Magdeburg, the City of Otto
Two famous OTTOS have had a great impact on the 1200-year history
of the city of Magdeburg: Emperor Otto the Great loved Magdeburg
so much so that he ordered the construction of the city’s first huge
cathedral and transformed it into a metropolis of the Early Middle
Ages. The prominent inventor and former Mayor of the City of
Magdeburg, Otto von Guericke, on the other hand, fascinated the
world with his famous hemispheres experiments.
Despite these well-known figures, the City of Otto isn’t just about
major historical events but also represents an attitude to life, a
pragmatic approach and a sense of hospitality. Come and experience
Otto for yourself! We look forward to seeing you soon!

Stadtführungen
Nowadays, the face of the city of Magdeburg is not only characterised
by impressive historic medieval buildings, quaint Baroque facades and
monumental districts from the “Gründerzeit” period, but also by its modern
architecture, for example a masterpiece by Friedensreich Hundertwasser:
THE GREEN CITADEL OF MAGDEBURG.
5
6
Magdeburg’s range of sights, attractions and activities is just as diverse as its attractive
cityscape. The river ELBE, for example, runs right through the heart of the city and offers an
idyllic landscape that is the perfect setting for boat trips, bicycle tours, walks and strolls.
Magdeburg is also home to a number of extensive parks that offer plenty of space for anyone
looking to play sport or simply chill out and relax. In the warm summer months, these green
spaces are transformed into open-air venues for a variety of events ranging from jazz festivals
through to theatre performances.

CULTURE plays a huge role in life in the City of Otto. Magdeburg
Cultural History Museum, for example, has made a name
for itself by hosting a number of high-quality medieval
exhibitions. Visitors to the city are also impressed by the
excellent opera, musical and ballet performances held at
Magdeburg Opera House, while audiences at Magdeburg
Puppet Theatre are treated to entertaining puppetry shows on
an international level. Other cultural highlights in Magdeburg
include the collection of contemporary art displayed in the
Monastery of Our Lady, which forms part of the city’s active
art and cultural scene full of extraordinary projects in a wide
variety of different locations. On top of all this, Magdeburg also
has even more to offer, for example shopping fun, an excellent
nightlife, clubs and bars, spa experiences ... the list goes on
and on!

Historical Magdeburg Residents
Historical Magdeburg Residents
Emperor Otto the Great
* 23rd November 912 in Wallhausen
† 7th May 973 in Memleben
Emperor Otto the Great‘s heart truly belonged to Magdeburg. He gave the city a grand
cathedral, the predecessor to the current Magdeburg Cathedral, and transformed
Magdeburg into the first ‘German’ capital city and the centre of power of his Holy Roman
Empire. Otto the First was the most powerful ruler in central Europe in the 10th century.
Magdeburg, Otto‘s favourite residence, flourished under his reign and he presented the
city to his first wife Edith as a morning gift at their wedding. Otto acquired the epithet
“the Great” when he defeated the Magyars in the famous Battle of Lechfeld in 955. In
962, he travelled together with his wife Adelaide to Rome, where he became the first
King to be crowned Emperor. You can still visit his tomb in Magdeburg Cathedral today.
Otto von Guericke
* 20th November 1602 in Magdeburg † 11th May 1686 in Hamburg
After the Thirty Years’ War, Mayor Otto von Guericke played a significant role in the
development of the city of Magdeburg, so much so that he left his mark on history
as a diplomat and scientist known as the ‘great son of the city’. Alongside his political
activities, von Guericke also dedicated a lot of his time to his scientific research. One of
his most famous experiments after his invention of the vacuum pump in around 1650
was the Magdeburg hemispheres experiment. Otto von Guericke is still very present in
Magdeburg, for example as the namesake of the University of Magdeburg and the Otto
von Guericke Society, which cultivates his legacy in the Guericke Centre. Visitors can also
see the celebrated scientist ‘in person’ at the Otto von Guericke monument next to the
Town Hall.
Georg Philipp Telemann
* 14th March 1681 in Magdeburg
† 25th June 1767 in Hamburg
Telemann was one of the prolific composers during the era of Enlightenment in
Germany and had a significant influence on German Baroque music. He came from a
well-educated family from the city of Magdeburg, where he grew up and attended
the Cathedral School. Even as a young boy, Telemann learned to play a multitude of
instruments and when he was ten years old, he began to compose his first pieces.
He went on to achieve a degree of popularity both in Germany and abroad that no
composer had ever seen before and became known as one of the most diverse
personalities in musical history. Magdeburg is now home to the International Telemann
Society, one of the main tasks of which is to organise the Magdeburg Telemann Festival
and the International Telemann Competition, which alternate every year.
Martin Luther
* 10th November 1483 in Eisleben
† 18th February 1546 in Eisleben
Martin Luther was the reformer and founder of German Protestantism.
He started the reformation in 1517 by nailing his theses to the door of
Wittenberg Castle Church. During his lifetime, Luther visited Magdeburg
on a number of occasions and often stayed in the city as a young
student. In 1516, for example, he visited the Augustine monastery. Luther
gave several sermons in the monastery church (which became what is
now known as the Walloon Church in 1694) and in St John’s Church in
the year 1524. The city was ultimately considered to be a stronghold of
German Protestantism.
The ”Magdeburg Virgin”
The “Magdeburg Virgin” has formed part of the coat of arms of the city of Magdeburg
for many years, right up to the present day. The figure dates back to the middle of the
13th century, when Magdeburg established its first city council and the citizenship of
Magdeburg began to use its own seal. This seal featured a woman with half-raised arms
standing above the gate of a castle. The pieces of cloth dangling from her arms and the
fact that she is wearing her hair down indicate that the woman in the seal is a virgin. In
later illustrations, the virgin is also holding a wreath in her raised right hand as a further
sign of purity. Magdeburg’s seal is still used today as the city’s coat of arms, albeit with
a slightly different design. Every other year, Magdeburg also elects a new “Magdeburg
Virgin”, who is given the task of representing the City of Otto at official events and
exhibitions.

Otto the Great originally commissioned the construction of Magdeburg

the German Land of Saxony-Anhalt. Visitors to the Cathedral can still view the
tomb of Emperor Otto and admire a transept and a variety of exhibits dating back to
the Romanesque period. The building is also home to original works of art of
European importance created in Gothic style, for example the sculptures of ”The Wise
and the Foolish Virgins“ or “The Divine Couple”. On top of all this, another huge
discovery was recently made during excavation work in the Cathedral: the tomb of
Queen Edith, the first wife of Emperor Otto.

Magdeburg Waterway Junction with Historical Ship Lift
The centrepiece of the Waterway Junction is the longest canal bridge in the world.
The steel bridge, which has made a name for itself as a technical masterpiece
of the century, is 918 metres long and takes the Mittelland Canal across the river
Elbe. Together with the water-saving lock in Rothensee and the double ship lift in
Hohenwarte, the bridge forms part of a gigantic construction project that improved
the connection between the waterways of Hanover, Magdeburg and Berlin. You can
gain a clear insight into the development of water transport technology by visiting
the historic Rothensee ship lift, which has been in operation since 1938 and boasts
a special feature, namely a lock chamber that is installed on two floats and can
therefore be moved.

St. John‘s Church
St. Sebastian Cathedral Church
St. Sebastian Cathedral Church is a Catholic Episcopal church.
Its construction was ordered by Archbishop Gero in 1015, but
following a fire, the building was transformed into a Gothic
hall church in the 14th and 15th centuries.
St. John’s Church, the oldest parish church in Magdeburg, was first
mentioned in 941. It is closely linked to the work of Martin Luther,
who held a sermon in the overcrowded church building in 1524.
Our Tip: Climb to the top of the south tower to enjoy a

Especially in summertime it is very attractive to discover Magdeburg
with its old and new landmarks. A tour with a Segway is a modern
way of experiencing the city. The great Segway tricks gravity thanks
to its innovative control and is easily and precisely to handle by a
light movement of the body.
Furthermore, you can discover surroundings with other wheels like
rickshaws in which up to eight people and two children can have a
seat. Old childhood memories wake up if the little ones have already
driven away by a liliput while the adults have the possibility to decide
for a kart, a trike, a tandem or for the classic bicycle.

How to Get to Magdeburg 59
How to Get to Magdeburg
Magdeburg is located in the centre of Germany and as a major city it is
easily accessible using various forms of transport.
By car: You can easily and quickly
access Magdeburg by car (or coach) via the
A2 motorway Hanover-Berlin and the A14
motorway Magdeburg-Leipzig-Dresden or
by using different federal roads.
By rail: Magdeburg Central Station is
located directly in the city centre.
Magdeburg is an important railway
junction providing connections to Berlin,
Hanover, Leipzig and many other cities.
By bus: Comfortable long-distance
coaches travel from Magdeburg to various
destinations in Germany, for example the
cities of Leipzig, Hamburg or Munich, on
a daily basis. A large number of buses to
many destinations in the German Land of
Saxony-Anhalt also depart from
Magdeburg. The Central Bus Station
(“Zentraler Omnibusbahnhof (ZOB)”) is
situated next to Magdeburg Central
Station, only a few minutes’ walk from
the city centre.
By plane: Magdeburg is wellconnected to international airports such
as Berlin and Hanover (approx. 150 km),
Leipzig/Halle (approx. 100 km) and the
recently opened Magdeburg-Cochstedt
airport, which is located just 40km away
from the city.
A9
Magdeburg is the city of easy accessibility and short distances, meaning
that wherever you want to go, you can get there quickly and simply by
car or using public transport.
PARKING
You can locate multi-storey car parks and
parking areas in the city centre on the city
map at the end of the brochure.
