the Annual Fundraiser at the Wild Horse Sanctuary
near Manton, California. In addition to all that we
had members playing at fifty-four (YES - 54!)
events in the Redding and Red Bluff area at local
Assisted Living facilities and many other spots
including the Veterans Home of California in
Redding, Golden Umbrella Senior Center and
Mercy Oaks Senior Residence Center.
This year, the “Crown Jewel” of our events for
District 6 took place at the end of the month when
our members invested a great deal of their time
and energy helping Tex and Sharon Ash with the
33rd Annual Western Open Fiddle Championships,
October 22nd through the 24th, at the Red Bluff
Elks Lodge. We provided the sound system and
filled many of the volunteer positions to help make
the event the huge success that it was. Again,
Canadian fiddler Calvin Vollrath provided an
amazing kick-off concert and all those
participating in the contests were amazing beyond
words. We hope many of you had the opportunity
to attend and see first hand what District 6 helped
put together for the enjoyment of so many Old
Time Fiddle Lovers.
With the Holiday Season just around the corner we
would like to wish everyone the very best
throughout the months of November and
December and we hope you include some Old
Time Fiddle Music along with your other holiday
plans. You can keep an eye on our activities for
District 6 by checking in with us and “friend us”

leading these workshops).
As for future activities, D7 is:

District 9 Report
Our new format of including a 'featured group' of musicians at our monthly jam sessions is working
out very well and being enjoyed by our musicians as well as our music supporters and guests. Several
of the featured groups are members of our own District. We have quite a 'library' of talented people.
A favorite was the performance of AJ Lee, a young lady whom we have watched grow up in District 9
and become an outstanding musician and vocal performer.
She is very busy performing at East Coast fes vals and in
many other places including Nashville, TN, wri ng songs
and crea ng tunes. She has a CD out and it is noted on
our website. Another of our featured group was 'Common
Thread' from Tracy, CA. Outstanding performance and
we've requested they come back soon. Our President,
Tom Clausen, with backup from banjo man, Steve
Goldfield, brought us a medley of Quadrilles, from the
early days of fiddle and dance, to exemplify how the fiddle
established itself to be such a versa le and essen al
instrument through folk history. It was a great
presenta on and several people of varying ages were up
dancing.
We've also added some new pages and items to our
Baystrings newsle er. Chef Jean Kalvig is pu ng in some
of her favorite recipes and ge ng others to share their
favorites with our members. Our Be y Hainley has her
“Words of Wisdom” sec on and John Kalvig, our District 9
photographer, gets to share the great pictures he takes
each month. The 'Way Back Page' features pictures from
our past jams. Trying to iden fy adults and kids alike is a
challenge. Check our website to see the latest issue.
The talents (computers and others) of Dr. Steve Goldfield
were requested by the District 9 Board to create/establish
a FaceBook page for us. He did so amazingly quickly and
our 'friends' are growing in numbers each day. We are
having new visitors and new members come join our
group a er they 'saw' us on FB.
We invite you to check out our website, CSOTFA9.org for
informa on and links to other CSOTFA District websites to
find out what is going on throughout the state with all our
fiddlers and friends.
