The new STAR facility at Texas State is now open.
T
he Science, Technology and Advanced
Research (STAR) Park at Texas State
University is a collaborative effort of the
university and research partners serving as a
catalyst for continued public/private development
of new or improved technologies.
Anchored by the STAR One technology business
incubator, STAR Park is currently home to five new
and emerging technology companies, a soon-tobe-opened advanced polymers and nanomaterials
center, Texas State’s Small Business Development
Center and the Office of Commercialization and
Industry Relations.
Current high-profile initiatives at STAR Park
include a $5 million contract with Jacobs to
collaborate on advanced engineering and science
work for NASA’s Johnson Space Center, with
options that could increase the value to $9 million
and extend it through 2022; a partnership with
MicroPower Global granting the company exclusive
use of a Molecular Beam Epitaxy (MBE) system
to produce advanced semiconductor chips; and a
joint effort with Systems and Materials Research
Corporation as well as Texas Tech University to
develop inexpensive, high-quality nanosilicon

applications.
In August of 2014, The Texas State University
System Board of Regents authorized a 20-acre
expansion of STAR Park, which STAR Park Director
Stephen Frayser described as an investment in the
future.
“The expansion of STAR Park from 38 acres to
58.28 acres will increase the university’s ability to
undertake new innovation-based collaborations,”
Frayser said. “Full build-out is anticipated to take
up to 20 years. Upon completion, STAR Park could
accommodate up to 500,000 square feet of office,
engineering and laboratory space.”
Securing additional property adjacent to
STAR Park helps ensure that the university
can expand efforts to increase innovation and
commercialization of technologies developed in
collaborative partnerships with the private sector.
The continued growth and commitment shown by
the university heightens STAR Park’s research and
commercialization profile and makes collaboration
more attractive to the private sector.
Firms locating in STAR Park must be engaged
with Texas State in product research, development,
engineering, testing and/or pilot scale production of
a proprietary product, process or service. Increased
support for student entrepreneurship efforts is also
being planned for the future.
Another significant development in 2014 was the
splitting of a planned expansion of the STAR One
building into two parts. Dividing the project into
phases allows for an expedited construction process.
Previously, the finish-out of six additional labs in
STAR One had been combined with a 16,000 squarefoot expansion of the facility. By splitting those
improvements into separate initiatives, the finishout of the six labs may potentially occur at a faster
pace than the expansion.
Initial funding for the construction of STAR
One was received from the U.S. Department of
Commerce Economic Development Administration
(EDA), the city of San Marcos and Texas State. The
Texas Emerging Technology Fund and the EDA
have provided funding for continued program
development. •

T
he LBJ Museum is an integral piece of San
Marcos history, and a tribute to the president
who studied here. The museum is free to the
public and run on donations and volunteered time,
but the now nine-year-old establishment has grown.
Just last year the museum got a light-up sign to
make the place more noticeable to passerby on the
downtown square and several educational events
took place there.
Lyndon B. Johnson is in a special place in the
hearts of San Marcans and one of the few presidents
to call Texas “home.” Johnson earned his degree
from Southwest Texas State Teachers College (now
Texas State University).
In 1997 a group of citizens created a charter to
become a non-profit organization and display
artifacts left behind by the former president. There
were several historical sites for LBJ fans to visit,
according to LBJ Museum President Ed Mihalkanin,
but none here in San Marcos.
“We have good relationships will all of those
sites,” Mihalkanin said. “People will hear about
us, and then they’re so close, they want to come to
a museum of the town where Johnson graduated
from college.”
Though other sites have valuable and educational
features, the LBJ Museum has a few unique
displays of its own, like a pen collection from late
Congressman Jake Pickle.
“Johnson used those pens to sign about 12 different
laws,” said Mihalkanin, “So we have a really nice
display of that.”
Museum visitors can learn a lot about Johnson
during his college and teaching days. LBJ attended
Southwest Texas State from 1927 through 1939.
During that time he worked for then-University
President Cecil Evans, who later became one of
his strongest backers on his journey to become a
congressman and beyond.
“That’s really why we wanted the museum here,”
Mihalkanin said. “No museum focused on his college
days and his teaching in Cotulla and how those
experiences affected his public life.”

One of the many artifacts is a 1920s school desk
from the elementary school where Johnson taught
in Cotulla.
“The biggest challenge wasn’t with the artifacts,
it was finding a home for the artifacts,” said
Mihalkanin.
The building was originally a movie theater and
when the organization first purchased it, there was
an old concession stand in the main floor and a
projection booth in place. The outside was in dire
need of work as well.
The organization spent close to $280,000
bringing the building up to date and renovated.
That too, came solely from donations. The lighted
sign was donated by Leadership San Marcos, who
chose the sign as a class project. It was designed
by San Marcos local Jay Gordon, who went with
Mihalkanin to the presidential ranch in Stonewall to
look for pieces to make it.
“Jay Gordon was able to incorporate the scrap
metal into the actual construction of the sign,”
Mihalkanin said.
Since the sign has been up the number of visitors
has increased.
LBJ had a profound impact on civil rights, and, as
Mihalkanin explained, the difference is great.
“People simply don’t realize, comprehend, the
system of American apartheid that existed in the
south before the Civil Rights Act of 1964,” he said.
“You had water fountains that said ‘white’ and
‘colored.’ ...(After the Civil Rights Act) nobody could
be denied on account of race, national origin, color,
religion, gender.”
Former Public Relations Director Leah Keyworth
said, “He had an impact on this country whether
it was for good or for bad, it’s up to you, but while
he was president he had great things happening.
The Vietnam War, civil rights. I think that’s what
separates him from other presidents.”
Mihalkanin noted that the civil rights movement
not only affected race, but also women’s rights,
religious rights and other discriminated groups. He
says it opened many opportunities for the country as
a whole.
“If you look at the ripple effect, what seemed to
be impossible to change, the racial disaster called
Jim Crow Laws, it rippled through the Hispanic
American community, the women’s movement,
everything,” he said. “And it made the promise of
America more real.” •

A
s Hays County continues to be among
the state’s fastest-growing, infrastructure
issues continue to be at the forefront of
state and local efforts. That has included bringing
Interstate 35 up to speed, so to speak, both north
and south of San Marcos.
Specifically, the Yarrington Road and Posey Road
intersections with the Interstate are currently
undergoing metamorphoses, along with the access
roads.
The days of two-way access roads are now a
thing of the past. In June of last year, the Texas
Department of Transportation (TxDOT) began
changing the access roads to one-way between FM
150 (Center Street in Kyle) to Yarrington Road, a
distance of almost three miles.
TxDOT officials said the work was necessary for
safety as well as improving the movement of traffic
in the area. The conversions were part of a $12.2
million project to replace the existing Yarrington
Road Bridge and turnaround bridges.
Groundbreaking for the project was in August,
and dignitaries on hand included Hays County
Judge Bert Cobb, Pct. 1 Commissioner Debbie
Gonzales Ingalsbe, Kyle Mayor Todd Webster, San
Marcos Mayor Daniel Guerrero, TxDOT Engineer
Greg Malatek and Bill Hasbrook, President of the
contractor OHL.

between TxDOT, the county
and the cities of Kyle and
San Marcos, and also
include signature bridge
elements of the gateway
bridge program involving
other locations on I-35.
Big changes coming to
the south at Posey Road
will include removing
the existing overpass and
building a new one.
Posey Road is “the last
major intersection along
I-35 in Hays County to
undergo necessary changes
to keep up with our growing population and
increased traffic,” Ingalsbe said in 2014, adding that
she wanted to ensure safety for all those who travel
through the intersection.
“The intersection is critical for continued economic
growth in the area,” Pct. 3 Commissioner Will Conley
said. “Several businesses that would have brought
jobs to the area declined to build there in part
because of the difficult access. I think anyone who
I-35 between the Centerpoint and
Wonder World Drive exits.

has traveled that intersection recently would agree
that it is no longer adequate for the amount of traffic
in the area.”
Other infrastructure projects in the works include
FM 110, what used to be referred to as the San
Marcos Loop. The most southern portion of the
roadway, from Centerpoint Road to Hwy. 123, was
opened last year. Segments still to be built include
FM 123 to Hwy. 80, which will include crossing the
San Marcos River, and Hwy. 80 to I-35 North.

T
hey chose a beautiful campsite: A gravel bar
on the banks of the San Marcos River near
Luling. As the sun was setting, the Coleman
Stove was preparing their supper. Their tent was
ready, as were the sleeping bags. Houston policemen
Jimmy Jones and Lynn Maughmer were in the lead
in the first Texas Water Safari, a 340-mile boat race
from San Marcos to Corpus Christi. It was late April
of 1963.
The race was the brainchild of Frank Brown, the
president of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce.
The year before, Frank had talked his friend “Big
Willie” George into navigating the San Marcos and
Guadalupe rivers to the coast and then traversing the
bays and intercostal waterways to Corpus. Brown
was convinced that such a trip would showcase
those waterways and perhaps bring in some tourism
dollars. They did the trip in a 12-foot semi “v” fishing
boat; they didn’t use a motor. The trip took a month
and they lived off the land, hunting and fishing their
way to Emerald Beach. It was a great publicity stunt,
drawing local newsmen to stops along the course and
at the finish. Frank decided that a non-motorized
boat race, along the same route, under similar
conditions, would generate even more publicity. The
Safari was born.
It was set for April 29, 1963. Contestants would
have 12 days to complete the course: a week to get
down the river and then they would set off in a series
of staged, one day races, to get to Corpus.
Fred Hurd and Sam Hare, a couple of pilots
out of Houston, were also in that first race. They
were somewhere back in the pack, but had also set
up camp. As Fred said, there wasn’t a whole lot of
information available about the course in those early
days. Brown wanted to keep the event as challenging
as possible and make it a real adventure. There
were 10 dams to portage; why not let the racers
believe that there might be waterfalls as well? So
Fred said that everybody was planning to camp at
night. Everybody, that is, except for Fred Halamacek

Fred evidently knew the river better than most of
the competitors, or at least he knew the San Marcos
River pretty well. While other teams were setting up

As they were turning in for the night, Jones
and Maughmer heard a noise in the river. They
discovered that Halamacek and others were paddling
in the dark. They quickly broke camp and the Safari
changed forever. Not just an adventure, but now a
non-stop endurance race from San Marcos to the
coast.
Fifty-eight teams, composed of 120 participants
(most of the teams in that first race were either solo
or two man teams) began that first Safari, but by
the time they reached Austwell on the coast only
19 remained. Then, after several days of strong
headwinds, on May 9, there were only two canoes
left in the race, and one of them was lost.
Fred and Sam had made it to Ingleside, the last
stop before the run across Corpus Christi Bay to the
finish line set for the next day.
But Jones and Maughmer were nowhere in sight. If
they didn’t make it into Ingleside by official sundown
then they would be disqualified.
A couple of outdoor sportswriters, Bob Brister and
Stan Slaten from the Houston Chronicle (Stan had
actually entered the race but had withdrawn after
reaching the coast) along with a photographer
from Life Magazine, were following the event.
Once it was apparent that Jones and
Maughmer were in danger of missing the
deadline, Fred Hurd asked the writers if
they could search for the two policemen and
give them a message. What message? they
asked. Fred said, tell Maughmer “If you were
such a big damn baby, you shouldn’t have
started this race in the first place.”
The writers procured a boat and went

on their search. When they found
the policemen, Jones was passed
out, lying on the beach of the bay,
with most of his body in the water.
Maughmer was lying in the water
facedown supporting himself with
his elbows, vomiting. The two men
had obviously given up on finishing
the race.
After snapping a couple of pictures
(which did, in fact, appear in
Life) Bob Brister delivered Fred’s
message.
At first there was little reaction.
Then they noticed the veins swelling
in Lynn’s neck. Next he rose to his feet and then
he went and lifted Jimmy up. They walked on the
beach for a few minutes to regain their composure,
and then they were in their canoe and heading for
Ingleside.
Sundown was imminent as they approached the
finish line for that day’s lap. In fact, the story goes
that official sundown had occurred. But the race
official asked Fred Hurd what time he had on his
watch and Fred assured them that it was 10 minutes
till sundown.
Jones and Maughmer, who still had a formidable
lead, time wise, over Hurd and Hare, went on the
win the race that next day.
So began the Texas Water Safari. More than a
race; - an adventure. With a history of camaraderie
and sportsmanship. This years race is set to start
from Aquarena Center on June 13. The finish line is
in Seadrift, 260 miles downstream. Motors are still
illegal.

C
ollecting, preserving and interpreting
African-American history in San Marcos and
Hays County is the mission of the Calaboose
African-American History Museum. After 18
months of remaining closed due to budget cuts and
renovation needs, the doors were reopened on Feb.
15, 2015.
Located at 200 West Martin Luther King Jr.
Drive, the museum was founded in 1997 by Johnnie
Armstead who led major renovations in 1990 to have
the building dedicated as a Recorded Texas Historic
Landmark since the history of the building itself
dates back more than a century ago.
The building was constructed back in 1873 as
Hays County’s first jailhouse. Calaboose was a
commonly used term during the time period which
can be defined as a jail or prison. It was later also
used as annex for black prisoners and eventually
purchased by the city of San Marcos in 1885.
“The Calaboose consists of two buildings,” said
Elvin Holt, president of the board for the Calaboose
Museum, during a speech at the grand reopening.
“In 1943, the larger section of the building was
constructed when the building became a USO Club
for black soldiers.”

Hardeman, Holt said. After Hardeman relinquished
the rights of the building, it began to fall into a state
where it needed to be repaired.
“The city announced plans to demolish the
building,” Holt said recalling the period in the
late 1980s. “At that point, Mrs. Armstead stepped
forward and decided that the building deserved to
be preserved. And she led a very successful effort to
save the building from the wrecker’s ball.”
Armstead solicited the help of local businesses
to help renovate the building and was successful in
making it a historic landmark, which continues to
keep it from being demolished, Holt said. Then she
stood before the San Marcos City Council in 1997
and officially founded the museum.

this a viable museum,” Holt said. “We just didn’t

local soldiers that served in World War II. They were
members of the 330th aviation squadron, Holt said.
Other exhibits include a small showcase donated by
Dana Smith, one of the women who first integrated
Texas State University, about the Veterans Vocation
Training School that operated in the community
in the 1940s. There is also another exhibit that
highlights African-Americans in the community who
have been elected to positions.
The entire board put in time and effort to help
fix the place up and move exhibits back in after
renovations were complete. The main issue prior
to renovations was that the concrete floor in the
museum had split and that the foundation was bad,
said board member Linda Kelsey-Jones.
“It opened up kind of like an earthquake,” KelseyJones said. “It’s only so long that you can just put a
rug over it.”
Since the building is owned by the city, they
were tasked with repairing it; however it took a bit
longer than the board expected, Kelsey-Jones said.
But thanks to the help of the Arts Commission and
diversity grants from the city, repairs were finally
able to be made.
The museum currently has a television which
plays a screening of African-American history. The
goal is to incorporate more technology into museum
and offer interactive displays that recount stories
associated with its collections and notable citizens.

e all know San Marcos
has its beautiful river
running through it,
teeming with wildlife and tubers
enjoying the summer sun. What some
San Marcans might not know is the
abundance of hiking trails in and
around town, particularly the 570acre Purgatory Creek Natural Area.
There are several entrances to the
park. One is at the intersection of
Wonder World Drive and Hunter
Road, which is possibly the most
widely known. This enters the
section known as Lower Purgatory,
running parallel to the road a while
before veering off to the dam. Those
who’ve been to the top of the dam
and walked it know the area can be
breathtaking, particularly during the
sunrise, to the song of the goldencheeked warblers in the spring.
Prospect Park is a part of the area
that is closer into town, but still
leads out to the rest of the Purgatory
park, under the Wonder World
bridge. It is accessed on Prospect
Street, a residential neighborhood.
It has a crushed limestone trail for
those who don’t want to traverse the
more natural rocky trails and offers
informational signs and benches.
The “geocache tree” in upper Purgatory is where objects are
often hidden in a hole at the base of the tree.
Upper Purgatory is primarily accessed on
Craddock, just off Wonder World. These trails
are much longer than the Lower Purgatory and
Prospect Park trails for hikers looking to get lost
in nature. Upper Purgatory features an impressive
grotto overhang over the dry creek bed, and hikers’
eyes can skim the tops of trees from atop it or hike
down into the riverbed and up into the cave.

of views and terrain, just waiting to be explored. •

Linda says she also enjoys the smaller market
because there are fewer overlapping acts in the area
and therefore feels it is easier to support the bands
you love without having to choose between one or
the other.
“That’s one thing I’ve found in Austin. When the
booking agents say you can play on a Friday night,
there are 10 equally awesome shows going on, and
you have to compete with those,” she said.
Recently, Linda was able to tour with some artists
she met at South By Southwest and performed
across the country as both part of the band and
as VioLinda. She’s also recently recorded her first
album, “Dichotomy,” which came out August of
last year and recently made her debut at South By
Southwest this spring. •

D
evil’s Hollow is a San Marcos band gaining
ground and catching up after a two-year
hiatus. After exchanging some members
and reuniting at a performance at the Texas Craft
Brewers Festival in 2013, the crew came back with
renewed vigor for the music they play and the Texas
tradition of blues.
Justin Murray is the only original member left.
Murray is the lead singer. Tres Hefter is their
manager who goes above and beyond what the
typical band manager does, attending most
practices, booking shows, giving direction and
managing their publicity. As Murray said, “Tres has
been looking after us since we started.”
“Me and (Murray) were just out of high school
when we started and it was just a thing we did on
weekends,” said Hefter. “I did a much better job with
these guys than I realized I was doing all the time.
We weren’t huge, but we went much further than we
thought we were going to a few years ago.”

years. It wasn’t any sort of disagreement, but Hefter
says they just stopped playing.

Devil’s Hollow came back, more experience than
when they left. Hefter gained experience working for
some venues and their bass player, Jimmy Hartman,
toured Europe and played some events with big acts
like Del Castillo.
“Even having done all that...we were all drawn back
to doing this because we felt it was music that is true
to this area,” says Hefter.
“In any band it’s like being in a marriage or having
a boyfriend or girlfriend, except you’ve got like four
of them. You get real tired of each other sometimes
and some things just never get fixed so you move on
and you get a new boyfriend or girlfriend. It just felt
a little stale,” Murray said. “It was a lot of work and
we didn’t really know what we were doing (the first

work writing, recording and touring.
time). The music part was always the easy part.”
The band describes their style as primarily blues
and funk, with a bit of rock and country. They like
jamming together and producing something with a
groove to it. They are hoping to come out with a CD
this year as well as producing it on vinyl.
“The quality of the musicianship has gotten a lot
better,” says Murray. “The guys that we’ve got in
the band now are high-quality musicians and they
take it very seriously. Even though Tom (Raines)
is a drummer, he knows music. He helps with
arrangement. Everyone’s helping write the songs.”
All the while, Hefter is working on a project of
his own. Recognizing the amount of talent in San
Marcos, he’s been setting up his own management
business. So far he’s got a few bands he’s working
with, in addition to Devil’s Hollow, including Aaron
Stephens and Daniel Thomas Phipps, both of San
Marcos. He’s optimistic that San Marcos’ unique
music scene will continue to grow.
“I love San Marcos. I’ve been here about eight years
now and I have a lot of hope for the city,” he said.
“I see San Marcos kind of being what Denton is to
Dallas, seeing it sort of as a sister market to what
Austin is. Austin is such a big market, but it’s being
squeezed out, it’s super competitive, it’s extremely
expensive. The more expensive rent becomes in
Austin, the harder it becomes for musicians to live
in Austin, the more musicians start living in San
Marcos and Buda and Kyle. Eventually you’ll see that
start to translate to more of a music scene here.”
The bottom line, he says, is that people want to hear
good music.
“We’re at a good spot, an opportunity here to help
usher in that golden era of live music and culture
and grow with San Marcos as it grows.”

here can you go to get a home cooked
meal, complete with tea or coffee and
a delicious dessert served on real china
with real silverware, at a table featuring fresh
flowers as the centerpiece, brought to you by a
friendly server whom you don’t even have to tip, and
all for just $8?
Only one place in San Marcos offers all this, plus
a generous serving of small-town charm and local
history on the side: The Cottage Kitchen.
Located in the Charles S. Cock House Museum
at 400 E. Hopkins Street, the Cottage Kitchen has
been a tradition in San Marcos for almost 40 years.
It is Operated by the Heritage Association of San
Marcos and lovingly managed by the Heritage Guild.
The Cottage Kitchen serves lunch from 11 a.m. until
1 p.m. on Fridays (closing only during July and
August and on some major holidays).
Those who stop by the quaint little house for lunch
include a delightful mix of folks, from the “regulars,”
who make it by just about every week, to the merely
curious, who finally decide to give it a try. The
uninitiated might come in as customers, but they
leave as friends . . . and more often than not, they
pledge to return as soon as possible.
Jean Baggett, chair of the Heritage Guild for 2015,
recalls her first visit to the Cottage Kitchen when she
moved to San Marcos in 2008.
“My realtor Janette Ramsay had befriended me
and said she needed to take me to lunch at a great
meeting place in San Marcos,” Ramsay said. “We
drove up to the Cottage Kitchen, and it was bustling
inside. We sat at a table with strangers, who were no
longer strangers when we left. I am very humbled
to now be the chairperson of such a wonderful
tradition in San Marcos.”
The long history of the Cottage Kitchen began in
the early 1970s when Frances Stovall, Tulia Wyatt
and other local historians initiated an effort to
preserve the Charles S. Cock House. Built in 1867,
the house had become the first building in the city
to be placed on the national register of historic
places in 1973. Yet, it was a structure in dire need of
restoration.

In 1975, the Texas Historical Commission allocated
$15,000 to the city to fund the preservation,
prompting the City Council to add another
$20,000. Additional funds came from the American
Revolution Bicentennial Administration and the
local Bicentennial Commission, and work on the
home began in 1975.
A formal opening and dedication ceremony marked
the completion of the project on April 9, 1976, and
the first Cottage Kitchen lunch was served later that
month by the “Bicentennial Belles,” a group of local
ladies who had come together to support all the
city’s bicentennial activities.
Bobbie Gilbert, leader of the “Belles” and the
inaugural chair of the Heritage Guild, said the first
Cottage Kitchen lunches included a light menu of
sandwiches, soup and dessert for $1.50 a plate.
The Belles would wear full-length calico prairie
dresses and white eyelet aprons to serve the meals.

As the number of customers grew,
additional volunteers were needed, so
the Guild reached out to neighborhood
groups, churches and civic organizations
to help plan and serve meals. The
Cottage Kitchen continues to rely on
these volunteer groups today.
“I think it’s unusual for a community
enterprise like this to be successful for
so many years,” Gilbert said. “But the
food is special, it’s done in an attractive
way, and the price is reasonable. People
like the uniqueness of the place, and for
new people, it gives them a feel for the
history and culture of San Marcos.”
Dorothy Renfrow, who was also a
Bicentennial Belle, agreed that the
appeal of the Cottage Kitchen is the
story it tells.
“Keeping the little house there appeals
to me and to anyone who loves history,”
Renfrow said. “People like it because it
tells some of the history of San Marcos.

That’s the way it was for Jackie Cable, a past
president of Heritage, and her late husband, Ed
Cable. For many years, Jackie said she and Ed
made it a routine to eat at the Kitchen every Friday.
“He would get up Friday morning and go out and
play golf, and I would clean the house and then
we would meet for lunch at the Cock House,”
Cable said. “Each time we would see friends, and
we would all end up together at the table that sits
six, but we usually ended up with several more
squeezing in around the table.
Hosting a luncheon at the Cottage Kitchen can
be hard work, but those who volunteer consider it a
labor of love. Beverly Owen, who served in January
with the Mountain Laurel Garden Club, said she has
fond memories of working at the Kitchen years ago
with her mother, Edith Gunn, and her sister, June.
“I was teaching at the time and wasn’t able to help
very often, but I do recall taking off work when my
mother would ask me and my sister to come and
serve, and of course we had to wear the appropriate
long dress or long skirt and apron,” Owen said.
“There is something special about working
together with friends or family and sharing that
kind of camaraderie,” Owen added. “And being
from San Marcos, I have grown to be very fond of
that little house.”
Judging from the crowd of people who continue
to show up for lunch week after week, she is not the
only one. •

he Wittliff Collections at Texas State
University is all about inspiring art
and creation in connection with the
Southwest. The Collections, founded by Bill
Wittliff, feature art, books, drafts, photography,
video archives and other mediums.
The place does not only evoke the Southwest
with its art, but Spanish tile imported from
Saltillo, Mexico and wood from Texas Longleaf
Pine, which made many early homes in the area.

produced playwright as well,” says Miller. “He keeps
everything, so his archive in particular, whether
you’re a fan of his work or not, it is interesting
because you can see the first notebook of notes that
he’s taken, sometimes while he’s driving down the
highway.”
The Collections also have a “Lonesome Dove” exhibit
— a tribute to the mini series written by Wittliff
himself, based on Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize
winning Novel. The series still has a fan following
25 years later, Miller says, and they see a consistent
stream of people who come in just to see it.
“Lonesome Dove” is a collection that Wittliff holds
most dear. He says he and the cast had a great time
making the series, and seeing the exhibit brings him
back to those good times.
“(‘Lonesome Dove’) was a really important
adventure for me in my life, making that mini series,”
Wittliff said. “I love to go in there, of course because
of all the artifacts and transcripts. All the artifacts are
like old friends.”
Miller says what they use to sum up the library is the
phrase “Spirit of Place”, which means to see how the
artists have translated their experiences in the region
into art. And many of those experiences are from
Central Texas itself, where Texas State students learn
and grow.
“I love for (our collections) to be on display and for
people to see them, and see what those exhibits do
for people,” says Wittliff. “And it’s not just for new
writers but writers in their career, who are maybe
burned out. I love that when it gets somebody in their
mid-years, and it gets them to reach a little deeper.” •

O
n any given day, the old schoolhouse might
ring with the laughter of children. Or, the
sounds of mariachi music might fill the
air — perhaps accompanied by the aroma of savory
tamales.
In just a few short years, the Centro Cultural
Hispano de San Marcos has transformed not only
the building in which it is housed by the spirits of
countless children and adults who have benefitted
from its many programs and activities.
Children’s activities include after-school tutoring,
art classes, mariachi music and folkloric dance and
special events like crafting sugar skulls for Dia de los
Muertos, or ornaments at Christmas, or learning to
use a 3D printer.
Adults routinely enjoy the rotating art exhibitions,
classes in making tamales and Dia de Los Muertos
altars.
Each rotating art exhibit — featuring home-town
talents as well as some from far away — kicks off
with a reception; and other special events have
included the recent exhibition on the life and work of
Cesar Chavez.
The Centro was also involved in the February
tribute to Eddie Durham, world-famous jazz
musician who was born in San Marcos; and was
a stop on a tour of local places conducted in
Mayor Daniel Guerrero speaks, with him (from left) are

Experience: “Exploring Democracy’s Promise: From
Segregation to Integration.”
The Centro was long just an idea to founder Ofelia
Vasquez Philo and others. It only came to fruition
when the building, the former Bonham School at
211 Lee Street, became available through a deal with
the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School
District.
At first, Centro activities used only a portion of the
facility but as programs have expanded so has the
space, with current activities taking up all the old
classrooms plus portable buildings.
Its mission is “to serve as a community beacon
for the preservation, development, promotion and
celebration of the Hispanic arts, culture, heritage
and values,” its website says.
Funding relies heavily on donations, and
administration is by a board of directors that
currently consists of President Arturo Benavides;

n a small town like San Marcos where the
number of students enrolled at Texas State
University rival that of the resident population,
maintaining a good relationship is imperative.
Bobcat Build has been the university’s response
to building community relations with the city and
surrounding areas for 13 years.
Known as the second largest student-run
community service event in the state of Texas, more
than 4,000 students, faculty and staff are expected
to participate in the 13th annual Bobcat Build on
March 28, said Lindsay Watson, director of Bobcat
Build.
“Our basic mission is to say thank you to the
community of San Marcos and the surrounding
communities for housing all of us rowdy college
kids,” Watson said. “It can’t be easy for the
community members, so this is our way to give back
to them.”
Student organizations and other groups volunteer
at more than 250 job sites around the area which
consist of painting the homes of residents, outside
beautification, working with nonprofit organizations
and other jobs. Watson said they tend to do more

to use power tools for liability reasons.
“Raking leaves, laying grass, moving rocks, trees
and stuff like that. It’s a lot of manual labor hands
on work since we do have, in San Marcos, kind of an
older population. That’s a huge chunk of our job site
base,” Watson said.
Of course, this service includes more than just San
Marcos residents. Watson said they’ve had job sites
in other places such as Martindale, Wimberley,
Driftwood, Buda, Kyle and New Braunfels due to
proximity and since there are also students who live
in those areas.
During the 2014 Bobcat Build, there were around
4,000 volunteers, which is the most they’ve ever had
since its inception. The way the organization raises
awareness is mainly by word-of-mouth and use of
social media in order to publicize the event and get
volunteers.
Similarly, awareness is also spread throughout the
community so that homeowners can enlist the help
of the organization. Applications can be filled out

t’s been almost a year since the debut of
“Yakona” at Austin’s South by Southwest Film
Festival, and the cinema verite documentary
has continued to impress audiences wherever it
has shown — and most of those showings had a few
awards attached as well.
The Record sat down with Kevin Huffaker, one of
the film’s producers, to discus the impact of the film
that tells the story of the San Marcos River through
the river’s own eyes — from the time of the earliest
human encampments to events as recent as the
flood of Oct. 31, 2013.

That includes some tumultuous times for the river
and Spring Lake which is its spring-fed source.
A good portion of the film, for example, shows
the deconstruction of the old Aquarena Springs
Amusement Park that featured Aquamaids and
swimming pigs frolicking in the pristine water as
tourists watched from a “submarine theater.”
“What was really surprising is how it’s hit home
outside of San Marcos. That’s been the greatest
surprise, how it’s received by people that don’t have
the context of our local community,” Huffaker said.
“The greatest evidence of the success of the film is
that it’s well understood by people who don’t know
San Marcos.”
Cinema verite means “pure cinema” and reflects
that there is no narration to “Yakona,” instead an
original score by Austin composer Justin Sherburn.
Huffaker said cinema verite fans exist world wide
and have embraced the film.
“People who understand what pure cinema is are
looking at this film as a great current example. That’s
really nice. You don’t see a lot of films that take the
risk of doing pure cinema that have that success. It’s
nice to have the global community look at the film
and say it’s one of the better examples of pure cinema
that we have right now. It’s a great compliment to the
narrative and the choices the directors made.”
He also spoke about the film’s score, which won Best

Huffaker said there are almost too many people
to acknowledge in bringing Yakona to fruition.
An Indiegogo campaign helped to enable
the movie in it’s finishing stages and certain
individuals stepped up with cold cash.
He particularly wanted to recognize Sam Trim,
another producer who has made the “largest
single investment” in the film.
Those who have seen it, and watched the credits
roll on and on, saw their own names on the
screen because of a donation of as little as $10.
Producers also credited the San Marcos Daily
Record for the paper’s extensive coverage of the
film.
“Just looking at the credits, it’s hard to wrap
my mind around the fact so many people were
involved,” he said. •

ummer will be here soon and the San Marcos Public Library, with its generous sponsors San Marcos Kiwanis and Friends of the
Library, are planning a spectacular series of free
events for the summer reading program.
This year’s theme is “Be A Hero: READ!” and the
library’s summer calendar is filled with both special
events and weekly programs sure to delight kids of
all ages.
Children may pick up their calendar of events in
May and reading logs will be available at the library
on June 8. The library promises a summer full of
exciting programs and reading adventures.
The summer will kick off with a fabulous show
from the Austin Zoo with Safari Greg bringing a variety of local and interesting species. Other special
events include a kids’ concert with entertainer, Joe
McDermott in June and Matt Tardy’s sensational
juggling extravaganza visits in July.
There will be free tickets for multiple performances available two weeks before each show date.
Regular weekly activities feature Storytime and
Lego Mania, plus Art Experiments and Awesome
Activities designed for children aged seven to 12.
Favorite Storytime stars like “Madeline”, “Curious
George” and “Arthur” will be featured every Tuesday and Thursday at 10 and 11 a.m. for preschool
aged children.
Puppet productions, visits with San Marcos Firefighters, crafts, and workshops with local experts
throughout the summer will keep children of all
ages learning and having fun. Every Tuesday night
at 7 p.m. is Family Night at the library with puppet
shows, stories, special events and more.
Children can win prizes for reading by keeping
track of the books they check out and turn in a book
log after 240 minutes of reading, or being read to.
Each time a reading log is turned in, kids receive a
reading certificate and a drawing slip for the grand
prize drawings at the end of the summer. What better way to turn your child on to reading?

L
ocated between Austin and San Antonio, San
Marcos is seen as a booming hub world for
economic prosperity where new businesses
and ideas can flourish. In 2014, a Michigan-based
automotive supplier saw the potential in the city
and set up shop with the expectation of bringing
120 jobs.
Opening its doors and beginning operations on
Jan. 6, 2014, Corvac Composites, LLC is a tier one
automotive supplier that decided to come to San
Marcos. The company has 30 years of experience
in the business and they have four other locations
in the United States and five other locations
throughout the world in Turkey, Germany, Italy,
Japan and China.
Products manufactured by the company are
made with the intent to lower the noise frequency
of vehicles and utilize recycling methods to be
environmentally friendly, with customers that
include Toyota, Honda, Fiat and Chrysler. Parts are
also made as light as possible for weight reduction
to improve the vehicle fuel economy and lower
costs.
As of February 2015, Corvac Composites has
been able to bring around 60 new jobs to the city,
said Jed Ciudaj, plant manager of the San Marcos
location. He estimates that over the next few years,
they should be able to reach the 100-job-mark and

“Based on what our targets are for growth, I think
that is very feasible, the prospect of surpassing 100
jobs,” he said.
The company worked closely with the Greater
San Marcos Partnership (GSMP) when they
were in the midst of locating to the city, which is
the partnership that is focused on job creation
and increased investment in Hays and Caldwell
Counties. Adriana Cruz, president of the GSMP,
said initially they were expecting for the company
to only bring 30 jobs.
“When they did their grand opening in November,
they already had 60 jobs,” Cruz said. “They
announced at that grand opening that they’re
adding a second line, so they’ll go up to about 120
jobs.”
As a manufacturing company, they do most of
their training at the location, however they have
also been working with Gary Job Corps, Cruz said.
She added that a company like this brings a variety
of opportunities to the city by offering job positions
for people such as engineers, as well jobs for those
who don’t have a four-year college degree.
Koyo Steering is another automotive supplier for
Toyota located in Georgetown, but another similar
supplier hasn’t been seen in the Austin Metro area
for many years until Corvac Composites, Cruz said.

“We’re very fortunate and one of the reasons we
were excited about this, this is only the second Toyota
supplier to come in to the Austin Metro since 2003,”
she said. “We’re very hopeful that this is sort of the
start of that supplier base of an automotive industry
here.”
The company and Toyota have a very close business
relationship, with aligners and other parts being
made for their Tacoma and Tundra vehicles, Ciudaj
said. With a Toyota plant located in San Antonio, one
of the main reasons for locating to San Marcos is so
they could be closer to that location.
“The level of business we’ve been doing with them,
now was just the right time to expand into the
Southwest and primarily get close to Toyota in San
Antonio,” Ciudaj said.
However, he also gave credit to Texas State
University being another important reason the
company decided to open their site in San Marcos.
“We’re always looking for a well-educated
workforce,” Ciudaj said. “It doesn’t necessarily mean
that it has to be university educated, but I think that
Texas State was a good draw. In fact, I know it was.”

According to Cruz, the process of getting the
company to move here started with the company
requesting information about the city, which GSMP
provides it. Afterward, the head of operations visited
with the partnership and a professor from Texas
State, which she believed sealed the deal.
“The VP of Operations really bonded with the Texas
State professor,” Cruz said. “They talked about
research they’ve done together, people they knew
from the University of Michigan… and so I think the
VP of Operations felt comfortable and confident in
the workforce they were going to find here and the
partner that they could find here.”
For now, Corvac Composites is focused on doing
their job and hopes they can contribute to the bigger
picture. Ciudaj is more than satisfied with the current
amount of success they’ve been able to have since
beginning operations in the city.
“Business is good. Business is growing and at the
rate we expected it to,” Ciudaj said. “And we have
great hopes for the future based on establishing
ourselves here in the Southwest market.” •

trip back to the 1950s not so far away as
it seems. Dick’s Classic Car Garage has
cars and memorabilia from the “golden
years” of car manufacturing, and cars you won’t
see anywhere else.
Dick Burdick built the establishment in

Texas. Burdick is also the founder of Thermon
Manufacturing, and during the course of the early
years of his business, came to acquire a black

greeting visitors upon entry. “That’s what started the
addiction,” said Brian Pauli, the managing director of
the Garage.
Burdick’s first museum was right next to his house
in Rosanky. He started collecting cars and fixing
them up, and opened the display to the public.
Since the 1980s, Burdick has lived in San Marcos,
and according to Pauli, he visits the museum about
every other day.
The year range of the cars is from 1929 to 1960.
“I was born in 1929 and that was a good year to
start,” Burdick said to Bibb Underwood for the
Record last year. “And 1959 was is the last year the
car companies built real pieces of art to put on the
road. Beginning in 1960 with the more stringent
safety regulations and other government imposed
criteria, automobiles all looked alike. When I was a
youngster, we all knew a 1939 Cadillac from a 1940
Oldsmobile. A 1950 Pontiac was easily discernible
from a 1949 Chevrolet.”
The Model T in the foyer is the first car
Dick Burdick ever collected.
Many of the cars are one-of-a-kind and some
have been owned by famous people and some have
appeared in films.
One unique car is the 1948 Tucker Torpedo with
less than one mile on it, and the last of its kind to be
produced.
“There hadn’t been any new designs because every
manufacturer and automotive industry had switched
to the war effort...So when everyone came back from
WWII in ‘46 they didn’t have anything new to offer,”
Pauli said.
But Preston Tucker created his own new
automobile. While the other manufacturer’s ‘46
model cars looked the same as the ‘40 and ‘41
versions, Tucker’s was an all-new design.
A 1988 movie, “Tucker: The Man and His Dream,”
was made based on Tucker and plays on a loop next
to the display.
Other memorabilia is displayed in the museum
including old hood ornaments, bicycles, old radios
and more.
“We try to show the current generation what they
used to have for entertainment and what they would
see in daily life,” said Pauli.
The Garage also hosts Cruise In Nights every third
Saturday of the month, which are free and open to
the public. Even the museum is free and open for
viewing during these events. Food is always available
and the Cruise Ins often feature live music.

San Marcos High School’s new stadium is
something to be proud of.

magine never having a stadium
to truly call home throughout
your history — and then watching
slowly but surely as such a place was
built.
That’s what San Marcos High School
experienced this past fall as its new
home was constructed brick by brick.
“As long as I can remember, we have
never had a place we can truly call
home,” SMHS booster club president
Rita DelaRosa said during the
stadium’s ribbon-cutting ceremony.
“As you step into this new stadium,
you can feel a sense of pride — Rattler
pride.”
It was an important moment in this city’s history
when October, 17, 2014, finally arrived. After all,
it had been a long time coming for San Marcos.
And the fact that Rattler Nation had to wait a
little while longer than originally expected didn’t
take away from the excitement of game day.
In front of a packed home grandstand filled with
an overabundance of Rattler purple, the varsity
football field took the field at San Marcos Toyota
Rattler Stadium for the first time.
The game itself — the Rattlers faced KerrvilleTivy — seemed inconsequential on that Friday
night. It took a back seat to the pomp and
circumstance of a stadium debut. There was a fly
over of World War II aircraft and the unfurling of
a field-sized American flag.
Just before kickoff, some players turned around
from the bench and watched the crowd that had
gathered. You could feel the sense of pride they
had.
It was probably one of the biggest events of the
year. •

or 22 years, San Marcos has been the
location of CFAN, a state of the art facility
that manufactures composite fan blades for
thousands of Boeing planes and has become a leader
in the industry by implanting advanced composite
technology.
The creation of CFAN began in 1991 as a jointventure between two leading aerospace companies,
GE Aircraft and SNECMA. With most fan blades
being heavy at the time, causing more fuel use and
technical issues, the goal was to create a wide chord
composite fan blade for the GE90 engine, which
powers the Boeing 777 airliner, said Benoit Cloutier,
president of CFAN.
After a few years of exploring the technology of
composite fan blade manufacturing in the laboratory,
CFAN was able to deliver their first production of
the in 1994 called the GE90-94B. However, in 2001
began production of a composite fan blade for the
GE90-94B fan blade.
“You go from 94,000 lbs. of thrust to 125,000 lbs. of
thrust,” Cloutier said about the 2001 model. “This is
the most powerful engine in the world. And we’re the
only site in the world that’s manufacturing this.”
By 2005, after leveraging all the technology and
information learned from previous models, the
next generation was created and the GEnx1B was
introduced to be used on the Boeing 787 and in
2007, the GEnx2B for the Boeing 747-8. According to
Cloutier, typical titanium fan blades have 36 blades,
while these models have 18.
“You’re taking out weight… and you’re not losing
efficiency,” Cloutier said. “You’re providing the
airliners with a better product that they can actually
benefit from in terms of fuel consumption.”
Decreasing the amount of noise produced by
engines is another goal of CFAN’s because it allows
for airliners to have authorization to fly over airports
and other monitored areas for a longer period of
time. The technology in these engines allows for that.
Cloutier said pilots have commented how quiet it
is when they are flying.
Recently, Boeing has announced their new plane
called the 777X. CFAN has been awarded the
opportunity to produce the fan blades for this
plane called the GE9X. The engine will further
lighten the weight to reduce fuel consumption.
“That’s a big win for us. We’ve been working on
that fan blade for four years,” Cloutier said. “It’s
supposed to be in service in 2018, so you can see
that it’s a long range process.”
With more then 500 employees, each fan blade
is essentially hand crafted in the 270,000 sq. ft.
facility that has a setup designed to manufacture
a blade from one station to the next. More then
30,000 blades have been produced by CFAN, and
it’s sleek and curvy design has even earned it a
spot in the Museum of Modern Art.
More then 1,700 pieces of carbon fiber sheets are
laid on each other, verified, cured and checked for
dimensions and other details. Everything is done
in house, and the facility can also perform minor
repairs and refurbishing. There’s also an area to
train new employees.
Within the composite manufacturing world,
CFAN has been perceived as a leader, Clouiter
said. It’s not a rare circumstance for the company
to be sending over some of their own workers
to other composite sites in the supply chain to
try and help them out since they’ve been at it for
many years.
The company has been involved with the
community and helps sponser the American
Heart Association’s San Marcos Heart Walk,
donating to School Fuel and helps other local
organizations. Cloutier says he is excited to be
part of the community and hopes to continue
being a leader in the manufacturing world with
their latest project.
“It’s the contribution of everybody we have here
that made it possible,” Cloutier said in regards to
the latest fan blades they’ll be manufacturing for
the Boeing 777X. “Composite is definitely the way
of the future for the aircraft.” •

an Marcos High School offers more than 20
different certificate programs students can
take in order to graduation with qualifications
such as manufacturing, construction, healthcare
science and other areas to better prepare them for
college and their future careers.
In 2014, 286 certificates were earned by students
according to Career and Technical Education
Coordinator for SMHS, Mike Doyle. There are 15
Career and Technology pathways included in these
certificate program options. Others pathways include
culinary arts, agriculture science and health and
human services.
The number of students involved in each of these
programs is spread out, Doyle said. There isn’t
one necessarily dominant over the other, and each
program offers its own benefits.
“In our construction science, and also in our
manufacturing and agriculture pathways, we
have many students who complete the OSHA 10
certification,” Doyle said.
OSHA is a safety protocol certification used
whenever somebody goes into a business that
requires hands on labor such as manufacturing.
Programs use this protocol to ensure students are
learning properly and passing nationally recognized
standards. In 2014, there were 101 OSHA 10
certifications.
A popular certificate pathway offered in their health
science program is a certified nurse assistant (CNA).
There were 21 students who received their CNA
license in 2014.
Building trades is another highlighted area that
the high school offers. A national basic carpentry
program is offered to engage students in the early
stages of construction. There were around six
students who received this certification in 2014.
“The growing trend of career and tech education
over the past five to eight years throughout the
state of Texas… is to get high school students career
ready,” Doyle said about why the high school offers
the programs.
Kelli Lopez, principal of SMHS, added that it gives
students hands-on experience in a field they desire
and also gives them a head start to find employment
quicker than others who haven’t completed a
program and received certification.
As an example, Doyle mentioned that those students
who earn a CNA license are given the opportunity to
work in that job while they are attending community
college or a four year university to get their registered
nurse certification.
“It’s a higher paying job than your fast food places
and things like that,” Doyle said. “And also while
they’re working as a CNA they’re getting that
real world experience so whenever they do, they
elevate in their nursing license, they have that work
experience.”
The process to get into each program, as well as the
teaching methods, vary, Doyle said, however most
require some kind of application process such as the
CNA program, which is taught at a junior grade level.
Students go to nursing homes for practice in this
program, so maturity is necessary.
Students in the construction science program (who
can be freshmen or sophomores) will be taught
by OSHA 10 standards before they can go into a
workshop.
“It’s driven based upon the student’s career interest,
the pathway they select and their overall career goal,”
Doyle said.
Even those that don’t require an application process
still have certain criteria that must be met, Lopez
said. This includes campus, local and legal criteria
such as certain hours of completion in any given
area.
One of the newest programs being offered is in
Victor Garza at Career Day.

cosmetology. At the end of it, students will earn
their Texas beautician license, Doyle said. Due to
the hours needed, it takes two years to complete, but
otherwise students learn the same skills they’d learn
from a cosmetology school.
Another recently added program is emergency
medical technician training. Lopez noted that since
many of these programs are so new, it’s tough to
track current success rates after graduation, but
they do hope to see it in the future and there is one
student who was able to work at a fabrication site
outside of San Antonio due to the program.
“These students are committed and they’re
dedicating a lot their time to put into these goals,
whether it’s long-term or short-term,” Lopez said.
Doyle also has his own ideas and goals of what he’d
like to see the certification program transformed into
in the future.
“One of my tasks is bridging the gap between our
students and the local work force,” Doyle said. “One

of my goals is for senior level career tech courses to
get on-the-job training.”
He and the teacher for culinary arts have already
met with people from Embassy Suites. Their goal is
to have students working at this site by 2016 as part
of the course for on-the-job experience. •

United
Way
T
he United Way of Hays County’s
mission is to advance the
common good by investing in and
developing programs that address critical
needs in education, income and financial
stability and health in Hays County.
In 2014, the United Way of Hays County
took over the long-standing Early Readers
Become Leaders Book Drive, and rather
than focus on donated books, they sought
donations to buy new, identical books for
Pre-K school children in the San Marcos
Consolidated Independent School District
and other areas.
The success of the campaign has been
overwhelming and immediate as more
than $6,000 was raised specifically for the
Early Readers program, and to date more
than 750 children have received four new,
age-appropriate books each — in English
and Spanish plus a literacy kit.
In addition, all 20 Pre-K teachers in San
Marcos C.I.S.D. received a set of 10 books.
In addition to their work with education
in our community, the United Way of
Hays County continues its focus on the
health of the community by supporting
access to preventative programs and
the organization also focuses on helping
families become financially stable and
independent.
It’s no small task, but the United Way
of Hays County and its partner agencies
continue to do their best to Live United. •

It all starts with water. Eighty-five percent
of the water used to wash cars is recycled.
The system used to clean the water is 3,000
times faster and 15 times as powerful as
chlorine, and leaves no residual chemicals

city tap — it comes from the sky.
The roof of the wash and lube center
are designed to capture as much water as

this business started — 56 years ago — you’d

his story began in 1905 when West
Texas ranchers joined forces to open
Crockett County’s first bank in Ozona,
Texas. Local citizens of the community lined
