O ur M ission
“Providing community resources to help Highline Public Schools succeed”
A Message from Our PRESIDENT
2012 was a great one for the Highline Schools Foundation and our District!
As the only non-profit organization dedicated to serving all the students in the Highline School District, our Trustees
and staff work hard every day to help ensure that every one of them has the resources they need to get a well-rounded
quality education. We support our students in a variety of categories including innovative classroom learning
opportunities, resources for quality arts and athletic programs, and critical funding so students have the tools they
need to stay in school and be productive. We also provide substantial scholarships to deserving students in need—
so they can pursue their goals of higher education.
This year, we continued to expand
our ability to support education in
the District. To date, the Foundation
had funded $2.32 million to benefit
students in Highline Public Schools,
and by the end of 2013, we will have
distributed another $3.87 million.
In order to continue to this progress,
the Foundation began a Strategic
Planning Process to map out how we
want to grow over the next 5 years.
Expect to hear more about this in the
coming year.

Some exciting things that are worth
noting—we dramatically increased
our online giving presence and the
use of online giving tools. For example, in 2012 we had a 332% increase in funds raised through Seattle Foundation’s
GiveBig over 2011! The Wind Ensemble from Global Connections High School was invited to play at the Inauguration of President Obama and the Foundation was pleased to play a role in helping them raise the funds needed. And
last but not least, we welcomed Dr. Susan Enfield as our new superintendent as she hit the ground running with new
ideas and a contagious passion for the students, teachers, and staff in our district. The Foundation is excited to be
working with her to continue the progress we have made!
On behalf of everyone here at the Foundation, I would like to thank all of our donors, sponsors, volunteers, and
community advocates for your generosity and commitment. Educating our kids is truly a community responsibility
and this community has shown time and again that it is willing to step up and accept it.

HIGHLIGHTS OF 2012
Highline Schools
Foundation For Excellence
Record Amount of Classroom Projects Funded
Nearly $42,000 in grants­—the most in the Foundation’s history­­—were
awarded to support new and innovative learning opportunities in
classrooms throughout our district. Through this “Excel Grant” program,
the Foundation has distributed $275,000 throughout Highline Public
Schools since 2002.
$36,000 in STIA Scholarships Awarded
Three deserving graduating seniors were awarded the Seattle-Tacoma
International Airport Scholarship for a total of $36,000. This needs-based
scholarship is made possible by proceeds from the annual STIA Golf
Tournament held every July, and is put on by volunteer employees of
STIA and HMS Host.
Superintendent Enfield Welcomed
The Foundation Board welcomed Superintendent
Dr. Susan Enfield with both a small dinner for
community stakeholders, and more publicly
by co-hosting the district’s first-ever “State of
the Schools” event at Cedarbrook Lodge in
September.
Global Connections Fundraising Galvanized
The Foundation galvanized the fundraising effort to send the Global
Connections High School Wind Ensemble to play at the Presidential
Inauguration in Washington D.C. with promotions, online donations,
administrative, and monetary support. We were proud to help these
students have this once-in-a-lifetime experience!
Community Honors Received
The Foundation was awarded the Discover Burien “Nonprofit
Organization of the Year,” and, in partnership with Highline School

Brat Trot 2012 - Community Spirit Soared!
The Burien Brat Trot, organized by the Highline Schools Foundation and
anchored by The Tin Room in Olde Burien, brought record participants
(over 1,300) and nearly $60,000 in funds raised to benefit Highline
Schools Foundation and Seattle Children’s/Safe Kids South King County.
District “Scholar-Athlete” Partnership Formed
The Foundation partnered with the
Highline School District Athletic
Department to create the first annual
“Scholar-Athlete Banquet” at which
student athletes were recognized for
their work and commitment to both
school and sports. $14,000 in
scholarship funds were awarded to
well-deserving students at this inspiring event.

WHAT’S NEW IN 2013?
• 150 Highline School District Middle School students will visit Highline
Community College for a half-day “college campus experience” fully
funded by the Foundation.
• One school or program will be awarded $10,000 as winner of the
Highline Schools Foundation’s first-ever IMPACT Grant. The grant
process starts in fall 2013. More information to follow on this exciting
new program!
• The Highline Schools Foundation will unveil a new, ambitious
Strategic Plan which will align with the District’s goals, student and
teacher needs, and our community’s strengths.
