The name of this band is the name of the game: A solid rhythm basis of
powerful bass lines and tight drumming, artistically complemented by
keyboard pads, skillfully applied samples and scratches, tastefully decorated
with improvisations by excellent soloists. Trance Groove is obviously inspired
by bands like Can - the band members knew each other quite well -, and
at the same time a mothership for bands like Nighthawks, Rainmaker
and Trance Club among others.

Founding member Stefan Krachten (drums, percussion) is well known through
Dunkelziffer, Walk of the Elephants and The Unknown Cases which had a
major hit in 1984 with the dance classic “Masimbabele” - one of the first
Worldmusic hits (remixed 1989 by Adrian Sherwood). Krachtens drum playing
is based on the unique drum technique developed by Jaki Liebezeit (Can,
Jah Wobble, Bill Laswell, Brian Eno) in order to avoid usual stereotypes and
play rhythms according to their origins (perfectly demonstrated on “koan”
on the actual album).
Co-Founder and bass player Dal Martino’s other projects include
Nighthawks and Phoenix. Trance Groove is completed by: Helmut Zerlett –
keyb (The Unknown Cases, Dunkelziffer). Thomas Kessler - synth (Dissidenten),
DJ Heli - turntables (Klaus Doldinger, Jean Park), Jurgen Dahmen - p, g,
congas (Propaganda) and Bernd Winterschladen - sax (Talking Horns).
Being a big-name act in Germany since the release of their first album in
1994, Trance Groove soon gained worldwide recognition. The band became
more than a welcome guest at festivals – Summer Jam, Bizarre Festival,
the Spanish BAM in Barcelona among others. Their second album
“Paramount” even achieved a nomination for the US-Indie Award of the
local AFIM 1998 (in the field of alternative dance floor). Outside of Europe
the albums of the band have been released in the US accompanied by
massive airplay on collage radio.
“Orange” is the sixth album of the band and proves why a unique mixture
of stylish club sounds, downbeat dance material, straight drive and
atmospheric surroundings has become the synonym for Trance Groove.
Guests on “orange” are: Dominik v. Senger – g (The Unknown Cases,
Dunkelziffer, Phantom Band), Sheldon Ancel – voc (Holger Czukay, Phantom
Band), Reiner Linke – perc. (Dunkelziffer, Drums Off Chaos) and Marion
Rubina Klask – voc (known through Walk of the Elephants and the highly
successful album “Monchique”).
2008 marks the 20th anniversary of the death of Nico (voice of Velvet
Underground). As a bonus, her recording “Reich der Traume” is included on
the “Orange”-album as special Trance Groove-remix version from 2000:
Trance Groove vs. Nico.
The name “Trance Groove” is a tribute to the Ghanaian-Swedish
percussionist Anthony „Reebop“ Kwaku Baah (Traffic, Can, Ginger Baker’s
Air Force, Free ...// Solo-Album “Trance”, 1977 // died 1983). He played with
Krachten and Zerlett in the early Eighties after the split of Can in the band
Dunkelziffer (Can’s Damo Suzuki joined this band as well) and Reebop,
Krachten and Zerlett recorded as The Unknown Cases the clubhit
“Masimbabele“ re-released in July 2008 on a compilation record of the
Rolling Stone-magazine and as 25th anniversary jubilee edition on 12 inch
vinyl on the „sound leger“ label.
