Manchester CARPE Conference • 4 - 6th November 2013
BACKGROUND
 Demographic change = change and new requirements on health
professionals’ work and interprofessional cooperation (WR 2012).
 Midwives, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech and
language therapists are still trained at vocational schools.
German Council of Science and Humanities 2012: 7
“ […] Moreover, courses should be developed which offer attractive
further academic education opportunities to trained, experienced
personnel [in the area of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech
an language therapy, and midwifery] for specialized patient-oriented
tasks and for activities in teaching and health management. […]“
Manchester CARPE Conference • 4 - 6th November 2013
BACKGROUND

for midwives, occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech and
language therapists.
 No robust data for Germany exist on interdisciplinary study concepts,
needs of prospective students and demands of labour market.
Aim

study program by an expert review on expectations,
needs and demands for these health care professions.

RESULTS I : reasons pro and contra part-time study
PRO
„To ensure the continued existence and develoment of midwifery and to get
ready for the changing social demands.“
(12013HAg50)
PRO
„The study enhances professional roles and identities as an important issue for a
continued professionalization process.“
(12013PAg25)
CONTRA
„Focusing only on theory and science and not on individual patients‘ needs.
The loss of practical skills.“
(12013EAn33)
CONTRA
„There is no reason [not to study], however an academic qualified occupational
therapist is not better paid.“
