A new bar opened its doors in downtown Berlin in 1999, intending to give patrons the feeling that
new premises were built around an old bar. This was a matter of conveying lasting value and
tradition. In his designs, Hans Kollhoff from the architectural firm of Kollhoff and Timmermann
focused on the opulence of the selected materials, the attractiveness of their surfaces - many of them
high-gloss and reflective - which create the room—s distinctive atmosphere when combined with the
special lighting effects. The luxuriousness and timelessness of the bar, however, is above all a
function of exacting installation and meticulous craftsmanship when working with such exquisite
materials. For instance, the wall and ceiling panelling on the ground floor as well as that lining the
elevator car is East Indian palisander. The bar, which can be extended out to the sidewalk by
inserting two leaves, was also made from this valuable wood. The block parquet is of smoked oak. A
similar area found upstairs, accessible by a spiral staircase, is appointed with mahogany furniture.
The bar top is also made from this wood, with an infill of pyramid mahogany. Next to the upstairs bar,
visible from the street, a humidor beckons, conceived as a display piece. Its large, fully-climatised
cedar wood cabinet ensures ideal conditions for storing fine cigars. One almost doesn—t realise that
the Newton Bar is actually an angled corner space. Using a long mirror over the seats, the architect
works around the unfavourable space contingencies. Deutsche Werkstätten Hellerau created the
panelling for the wall, into which a Helmut Newton photo series was integrated, and the coffered
palisander ceiling with its intricate cross joints.
