Mission Statement
Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay
organization, leads women and men together to grow spiritually by offering
person-to-person service to the needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder,
Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, St. Vincent de Paul. As a reflection of the whole
family of God, members are drawn from every ethnic group, and economic level.
Members witness God’s love by embracing all works of charity and justice. The
Society collaborates with other people of good will in relieving need and addressing
its causes, making no distinction among those served, because, in them, members
see the face of Christ.

Dear Friends and Community Partners:
While reflecting on the Society’s past year, a consistent element kept coming to mind…people! The
Society is an organization of dedicated, active individuals forming conferences, committees, program
volunteers, boards and contributors. The people that serve and the people we serve are a
reflection of the family of God. Through our people–to–people services, we provide the works of
justice and charity. The Vincentian role of listening to the voices of the poor and walking with them
is indeed a distinct role.
Week after week and month after month, the role of ordinary people who provide leadership and
Vincentian services are what makes up the society. And what makes this unique is their
accountability. As a collective people called Vincentians, we account for everything we do. Whether
it is the number of hours we serve, the amount of food, clothing, rent, energy assistance, bus
tickets and dollars donated, we are accountable.
We are a spiritual community of people and leaders. First and foremost, Vincentian spirituality is
faith in action. This faith in action adapts to our ever-changing world and is a reflection of our visits
and all our programs.
The lay society of St. Vincent de Paul looks forward to the challenges we all face in 2009. Together
with the people we serve and as the poverty rate grows, the Society will meet this challenge as we
have before. Together with our parish and community contributors, we continue to grow and meet
our call to ministry of charity and justice.

Dear Friends:
2008 was a great year for the Society of St. Vincent
de Paul in Milwaukee, continuing its 159 years of
caring for the poor in Milwaukee.
The hungry were fed. The statistics on the many
meals served and the food distributed through
pantries and delivered to homes were staggering.
The sick were visited. For many people aged and
disabled, St. Vincent de Paul volunteers were the
only visitors they had.
Those unprotected from the cold were clothed. Items donated to the poor both
through our store and directly to one of our other programs were given without cost to those
in need.
Children sleeping on the floor were given beds. The Society provided 1,092 beds to
poor families during 2008, the majority of which were purchased due to lack of adequate
donations.
Families were offered opportunities to learn behaviors that strengthened their
ties to each other. Poverty has always been more than a lack of financial resources.
Nurturing, parenting, supporting, and life skills training are a key component of Vincentian
services.
As we enter into a new year, we are especially conscious of the call for change. Our new
national president has strongly reminded us to roll up our sleeves and work for a better economic and social system. He has challenged Americans to get more involved. For many, the
hopefulness of this message is more than rhetoric. But it reaffirms the basic values that built
and maintained our country.
The reemphasis of these values is a secular reaffirmation of the values which our Society
has always embraced. St. Vincent de Paul consists of a virtual army of unpaid volunteers, in
touch with the grass roots, who give deeply of themselves to help those desperately in need of
service. They believe that the answer to poverty is more than the distribution of goods, but
rather a greater distribution of caring - the element that empowers human beings to be the best
that they can be. Real caring will lead to greater understanding and sharing. It carries a message that no check or bag of groceries can carry by itself.
Our logo bears the phrase “at the heart of giving.” It is a phrase worth reflection, referring
to the caring that is an essential component of our charity. Our challenge is to put aside any
‘compassion fatigue,’ to welcome others into caring service, and to keep offering help together
with hope. The resulting world we aim to build will be a much more caring place.

Purpose:
To provide assistance for any person in need.
As culture and economics have changed, the St. Vincent de Paul Society of
Milwaukee has found itself evolving into a leading provider of social services. Based
on establishing one-on-one relationships, these services include emotional and
financial emergency aid, free meals, visitation, companionship, parenting programs
and support groups, as well as advocacy in the social justice arena. The goal of all
programs is self-development and independence through the recognition of our
common need for basic human dignity and integrity. Services are provided
regardless of religious denomination and ethnicity.
History:
In Paris during 1833, the St. Vincent de Paul Society began as a small group of
similarly-minded students led by Frederic Ozanam, then 20 years old. Their model
of visiting the poor of the Paris slums was adopted widely, reaching Milwaukee in
1849. Several Milwaukee Catholic parishes established groups of volunteers, called
conferences. By 1914, enough conferences existed to form a council which allowed
for legal incorporation and the ability to expand service to a broader client base.
The basic one-on-one visit historically evolved to also include programs, free
meals, shelters, and outreach centers. Through the generous support of not only
the Catholics, but other faiths and the broader urban community, our programs
now employ many professional staff members who train and consult with the
largely volunteer core staff.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors - Vincentian Services
Scattered throughout the metropolitan Milwaukee area are fifty-eight volunteer neighborhood
groups, called conferences. These are generally based in Catholic parishes, with the core field
work being home visits. During these visits, volunteers respond individually to each situation,
assessing challenges and unmet needs. They then provide financial aid, gift certificates for the
Thrift Store or community referrals. What is surprising, however, is how often the emotional
support that these volunteers provide becomes a bridge towards change, and is remembered
long after the financial support’s purpose has been filled.
Milwaukee’s St. Vincent de Paul council office is designed to serve our volunteers in the field
with a central-intake department comprised of two part-time staff to coordinate referrals. More
than half of our referrals are for assistance to children.
Conferences also operate food pantries, participate in ongoing prison visitations and nursing
home programs, provide back to school supplies to 4,000 children, and fund 25 high school
scholarships. Board and Committee seats such as Fund Development and Programs draw from
conference membership.

The Vincent Family Resource Center operates a series of family support and
child abuse prevention programs that build strong families who then create a
stronger community. Established in 1995, the Vincent Family Resource Center
serves an area with one of the highest poverty rates in Milwaukee (U.S. Census
Bureau). On average, 300 families participate in Vincent Family Resource Center
programs, with that number growing every year.
Adult empowerment programs are aimed at teaching life skills, better
health and nutrition practices, effective communication, and parenting skills. Also
offered are home visitation for new parents, one-on-one family coaching, family
playtimes, and community events. Licensed teachers provide free childcare while
parents attend classes or participate in programs.
Youth leadership and support groups teach youth not to choose high-risk
behaviors. Engaging in constructive activities that are geared towards developing
leadership skills, these programs are structured for both boys and girls.There is
also a free toy and book lending library for children as well as their parents.

The Vincent Meal Sites serve free, hot, nutritious meals to families and individuals six
nights of the week in a family friendly atmosphere. On average 150,000 meals are served
annually. Volunteers are corporate, faith-based, or individuals from the community who
purchase and prepare most of the food, then serve the guests in an atmosphere of dignity and
hope. Information, referral, and support are also available.
Fifty percent of the regular meal guests are children. Hundreds of additional youth
benefit from the program through volunteerism by way of beverage and food service and first
hand observation of the wide ranging effects of hunger and poverty. This reminds everyone to
be thankful for their own stability and grace while underscoring the importance of giving back.
St. Vincent De Paul Thrift Store

The mission of the Thrift Store goes far beyond retail sales. While providing a place for
low cost furniture, household items and clothing to the local community, it also contributes
revenue to all other ongoing St. Vincent de Paul social service programs. One of these
programs, Neighbors Helping Neighbors, distributes free gift certificates to the Thrift Store as
part of the home visit assesment. The single greatest need is always for beds. The Thrift Store
also hosts a Santa’s workshop where parents are able to pick new and slightly used toys free of
charge for their children’s Christmas.
Voice of the Poor - Social Justice
Voice of the Poor is a National St. Vincent de Paul
Committee formed to address issues contributing to
poverty, suffering or exclusion. A very narrow focus is
established from the larger number of topics that were
researched, documented and validated by regional St.
Vincent de Paul societies. This allows Vincentians to act
knowledgeably and credibly in their given roles within
the community.

Making Connections in Times of Need
The simple act of one person touching the life of another to assist in
times of need, is the basis from which all other St. Vincent de Paul
programs have grown. Weekly there are stories; touching, moving,
heartwrenching stories, whose common thread is the turn-around that
began when one person cared about more than the material needs of
another and reached out. Sometimes there are prayers. Sometimes
there are tears. But the manifestation that validates this person-toperson mission is the number of recipients who return to become
donors of both time and money.
Conferences whose need far exceeds their resources are designated as
“Needy Conferences”. Special fundraisers such as the High Tea and the
Walk for the Poor funnel money to these communities.
We are born to experience love. Vincentians do this every day by
thought and action, often with those that society prefers to not see.
Every program has become an extension of this simple knowledge:
caring will begin the healing process.

More than just Food for both Body and Soul
The list of comforts that most of us take for
granted is absent in the life of someone who’s
homeless or struggling with poverty. Food,
cleanliness, companionship – these are luxuries
rather than necessities. The Vincent Family Meal
Programs forge human bonds that give structure
and hope to lives that often have neither. Most of
the food served has been donated and this
program is funded by private donations, not
government grants.
A shower was installed for use by homeless meal
guests and has proved to be an invaluable
extension of services. During extreme cold, the
Meal Program stays open offering sleeping bags,
safety, and warmth.

St. Vincemt de Paul Thrift Store
Reduced Prices not Quality of Life
Most people are surprised when they first visit the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store. Racks and racks
of fashionable clothes, all priced at $1.99 lead to household items and furniture. What would also
surprise them is the amount of merchandise channelled through the Vincentian Services
Gift Certificate distribution program which almost equals store sales. Beds are the most commonly
requested items and consequently, donations are always needed. Sleeping in a bed rather than on
the floor - something most take for granted.

More than just Food for both Body and Soul
The list of comforts that most of us take for
granted is absent in the life of someone who’s
homeless or struggling with poverty. Food,
cleanliness, companionship – these are luxuries
rather than necessities. The Vincent Family Meal
Programs forge human bonds that give structure
and hope to lives that often have neither. Most of
the food served has been donated and this
program is funded by private donations, not
government grants.
A shower was installed for use by homeless meal
guests and has proved to be an invaluable
extension of services. During extreme cold, the
Meal Program stays open offering sleeping bags,
safety, and warmth.

The Glitz and Glamour Sale draws an anxious crowd
St. Vincemt de Paul Thrift Store
Reduced Prices not Quality of Life
Most people are surprised when they first visit the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store. Racks and racks
of fashionable clothes, all priced at $1.99 lead to household items and furniture. What would also
surprise them is the amount of merchandise channelled through the Vincentian Services
Gift Certificate distribution program which almost equals store sales. Beds are the most commonly
requested items and consequently, donations are always needed. Sleeping in a bed rather than on
the floor - something most take for granted.

Making Connections in Times of Need
The simple act of one person touching the life of another to assist in
times of need, is the basis from which all other St. Vincent de Paul
programs have grown. Weekly there are stories; touching, moving,
heartwrenching stories, whose common thread is the turn-around that
began when one person cared about more than the material needs of
another and reached out. Sometimes there are prayers. Sometimes
there are tears. But the manifestation that validates this person-toperson mission is the number of recipients who return to become
donors of both time and money.
Conferences whose need far exceeds their resources are designated as
“Needy Conferences”. Special fundraisers such as the High Tea and the
Walk for the Poor funnel money to these communities.
We are born to experience love. Vincentians do this every day by
thought and action, often with those that society prefers to not see.
Every program has become an extension of this simple knowledge:
caring will begin the healing process.

The Vincent Meal Sites serve free, hot, nutritious meals to families and individuals six
nights of the week in a family friendly atmosphere. On average 150,000 meals are served
annually. Volunteers are corporate, faith-based, or individuals from the community who
purchase and prepare most of the food, then serve the guests in an atmosphere of dignity and
hope. Information, referral, and support are also available.
Fifty percent of the regular meal guests are children. Hundreds of additional youth
benefit from the program through volunteerism by way of beverage and food service and first
hand observation of the wide ranging effects of hunger and poverty. This reminds everyone to
be thankful for their own stability and grace while underscoring the importance of giving back.
St. Vincent De Paul Thrift Store

The mission of the Thrift Store goes far beyond retail sales. While providing a place for
low cost furniture, household items and clothing to the local community, it also contributes
revenue to all other ongoing St. Vincent de Paul social service programs. One of these
programs, Neighbors Helping Neighbors, distributes free gift certificates to the Thrift Store as
part of the home visit assesment. The single greatest need is always for beds. The Thrift Store
also hosts a Santa’s workshop where parents are able to pick new and slightly used toys free of
charge for their children’s Christmas.
Voice of the Poor - Social Justice
Voice of the Poor is a National St. Vincent de Paul
Committee formed to address issues contributing to
poverty, suffering or exclusion. A very narrow focus is
established from the larger number of topics that were
researched, documented and validated by regional St.
Vincent de Paul societies. This allows Vincentians to act
knowledgeably and credibly in their given roles within
the community.
Organizational
Neighbors Helping Neighbors - Vincentian Services
Scattered throughout the metropolitan Milwaukee area are fifty-eight volunteer neighborhood
groups, called conferences. These are generally based in Catholic parishes, with the core field
work being home visits. During these visits, volunteers respond individually to each situation,
assessing challenges and unmet needs. They then provide financial aid, gift certificates for the
Thrift Store or community referrals. What is surprising, however, is how often the emotional
support that these volunteers provide becomes a bridge towards change, and is remembered
long after the financial support’s purpose has been filled.
Milwaukee’s St. Vincent de Paul council office is designed to serve our volunteers in the field
with a central-intake department comprised of two part-time staff to coordinate referrals. More
than half of our referrals are for assistance to children.
Conferences also operate food pantries, participate in ongoing prison visitations and nursing
home programs, provide back to school supplies to 4,000 children, and fund 25 high school
scholarships. Board and Committee seats such as Fund Development and Programs draw from
conference membership.
The Vincent Family Resource Center

The Vincent Family Resource Center operates a series of family support and
child abuse prevention programs that build strong families who then create a
stronger community. Established in 1995, the Vincent Family Resource Center
serves an area with one of the highest poverty rates in Milwaukee (U.S. Census
Bureau). On average, 300 families participate in Vincent Family Resource Center
programs, with that number growing every year.
Adult empowerment programs are aimed at teaching life skills, better
health and nutrition practices, effective communication, and parenting skills. Also
offered are home visitation for new parents, one-on-one family coaching, family
playtimes, and community events. Licensed teachers provide free childcare while
parents attend classes or participate in programs.
Youth leadership and support groups teach youth not to choose high-risk
behaviors. Engaging in constructive activities that are geared towards developing
leadership skills, these programs are structured for both boys and girls.There is
also a free toy and book lending library for children as well as their parents.

Dear Friends:
2008 was a great year for the Society of St. Vincent
de Paul in Milwaukee, continuing its 159 years of
caring for the poor in Milwaukee.
The hungry were fed. The statistics on the many
meals served and the food distributed through
pantries and delivered to homes were staggering.
The sick were visited. For many people aged and
disabled, St. Vincent de Paul volunteers were the
only visitors they had.
Those unprotected from the cold were clothed. Items donated to the poor both
through our store and directly to one of our other programs were given without cost to those
in need.
Children sleeping on the floor were given beds. The Society provided 1,092 beds to
poor families during 2008, the majority of which were purchased due to lack of adequate
donations.
Families were offered opportunities to learn behaviors that strengthened their
ties to each other. Poverty has always been more than a lack of financial resources.
Nurturing, parenting, supporting, and life skills training are a key component of Vincentian
services.
As we enter into a new year, we are especially conscious of the call for change. Our new
national president has strongly reminded us to roll up our sleeves and work for a better economic and social system. He has challenged Americans to get more involved. For many, the
hopefulness of this message is more than rhetoric. But it reaffirms the basic values that built
and maintained our country.
The reemphasis of these values is a secular reaffirmation of the values which our Society
has always embraced. St. Vincent de Paul consists of a virtual army of unpaid volunteers, in
touch with the grass roots, who give deeply of themselves to help those desperately in need of
service. They believe that the answer to poverty is more than the distribution of goods, but
rather a greater distribution of caring - the element that empowers human beings to be the best
that they can be. Real caring will lead to greater understanding and sharing. It carries a message that no check or bag of groceries can carry by itself.
Our logo bears the phrase “at the heart of giving.” It is a phrase worth reflection, referring
to the caring that is an essential component of our charity. Our challenge is to put aside any
‘compassion fatigue,’ to welcome others into caring service, and to keep offering help together
with hope. The resulting world we aim to build will be a much more caring place.
Leadership
Dear Friends and Community Partners:
While reflecting on the Society’s past year, a consistent element kept coming to mind…people! The
Society is an organization of dedicated, active individuals forming conferences, committees, program
volunteers, boards and contributors. The people that serve and the people we serve are a
reflection of the family of God. Through our people–to–people services, we provide the works of
justice and charity. The Vincentian role of listening to the voices of the poor and walking with them
is indeed a distinct role.
Week after week and month after month, the role of ordinary people who provide leadership and
Vincentian services are what makes up the society. And what makes this unique is their
accountability. As a collective people called Vincentians, we account for everything we do. Whether
it is the number of hours we serve, the amount of food, clothing, rent, energy assistance, bus
tickets and dollars donated, we are accountable.
We are a spiritual community of people and leaders. First and foremost, Vincentian spirituality is
faith in action. This faith in action adapts to our ever-changing world and is a reflection of our visits
and all our programs.
The lay society of St. Vincent de Paul looks forward to the challenges we all face in 2009. Together
with the people we serve and as the poverty rate grows, the Society will meet this challenge as we
have before. Together with our parish and community contributors, we continue to grow and meet
our call to ministry of charity and justice.

Milwaukee has found itself evolving into a leading provider of social services. Based
on establishing one-on-one relationships, these services include emotional and
financial emergency aid, free meals, visitation, companionship, parenting programs
and support groups, as well as advocacy in the social justice arena. The goal of all
programs is self-development and independence through the recognition of our
common need for basic human dignity and integrity. Services are provided
regardless of religious denomination and ethnicity.
History:
In Paris during 1833, the St. Vincent de Paul Society began as a small group of
similarly-minded students led by Frederic Ozanam, then 20 years old. Their model
of visiting the poor of the Paris slums was adopted widely, reaching Milwaukee in
1849. Several Milwaukee Catholic parishes established groups of volunteers, called
conferences. By 1914, enough conferences existed to form a council which allowed
for legal incorporation and the ability to expand service to a broader client base.
The basic one-on-one visit historically evolved to also include programs, free
meals, shelters, and outreach centers. Through the generous support of not only
the Catholics, but other faiths and the broader urban community, our programs
now employ many professional staff members who train and consult with the
largely volunteer core staff.

Mission Statement
Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, a Catholic lay
organization, leads women and men together to grow spiritually by offering
person-to-person service to the needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder,
Frederic Ozanam, and its patron, St. Vincent de Paul. As a reflection of the whole
family of God, members are drawn from every ethnic group, and economic level.
Members witness God’s love by embracing all works of charity and justice. The
Society collaborates with other people of good will in relieving need and addressing
its causes, making no distinction among those served, because, in them, members
see the face of Christ.
