HAUSERGALLERY is delighted to announce the first exhibition by Isabelle Wenzel in Switzerland.
Isabelle Wenzel asks herself: „Who am I? What is the object and what relationship do we have to each
other?“
She confronts the visitor with partly surreal and partly dynamic studies of the human body. They show cropped sections of a performance created especially for the camera. Her main emphasis is on the photographs‘
performative and sculptural aspects. The result is images that depict an explicitly created and staged world
in which Wenzel takes the stage as photographer, model, sculpture and, in the final instance, as viewer, too.
All three levels meld here into one new medium.
As a voyeur, one immerses oneself in a world replete in emotions and questions. Wenzel coquettishly
presents the sexualized sexuality of her objects to the public eye and thus tempts us into an extravagant
tête-à-tête. In the process, the contorted bodies give rise to a sculptural world in which there is no reference
at all to the issue of person or personality. Some images reveal a cynical touch of the sit-com, such that you
can readily encounter yourself in them. Spontaneity, movement and color are in this way interwoven, round
each other out or engender new elements of tension. Wenzel‘s worlds offer us new perspectives and angles
thanks to which you soon forget the natural and physical world order. Within the space of 10 seconds she
grants us a fleeting glance at memories of something that went before, thus giving the image the scope to
represent its or your own imagined reality. By doing so she succeeds in offering the viewer the greatest
possible freedom of association.

Isabelle Wenzel (*1982, Wuppertal) lives and works in Amsterdam. She studied photography from
2008 - 2010 at the Gerrit Rietveld Akademy in Amsterdam. Since then she received several grants like
the European Photo Exhibition Award from the Körber-Stiftung Hamburg in 2011 and from the Mondriaan
Fonds in 2013 amongst others. Her work has been exhibited in national and international solo and group
shows and will be now shown for the first time in Switzerland.

Die HAUSERGALLERY freut sich, die erste Ausstellung von Isabelle Wenzel in der Schweiz zu präsentieren.
„An einem Bild sind immer zwei Leute beteiligt: der Fotograf und der Betrachter. Ein Foto wird meistens nur angeschaut - selten schaut man in es hinein.“ – Ansel Adams
Isabelle Wenzel fügt dieser Konstellation noch eine dritte Ebene hinzu. Sie fragt sich selbst: „Wer bin ich, was ist das
Objekt und welches Verhältnis gehen wir zueinander ein?“
Sie konfrontiert den Betrachter mit teils surrealen teils dynamischen Körperstudien. Diese zeigen Ausschnitte einer
Performance, die eigens für die Kamera erschaffen wurden. Ihr Hauptanliegen beruht auf den performativen und
skulpturalen Aspekten ihrer Fotografien. So entstehen Bilder, die eine explizit kreierte und inszenierte Welt aufzeigen,
in welchen Wenzel als Fotografin, Modell bzw. Skulptur und schlussendlich auch als Betrachterin fungiert. Alle drei
Ebenen verschmelzen bei ihr zu einem neuen Medium.
Als Schaulustiger taucht man in eine Welt voller Emotionen und Fragen ein. Sie kokettiert durch die sexualisierte Weiblichkeit ihrer Objekte mit den Zuschauern und verführt so zu einem extravaganten Tête-à-Tête. Dabei erschaffen die
verrenkten Körper eine skulpturale Welt, in welcher die Frage nach der Persönlichkeit völlig vernachlässigt wird. Einige
Bilder haben eine zynische Situationskomik, in denen man sich selber wieder finden kann. Spontanität, Bewegung und
Farbe werden miteinander verwoben, ergänzen sich oder ergeben neue Spannungsmomente. Ihre Welten enthalten
neue Perspektiven und Ansichten, die einem die natürliche und physikalische Weltordnung vergessen lässt.
Innerhalb von 10 Sekunden erschafft sie einen flüchtigen Augenblick der Erinnerung an etwas Vorausgegangenes und
lässt dem Bild somit die Freiheit eine eigene imaginierte Wirklichkeit darzustellen. So erzeugt sie für den Betrachter
einen grösstmöglichen Assoziationsfreiraum.

Isabelle Wenzel (*1982, Wuppertal) lebt und arbeitet in Amsterdam. Von 2008 - 2010 studierte sie an der Gerrit
Rietveld Akademie in Amsterdam Fotografie. Seither hat sie einige Auszeichnungen wie etwa den European Photo
Exhibition Award der Körber-Stiftung aus Hamburg gewonnen. Sie erhielt auch bereits diverse Stipendien unter anderem 2013 von der Mondriaan Fonds Stiftung. Ihre Fotografien wurden bereits in zahlreichen Einzel- und Gruppenausstellungen in Holland, Deutschland, Taiwan, Norwegen, Italien, Frankreich und Slownien gezeigt.
