The Freiburg cathedral
The city’s undeniable highlight and most famous
piece of architecture is its cathedral, whose unique
tower ranks as one of Europe’s Gothic masterpieces and has long been the symbol of Freiburg. The
surrounding Münsterplatz is one of Germany’s
most beautiful squares and forms the centre and
very heart of the city.

Freiburg’s Bächle
These little rivulets wind their way through the city
centre and were once used to help fight fires and
drain away used water and as water troughs for
cattle. Today, they are a tourist attraction and it is
said that anybody who accidently steps in one must
marry a Freiburger.

Martinstor
The Martinstor is Freiburg’s oldest remaining city
gate and used to serve as a prison, where women
denounced as witches were tortured before being
burnt on the River Dreisam.

PROGRAMM • FRIDAY, MARCH 4TH, 2016
PROGRAMM • SATURDAY, MARCH 5TH, 2016
09:00–09:10
Dear Colleagues,
35 years ago, Kurt Semm performed the first laparoscopic appendectomy
and was heavily criticized by his colleagues at the time. Despite initial global
objection by peers, the development of laparoscopic techniques has made
more and more abdominal interventions possible, and nowadays a plethora
of surgical procedures are performed laparoscopically on a routine basis.
Similar to laparoscopy itself, minimally invasive oncologic surgery faced substantial disapproval in the beginning, and it has taken many trials to prove the
oncological non-inferiority compared with well-established open procedures.
While in lower GI surgery laparoscopic procedures are performed routinely,
laparoscopic oncologic upper GI or HPB operati ons are only performed in few
specialized centers.
The more complicated anatomy, the delicate techniques needed for reconstruction, as well as the lower caseload make these operations technically
challenging.
At our symposium we bring together European experts on oncologic laparoscopic upper GI and HPB surgery, who will share with you their expertise
and technique they developed.
The presentations of these experts are based on video sequences explaining
you how these experts perform these challenging operations.
We hope you find this topic interesting and we would love to welcome you
in Freiburg for this excellent event.
With kind regards
Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. U. T. Hopt
