By Subway: Although many first-time visitors are intimidated by the massive MTA-operated subway system,
it is still the fastest way to travel around New York City and is the chosen form of transportation for over three
million New Yorkers. Despite the surge of passengers during rush hours (8:00 am–9:30 am, 5:00 pm–6:30 pm
weekdays) the subway system remains quick, efficient and, best of all, an inexpensive $2.25 per ride. Visitors
should be sure to purchase a MetroCard, a thin, plastic card on which the customer electronically loads fares.
The MetroCard can be purchased with cash from any subway station with a manned booth or by credit card
through an ATM style vending machine located in nearly every subway station.
Mit der U-Bahn: Obwohl man sich bei seinem ersten Besuch vom gewaltigen U-Bahnsystem eingeschüchtert
fühlen mag, ist dies die schnellste Art der Fortbewegung in New York City und wird von über drei Millionen
New Yorkern genutzt. Trotz der Pendlerströme während der Rush Hour (8:00-9:30 Uhr, 17:00-18:30 Uhr) ist
die U-Bahn schnell, praktisch und mit $2,25 pro Fahrt auch preiswert. Besuchern wird empfohlen, sich eine
sogenannte MetroCard zulegen, eine dünne Chipkarte aus Plastik, die elektronisch aufgeladen werden kann. Die
MetroCard ist gegen Bargeld an jeder U-Bahnstation mit besetztem Ticketschalter erhältlich oder mit Kreditkarte
von allen Verkaufsautomaten, die sich in den meisten U-Bahnstationen befinden.

operador del metro-MTA, es la manera más rápida de viajar por la ciudad de Nueva York y es utilizada por más
de tres millones de neoyorkinos. A pesar del aumento de pasajeros durante las horas pico (8:00 am–9:30
am, 5:00 pm–6:30 pm entre semana), el sistema del metro permanece rápido, eficiente y, lo mejor de todo,
económico, a solo 2.25 dólares por viaje. Los visitantes se deben asegurar de comprar una MetroCard; una

Pay-Per-Ride cards can be used for up to four people and any amount can be uploaded onto the cards.
However, every time you put $8 or more on your Pay-Per-Ride card you automatically get credited a 15% bonus
of that amount (or one free ride every 5 trips). This card may be the perfect choice for families. Also, up to three
children 44 inches tall and under may ride for free on subways and local buses when accompanied by a fare
paying adult. The Unlimited Ride MetroCard can only be used by one person at a time. A Daily Fun Pass gives a
day’s worth of unlimited rides for $8.25, a 7-Day Metro gives unlimited rides for $27.

By Cab: Cabs are generally best used at night when traveling cross town and aren’t recommended for
visitors during the day when gridlock makes even walking faster. Official New York City taxis are yellow and
you can generally hail a taxi on any street. The cost is 40¢ for every 1/5 mile or 40¢ every 2 minutes in slow or
stopped traffic. There is no extra charge for luggage or additional passengers. Passengers are responsible for
paying the flat rate and any additional bridge or tunnel tolls. A $1 surcharge is also incurred between 4:00 pm
and 8:00 pm and a 50¢ surcharge applies after 8:00 pm–6:00 am. Feel free to ask your driver to turn off the
radio, provide air-conditioning and dictate the route that should be taken. Always ask for your receipt and if you
have an enjoyable ride it’s often polite to tip your driver, though this is never required.

Walking: New Yorkers love walking. Nothing is more New York than putting on a Yankees cap and some
sneakers to hit the sidewalk. In fact, the best way for visitors to view the city during the day is often by walking.
Gridlock traffic, subway delays and a gruesome lack of parking, sometimes make walking the most comfortable
way to enjoy the city specifically Manhattan. Walking is the hands-down, best way to enjoy the little nooks and
crannies of the city you would miss while zooming by in a cab or underground. However, visitors should not try
to walk like the New Yorkers do, weaving in and out of crowds and dodging cars. Be sure to use crosswalks
and play it safe.
Zu Fuß: Die New Yorker gehen gerne zu Fuß. Am Tag ist es für Besucher auch die beste Möglichkeit, die Stadt
kennen zu lernen und so viel wie möglich zu sehen. Auf diese Art und Weise kann man auch Verkehrsstau,

Aboard the Water Taxi, you will enjoy access to a
variety of hotspots around the city, hopping on and

Take the iconic ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
Immigration Museum. Redeem your Explorer Pass at either
CitySights Ticket Desk at Madame Tussauds in Times Square (year
round) OR at Bike & Roll in Battery Park (April 1-Oct. 31) for a ferry
ticket. Museum access is included with your ferry ticket. This ticket
allows you to skip the line in Battery Park before boarding the
ferry but you must wait in the security line which is quite long. We
recommend you arrive early in the morning.
As of October 29, 2011, access to the interior of the Statue
of Liberty will be temporarily limited due to long-planned
improvements. Both Liberty Island and Ellis Island will
remain open and view of the Statue of Liberty will be
unobstructed. Programs and tours will continue to be offered on both islands.
Visitors can participate in ranger-led walking tours of the island, view interpretive
waysides, listen to an audio tour (additional fee), eat at the restaurant or browse through
the gift shop. Admission to the Ellis Island Immigration museum is complementary and
you do not need an additional ticket for admission. Free park ranger guided tours are
available with a scheduled listed daily at the Information Booth. Note: The ticket pickup location at Bike and Roll in Battery Park may be closed during severely inclement
weather. We recommend you call ahead or pick up your ticket at the CitySights ticket
desk when in doubt. Your ferry ticket includes transportation ONLY to Liberty Island
