FORMULA 3 MACAU GRAND PRIX
FIA FORMULA 3 INTERCONTINENTAL CUP
2011 Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix champion Daniel Juncadella won July’s Masters of Formula 3 (F3 Euro Series/Thomas Suer)
Masters of Formula 3
Reigning Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix champion Daniel Juncadella of Spain dominated
the Masters of Formula 3 at Zandvoort in the Netherlands, winning the race ahead of
Italian Raffaele Marciello and local racer Hannes van Asseldonk.
Eliminated in an accident in last year’s race, Juncadella had no problems this time around
as the favourite got off to a good start allowing him to convert his pole position into an
easy lead. The Prema Powerteam driver continued to increase his advantage, and took the
chequered flag an impressive 7.594 seconds ahead of his team mate Marciello.
Carlin driver Carlos Sainz Junior, who competed in last year’s Formula 3 Macau Grand
Prix, started the race on the front row alongside Juncadella, but was passed by Marciello
at the start and fell back to third. A lap later, van Asseldonk got by the Spaniard and
although Sainz Jr. would close the gap to four-tenths of a second, it was the Dutchman
who claimed the final podium position. Rounding out the top five was German Pascal
Wehrlein with Mücke Motorsport.
Juncadella’s win was in
stark contrast to his Masters
of Formula 3 race in 2011,
where a startline incident
between him and thenPrema team mate Roberto
Merhi put both drivers out
of the race.
Masters of Formula 3
champion Daniel Juncadella

Raffaele Marciello, who
finished second in the race

Q&A with Daniel Juncadella:
The Macau Grand Prix speaks with the reigning Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix
champion and 2012 Masters of Formula 3 champion.
MGP: Congratulations on winning the Masters of Formula 3. Can you tell
us about how felt to win at Zandvoort and by such an impressive margin?
Daniel Juncadella (DJ): It was the perfect weekend actually. Since the
beginning we were very competitive, and I made the pole-position by a big
margin, and the gap was the same in the race. It was simply perfect.
MGP: A lot of news articles talked about your unfinished business at the
Masters of Formula 3 given what happened in 2011. Did you approach the
race in this way or did you completely forget and focus only on this year?
DJ: Of course I thought about last year. It was my biggest defeat last year. So
this time I really wanted to win. I had the experience with the tyres from last
year and I knew the track really well, that was my big advantage.
MGP: As the reigning Macau champion and now having dominated the
Masters of Formula 3, how do you like your chances to repeat success in
Macau this year?
DJ: That would be awesome. I’m not coming to Macau to participate as last
year’s winner, I’m coming to win. I want to win again, it’s the best weekend
of the year, and winning is very, very special.
MGP: What are your thoughts on the Guia Circuit and are you looking
forward to defending your title in Macau?
DJ: The circuit is the best one we have on the calendar. Every driver you ask
would say the same. It’s not only the circuit but also the atmosphere there. It’s
like paradise, you cannot explain it to anyone – they have to live the experience.
So this year I am going to defend the number 1 with all my abilities.
MGP: There aren’t many drivers who have won both Macau and the Masters
of F3. What does that accomplishment mean to you?
DJ: It’s great! Few people have done this. Now I need to win the
championship, then I would have won everything you can win in F3. But
already these two big events are great results for my CV.

One for the History Books
Only three drivers in history have ever won the Masters
of Formula 3 and the Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix in the
same year. Former Formula 1 drivers David Coulthard and
Takuma Sato were the first two to achieve this feat, with
Coulthard winning both races in 1991 and Sato earning
the double win 10 years later in 2001. The most recent
driver to have won both races in the same year is current
V8 Supercar driver Alexandre Prémat, who stood atop
the podium for both prestigious races in 2004.
This year’s Masters of Formula 3 champion Daniel
Juncadella has a golden opportunity to add his name to
this prestigious list. However, it could be argued that he
already has his own Formula 3 “Grand Slam” having won
both races consecutively, just not in the same calendar
year. Should Juncadella repeat his Guia Circuit success
in 2012, he will become the only driver in history to
have won a Masters of Formula 3 and two consecutive
Formula 3 Macau Grands Prix.
The start of the Masters of Formula 3 (F3 Euro Series/Thomas Suer)
FORMULA 3 EURO SERIES
R
eigning Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix champion Daniel Juncadella
of Spain continues to lead the F3 Euro Series at the mid-point
of the season, with 12 races remaining. The 21-year old, third in
last year’s series, will certainly be among the favourites for this year’s 59th
Macau Grand Prix, especially after dominating the Masters of Formula 3
earlier this month (see page 1 for details).
However, a close 5.5 points behind is Juncadella’s Prema Powerteam team
mate, Italian rookie Raffaele Marciello, who has been equally impressive in
his first F3 Euro Series season and is a Ferrari F1 protégé. Third in the points
standings is Briton Will Buller with Carlin, sixth at Macau last year. Mücke
Motorsport’s Pascal Wehrlein of Germany is currently fourth in his debut
F3 Euro Series season, while fellow rookie Sven Müller of Germany rounds
out the top five for Prema Powerteam.
In the triple-header weekend at Norisring earlier this summer, Juncadella
took the chequered flag in the action-packed Round 10, ahead of Buller
and ma-con Motorsport driver Emil Bernstorff. However, Juncadella was
later disqualified and excluded from the results after a collision with
Wehrlein and Marciello, resulting in the Italian’s retirement. Despite
Juncadella’s exclusion, Buller and Bernstorff remained second and third,
respectively, per series’ regulations.
Round 11 saw guest driver Harry Tincknell with Carlin score a lights-to-flag
victory and take his maiden series win ahead of Fortec Motorsport driver
Felix Serralles. Wehrlein finished third and also took rookie honours. The
early stages of the race saw a safety car period after Bernstorff hit the wall
but at the restart, Tincknell retained the lead and finished four-tenths of a
second ahead of Serralles.
In the third and final race of the weekend, Marciello recovered from his
retirement in Round 10 to snatch victory in a wet race ahead of Juncadella
and Serralles. In heavy rain, the first few laps were completed behind
the safety car before racing got underway on the eighth lap. Marciello
grabbed the lead, but as the rain refused to let up, the safety car was
out again on Lap 14 before racing was halted for good on Lap 22. Per
the regulations, as less than 75 percent of the planned 48 laps were
completed, only half points were awarded.

BRITISH F3 INTERNATIONAL SERIES
Briton Jack Harvey leads the British F3 championship with just six races remaining this season
W
ith just six races remaining in this year’s British F3 International
Series, Carlin driver Jack Harvey leads the charge for the
championship with a four-point lead over Fortec Motorsport’s
Felix Serralles. Third in the championship after Rounds 20-23 at Snetterton
is Carlin driver Jazeman Jaafar, eighth in last year’s Formula 3 Macau
Grand Prix.
Briton Harvey, 19, who has yet to race at Macau, took victory in a shortened
Round 21 at Snetterton and with the win took the championship lead over
Puerto Rican Serralles, 20. The race got underway in damp conditions and
was stopped on the ninth of a planned 16 laps after the heavens opened
again. Starting from pole position, Harvey retained his lead at the start and
put in a cautious few opening laps as he adjusted to the tricky conditions,
before pulling out a lead and earning the extra point for fastest race lap.
Serralles hung onto Harvey until the fourth lap, but still crossed the line
second ahead of team mate Alex Lynn, competing in his rookie British
F3 season.

The second race of the
weekend, Round 22, was won
by Harry Tincknell, taking his
third race victory of the season.
Tincknell, who finished 12th
in Round 21 after a puncture,
was awarded pole position
for the morning sprint race
in the reverse grid draw and
managed to make full use of Carlos Sainz Jr. and his Carlin team
his advantage, finishing three celebrate the Spaniard’s fifth win of the
season in the final race at Snetterton
seconds ahead of his Carlin
team mate Jaafar. Australian Nick McBride earned his first British F3 podium
when he finished third in the race, after getting by Hong Kong’s Adderly
Fong, who dropped from third to eighth place two laps from the end.
The final race at Snetterton saw Carlin driver Carlos Sainz Jr., who finished
17th in last year’s Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix, collect his fifth win of the
season. The wet race saw Sainz, who started second behind pole-sitter
Harvey, take control of the race from the start, making a better getaway
than his rival. By the end of the first lap, Sainz had already established a 1.4
second lead and would ultimately win by a margin of 12.4 seconds.
Harvey slipped back to third on the opening lap, one place behind
Serralles, who had started from fourth. While Harvey earned a crucial point
for fastest lap, the Briton was unable to challenge Sainz or Serralles and
now holds just a slender four-point lead in the championship standings.

JAPAN FORMULA 3 CHAMPIONSHIP
R
SS driver Ryo Hirakawa has taken a dominant lead in this year’s Japan Formula 3
championship, having won or finished second in each of the eight races so far
this season. With just five races to go before the championship title is awarded,
Hirakawa, competing in his first season of Japan Formula 3, is the runaway favourite to win.
Hirakawa won both races at
Twin Ring Motegi, extending
his lead to 47 points ahead of
Hideki Yamauchi with B-MAX
Engineering, who competed
in last year’s Formula 3 Macau
Grand Prix. Just one point behind
Yamauchi is Petronas Team TOM’S

ATS FORMEL 3 CUP
S
weden’s Jimmy Eriksson has taken a commanding lead in this year’s
ATS Formel 3 Cup with the Lotus driver leading the championship
by 78 points, with just three race weekends remaining. Over the
past 18 races, Eriksson has scored six wins and although he reached the
podium at the most recent races at Red Bull Ring, Eriksson will be tough
to beat just once with just nine races to go.
Behind Eriksson in second place is team mate Kimiya Sato of Japan, 12th in
last year’s Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix, who despite winning four races of
his own so far this season, did not reach the podium last week in Austria.
Third in the championship standings is Austrian Lucas Auer with Van
Amersfoort Racing, while Eurointernational driver Tom Blomqvist, son of
1984 World Rally Champion Stig Blomqvist, is fourth. Rounding out the
top five is Australian Mitchell Gilbert with Performance Racing. Auer and
Gilbert are both in their rookie ATS Formel 3 Cup seasons.
Round 16 at the Austrian track saw Briton Blomqvist earn his second win
of the season, before repeating his success with a win in the third and
final race of the weekend. In Round 16, Blomqvist started from pole
and defended his lead throughout the 15-lap race to cross the finish
line nearly three seconds ahead of Gilbert and Alon Day of Israel, who
was third.
The second race of the weekend saw hometown favourite Auer, the
nephew of former Formula 1 driver Gerhard Berger, who raced in the
inaugural Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix in 1983, earn his maiden victory
this season. Second behind Auer was compatriot Rene Binder, while Swiss
driver Yannick Mettler finished third in the 14-lap race.
Blomqvist celebrated his second win of the weekend and his third win
of the season in Round 18, with a three second margin over second-
ATS Formel 3 Cup championship leader Jimmy Eriksson
place finisher Auer. Third on the podium was Eriksson, who had a
quiet weekend, but still managed to further tighten his grip on the
championship title.

after starting from pole position. De Oliveira is currently fourth in the championship. Former
Formula 1 driver Kazuki Nakajima, who finished one place behind de Oliveira in fifth position at
the 2005 Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix, leads the championship with three races to go. Behind
Nakajima is his Petronas Team TOM’S team mate and defending Formula Nippon champion
André Lotterer of Germany, who won this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. Third in the standings is
Kodai Tsukakoshi, who finished second in the 2007 Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix.
World Series by Renault Briton Sam Bird, third in the 2009 Formula 3 Macau

the pair set to compete in the new Civic WTCC
cars run by Honda Racing Team JAS.
The European Honda Civic five-door racing
car is currently under development by JAS
Motorsport, while Honda R&D has designed and
built a new 1.6 litre four-cylinder direct injection
turbo-charged petrol engine. Tarquini, who
raced from 1997 to 2001 with Honda and JAS
Motorsport in the British, German and European
Touring Car Championships, has been working
with the works team on the car’s development
this year.

C
hevrolet continued its dominance
of the 2012 FIA World Touring Car
Championship (WTCC) with points
leader and defending champion Yvan Muller
of France and Briton Rob Huff taking one
win apiece at Curitiba. With just eight races
remaining, Chevrolet has won 13 out of 16 races
thus far.
In Race 1 at the Brazilian circuit, Muller started
from pole position and took a lights-to-flag
victory ahead of team mate Alain Menu and
Huff. Italian Gabriele Tarquini attempted to
disrupt the Chevrolet trio at the start but his
efforts were in vain, and the 2009 FIA WTCC
champion had to settle for fourth position.
However, in Race 2, Tarquini led the pack for a
few laps, defending against Huff. The Briton,
however, proved too strong and Tarquini
eventually lost out to race winner Huff, before
Menu overtook him. Tarquini, whose sole race
win this season came earlier in the year at
Slovakia Ring, finished third, ahead of Muller.
The championship resumes next month,
where it will race for the first time in Sonoma,
California. With four events remaining there are
still 220 points on offer and, while Muller holds a
17-point lead in the championship, look for Huff
to be on the hunt for his first FIA WTCC title.
Dane Michel Nykjaer put on a strong
performance in Brazil in the Yokohama Drivers’
Trophy, winning Race 1 and coming in second
in Race 2.
Yokohama Drivers’ Trophy
Hungarian Norbert Michelisz, who won his first
FIA WTCC race in Macau in 2010, has taken over
the lead in the Yokohama Drivers’ Trophy and
now leads young Spaniard Pepe Oriola by just
five points with eight races to go, including
two rounds as part of November’s 59th Macau
Grand Prix. Third in the trophy standings
is Italian Stefano D’Aste, while Briton Alex
MacDowell, competing in his debut FIA WTCC
season, is fourth.

Hutchinson Plans Macau Return
Briton Ian Hutchinson is intending to once again make his return to
competition at the 46th Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix in November.
Hutchinson, third in last year’s Grand Prix, had sustained serious injuries
in Europe in 2010 and, after sitting most of the 2011 season out, made a
spectacular return to competition on the Guia Circuit.
After Macau last year, Hutchinson continued his recuperation but doctors
feared he would require further extensive surgery. However, as the Swan
Yamaha rider requires a smaller operation than previously thought,
Hutchinson is now planning to get back into international competition,
beginning with the Macau Motorcycle Grand Prix and followed by a
season of internationals in 2013.
Duke Road Race Rankings
Ryan Farquhar continues to top the leaderboard in the Duke Road Race
Rankings with just under half a season remaining in the championship
which rewards season-long performance in the world’s most challenging
