Queen Ethelburga’s College
The Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s
• The top day and boarding school in the North.
• The fourth day and boarding school in the UK.
• The second day and boarding school in the North.
• The twelfth day and boarding school in the UK.
Steven Jandrell, Principal: “ Our results have been improving for many years and are
testament to the hard work of students and staff. All are to be congratulated. To be
ranked so highly in the UK means the education we offer is truly ‘World Class’.
Our investment of £65m in the last eight years, combined with the individual
appreciation of every student, is part of our unique approach which is giving our
students unparalleled benefits. Our children are happy, confident and highly successful
and our staff are friendly, professional and dedicated.”
Queen Ethelburga’s offers independent education for boys and girls from 3 months to
19 years, as day students or as weekly or full boarders.
We have day pupils and boarders, from all over the region and the UK. This is complemented by students from over 50 different countries
worldwide. This enables QE to offer a superb cosmopolitan approach to education, ensuring all our students are fully prepared for the
international opportunities that now await them. Virtually all of our Year 13 students go on to university, with the majority to the prestigious
Russell Group and 1994 Group universities, as well as others worldwide.

The Collegiate
One campus ~ Four schools
Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate is made up of four schools. These are:
Chapter House School:
for students in Kindergarten to Year Group 5
King’s Magna School :
for students in Year Groups 6 to 9
Queen Ethelburga’s College:
Levels.
The Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s :
following a traditional independent school curriculum in Year Groups 10 to 13 of GCSEs and A-
offering a wide range of academic, creative and vocational options to students in Year Groups 10 to 13,
but with a more flexible approach to the curriculum that caters for individual abilities and
aspirations.
A comment from a parent who recently visited QE...
“ No doubt, like a great number of other parents, I had pre-conceived ideas before I visited QE. Well I was in for a very pleasant surprise. Everyone
said your facilities were excellent, but I doubt anyone really appreciates how superb they are, until they see them for themselves. QE is incredibly
well-resourced. I have been to several Open Days at other independent schools and no one even comes close to what you have at QE. I now
appreciate your £65m investment in new facilities !
I was really taken with the cosmopolitan atmosphere. I found a good balance between English (the majority) and other nationalities. What came
across, more than anything else, was just how friendly and welcoming everyone was. Our pupil tour guides were charming and the staff so helpful.

“ The School is successful in fulfilling its maxim for the pupils, ‘to be the best I can

with the gifts I have so that, in the Sixth Form, the pupils’ achievement is excellent.

“ The best education is about developing individual
“
potential and that is central to our ethos.
8
The Collegiate Principal
Steven Jandrell
Queen Ethelburga’s offers our students a vast range of opportunities, enabling them to
pursue their individual interests and aspirations. This way, they can truly live by the
‘Hill Standard’ or school motto: “To be the best that I can with the gifts that I have.”
But where I believe we are unique is in having four schools that are small enough to
maintain a family atmosphere, where the Heads and their teams know their pupils
thoroughly and can successfully guide them through their formative years.
Good education is about building special relationships between teachers and pupils,
and amongst pupils themselves, which enable boys and girls to develop into mature
young adults; people who are confident without being arrogant, friendly but not
familiar, relaxed but not casual, but who have the courage to live by sound moral, social
and spiritual values.
It has been very rewarding to help build a cosmopolitan community based on high
standards and mutual support, on a campus that offers our students the best possible
environment in which to live and learn. We are very proud of what has been achieved at
QE over recent years and would welcome you to come and experience it for yourself.

“ Our children are happy and confident within the secure
“
Kindergarten environment that we
10
provide
Queen’s Kindergarten
Babies and toddlers from 3 months to 3 years
Our children in Kindergarten are offered a play-based curriculum which meets the
requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage. We present a wide range of activities
which promote the child’s physical, emotional and social skills as well as language
development. These prime areas are fundamental and move through to support
development in the specific areas: Literacy, Understanding the World, Mathematics and
Expressive Art and Design. All these skills are developed through adult and child-led play
which stimulates initiative and imagination. We aim for your child’s experience to be
happy, active and fun offered in a safe and secure environment which supports their
development, care and learning needs.
Each child is allocated a 'Key Person' within their room, who is responsible for the child's
wellbeing. The Key Person will liaise with you and keep you informed of your child’s
experiences on a daily basis.
We plan to children’s individual needs as well as having monthly topics. Regular
observations are completed for every child in their unique Learning Journal to ensure that
progress is monitored and planning altered to cater for each individual child. These
observations cover mainly the prime areas of the framework, as well as some on the specific
areas and are records of special moments.
The EYFS progress check is carried out between the age of two and three. This involves a
short summary of the child’s development within the prime areas. This is an opportunity to
celebrate each child’s achievements and help identify any support to enable them to reach
their full potential.

Chapter House Pre-Preparatory
From 3 years to 7 years
Our pre-preparatory department gives younger children their all-important introduction to
the learning environment from the age of 3 years. We provide a very effective introduction to
these concepts within Foundation Stage without subjecting the children to any feeling of
pressure; learning is presented in an enjoyable and assimilated way with a wide range of
activities which follow the three prime and four specific areas of the Early Years curriculum.
As the children develop, we foster their skills in reading, language and number work to
provide a secure basis for literacy and numeracy. By the time they join the preparatory
department at the age of seven, we would expect them to be competent readers, to have good
verbal and writing skills and the ability to work with fractions, graphs and money. We
introduce our pre-preparatory children to science by exploring a variety of living things and
materials in the environment, stimulating curiosity and an enquiring approach. All pupils
from the age of 3 have access to up-to-date computers and use the early-learning software
with confidence and enjoyment.
French is introduced by the age of 5. Dance, music, art, swimming and physical education
extend the range of the pre-preparatory children’s early learning. Our teachers plan the
structure of our pre-prep activities carefully, in order to develop the children’s self-confidence
and nurture an enjoyment of school work. The addition of social experience and plenty of
play provide a fully rounded educational foundation during the vital early years. Regular
contact with parents is maintained, informally on a day to day basis and formally with twice
yearly parents’ meeting and three end of term reports.

Chapter House Junior School
From 7 years to 10 years ~ Boarding from 6 years
Early school life is a time of discovery. Children have a thirst for knowledge and understanding
which Chapter House caters for in an exciting and structured way. Our academic programme
consists, in essence, of two strands. We equip children with the means to learn, explore and
develop ideas; we also provide a thorough grounding in the necessary technical skills. Children
benefit from class teaching in the early prep. school years. This enables them to forge strong
classroom relationships and develop a sense of security whilst the form teacher gains an accurate
insight into each child’s abilities and interests; any problems can be successfully identified and
tackled at an early stage. Class sizes are small.
Our Junior School is small, friendly and very successful academically. We have spent over £1m
upgrading all our Junior School facilities and we have our own dedicated IT suite, science
laboratory, technology room and library. All classrooms are of a good size and are well equipped
with resources to ensure that children are given the best opportunities.
We give every child a thorough grounding in all the subjects covered by the National Curriculum
and well beyond. At the same time we stimulate individual interests and creative ability.
Children achieve an extremely high standard in their French studies. Every child is encouraged
to develop his or her own potential to the full and to achieve the highest academic standard of
which he or she is capable. The creative displays of pupils’ work on show in all the classrooms
lead the children to experience a sense of pride in their achievements. Chapter House School is
particularly well equipped and the children become used to working with computers at an early
stage in their school careers, both as a subject in its own right and as an aid to learning other
skills. Classwork is supplemented by relevant study trips and fieldwork, which could be a simple
nature walk on the school campus or a visit to a specialist activity away from school.
15
“ Chapter House children are taught to be confident
“
in themselves and their ability...and it shows!

Chapter House Junior School
From 7 years to 10 years ~ Boarding from 6 years
There is ample opportunity for children to develop their craft skills and to study drama
and music, two of the many ways in which we encourage them to grow in confidence
and self-expression as their knowledge and academic horizons expand. Musical
concerts and dramatic productions are performed regularly for parents and many pupils
join the Choir or learn a new instrument.
At the end of Year 5 children leaving Chapter House Junior School move up to King’s
Magna Middle School, to continue their school education. Chapter House staff are
fully qualified in primary education and are dedicated to providing a happy, purposeful
atmosphere in which all our pupils can thrive. We firmly believe that, given the right
environment and encouragement, every child has the ability to succeed.
As pupils progress through the school, they are introduced to specialist subject
teaching. Our staff enjoy their individual subjects and ensure that lessons are
stimulating and fun, whilst working towards targets well beyond the normal junior
curriculum. Full and detailed reports are issued each term and parents also have regular
opportunities to talk to each of their child’s teachers individually, to discuss progress.
The opportunities that Chapter House can provide your child can give them a big lead
over children elsewhere.

King’s Magna Middle School
Boys and Girls Year Groups 6 to 9 ~ Day, weekly or full boarding
Our class sizes are smaller than many other schools which enable us to devote the
extra time and energy to ensure that children, across a wide level of ability, achieve
outstanding results. Because we share our campus with the senior schools, the
number of sports and activities we do is huge. We offer a wide range of after school
activities and weekend trips which are open to day and boarding pupils. We pride
ourselves on being a very happy school. Every child matters and this shows in what
our pupils achieve.
Our staff are committed and are really concerned about what happens to our pupils.
When necessary, sensible and fair discipline puts a wayward young person back on
course. In essence our community is a family. We encourage pupils to become more
independent and take on more responsibility as they go through school. King’s
Magna, as a middle school, is an ideal place for this to happen, as it is safe and secure.
This provides an ideal setting where any pupil can succeed.
21
22
King’s Magna Middle School
Boys and Girls Year Groups 6 to Year 9 ~ Day, weekly or full boarding
Year 6 pupils are mainly class taught but have specialist teaching in French, art, DT, drama, and PE. Classes are set for English and maths as past
experience has shown that pupils benefit from this arrangement. Key Stage 2 tests are taken by year 6 pupils. The test results of Year 6 are, as you
would expect, regularly well above the national average. We are very proud of all of our students. Our objective in the early years at school is to
identify each pupil’s strengths and weaknesses and ensure that each pupil receives a broad and balanced curriculum in order to develop the whole
child.
From Year 7, pupils enjoy a broad-based programme of lessons, taught by specialist teachers, including English, maths, three sciences, music,
drama, art, design technology, HE, 3 languages, embedded Information Technology, geography, history, personal development and numerous
sports. Setting classes in most subjects from year 7 to 9, according to ability, enhances the effectiveness of lessons, and, in our experience, is
welcomed by the pupils.
King’s Magna welcomes pupils from Year 6 to Year 9 who share our philosophy “To be the best that I can with the gifts that I have”.
23
24
King’s Magna Middle School
Boys and Girls Year Groups 6 to 9 ~ Day, weekly or full boarding
Classwork goes well beyond the requirements of the national curriculum, to provide a
breadth of stimulation and enjoyment which helps every pupil to discover the joy and value
of learning, and reap the benefits in later years. Every year group in King’s Magna has an
Enterprise day, which is business based. Pupils develop skills in team work, public speaking,
retailing and advertising. Visitors are also invited into school to enhance the curriculum as
pupils experience living in medieval times or being a writer for a day.
We are very keen that parents do not feel excluded from the very effective working
relationships which develop between teachers and pupils in schools of high academic
quality such as King’s Magna. Parents are a vital force if every pupil is to reach their full
potential and we involve them fully.
Each pupil’s progress is monitored on a regular basis by their teachers, with a series of
assessments being awarded periodically. Each half term a detailed assessment report on
progress, regarding development in every subject, is given to pupils and parents, to keep
everyone well informed. There are also three opportunities during the year to meet with
subject teachers and discuss any progress and aspirations. At the end of the year a full
report with comments from academic teachers, form tutors and the Head of School is
issued.

Queen Ethelburga’s ~ College
Boys and Girls Year Groups 10 to 13 ~ Day, weekly or full boarding
If you asked our parents to sum up why they chose the College in one word, that
word would be 'aspiration.'
Our students are focused, positive and overwhelmingly determined to achieve at
the highest possible level. Results in the College are excellent and in the last eight
years each year group that has come through has consistently outperformed the
last. The individual attention and support provided by our teachers is second to
none, and the many testimonials throughout this prospectus from our students
should give you a strong sense of how highly the students value the guidance they
are given.
Academic success only tells part of the story though, our students are fine
ambassadors for the school, contributing strongly to school life by taking part in
our huge range of activities, sports, music, drama and community service
opportunities. Ultimately, this leads to outstanding success in their university
applications and we are extraordinarily proud of our students and their
achievements each year.

Queen Ethelburga’s ~ Faculty
Boys and Girls Year Groups 10 to 13 ~ Day, weekly or full boarding
The Faculty of Queen Ethelburga’s caters for students with a wide range of talents and
abilities. Our individual programmes of study help them to enjoy success in their
academic work, their vocational studies, and in their artistic, musical or sporting
endeavours.
The Faculty provides every student with the opportunity to study the courses that are
of the most interest to them and that will give them the greatest chances of success.
In addition to the more traditional GCSE and A Level options, students are able to
choose from a range of vocational BTEC courses in both key stages, providing a
broad, exciting and challenging curriculum. Where required, students have access to
personal learning mentors to provide support and guidance throughout their time
with us.
It is the combination of a wide-ranging curriculum and individual support that enables
Faculty students to far exceed normal expectations.

Sports Village
Encouraging sport for all
All pupils follow a sports programme designed to stimulate the values of fair play,
honesty, determination and competition through a wide variety of pursuits in
which participation is key. Sport is a vital part of independent school life for
children, with many students continuing with sport, either for recreation or as a
route of study, through to university.
The facilities on campus are outstanding, with the recent development of our
£16million “Sports Village” to which all students have additional access outside
formal school hours.
Specialist high level coaching is undertaken by those students wishing to pursue
an avenue in their chosen sport, with many students representing Queen
Ethelburga’s at county, regional and national level.
There is a wide range of sports available including: rugby, hockey, football,
netball, cricket, athletics, basketball, rounders, tennis, fencing, dance, chess,
archery, cross country, badminton and volleyball. The list is constantly
expanding!
Whether a serious athlete or someone wishing to simply enjoy the health benefit
that sport brings - we can assure you that we can cater for all abilities and we will

Music
Music is a vibrant, enjoyable and fulfilling subject for all at Queen Ethelburga’s
Collegiate Foundation. From the earliest years, students in the music classroom are
engaged in playing and making music on a whole variety of instruments from
xylophones to djembes, keyboards to bass guitars, drum kits to iPads.
BTEC music courses (Performing and Music Technology) are offered in Years 10-13
and are taught using state-of-the art facilities in our superb Music Centre.
Extra-curricular musical activities thrive at Queen Ethelburga’s and there are vocal
and instrumental ensembles to cater for all ages, musical interests and levels of
experience. This work is regularly showcased both in as well as out of school.
In addition, we have 11 peripatetic instrumental / vocal teachers, all professional
musicians, who offer individual tuition at all levels.
39
“ Results in both of these subject areas are particularly strong, leading to a large
proportion of our students applying for degree courses at the UK's most
prestigious universities.
“
40
The Sciences
Considered by many as a Centre of Excellence for Maths and Science
Science and Mathematics at Queen Ethelburga's are areas of particular strength.
From the topic-led work in Chapter House, the rigorous yet fun building blocks
developed in King's Magna, to the serious examination and coursework studies of the
two senior schools, the curriculum seamlessly links throughout the schools to enable
students to achieve at a high level by the time they reach the end of their studies in
these subjects.
A range of subjects are offered in Key Stage 4: traditional GCSEs in Biology,
Chemistry, Physics, General Science, Additional Science, Mathematics and Further
Mathematics; along with BTEC Science for those students who prefer a more
vocational approach to their studies.
A clear route of progression is provided in the Sixth Form, with all of these subjects
available for study at A Level and/or BTEC, along with the opportunity to study
Psychology at A Level.
Results in both of these subject areas are particularly strong, leading to a large
proportion of our students applying for degree courses at the UK's most prestigious
universities in Mathematics, Engineering, Medicine, Veterinary Science, Biomedical
Sciences, and many others.

42
Information Technology
Ensuring every year group is ahead of technology advancements
Every pupil who leaves QE Collegiate will have the IT skills to enter a world which is demanding a higher and higher level of computer literacy.
Computers and interactive skills are introduced right from the start in Queen’s Kindergarten, and are continued throughout the year groups.
We have invested in the latest technology with regularly updated computers in our large IT department and also throughout our specialist
departments across the campus.
Our pupils are confident in the use of modern software, including the latest word processing, spread sheet and database, publishing and drawing
packages, presentation software and they develop the skills necessary to provide coursework in all subjects to the highest standard, as well as
developing abilities in computing.
Full high speed Wi-Fi is available throughout all of our 200 acre campus and we have over 1,000 computers throughout the schools solely for
students use.
43
44
The Royal Court Equestrian Centre
Encompassing recreational through to competition level riders
Our Equestrian Centre, from January 2014, will be undergoing a major make-over and
upgrade.
There will be a new covered arena with superb waxed professional surface plus new stables,
tack room, hay, straw and feed rooms. There will be a full refurbishment of the outside area,
plus new grass paddocks. On top of this will be a horse solarium for injury treatment, plus
horse-walker and other specialised facilities.
In addition we are creating new accommodation for visiting teams, plus new changing
facilities, offices, meeting rooms, classroom and social areas.
Whilst all of this is going on it has been decided, for the duration of the new build, that all
riding lessons will now take place off campus at a local riding school after school and at
weekends, with lessons given by their qualified staff.
Due to the disruption caused by the building work, which could spook horses during this
make-over and refurbishment, there will be no school or student horses on campus.
When the upgraded Equestrian Centre re-opens it will be part of a new high quality, superb
Activity Centre, offering a diverse range of equestrian, sports, social and extra-curricular
activities.
45
46
Combined Cadet Force
Exciting pursuits
The Collegiate has its own Combined Cadet Force (CCF) contingent. It offers pupils the chance
to develop powers of leadership, responsibility, self-reliance, resourcefulness, endurance and
perseverance through military-themed activities.
Students can volunteer to join the CCF at the start of Year 9, and recruit training focuses on
turnout (looking smart), drill (marching) and skill at arms (weapons training). Learning how to
iron trousers properly can be as difficult as re-assembling the Cadet GP Rifle after it has been
stripped, but both demand self-discipline and attention to detail from the Cadet.
Recruit training lasts until Christmas when the recruits decide whether to join the Army or the
RAF Section of the QE Contingent. Although the emphasis of the training is different in the two
sections, there is common training which both sections take part in:


Map Reading
Drill and First Aid



Marksmanship Training
Military Knowledge

Adventure Training
Community Service
Training is varied and exciting and places great emphasis on self-reliance and responsibility. For
Cadets who enjoy the CCF way of life and stay beyond Year 9, the emphasis switches increasingly
to leadership, as the Senior Cadets are encouraged to motivate and train the younger Cadets. With
this added responsibility comes promotion and the opportunity to attend external courses to
develop their leadership potential.
CCF Cadets not only learn valuable life skills such as First Aid and Map Reading, but can also gain
nationally recognised qualifications such as the Duke of Edinburgh Award. The CCF is about
more than just military skills, there are a wide variety of opportunities available to the Cadets.
47
48
Performing Arts
Fantastic resources for all age groups
The Drama department across all four schools offers a full and varied co-curricular
programme for all year groups, featuring regular drama productions and workshops.
Drama within the Collegiate allows students to explore situations, roles and
relationships derived from real and imaginary life. Classes provide students with the
opportunity to develop a wide range of skills such as movement, mime, improvisation,
play building, script-writing and public speaking.
The £5million Phoenix Centre is home to our Performing Arts department. The
ground floor is open plan with four separate drama and dance studios, together with
ancillary services. The use of moveable partitians can open this space up, giving great
flexibility and a cast performance area.
Opened by Jennie Bond - Royal Correspondent - in 2013, our state-of-the-art Theatre
gives students of all ages the opportunity to perform on stage in front of an audience.
It features full lighting and sound booth, curtains and orchestra pit. The Theatre and all
rehearsal spaces in the Phoenix Centre are air conditioned.
Previous drama productions for Year 6 to Year 13 include Oliver!, Annie, and West Side
Story. Chapter House use the Theatre for their Christmas and summer performances
and it is also used for House Drama and Music competitions, ensuring that children
from a young age build up confidence in performing in front of an audience.
49
50
Art, Fashion & Photography
Art and Design at Queen Ethelburga’s encourages creativity, independent thinking and
an inquisitive nature in our students, so that they can explore and understand the world
around them through visual and other art forms.
In Chapter House children study art and design as an integrated subject in combined
projects. From year 6 this develops into more in depth study in specialist classrooms
incorporating painting and drawing, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture and some
photography.
From year 10, students who choose to continue their study of art and design or
photography can take full advantage of our personalised approach and build rich and
varied portfolios for GCSE, A Level or BTEC Art and Design courses. Small class sizes
and one-to-one support outside normal lessons enable us to nurture young talent and
achieve excellent results. A suite of spacious, purpose-built studios for fashion, textiles
and photography support the creation of a rich diversity of work using a wide range of
materials and processes.
Annual overseas trips have included Barcelona, Madrid and Paris, while visits to galleries
and artist workshops help to prepare our students for rewarding careers in art, design,
photography, fashion and architecture.
51
52
Broad Topic Bases
The Humanities
Within the humanities, students are able to follow courses in both Geography and History. Both
of these more traditional subjects are delivered in a way that makes them relevant to everyday
life. Our schools are located close to some of the best geographical and historical fieldwork sites
in the country, allowing us to make these subjects ‘come to life’.
We also have a thriving Business department within its own suite of rooms where students can
follow A Levels in Business Studies or Economics, or study a more vocational BTEC in Business
Studies. Our Young Enterprise scheme is particularly popular, with our students regularly
achieving highly in National competitions.
Modern Foreign Languages
Students can follow courses in the traditional European Languages of French, Spanish and
German. High quality teaching is supplemented by one to one sessions from native-speaking
language assistants so that students make excellent progress in their pronunciation and fluency
of speech.
The department is well resourced with access to a language laboratory, and European visits
provide the opportunity for students to practise their skills! Results across our range of Modern
Foreign Languages are excellent.

Boarding in the Sixth Form
Independent living within a home from home environment
There is nothing else in the UK like our Sixth Form boarding accommodation. Court Apartments, home to
our sixth form boarding students, houses our showcase apartments. All the current bedrooms are being
refurbished for September 2014. An extra 100 identical apartments, so all our Sixth Form can be
accommodated in the Court building, should be complete for September 2015.
The en-suite shower and separate toilet are fitted out with travertine marble tiles and include heated towel
rail, hair dryer, power shower and a telephone in the toilet so you don’t miss those all important calls from
home. The well equipped kitchen area houses a microwave, mini dishwasher, sink, mini fridge and full size
domestic washer / dryer, along with toaster, kettle and additional cupboard storage.
The spacious study area allows dedicated study space for each student, along with their own set of glass shelves and magnetic / dry wipe board.
There is also a direct dial phone, along with a printer / scanner / copier provided. There is a 55inch LED Smart TV with DVD and PS3 (all on
timers) along with comfy leather sofa and footrest. Ample storage comes from dedicated wardrobe space, your own chest of drawers and underbed
storage. Ironing facilities, a trouser press and your own personal safe are also included.
The fully air-conditioned apartment is accessed by a key card hotel lock and includes your own front door bell. Common rooms are also provided

Sixth Form at QE
A Special Time ~ For 16 to 19 years of age
Our two Sixth Forms provide students with the opportunity to choose their own
individually tailored pathway to success, with the traditionally academic approach of the
College complementing the substantial range of A Levels and BTECs available in the
Faculty.
We aim to prepare all of our students fully for their chosen university course or career,
not only prioritising entry requirements, but developing independent learning skills and
self motivation, so that our students can continue to achieve success long after they have
completed Year 13.
Our mentoring programmes provide personalised advice and support with subject
choices, academic achievement, study skills and career guidance. This is supplemented
by our enrichment programmes which provide substantial opportunities for our students
to develop their broader knowledge of the world and a more in depth understanding of
their chosen university or career specialism, which proves invaluable at interview.
The overwhelming majority of our Sixth Form students go on to the UK's best
universities, the remainder achieve equal success with applications for international
universities or career opportunities in a diverse range of occupations.
61
62
Preparation for Tomorrow’s World
Interaction between pupils and teachers is encouraged at every level. The Head of
each school regularly meets with all pupils on a one-to-one basis, or in small groups,
which give ample opportunity for views, concerns and goals to be expressed.
In this way, the Heads and their teams have a clear understanding of each students’
aspirations and shorter term goals.
We adopt an enlightened and positive approach to career development, helping all
pupils, throughout their school career, to make plans for later life based upon their
abilities and interests. Careers guidance is well resourced; qualified careers advisors
give individual support; our computer database includes substantial careers
information, as do the schools’ libraries. Talks and presentations by outside speakers
provide objective information, which supplements the discussions held between
pupils and teachers at formal and informal levels. QE is a member of the Independent
Schools Careers Organisation.
The pupils’ longer-term objectives often become more clearly focused as they get
older and form a strong basis for success at GCSE and Sixth Form study, because
career targets, and the means of attaining them, have been thoroughly understood.
Through the authoritative advice of our careers specialists and school teams, along
with support from our entirely graduate teaching staff, students are well-placed to
make sensible and well-informed decisions about their futures that will enable them to
realise their full potential.
63
64
Our pledge to our Sixth Form Leavers
“ We wish you the very best for your future. As you progress, you find that the different
people and situations you encounter mean you need to make decisions. These affect
careers, health, financial circumstances and the path in life that you follow. Make your
own decisions. Do not be led by others to a decision that you know is wrong, however
easy or tempting it may appear. When choices or circumstances become confused or
you end up in trouble, make a mistake that is not easily correctable or do, or get
involved in, something foolish, we hope you turn to family and friends for help,
support or advice.
If for any reason this is not possible, we are willing, from now until you leave
university, to accept a reverse charge phone call from you, at any time of the night or
day, from anywhere in the world. We can also provide the services of our Solicitors for
advice on any legal matter, at no cost. It does not matter what the problem is. It does
not matter how horrendous things may seem. Our staff, business colleagues and
associates from all walks of life, will, without fail, help you.
You may be surprised at what we can achieve quickly and discreetly if the need arises.
The next few years of your life are important ones. Remember if all else fails we are
here. We will not be shocked, upset, disappointed or angry – and we WILL help. With
this letter you will find phone numbers that will reach us or our trusted close
colleagues, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, wherever we may be.
“
Good luck and may your God go with you.

History and Tradition
You have to know your past to know where you’re going
Our campus is steeped in history, from the old hall being a home to
Branwell and Anne Bronte for a short period, to the Monks who used to
feed from our stewpond on their way to Fountains Abbey. School history
is taught to the students in a light hearted way, with students battling for
first place in the annual “School Quiz”.
With our school celebrating its centenary birthday, we are proud to ensure
that tradition is at the heart of our school community. Some of the
students’ favourites are the annual “School Ghost” performance,
celebrating the school birthday and singing carols round our huge
Christmas tree before the school Christmas dinner.
Our traditions bring students together from all year groups and across the
four schools and the four school houses too. Whilst our campus may be
ever developing with new facilities, our traditions and ethos stay strong,
uniting our students for many years after they have left us.
69
70
Community and Charity
We have strong links with the local community. Students have spread Christmas cheer
by carol singing and our Head Girl and Head Boy of Chapter House are invited every
year to lay a wreath at the local Remembrance Service.
Charity is a core value within our schools and each year our Charity Committee pick
four House charities to support throughout the year. Students then run different
events and fundraising activities to support the charities. This happens across all four
schools and students relish the opportunities presented to support those less fortunate
than themselves through local, national and international charities.
We run trips to Gambia and India every year, giving our students opportunities to go
out to schools or orphanages in developing world countries that are in need of
construction works. Our students have helped build sanitation facilities, libraries and
contributed to the regeneration of school buildings.
Students also get the opportunity to raise money for their chosen charities at the
annual charity fayre.
Charities supported previously include:

Water Aid

Yorkshire Air Ambulance

Guide Dogs

Meningitis Charity

Affecting Real Change
And new charities are helped each year.

Beautiful Learning Environment
Gorgeous grounds
We take great pride in our campus, ensuring that it is beautifully maintained to a
high standard.
There are 5 dedicated play areas, in addition to the activity area on site. These
areas are purpose built for the age group that use them, from 3 years old, up to our
Sixth Form students! If you would prefer tranquil gardens, we have those too, in
the “Secret Garden” area, home to sculptures by famous Yorkshire artist Jeremy
Guy, or our recently renovated “Millennium Fountain” area, comprising more
formal garden settings with ample areas to sit and catch up with your friends.
Our charitable foundation has invested in “Olympic Court”, which is situated just
outside the entrance to Chapter House Junior school. This area with fountains
and bench seating features two original Olympic torches, along with tasteful
Olympic memorabilia as a legacy to the London 2012 games.
75
What new pupils have to say
I like this school because it is easy to make friends and at boarding it is like one big family.
Chido Kanyoka ~ Year 5
I like the balance in King's Magna of playing and learning. I like the freedom, the facilities and the friendships.
Kieran Pryce-Jones ~ Year 7
You cannot miss the fact that we have got excellent sports facilities at QE and alongside that some of the best coaching and
sports teaching.
Jake Somerville ~ Year 12
What parents have to say
What has impressed me about QE is the support provided for each individual child, which allows them to reach their full
potential whatever their abilities. Compared to our last school, things just happen without you needing to ask. By breaking
the Collegiate into smaller schools there seems to be a far closer relationship between the teachers and their individual
students.
Roger Stocker, parent of a King's Magna pupil and a College student
It is difficult to encapsulate in a few sentences all the things we like about QE, but there are three key areas. Firstly, pastoral
care, which for us was the most important consideration. Boarding at QE is like a 'home from home' and there is a strong
family feeling throughout the school. Secondly, QE has excellent teachers who help students to achieve their academic goals
in a positive learning environment. Thirdly, the Collegiate has fantastic facilities and a proactive strategy of reinvesting
profits back into the school for the benefit of students and staff alike. Whatever your child's academic abilities QE can help
them realise their full potential; they did for mine.
Yvonne Clark, parent of a College student

Geographically we embrace Harrogate, York and Leeds
York
The City of York is steeped in history, with many world renowned attractions to be proud of, including the gothic splendour of York Minster,
the National Railway Museum, Castle Museum and the Jorvik Centre, to name but a few. In addition to its many historical and educational sites,
York is also a vibrant, cosmopolitan shopping destination. Modern department stores run the length of Parliament Street while the smaller craft,
souvenir and antique shops can be found winding along the famous cobbles of “The Shambles”. The City also offers a huge variety
of bars and restaurants, catering for all styles of national and international cuisine.
Harrogate
Harrogate’s charm and character owes much to its heritage as a popular Victorian spa town. Modern Harrogate is a major international conference
destination with a varied mixture of shopping, fine restaurants and relaxing open spaces. The town centre is decorated with beautiful floral displays
annually and, with “The Stray” at its centre, a vast expanse of 200 acres of green lawns, Harrogate bursts into life every English summertime. Other
attractions in Harrogate include the RHS Gardens of Harlow Carr, the Royal Pump Room Museum, Mercer Art Gallery and the famous Turkish
Baths.
Leeds
Yorkshire's 21st century capital offers everything you would expect from one of the UK's leading cities, and more. Leeds is the only English city
outside London with its own repertory theatre, opera house and ballet companies. Leeds Art Gallery has one of the UK’s best collections of
contemporary British art (The Times) and the city is home to the Royal Armouries, the national collection of arms and armour. There are more
listed buildings in Leeds than in any English city outside London, with highlights including the Victoria Quarter, Leeds Corn Exchange and
Harewood House, home of the Queen’s cousin. A great sporting heritage is built around world-famous stadiums like Headingley and Elland Road,
and there is plenty to get involved in yourself too, from world-class golf to some of the country’s best mountain biking. Leeds is the ideal gateway to
the Yorkshire region – the Yorkshire Dales National Park is just 20 miles away, and features some of the country’s most beautiful landscapes.
Yorkshire is the largest county in the UK, with incredible scenery from inspiring moorlands to stunning coastlines.

Scholarships and Awards ~ General
Each year our Charitable Foundation grants Scholarships and Awards worth in excess of £3m. Over two thirds of this amount is reserved for parents and students
living in our Region. There are numerous different Awards which cover all age ranges and both Day and Boarding.
First Term Free ~ Day or Boarding ~ Worth up to £9,795
(a) First Term Free for Years N1 to 8 inclusive, or (b) 50% off First Term’s Fees for Years 9, 10, 12.
This one off Award covers the cost of the First Term with us for both Day and Boarding from Nursery aged children up to those entering Year 8. The value of the
Award thus ranges from £1,650 which is the day fee for Nursery aged children, up to £9,795 which is one terms boarding fee for a Year 8 child.
For those entering Year 9 to Year 13 age groups, the Award if for 50% of either the first terms Day or Boarding fee. So the amount of this Award will range from
£2,085 up to £5,388.
Family Sibling ~ Day & Boarding ~ For brothers & sisters - boarders from 12½% to 20%, or if all day pupils 10%.
This Award is for parents with more than one child at our Schools. It can apply to both day and boarding children of any age. The way it works is that the oldest
child with us does not get a remission discount but those younger do.
This Award is pretty much automatically given. At first you may think this Award is no big deal as other schools give sibling discounts. Our research has shown that
fewer and fewer schools are actually giving these discounts, and if they still are, they are often much smaller than ours. These Awards can, over the time your
children are with us, total many thousands of pounds!
Free Transport ~ Covers cost of the daily School Bus and/or local train service
Our daily bus service covers a huge area around us: - from as far as; Pateley Bridge, Ferrybridge, Doncaster, Thirsk, Escrick, Adel, Scackleton and of course covering
Harrogate, Leeds, Wetherby and Ripon. This Award covers all age groups and can be valid for the entire time your child is with us. Over time it can amount to
several thousands of pounds.
88
Big Sixth Form Academic Awards
Sixth Form Academic ~ Day up to £25,000, Boarding - up to £65,000
Contact us if your child is predicted to achieve minimum GCSE’s of:
(1) 9 A star - up to 100% Fees.
(2) 8 A star & 1 A - up to 85% Fees.
(3) 7 A star & 2 A - up to 70% Fees (4) 6 A star & 3 A - up to 50% Fees.
These are big Awards and apply to either day or boarding students entering our 6th Form - Year
12.
It is mainly based on a students predicted and eventual achievements at GCSE.
Each year we grant usually around 20 of these Awards. If you live within our bus route coverage
you
are more likely to be offered a Day Award.
