Bratislava as the capital of Slovakia and former
coronation city of the Austro-Hungarian Empire has an
incredible amount of historical and modern architecture,
art, parks, and interesting venues on display. It is the
perfect destination for tourists who like to check sites off
a list, but also for those, who love to enjoy the spirit and
atmosphere of a town. In Bratislava you get both –
a chance to see many tourist sites and thanks to the
reasonable size of the town, you won’t need to rush the
sightseeing, but will get a chance to sit down for a coffee
or drink and feel the „spirit“ of the town.
Bratislava, as a town on the Danube, was a muse to
many artists. A river running through a city is always
magical. In Bratislava a new walkway on the bank of
the Danube has been recently built and became very
popular with locals, making it the perfect place to end a
working day or relax over a weekend. There is nothing
quite like the view over the Danube on a sunny day or
in sun set.
Bratislava’s historical centre is smaller in size, but big
in what it has to offer. The dominant of the town is
the Bratislava castle which is located at the top of the
Castle hill and provides an incredible view of the town.
To make sure you have covered all the „must see sites“
in Bratislava, check by the St. Michael’s Gate, one of the
former 4 gates to the city. Just a few minutes away down
the „Korso“ walkway, is the Main Square, a meeting
point of locals, lively all year round. Dominated by the
Old town hall, the Main square is a venue to many
concerts, performances and markets, among them
events of the Cultural summer – the biggest summer
culture festival in Bratislava. The historical centre is full
of beautiful historical palaces, functionalist buildings,
museums, galleries, romantic allies, charming cafés and
gorgeous view spots. All you need to do is take the time
to explore all of Bratislava’s beauties.
One of the best things about Bratislava – are its people.
Don’t hesitate to approach the “Bratislavaers” – the
inhabitants of the city, if you need advice on directions,
on Slovak cuisine or on picking the right concert for the
evening. If you’re in a restaurant or a bar, you’ll find out
first hand, how communicative “Bratislavaers” are and
just how proud they are of their hometown.

Bratislava war als „Stadt an der Donau“ Muse für viele
Künstler. Ein Fluss, der durch eine Stadt fließt wirkt
immer magisch. In Bratislava ist vor kurzem ein neuer
Fußgängerweg entlang des Donauufers entstanden
und wurde schnell zum beliebten Ort der Bewohner,
ein perfekter Platz nach einem Arbeitstag oder einfach
zur Entspannung am Wochenende. Der Anblick über
die Donau an einem Sonnentag oder während dem
Sonnenuntergang ist einfach wunderschön.
Bratislavas historisches Zentrum mag zwar klein in
Größe sein, doch kein Besucher kommt hier zu kurz.
Die Dominante der Stadt ist die Burg Bratislava,
die sich an der Spitze des Berghügels befindet und
einen wunderschönen Ausblick auf die Stadt bietet.
Um sicher zu gehen, dass Sie keine der wichtigen
Sehenswürdigkeiten ausgelassen haben, besuchen
Sie das Michaelertor, eines der 4 ehemaligen Tore, die
zur Stadt führten. Nur einige Minuten davon entfernt,
über den Korso hinunter, befindet sich der Hauptplatz
– Treffpunkt für viele Stadtbewohner und lebendig
zu jeder Jahreszeit. Der vom Alten Rathaus geprägte
Hauptplatz ist der Veranstaltungsort vieler Konzerte,
Märkte, Aufführungen, unter anderem auch den
Veranstaltungen des Kultursommers – dem größten
Kultursommerfestival in Bratislava. Das historische
Zentrum ist voll von prachtvollen historischen Palästen,
Funktionsgebäuden, Museen, Galerien, romantischen
Ecken, bezaubernden Kaffeehäusern und herrlichen
Aussichtspunkten. Alles was Sie brauchen, ist Zeit um
die Schönheiten Bratislavas zu erkunden.

The Bratislava region is the perfect getaway when you
need to relax from the buzz of the city or simply want to
discover what the region surrounding the capital has to
offer. The region’s natural boarders are created on one side
by the Danube and Morava rivers and the Small Carpathian
Mountains on the other.
The Small Carpathian region is first and most well known
as a wine area. The region has been used for grapery for
centuries. Thanks to the good location of the vineyards and
specific soil characteristics, the reputation of the wines and
their outstanding quality was spread to many countries of
the world and even to royal courts. The most important
centers of wine production are former independent
royal towns of Pezinok, Svätý Jur and Modra. Today they
are sought out for their vintage feasts, prestigious wine
competitions, days of open cellars and wine tastings.
The region spreading around Bratislava has breathtaking,
beautiful nature. The Záhorie area, to the north - west of
Bratislava, is perfect for hikes, walks in the nature, cyclotourism by the Morava river, hunting, fishing and horse
riding. The region is very well known for its typical dialect
which is preserved and still spoken by locals to this day. If
you are looking for a quiet, or even spiritual getaway, the
Záhorie area offers Marianka, the oldest pilgrimage spot in
Slovakia.
In the Podunajsko region, there is a number of water
surfaces where you can refresh yourself on a hot summer
day. The most popular is the Slnečné jazerá lake in Senec,
only 20 minutes away from Bratislava.
Castles, historical villas and ruins are a great getaway
activity. They take you away from the modern world, make
you forget all your problems for a while and take you a few
centuries back into the family of the Pálffys, Eszterházys or
other famous dynasties. One of the most popular castles
in the Bratislava surroundings is the Červený Kameň Castle
(Red Stone astle) only 40 minutes away from Bratislava,
close to the town of Modra.
Last, but certainly not least, on every visitor’s “must see list”
in the Bratislava region should be the various handicraft
traditions, mainly ceramics, wood sculpture and smithery.
Nothing makes you appreciate the craft and handwork like
seeing the craftsmen carve out a figure of a wood log.
Die Region Bratislava ist der richtige Ort für Erholung,
wenn Sie dem Getümmel der Stadt entkommen wollen oder

Die Region der Kleinen Karpaten ist in erster Linie als
Weinbaugebiet bekannt. Die Region lebt seit Jahrhunderten
vom Weinbau. Dank der günstigen Lage und den
spezifischen Eigenschaften des Bodens, war der gute Ruf und
die exzellente Qualität des Weins in vielen Ländern der Welt
und sogar an Königshöfen bekannt. Zu den bedeutendsten
Zentren des Weinbaus zählen ehemalige freie königliche
Städte Pezinok, Svätý Jur und Modra. Heutzutage werden
diese Orte häufig bei Veranstaltungen wie Weinlesefeste,
prestigeträchtige Weinwettbewerbe, Tage der offenen
Weinkeller und Weinverkostungen aufgesucht.
Die Region, die sich im Umkreis von Bratislava ausstreckt
zeichnet sich durch eine atemberaubende, wunderschöne
Natur aus. Das Gebiet Záhorie im Nordwesten von
Bratislava, ist wie geschaffen für Wandertouren, Spaziergänge, Radtouren entlang der March, Jagen, Fischen oder
Reiten. Die Region ist für ihren typischen Dialekt bekannt,
der bis heute erhalten blieb und von den Bewohnern immer
noch gesprochen wird. Wenn Sie nach einem ruhigen,
oder sogar spirituellen Ort suchen, bietet Záhorie den Ort
Marianka, die älteste Pilgerstätte in der Slowakei.
Die Region Podunajsko verfügt über zahlreiche
Wasserflächen, die eine angenehme Erfrischung an heißen
Sommertagen bieten. Das beliebteste Sommerurlaubsziel
Slnečné jazerá (Sonnenseen) in der Stadt Senec ist nur 20
Minuten von Bratislava entfernt.

Villen und Burgruinen ist eine tolle Freizeitaktivität. Diese

All tap water in Slovakia is safe to drink, unless
there is a warning claiming otherwise. Slovakia has the
biggest supply of drinking water per inhabitant in the
world, that is why there is no need to use non-drinking
water in the country.
In der Slowakei fließt aus jedem Wasserhahn

Despite the fact that Bratislava has a reputation
for being a safe city, it may happen that you need
help during your visit. Car theft and theft from
cars can be avoided by a good choice of parking
place. Park at public car parks when possible. If
you lose your passport, this should be reported to
the Foreign Police on Sasinkova street No. 23, tel.:
09610 11111. A temporary passport can be issued
by the relevant foreign embassy or consulate.

Sie möglichst auf öffentlichen Parkplätzen und in
Parkhäusern. Bei Verlust Ihrer Reisedokumente
melden Sie dies bei der Ausländerpolizei in
der Sasinková Straße 23, tel.: 09610 11111.
Ersatzdokumente werden von der zuständigen
ausländischen Vertretung ausgestellt.

Public transport (MHD) in Bratislava is run by the
Dopravný podnik Bratislava, a.s., which operates trams,
buses and trolleybuses. Time-limited tickets are valid for 15
min., 60 min., or 90 minutes /night lines/ tickets. Children
under 6 travel for free. 24-hour, 48-hour, 3-day and 7-day
tourist tickets are also available. Passengers must buy a
ticket prior to boarding public transport and must punch
the ticket in the nearest punching machine as soon as they
board. A new ticket need not be punched when changing,
provided the time has not elapsed. The penalty for failing to
show a valid ticket to a ticket inspector is 50 €.

Parking in the city centre is only permitted in
designated parking spaces. Illegal parking is punishable by
a fine, clamping, or towing away of the vehicle. Contact
details for the police in such cases is attached to the
windscreen. The parking information system provides upto-date information on available free parking spaces at
public car parks in the centre of Bratislava.

Taxi
Die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel (Straßenbahnen,
Busse und O-Busse) werden vom Verkehrsbetrieb DPB
(Dopravný podnik Bratislava, a.s.) sichergestellt.
Zeitlich begrenzte Fahrscheine werden mit einer
Gültigkeit von 15, 60 und 90 Minuten /Nachtlinien/
verkauft. Kinder unter 6 Jahren fahren gratis. Im
Angebot sind auch Touristenfahrscheine für 24 und 48
Stunden, 3 Tage oder sogar 7 Tage. Der Reisende ist
verpflichtet, den Fahrschein vor dem Einsteigen in das
öffentliche Verkehrsmittel zu kaufen und diesen sofort
nach dem Fahrtantritt im Entwerter zu markieren.
Beim Umsteigen wird der Fahrschein nicht mehr
gekennzeichnet. Falls jemand bei einer Fahrschein
kontrolle keinen gültigen Fahrschein vorweisen kann,
beträgt die Strafe € 50.
Im Stadtzentrum darf nur an vorbehaltenen Stellen
geparkt werden. Das Parken in verbotenen Zonen wird
mit einer Strafe oder durch Blockierung bzw. durch
Abschleppen des Autos bestraft. Eine Information über
den Kontakt zur Polizei befindet sich direkt auf der
Blockierungseinrichtung. Das Parkinformationssystem
bietet Ihnen aktuelle Informationen über freie
Parkplätze auf öffentlichen Parkplätzen im Zentrum
Bratislavas.

It is cheaper to order a taxi by phone than to hail
one on the street. The initial charge varies from 0,80
€ to 1,50 € and the price per kilometre varies from
0,30 €/km to 1,20 €/km. Taxi drivers are obliged to
issue receipts on request.
Eine Taxibestellung per Telefon ist billiger als
dessen Anhalten auf der Straße. Die Einstiegsgebühr

the Slovak republic, the passport must be valid at least 2

Facts about Slovakia / Fakten über die Slowakei
Slovakia became a sovereign state 18 years ago.
However the history of the Slovak nation is much
older than that. The first Slavs settled here already in
5th century AD. After being a part of the AustroHungarian empire, directly after WW I. Slovakia
formed together with the Czech Republic one common
state known as Czechoslovakia that lasted from 1918
until 1993 (except for the years of the World War II).
After the end of World War II Czechoslovakia fell
under control of the Communis regime controlled by
the USSR. The year 1989 was the year of great change
for Slovaks and from then on Slovakia made huge
steps towards stable democracy.
Vor 18 Jahren wurde die Slowakei zum souveränen
Staat. Die Geschichte des slowakischen Volkes reicht
jedoch viel längere Zeit zurück. Die ersten Slawen besie
delten das heutige Gebiet der Slowakei bereits im 5. Jh. n.
Chr. Die Slowakei war Teil des Österreich-Ungarischen
Reiches, nach dem 1.Weltkrieg gründete sie jedoch zusa
mmen mit der Tschechischen Republik einen gemein
samen Staat – die Tschechoslowakei, die von 1918 bis 1993
erhalten blieb (außer in den Jahren des 2. Weltkriegs).
Nach dem Ende des 2. Weltkriegs fiel die Tschechoslowakei
unter die Kontrolle des kommunistischen Regimes der von
der UdSSR angeführt wurde. Das Jahr 1989 war ein Jahr,
das große Veränderungen mit sich brachte und seitdem
unternahm die Slowakei wichtige Schritte in der
Entwicklung zu einer stabilen Demokratie.

Basic Information / Grundinformationen
Majority of the inhabitants of Slovakia are ethnically
Slovak (85.8 %). A significant portion of the population,
about one tenth, is of the Hungarian ethnic. This
population is mainly concentrated on the border with
Hungary, especially in the south-west. Other minorities,
such as the Czechs, Romanies, Ruthenians, Germans,
Ukrainians, Poles and Jews comprise 5 % of the total
population. Slovakia is predominantly a Roman Catholic
state, with more than 80 percent of its inhabitants
claiming adherence to this religion, although real
church attendance is much lower.
Die Mehrheit der Bewohner gehört dem slowakischen
Ethnikon an (85,8 %). Ein bedeutender Teil der Bevölkerung,
etwa 10 %, ist ungarisch. Diese Bevölkerungsgruppe ist vor
allem im südwestlichen Gebiet an der Grenze zu Ungarn

Die offizielle Landessprache ist Slowakisch, im südlichen Teil

mehr als 80 % der Einwohner bekennen sich offiziell zu dieser
Religion; die Zahl der praktizierenden Gläubigen ist jedoch

Slovakia is a true hockey fan nation. We’ve been
supporting, cheering and feeling proud of our hockey
players for decades. When the Slovak national ice
hockey team became World Champion in 2002 the
love for hockey in Slovakia grew even stronger. Every
year, during the World Championships and every four
years – during the winter Olympics, Slovak towns
change into a huge fan arena, all bars, pubs and
restaurants put up huge TV screens that broadcast
matches. Slovaks consider it a must to follow the
games of our team – whether they are at work, in their
car, or in town shouting phrases of support such as:
Slovensko do toho! (Go Slovakia!). In 2011 hockey in
Slovakia will start writing a new history. It will be for
the first time that the World Ice Hockey Championships
will be held in Slovakia, in the towns of Bratislava and
Kosice. If you happen to be in Slovakia between April
29th and May 15th 2011 please expect busy streets
full of friendly and happy people with suspense and
excitement from the sport in their eyes, bars, shops
and the media full of information on hockey and an
incredible atmosphere. If you are not a fan of hockey,
Slovakia will certainly make you into one!

In May, Košice along with Bratislava will host the
World Ice Hockey Championships, the largest ever international sporting event ever held in Slovakia. On 29
April, Košice will host the best ice hockey teams from
the USA, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Austria, Belarus,
France and Switzerland for the opening ceremony.
Hlavná street with its historic St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral will become, for two weeks a pulsing pedestrian
zone for ice hockey fans from across the globe. In addition to the actual hockey games in the Steel Arena
at 16:15 and 20:15 daily, the city will be alive with a
variety of live music, bartender competitions and food
from the best hotels and restaurants that Košice has
to offer and a number of other fun events with excellent DJs. There will also be facade exhibitions of the
works of Andy Warhol and photographs by Sándor
Márai as well as the light fixture installations which
serve as an invitation to visit Košice in 2013 and the
Nuite Blanche (Festival of Lights) in October. The

bratislava Castle / Burg Bratislava
Bratislava Castle - is a symbol and dominant feature
of Bratislava. It stands at a strategic site above the
Danube. The site was inhabited as far back as Celtic and
Great Moravian times. The castle underwent large-scale
reconstruction during the Gothic and Renaissance period
and during the reign of Maria Theresia. Currently, the
castle houses expositions of the Slovak National Museum
and some of its premises are used by the Slovak
parliament. The castle’s reconstruction has been recently
completed. The courtyard of the castle as well as the first
exhibition room - the Treasury are opened to the public.
Bratislava Burg. Das Symbol und die Dominante von

There is nothing like the endorphins from a relaxed day out, just walking and looking around. I
recommend in Bratislava you do just that! Get a cup of coffee to go and start wondering around the
centre. Everything is walking distance so you can literally go from sight to sight on foot. Don’t leave
out the Castle hill which provides an incredible view of the town. Looking over Bratislava from
there very fast you’ll find out what you have left out and where you still need to go. For directions
– use a map, or better ask us – locals. We love to talk to foreigners! If you are planning a day out in the wider region

Franciscan church and monastery, on Franciscan
(Frantiskanske) square. The Franciscan church was
consecrated in 1297 in the presence of King Andrew III.
There are three chapels adjacent to the monastery –
the Chapel of St. John the Evangelist which contains the
tomb of the family of the magistrate Jakub in the crypt,
the Loretánska chapel and the Chapel of St. Rozália.
Diets of the Hungarian magnates were held at the
monastery in 16th and 17th century. In 1526, Ferdinand
I Habsburg was elected as Hungarian king here.
Franziskanerkirche und -kloster, Františkánske námes
tie. Die Kirche wurde 1297 in Anwesenheit von König
Ondrej III. geweiht. An die Kirche schließt das Kloster
gebäude und 3 Kapellen an – die Kapelle des Hl. Johannes
den Evangelisten mit dem Familiengrab des Schultheißes
Jakub in der Krypta, die Loretaner Kapelle und die Kapelle
der Hl. Rosalia. In den Klosterräumen fanden im 16. und
17. Jahrhundert Landtage der ungarischen Stände statt. Im
Jahr 1526 wurde hier der Habsburger Ferdinand I. zum
König von Ungarn gewählt.

Primatial Palace / Primatialpalais
St. Michael’s Gate / Michaelertor
Primatial Palace, Primaciálne námestie 1. It is a
former archbishop’s winter palace which dates to the
end of the 18th century and is the most beautiful
classicistic palace in the city. The palace’s Hall of Mirrors
has seen many significant events - the Treaty of Pressburg
between France and Austria was signed here in 1805
after the Battle of Austerlitz. The palace houses a unique
series of six English tapestries from the 17th century,
which depict the tragic love of Hero and Leander.
Primatialpalais, Primaciálne námestie 1. Das Erzbi
schof-Winterpalais aus dem Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts
ist der schönste klassizistische Palast der Stadt. Der
Spiegelsaal war Zeuge zahlreicher bedeutender
Ereignisse, nach der Schlacht dreier Kaiser bei Slavkov
wurde hier 1805 der sog. Pressburger Frieden zwischen
St. Michael’s Gate, Michalská street. There were
originally four gates to the medieval city. Only one of them
has survived to the present day – St. Michael’s Gate. The
original Gothic gate has been reconstructed a number of
times. During the baroque reconstruction, a copper statue
of St. Michael was added to the top of the 51 m tower. The
tower houses the medieval weapons and city fortifications
collection of the Municipal Museum.
Michaelertor, Michalská straße. In die mittelalterliche
Stadt gelangte man durch 4 Tore, bis heute ist nur ein
Tor erhalten geblieben – das Michaelertor. Das
ursprünglich gotische Tor wurde mehrmals umgebaut,
in der Barockzeit befand sich auf der Spitze des 51 m
hohen Turms eine Kupferplastik des Hl. Michaels. Im
Turm können Sie die Sammlung des Stadtmuseums von
mittelalterlichen Waffen und Festungsanlagen der
Stadt betrachten.
Frankreich und Österreich unterzeichnet. Das Innere des
Palastes verbirgt eine einzigartige Serie von 6 englischen
Gobelins aus dem 17. Jahrhundert, die die tragische
Liebe von Hero zu Leander darstellen.
Grassalkovich Palace / Grassalkovich-Palais
Grassalkovich Palace, Hodžovo námestie. This was
the summer residence of Count Grassalkovič, built in
the 18th century and was the centre of social life at
that time. It was even graced by a visit from Maria
Theresia. In the 19th century the palace was
reconstructed for the Archduke Friedrich. In the
1950s, the palace was used by the pioneer’s
organization. The palace was extensively reconstructed
and became the official residence of the President of
the Slovak Republic in 1996.

Rekonstruktion ist er seit 1996 Sitz des Präsidenten der
Slowakischen Republik.
St. Elizabeth’s Church / Kirche der Hl. Elisabeth
St. Elizabeth’s Church, Bezručova street. St.
Elizabeth’s Church, known as the Blue Church, dates to
the beginning of the 20th century. It is characterized
by the blue colour of the stucco on the walls and is a
unique example of Art Nouveau sacred architecture.
The mosaic on the façade depicts the Miracle of St.
Elizabeth and her relics. The remainders of other
saints are kept behind the main altar.

aus dem Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. Die blaue Farbe
der Fassade
charakterisiert lehrbuchförmig den
Sezessionsstil in der Sakralarchitektur. Das Mosaik am
Portal stellt das Wunder der Hl. Elisabeth dar. Ihre
Reliquien befinden sich zusammen mit denen anderer
Heiliger im Hauptaltar.
Devín and Devínska Kobyla – Sandberg. The Devín
Castle is a national cultural monument and one of the
most significant archaeological sites in Slovakia. Over
centuries the castle witnessed Celts and Romans, and
during the period of the Great Moravian Empire it was
the most important castle on the border. Only Napoleon’s
armies managed to destroy it. Hiking enthusiasts can
continue to the Devínska Kobyla hill – a massif forming
the western part of the Devín Carpathian Mountains
west of Bratislava, where rich thermophilic vegetation
and rare insects can be observed from nature trails. On
the sandstone hill of Sandberg you can still find fossils 14
to 16 million years old. Characteristic for the vegetation
of Devínska Kobyla is its individuality and abundance –
the fauna that thrives here originally did not grow

Devín und Devínska Kobyla – Sandberg. Die Burg
Devín /Theben/ ist ein Nationales Kulturdenkmal und
gehört zu einem der bedeutendsten archäologischen
Fundorten in der Slowakei. Über Jahrhunderte erlebte die
Burg die Kelten, wie auch die Römer und in der Zeit des
Großmährischen Reiches war sie die bedeutendste Burg
am Grenzgebiet. Erst die Truppen Napoleons schafften es
diese Burg zu zerstören. Wanderfreunde können noch bis
zur Devínska Kobyla wandern, einem Massiv, das west
lich von Devín in den Kleinen Karpaten liegt. Hier kann
man thermophile Vegetation und seltene Insektenarten
von den Wanderwegen aus beobachten. Auf dem Sand
berg findet man 14 bis 16 Millionen Jahre alte Fossilien.
Charakteristisch für die Vegetation der Devínska Kobyla
ist die Individualität und Üppigkeit der Fauna, die
unsprünglich nirgendwo sonst auf dem slowakischen
Staatsgebiet zu finden war.

St. Martin‘s Cathedral / St. Martinsdom
St. Martin‘s Cathedral, Rudnayovo square. A 15th
century Gothic church in which 11 Hungarian kings and 8
consorts were crowned between 1563 – 1830. Inside the
cathedral is a replicaa of the Hungarian crown, which
weighs an unbelievable 300 kg, on top of the 85 m tower
and beneath the cathedral, there are crypts where
church dignitaries and city functionaries are buried.
St. Martinsdom, Rudnayovo-Platz. Eine gotische
Kirche aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, von 1563 – 1830
wurden darin 11 ungarische Könige und 8
Königsgattinnen gekrönt. Auf der 85 m hohen Turmspitze
befindet sich eine Kopie der ungarischen Königskrone,
die unglaubliche 300 kg wiegt. Unter der Kirche befinden
sich Krypten, wo bedeutende kirchliche Würdenträger
und Vertreter der Stadt begraben sind.

of St. Claire / Klarissenkirche und - kloster
Church and convent of the Order of St. Claire,
Klariská street. The nuns of the Order of St. Claire came
to Bratislava in 1297 and with the generous support of
the King they had a church and convent built on the site
of a previously destroyed Cistercian monastery. At the
turn of the 15th century, a Gothic tower with extensive
sculptural decoration, from which 4 stone statues have
survived to the present day, was added to the southwest corner. Today, the church serves as a concert hall.
Klarissenkirche und - kloster. Die Klarissinnen
kamen 1297 nach Bratislava und errichteten mit
reichlicher Unterstützung des Königs an der Stelle des
zerstörten Zisterzianerklosters eine Kirche und ein
Kloster. An der Wende zum 15. Jahrhundert bauten sie
an der südwestlichen Ecke einen gotischen Turm mit

reicher bildhauerischer Verzierung, von welchem 4
Steinplastiken bis heute noch erhalten sind. Zurzeit
dient die Kirche als Konzertsaal.
Old Town Hall, Hlavné square. In the 14th century, a
house with a tower which was built for the magistrate
Jakub stood on this site. The Old Town Hall took shape in
the 15th century, joining a number of burgher houses
and over the centuries has undergone several. The Old
Town Hall houses the oldest museum in Slovakia – the
Municipal Museum, which was established in 1868. The
entrance to the exposition on the history of the city and
feudal justice is in the corner of the courtyard. The Old
Town Hall is closed due to reconstructions.
Altes Rathaus, Hauptplatz. An dieser Stelle stand
stand ein Turmhaus, welches der Schultheiß Jakub im 14.
Jahrhundert erbauen ließ. Das Alte Rathaus entstand im
15. Jahrhundert durch Verbindung mehrerer
Bürgerhäuser und wurde durch die Jahrhunderte
mehrmals rekonstruiert. Im Alten Rathaus befindet sich
das älteste Museum der Slowakei – das Stadtmuseum,
welches im Jahr 1868 gegründet wurde. An der Hofecke
ist der Eingang zur Ausstellung der Stadtgeschichte und
der feudalen Justiz. Das Alte Rathaus ist wegen
Rekonstruktionsarbeiten geschlossen.
reduta / Redoute
Reduta, Palackého street. An eclectic building built
over the period 1913 – 1919 on the site of a former
state granary. It is used to hold various social events
and concerts and is also home to the Slovak
Philharmonic.
Redoute, Palackého straße. An der Stelle des
ehemaligen staatlichen Speichers wurde von 1913 bis
1919 ein eklektizistischer Neubau errichtet, womit die
Stadt Räumlichkeiten für verschiedene gesellschaftliche
Ereignisse und Konzerte erlangte. Heute ist sie Sitz der
Slowakischen Philharmonie.

Rubberneck (Panská and Sedlárska street) - no
other city in the world has a statue sticking out of a
hole in the pavement! Rubberneck has already lost his
head twice due to careless drivers, that is why city
councillors decided to help him by erecting a road sign
behind the statue.
Der Gaffer (Panská und Sedlárska Straße) - stellt
zwar keine bedeutende Persönlichkeit dar, doch keine
andere Stadt der Welt hat eine Statue, die aus einem
Kanaldeckel schaut. Der Gaffer kam wegen
unaufmerksamen Kraftfahrern schon zwei Mal um
seinen Kopf und so entschieden sich die Ratsherren,
durch ein Verkehrszeichen auf ihn aufmerksam zu
machen.
Bratislava has the Narrowest house in Central
Europe. You will find it on the Michalská street,
attached to the Michalská tower, house number 15.
The front façade of the house is 130 cm wide. Where
once stood a street for guards is now a kebab fast food
restaurant. If you are in Michalská street and tower
area don’t forget to look out for the narrowest house,
as it is so narrow, it might not even catch your eye.
In Bratislava befindet sich das schmalste Haus in
Mitteleuropa. Sie werden es auf der Michalská Straße
15, neben dem Michaelerturm finden. Die vordere
Fassade des Hauses ist nur 130 cm breit. Wo früher
Wachmänner auf der Straße standen, steht heute ein
Kebab Imbiss. Wenn Sie also in der Nähe der Michalská
Straße sind, halten Sie Ausschau nach dem schmalsten
Haus.
“Korzo” is the name of a pedestrian zone which runs
through the heart of Bratislava’s centre. It starts at Michalská
and Sedlárska Street and leads to the Main Square,
continues through Rybárska gate to Hviezdoslavovo square,
ending at the Propeler café on the Danube riverfront. Today,
it is a meeting place for people of all ages at various cafés,
confectioners, and restaurants, just as it was a century ago.
Through the route of the Korzo runs a coloured laser ray
which shines beautifully especially in dark winter nights and
brings an interesting modern touch to the historical centre.
Korso ist die Bezeichnung für die Fußgängerzone, die
durch das Herz des Stadtzentrums führt: Von der Michalská
und Sedlárska Straße zum Hauptplatz, führt er weiter
durch das Tor Rybárska brána auf den Platz Hviezdoslavovo
námestie und endet beim „Propeller“ am Donauplatz.
Heute sind die verschiedenen Cafés, Konditoreien und
Restaurants am Korso ein beliebter Treffpunkt für Men
schen aller Altersgruppen. Entlang der Strecke vom Korso
verläuft ein Laserstrahl, der an finsteren Winterabenden
besonders schön leuchtet und dem historischen Zentrum
einen ungewöhnlichen, modernen Touch verleiht.
Schöne Náci (Sedlárska street) was a real part of
the Bratislava local colour. This statue commemorates
the eccentric dandy who dressed in a top hat and tails
and lived at the beginning of the 20th century. He was
often seen strolling around Bratislava korzo, handing
flowers to ladies passing by and sometimes even
humming a pre war musical hit.
Die Statue des Schönen Náci (Sedlárska Straße)
erinnert an den wunderlichen Herrn mit Frack und
Zylinder, der Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts lebte. Er
war durch seine Spaziergänge auf dem Korso von
Bratislava bekannt, beschenkte Passantinnen mit
Blumen und sang dazu auch manchmal einen
Vorkriegsschlager.
Taunter (Panská street 29) is a strange figure.
There are various explanations for this statue of a
stooping man on the façade of a house. One of them
says it is intended to ridicule the curious owner of this
adjacent house who used to “spy” on passers-by on
the street through a small oriel window.
Der spöttelnde Junge (Panská Straße 29) ist eine
sonderliche Statue. Über diese Statue eines geduckten
Mannes an der Hausfassade existieren mehrere
Versionen. Eine davon besagt, dass sie den Hohn über
einen neugierigen Besitzer des anliegenden Hauses
darstellen soll, der durch ein kleines Erkerfenster die
Fußgänger auf der Straße „bespitzelte“.

The well without water. Although the bottom of
the well is below the surface of the Danube river, the
well-diggers were stopped by a 320 cm thick granite
slab. Had they drilled through it, they would have
reached water from the Alps.
Der Brunnen ohne Wasser. Der Brunnengrund
befindet sich unter dem Donauwasserspiegel, die
damaligen Brunnenbauer hörten bei dessen Teufung
bei einer 320 cm mächtigen Granitplatte auf, wenn sie
diese durchbohrt hätten, wären sie auf Wasser aus
den Alpen gestoßen.

The Červený Kameň castle is situated approaximately
45 minutes from Bratislava. The castle is a national cultural
monument, built in the 13th century and is one of the
most visited castles in Slovakia. Its architecture is unique in
the region of Central Europe. The castle holds a permanent
exhibition of historical furniture, weaponry, art gallery and
pharmacy. The incredible cellars of the castle are the
largest in Central Europe and definitely worth a visit.
Previously, they were used for food and wine storage.
Now, thanks to their excellent acoustics, they are used for

Ruinen der Burg Pajštún
Ruins of the Pajštún castle belong to the nicest castle ruins
in Slovakia. The ruins document fame of the 13th century
former royal frontier guardian castle of the Hungarian region.
The castle ruin lies in a limestone reef and therefore a trip to it
can be combined (mainly for children) with a geological
search for fossil imprints. The ruins are a popular tourist
destination and for the hour long hike you will be repaid by
the beautiful Carpathian woods and the incredible view of
the Small Carpathians, Záhorská lowland and Austrian Alps. It
takes approximately 45 minutes by bus from Bratislava to the
Borinka area, where the castle is located.
Smolenice castle and park
Schloss und Park Smolenice
The Smolenice castle is a beautiful and very well known
Slovak castle that lies in the Bratislava region. Previously it
was owned by the Pálffy dynasty. It was built in the 15th
century and has a gorgeous tower in the shape of an
octagon. Although it is not opened to the general public, its
unterirdischen Räumlichkeiten sind ein mitteleuropäisches
Unikat und sicherlich eines Besuchs wert. Früher wurden sie
zur Aufbewahrung von Lebensmitteln und Wein verwendet,
heute werden sie dank der exzellenten Akustik als
Konzertsäle eingesetzt.
Die Ruinen der Burg Pajštún gehören zu den schönsten
Burgruinen der Slowakei. Die Ruinen dokumentieren die
glanzvolle Vergangenheit der im Grenzgebiet liegenden
königlichen Wachburg des Ungarischen Reiches aus dem 13.
Jahrhundert. Die Burg wurde im 17. Jahrhundert modernisiert
und in 1810 von Napoleons Soldaten zerstört. Die Ruinen
befinden sich auf einem Kalksteinriff und so kann man den
Weg, vor allem mit Kindern, als geologische Expedition auf
der Suche nach fossilen Abdrücken auffassen. Die Burg ist eine
beliebte Touristendestination und die Besucher werden nach
einstündiger Wanderung mit einer imposanten Aussicht auf
die Kleinen Karpaten, das Tiefland Záhorie sowie Österreichs
Alpen belohnt. Die Busfahrt von Bratislava nach Borinka, wo
der Weg zur Burg beginnt, dauert ca. 45 Minuten.

A collection of treasures from the distant past of Slovakia
and various archaeological findings from the early Stone age
up to the 13th century. All the exhibits are originals produced
from gold, silver, alabaster and gemstones. The most valuable
exhibit is the Moravian Venus carved from a mammoth tusk,
which is estimated to be almost 25,000 years old.
In der Ausstellung sind Kostbarkeiten aus der früheren
Vergangenheit der Slowakei und verschiedene archäolo
gische Funde aus der älteren Steinzeit bis zum 13. Jahrhun
dert zu sehen. Alle Exponate sind original aus Gold, Silber,
Alabaster und Edelsteinen hergestellt. Das wertvollste
Exponat ist die Venus von Moravany aus Mammutstoß
zähnen, deren Alter auf fast 25.000 Jahre geschätzt wird.

Castle from 13th century, which belongs to the most

pharmacy. Falconry yard with the largest collection of
bird predators in Slovakia is located in neighborhood.

The exhibition presents unique collections of beehives
from 17th century, consisting of relief and figural
beehives, beekeeping tools from various periods of the
Slovak apiculture. Exposition of beekeeping literature
and demonstrations of bee products is a part of the
exhibition. There is a possibility to visit an animal farm
with goats, sheep, pigs, rabbits, poultry within the area.
In der Exposition sind einzigartige Sammlungen von
Bienenstöcken aus dem 17. Jahrhundert, Relief- und
Figuralstöcke sowie Bienenzuchtwerkzeug aus verschiedenen
Zeiten der Entwicklung slowakischer Bienenzucht ausgestellt.

I know that Bryndové halušky look a little funny, but don’t let the strange scent and form of the dish

The Bratislava ZOO is home to 1057 bred animals
representing 143 species. The ZOO stretches on an
area of 3 ha and in it you will find, among other
things, an exposition of Mesozoic reptiles, unique for
the region of Central Europe. In the surrounding
forest the ZOO has built a dinosaur park with 27 lifesize dinosaurs that look and sound like real
prehistoric animals. The exposition includes also a
children’s paleontological playground, an educational
path, and a 3D movie about evolution.

from the station of horse railway, through the historic
center with aristrocratic houses, churches, renaissance
mansion, wooden bellhouse with gothic bell and
renovated gothic St. George’s church. The part of the tour

the visitors discover the solitary church, old chestnut
plantation or vineyard balk. Beech forest hides ruins of a

I’m taking you out tonight! After sunset, Bratislava has a whole different charm, there is no sign
of stress or haste and romance, life and excitement are in the air. For starters, I love to grab a coffee
and discuss politics, media, sports and all the rest of it. Bratislava is a town of half a million people
so you’re bound to bump into a friend or two. These accidental meetings are one of Bratislava’s
specialties and always add fun to my night out. It’s like facebook – but face to face encounter! After
the start up coffee, we’re going to stroll through the old town, or in other words go “bar-shopping”. I like a good
wine place, but if you are a beer fan, go for a pub! After a drink or two I’m ready to dance. And after that … although
I’m pretty exhausted, the party is not over yet!
Watching the sun rise over the river Danube in the hazy, light blue awaking Bratislava completes my night out
perfectly. Hope you have as much fun as I did!
Wir gehen heute Nacht aus! Nach dem Sonnenuntergang ist Bratislava wie verzaubert,
nicht das geringste Zeichen von Stress oder Eile – Romantik, Lebensenergie und Freude sind in der Luft. Zu Beginn
trinke ich eine Tasse Kaffee und plaudere über Politik, Medien, Sport und das Leben. Da Bratislava knapp über
eine halbe Million Bewohner hat ist es gut möglich einem Bekannten auf der Straße zu begegnen. Diese zufälligen
Begegnungen sind eine Besonderheit Bratislavas und sind ein netter und erfrischender Bonus für den Abend. Es
ist wie Facebook, bloß im wahren Leben! Nach dem Kaffebesuch schlendern wir als nächstes durch die Altstadt,
in anderen Worten gehen wir auf einen „Bar-Bummel“. Ich bevorzuge eine gute Weinbar, aber wenn Sie eher ein
Bierfan sind suchen Sie lieber nach Pubs! Nach einem oder zwei Drinks bin ich bereit zum Tanzen. Und danach …
obwohl ich ziemlich erschöpft bin, ist die Party noch lange nicht zu Ende!
Der Anblick der aufgehenden Sonne über der Donau in der dunstigen, in hellblau getauchten aufwachenden Stadt
ist ein schöner Schlusspunkt meiner Partynacht. Ich hoffe, Sie erleben so viel Spaß wie ich!
