Identification of oil spills by satellite
Schif f fahr t und Umwelt Identification of oil spills by satellite Olaf Trieschmann Illegal marine oil discharge is a large threat for the marine environment. With the integrated satellite and airborne surveillance, based on remote sensing techniques, most of the oil spills can be detected. The information is used by local authorities for decision making processes on clean-up operations and for providing evidence against potential polluters, which finally shall reduce the rate of illicit oil spilling. This paper will describe the oil spill detection capabilities from satellite and in particular the EMSA CleanSeaNet service. Finally it will provide an outlook of what could be expected in the future focusing on operational usability.
