Appendix A List of photograph files removed from the collection Appendix B List of books removed to the SFPL catalog Appendix C List of books removed to Friends of the Library BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Annemarie Madison was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, but moved back to Holland with her family after her mother contracted malaria. She met Lou Madison in 1950 and married him in 1956; their son, Michael was born in 1958. When the AIDS epidemic began, Madison asked the Public Health director of San Francisco how she could help. He referred her to Shanti and Coming Home Hospice, where she applied to be a volunteer and was accepted by Coming Home. Gradually more and more of her patients came as referrals through friends, rather than through hospice. Madison guided these men through the dying process, helping them to pass on with dignity and love. In 1985 Madison spoke at the Arts for Life benefit for the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, Shanti, and the AIDS program of Hospice of San Francisco, describing her work and encouraging attendees to support AIDS research and assistance organizations. In 1995, the President of the Federal Republic of Germany awarded Madison the Order of Merit, First Class, of the Federal Republic of Germany, for her work in the AIDS crisis. In 1996, at the 5th AIDS Conference in Munich Germany, the Kuratorium for Immune Deficiency created the Annemarie Madison Award to honor those who contribute to improving care for AIDS. Since 1985, Madison has traveled Europe speaking about dealing with the AIDS crisis and humane treatment of patients. She has been a major liaison between German-speaking countries and San Francisco, humanizing the crisis for Europe and bringing together experts on both sides of the Atlantic to look for solutions to the AIDS crisis. SCOPE AND CONTENT The Annemarie Madison Papers (1985-2007) contains correspondence, documentation of patient cases, newspaper and magazine clippings, photographs, videos, books, posters, ephemera, and an oral history relating to Annemarie Madison's work as an AIDS volunteer and educator in the earliest days of the epidemic. Madison arranged the files originally. Kaley Terwilliger added an oral history with Madison. ARRANGEMENT NOTE The collection is arranged into five series and then arranged alphabetically. Press Coverage was arranged alphabetically, then chronologically. Series I - Patients of Annemarie Madison: 1985-1996 (291 folders). Folders are first arranged by patient name, then by folders containing correspondence; death certificates, obituaries, and memorial flyers; and extensive notes taken by Madison on each case. Folders also contain press clippings, photos, and other information relevant to the experience of people dying of AIDS during the 1985-1996. Series II - Friends Who Died of AIDS: 1985-1996 (60 folders). Contains files on people whom Madison did not work with personally. The files may contain press clippings, photos, and short notes explaining her relationship to them. Series III -AIDS Volunteer Papers: 1985-2007 (9 folders). Contains files relating to Madison's work as an AIDS volunteer. This includes pamphlets and training materials, professional correspondence, awards, audio, and information about the Arts for Life benefit.
