indy, 1991 geboren, geht heute lächelnd durchs
­Leben. Sie spricht, lernte einen Beruf, arbeitet im
Airlinebusiness und hat sogar ein Buch geschrieben. Einmal pro Jahr reist sie nach Key Largo, wo Delfine
sie buchstäblich verzaubern. «Hier bin ich zu Hause. Und
hier bin ich glücklich. Die Delfine geben mir alles, was
ich brauche. Ich liebe sie. Und sie lieben mich», schwärmt
die junge Frau, deren Leben anfänglich alles andere als
berauschend war.
hese days Cindy, who was born in 1991, goes through
life wearing a smile. She learned to speak and acquired a set of skills to make herself employable. She
now works in the airline business and has even written a
book about her life to date. Once a year she travels to Key
Largo in Florida, where she is enchanted by dolphins. “Here
I am at home. And here I am happy. The dolphins give me
everything I need. I love them. And they love me,” says the
young woman whose early life was far from exhilarating.

und rund um die Uhr Pflege benötigen, prognostizierten
die Ärzte der werdenden Mutter. Dass es anders kam, ist
vor allem dem unerschütterlichen Willen und der nie ermüdenden Hoffnung von Roza Sikon zu verdanken.
Als Kind hat Cindy kaum gesprochen und konnte nicht
gehen. Wasser-, Craniosacral- und Hippotherapie im Inund Ausland, die Cindy besuchte, brachten kleine Verbesserungen. Aber immer wieder gab es Rückschläge.
Eine Kindheit, die viel Verzicht forderte und Cindy zur
Einzelgängerin stempelte, was sie oft traurig machte.
Cindy ist in Toronto und in der Nähe von Zürich aufgewachsen. In der Schule versuchte sie zu singen, bekam
Musikunterricht und begann in einem Chor mitzumachen: «Am besten ging es mir, wenn ich sang: ‹I’m beautiful, no matter what they say, words can’t bring me down.›
Musik bedeutet für mich, die Melodie zu hören, welche
mich zum Tanzen, Lachen und Weinen bringt.» Musik hat
sie auch emanzipiert. Mit dem Lied «Cruz» habe sie ihr
«altes Leben», das sie als Kind durchgestanden habe,
hinter sich gelassen und neuen Boden gefunden. Ihre Behinderung bezeichnet sie seither als Herausforderung.

the grim prognosis is primarily attributable to an unshakeable will and indefatigable hope on the part of Roza Sikon.
As a child, Cindy spoke little and could not walk. Hydrotherapy, craniosacral therapy and hippotherapy (equine
movement) administered at home and abroad brought
slight improvement. But steps forward were accompanied
by setbacks. Cindy’s childhood was largely one of doing
without many things, which turned her into a loner, a state
that often left her feeling sad.
Cindy grew up with her family in Toronto and later near
Zurich. At school she began singing, took music lessons and
joined a choir. “I felt best when I sang the Christina Aguilera song ‘Beautiful’: ‘I’m beautiful, no matter what they say,
words can’t bring me down …’ For me, music is all about
hearing the melody and being moved to dance, laugh or cry.”
Music also had a liberating effect. With the song “Cruz” she
turned her back on her “old life”, the life she endured as a
child, and found a new way of coping. Ever since that point,
she has described her disability as a challenge.

­Anleitung bezüglich Verhalten mit den Delfinen.

reiste mit ihrer Mutter nach Key Largo in
­Florida zur Delfintherapie. Spielend fand sie
dort ihre ureigene Sprache. Der Austausch
mit den anmutigen Tieren gab ihr ein neues
Gefühl von Akzeptanz, Zuversicht und Liebe.
Es ging ihr sehr schnell immer besser!
Cindy küsst Alfonz, einen der Delfine. Später lässt sie sich im Eiltempo durchs Wasser
ziehen, indem sie sich fest an den Flossen
hält; ihr Lachen begeistert Mutter und die
­anwesende Trainerin. Fünf Tage dauert
der Aufenthalt und beinhaltet täglich eine
Stunde «Arbeit» mit Instruktionen vor dem
Schwimmen.
«Ich will einfach frei sein», habe sie einmal
zu einem Delfin gesagt. Zum ersten Mal habe
sie sich damals verstanden gefühlt. Heute
möchte sie diese Begegnungen, die rundum
befreien, nicht mehr missen. Darum fliegt
sie immer wieder nach Florida. Sie wünscht
sich nichts sehnlicher als ein Haus am Meer:
ganz nah bei den Delfinen. Sie schwimmt
mit allen. Am liebsten aber mit Alfonz – mit
seinen 20 Jahren der älteste in der Bucht von
Key Largo.

gracious marine mammals gave her a new feeling of acceptance, confidence and love. Before
long, she was doing much better!
Cindy kisses Alfonz, one of the dolphins participating in the session, and later lets herself
be pulled through the water by holding on
firmly to the dolphins’ fins. Her laughter delights her mother and the therapist present.
The five-day stay includes one hour per day “of
work” with instruction before swimming.
“I just want to be free,“ she once said to a dolphin, feeling understood for the first time.
These thoroughly liberating encounters have
come to mean so much to her that she cannot
imagine doing without them. She repeatedly
returns to Florida to foster her relationship
with the dolphins and would like nothing more
than to have a house at the sea, very close to
them. She swims with them all but her favourite is 20-year-old Alfonz – the oldest of the group
in Key Largo Bay.
