CURRENT RESEARCH
Monograph on electric guitar distortion in rock music covering three primary issues (in press):
1.
Distortion’s physical and psychological influences on playability and composition within rock music
•
research data: original and experimental recordings of rock music riffs and solos
•
mixed-methods approach:
o musicological analysis of musical structure
o quantitative analysis of spectral (FFT plots) and dynamic (envelope curve, wave form)
sound aspects
o qualitative analysis (spectrograms) of the influence of distortion level on playability and
expressiveness
o psychoacoustic correlation of structural, tonal and perceptual aspects
o physical aspects of frequency and dynamics
2.
3.
Distortion’s relevance for rock music’s aesthetics
•
discourse analysis of pop and rock aesthetics and its historical development
•
musical and production-oriented standards
•
pragmatic, musical, cultural, psychological reasons for rock guitars’ sound and use of distortion
Survey of amateur and professional guitarists on their use of distortion
•
quantitative survey of amateur musicians
•
qualitative survey of professional musicians
•
methods and data triangulation (qualitative content analysis and statistics)
A current extension of the monograph is a project that investigates the influence of distortion on the perception
of chord structures played by the electric guitar. This research follows a multi-methods approach: qualitative
spectrographic analysis, statistical evaluation of psychoacoustic data extracted by music information retrieval
software, and listening experiment. One article, so far, has already been submitted to the peer-reviewed journal
Musicae Scientiae, another will soon be submitted to Psychology of Music.
FURTHER PREPARED RESEARCH PROJECTS
Continuation and extension of PhD research
Adaption of research results from German monograph for international journals
Extension of results: Perception, functions and intentions of technological sound design concerning
•
musical aspects like relation of primary musical parameters (melody, harmony, rhythm) to phenomenal
parameters of sound and timbre
•
performative aspects like authenticity, playability and interpretation
•
psychological aspects like sound perception and emotional influence
•
socio-cultural aspects like the relation of social or ethnical classes on intentional sound design
•
communicative aspects like the way the listener is addressed to by the audio mix
